Forum: Power

I believe food and vaccine stockpilling are all things to consider. One thing that I have not heard mentioned with a flu pandemic is power. I am a public school teacher and surely hope that if a pandemic strikes that schools across the country are closed. If this is the case who else besides schools shuts down? What about power plants and gas stations? It is not going to do a lot of good to stockpile food if you can’t prepare it.

Try doing a search on Yahoo: Solar cooker, solor cooker build,

You will find plans to build your own solar cooker.

Also propane and a coleman stove work great. I have a tiny one burner and several tanks (1 lbs mini). Even if the solar cooker does not work well you can preheat cans of vegis or water so you use less propane for cooking. I made a solar dehydrator box which i intend to use for preheating.

At the top of the Discussion forum page is a search box, enter in power, or electricity, or generators and click the buttom. You’ll be amazed at the amont of times that has been brought up at this site.

I do have a thought on the subject of power, or the loss thereof. I think that we’ll all be “OK”, at least during the first wave. Why? The all mighty bottom line. If everyone is SIP (Sheltering in place, aka quarantined) the Electric companies are going to see windfall profits. I’m not home for around/about half of each day. Out of “boredom” I see see my electric bill going up by at 100–125%. I can see rolling brown/black-outs occurrnig, as the power companies will “protect the grid”, probably over zealously. i also see them “bribing” key personel to “man their posts”, in the interest of continuity etc.

Unfortunately, all bets are off for repairs, for example if a hurricane/tornado knocks down a lot of poles, etc. I see that taking quite some time to restore. The scenario of keeping/housing folks at the power plants is do-able. Getting the linemen out on the roads, who will not want to come in contacts with the public, will be quite the hurdle to overcome.

…just my 2¢
