Forum: Question About Masks

I know this probbly sounds stupid so please forgive my ignorance here. Im new and trying to prep and my DH is thinking im off my nut for prepping. I know the N95 masks are recommended for possible times like this even though it really is modest protection. But I thought I read somewhere where the sick should wear masks as as well. Can someone knowledgable tell me if this is right. Do the sick wear masks too?

Thanks! PB

Yes, so if you buy N95 masks with an exhalation valve, you want some without that valve for the ill.

Hmmm… I just loaded up on a bunch of N95 3M masks (NIOSH Certified)without valve

Since I have so many on order is it ok for the non-sick to wear these too?

Yes. the exhale valve does a couple of things, it bypasses the filter to extend the life since you really want to filter the incoming stuff, it makes it easier for the wearer to breathe, and allows the humidity in the exhalation to escape. So if you are only worried about breathing in stuff that might be in the air, an exhalation valve makes it more pleasant for the wearer. But, if the wearer is sick, you want to stop all the the little buggies from getting away, so the exhalation valve would defeat the purpose. I have two sets, more expensive ones with valves if things get bad and I have to go out into enclosed spaces with other people, and bunch of cheaper ones without valves for less-dicey situations, or if I myself get sick and need to wear them.

Thank you! :)

Can you please tell us which model has the exhalation valve and which one doesn’t? Any info on pricing would be appreciated.

The Institute of Medicne has done a study on appropriate masks for adults and children in dealing with avian flu virus. Their report is due next month with their recommendations. Here are the research meetings they’ve had: http://www.iom.edu/CMS/3740/32033.aspx

Reports are usually found on this page, so watch there next month: http://www.iom.edu/CMS/3735.aspx
