Forum: Forums in Non English Languages

The issue has been raised about other forums outside fluwikie.

I just wondered - are there forums in other languages? German, Turkish, Spanish, Chinese …

Let’s add them here and later we can add this to the resources pages in the wiki itself (I mean, not the forum).

fredness – at 17:47

The only foreign language resources I can think of are the Bird Flu and You handouts and posters (see tip of the week) in 9 languages and the NEJM report of H5N1 in Humans in 10 languages! Can we make language links from the front page for these languages? Deutsch, Polski, Español, Português, Brasileiro, Français, Turkce, Italiano, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, German, Vietnamese. Someone can post any native language links from resources we find like these, news, health organizations, etc.

Yes, but I wasn’t asking about “resources”, but rather “forums”. You know, lay people and experts speaking in their own languages.

How do we, from fluwikie, reach out to them wherever they are? Or are there apropriate places to foster the creation of such conversational places?

DemFromCTat 16:25

any forum thread can be started in another language, but we can’t moderate it.it’s a hesitation i have about doing the language thing here. And this month, we’ve needed some heavy moderating.

Just as eBay has blossomed overseas, are there reliable overseas contacts the editors know who could start a fluwikie clone in their country?

DemFromCTat 16:37

well, they don’t need our permission, but they’d need to get a pogge to do the tech stuff.

Grace RN – at 16:39

Not to mention all the editors to moderate! :)

Maybe we should work on cloning pogge…..

Melanie – at 16:40

Grace RN,

I’ve been trying to clone pogge for a couple of years.

pogge – at 16:42

The last thing the world needs is another one of me.

Grace RN – at 16:44

C’mon, just a few skin cells, won’t hurt a bit……

pogge – at 16:45

OUCH! That’s what they all say.

pancho – at 19:08

I can moderate a Spanish thread, no more than that. DemFromCT knows me. :)

lugon – at 19:31

Pancho - have you found any forum in your language? Could you provide link(s)? Fluwikie may not host such forums but rather redirect people towards them!

Thank you!

How about getting some of our own readers to serve as forum moderators on this flu wiki site in other languages?

Dem could give them the lowdown on what moderating takes, what to monitor, etc.

I think we should have parallel forums on the flu wiki in other major languages, starting with those in Europe. Global problem, needs global solution. We could be a truly global site! (Currently 82% of traffic comes from U.S., 6% from Canada… this could largely be a language issue).

Rather than mix other language threads in with this one, we should just create a separate forum discussion page for french, spanish, etc. threads.

Dem, would this work? As long as we could find the moderators, of course…? There seem to be enough here for it.

that’s all ? Must be, that the Americans are somehow more vulnerable to panflu than the Europeans. Hmm, can you ask in Italy for probability estimates or is it considered inappropriate ? Is it OK to discuss with strangers in the streets about the pandemic in Italy ? Or will they call the police to put you in strait-jacket into lunatic asylum ?

Urdar - NO – at 06:01

We’re just a chatty lot!

lugon – at 15:40

gs, we must put our personal stubborness (of which we have our fair share, as demonstrated on this site) to look for more. :)
