US venture capital firm forms pandemic defence fund

NEW YORK, Feb 16 (Reuters) - Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, the high-powered Silicon Valley venture capital firm, on Thursday said it has formed a new $200 million fund that will invest in companies making products to battle infectious diseases.
Kleiner Perkins, best known for its early-stage investments in technology companies Google <GOOG.O> and Amazon.com <AMZN.O> as well as biotech giant Genentech <DNA.N>, is calling it the KPCB Pandemic and Bio Defense Fund.
The fund’s goal is to accelerate innovations for worldwide pandemic preparedness and global health over the next three years, the firm said in a statement……..
The press release is much longer and goes on to list the objectives of the fund and the first investment which is in a company called BioCryst Pharmaceuticals who has an anti viral produce called Paramivir, etc.
