are you short on money but got lots of junk laying around? Or maybe you forgot some crucial bit of equipment.. let’s say face masks for seven people.. can you make a flu mask from a snorkel set?

moeb - LOL! You might be onto something! I’ve thought about how I might use my SCUBA gear in the sickroom. Lugging those 80 cu. ft. air tanks around would be a killer. I could see a N95 mask cut into numerous pieces and the pieces fitted over the snorkel intake. …sounds like project time here.

Additionally, snorkeling/diving masks would likely be far superior to splash goggles.

Silicon and glass parts should be easy to decontaminate, too. Just toss them into a wash bucket with bleach.

Then there is the improvised CPAP machine made by using a portable 12V tire compressor pump and some garden hose, with a vacuum cleaner upholstery brush duct-taped to the face to use as the mask.

To humidify the air, perhaps an antique Hooka pipe?

pays closer attention.. (has a portable 12v compressor)

I believe that getting air from above normal exhalation height might be much more free of pathogens as globules of mucus tend to drift down not up. So I propose an air scoop held a couple of feet above ones head - say about 8 feet. No filtration needed. Kind of like a snorkle that the WWII subs used to use. No mask required! You would need to duck before going through a doorway and possibly buy a car that has a sun roof.

ereererrwwwwwww SPLAT! bird flies into the air scoop (no wonder insects are slated to take over the world)

meanwhile.. debates sticking the end of the 12v air pump in his mouth and turning it on to see what will happen

eye ball flies out and smacks the far wall

Sound’s like it might be more likely to survive the flu than some of these devices….

Id like to know how I can improvise IV solutions, and a delivery system - the drip chamber specifically

Buzz – at 15:50

Janet, Please don’t consider that. Aseptic products are just about impossible to make without specialized equipment and technicaal knowledge and skill. I think if you find yourself in a position where you think it is necessary to try something like that you would be better off trying to get the person to a hospital in spite of a pandemic. Hooking up an already sick person to such an improvised IV would in all likelyhood hasten their death through septicemia. I work for FDA and have done inspection of injectable drug manufacturers. Trust me don’t try it.

Buzz thanks for the warning, but I am a nurse and aware of septicema. In a pinch if the choice is watch someone die or try whatever well improvisation is all were likely to have within a week or two in a pandemic - supplies are going to run oiut within a week or two. A hospital is the last place Id want to be it will be a nightmare.

I was hoping that there would be some way to at least deliver hydration to someone. Gonna do some more research. Maybe Ill try the local vet.
