Is anyone else being treated as the proverbial canary in the coal mine? The people who i am close to as well as my family all know that i keep a close watch on the flu situation. Now more than a few are saying they cant cope with thinking about it, and will just wait until i say “the eagle has landed” so to speak. I have encouraged all i know to prep and frankly its quite a responsability knowing these folks are so afraid the wont deal with it while there’s time….and are now depending on me to inform them!!! What do they think they’ll be able to do to prepare when its actually happening??? I’m very concerned..
Mine seem to think of me as a loveable nut with a harmless passtime (prepping!).So many preps are universal, that the argument can be made to “stock up” as opposed to “prep” as a hedge against inflation, the next power outage, feeling too tired to go shop one week,etc. Have them get in the habit of buying 5–10% more at a time. Remind them that teamsters can go on strike. Heck, buy ‘em bleach for their birthday!
Tell them it is like a volcano errupting, or, scientists saying Guess what, this is earthquake country and you’re overdue! - can’t decide to build earthquake-proof houses and bridges when the earth starts to shake!
They have to prepare now; when it occurs it is too late to lay in supplies and have finances in order to go into quarantine, or learn home nursing.
Canaries keel over dead, but mine gas isn’t contagious. Tell them they have the wrong metaphor; tell ‘em you have a telescope and see the iceberg coming and they better turn their deck chair into a person flotation device now, before they sleep another night on the Titanic. (And they can’t have your deck chair! That’s why you’re telling them; so they have time to prepare themselves.)

(Except the vaccines really might not be ready on public quantities for 3 to 5 years, but, it showed people prepping.)
Maybe they think you’re a little nutty about the matter but won’t say so, so as not to hurt your feelings. (I’m concerned about it too, or I would not be here) Apparently lots of folks can’t think about much other than what color polish they’ll have the manicurist use next time they have their nails done.
Last summer I heard the same things - cant deal with this you keep me updated ect… And the family did treat me as a little eccentric. Thats all changed. Drip by drip I kept them informed, Now they are prepping and watching the news. They dont understand those who are not paying attention now - forgetting from whence they came.
Over time peoples perceptions do change. Giving information in a all in one pakage doesnt seem to work. But a little here a little there makes a difference over time IMO anyway.
