Woodstock – at 05:39

ahhh..thats better :)

Woodstock – at 16:39

Nikolai: you have about 3 months worth yes? Just curious as you mentioned you also live in a teeny apartment. Space is such an issue for me

Woodstock – at 17:58

i have the movie. If anyone wants me to post a cd copy please let me know.

Nikolai---Sydney – at 20:41

Woodstock:

Yes, my flat is small and I have ‘a lot’ of furniture—but I also live alone and have no expectation of others here during a pandemic, so ‘small’ relative to one is ‘bigger’ than say ‘large’ relative to, perhaps, three… Make sense?

Let me emphasise, however, I do NOT have sixteen weeks water! Maybe, after final filling of kitchen pans on the day, I may have four weeks drinking water… Hope able to resupply.

Dry foods, tins, etc in white plastic boxes from greengrocers are the sort broccoli comes in: wash out, they have lids. I stack those and cover with a large decorative cloth—for my own comfort, rather than concealment.

Under bed bags of rice, etc, toilet paper, the usual nook and cranny kind of thing. But yet, it is very crowded even yet!

Cheers!

Prepper Australis – at 03:39

Hi Woodstock,

I would love to get hold of a copy of the movie. Please let me know how much it’ll cost and I’ll send you the money. If that suits you, then I’ll send you my postal address from my email account.

Your idea regarding a list for a pocket pc on the other thread is great. I have a list which I’ll update shortly and send it to you, if that helps. Regards, P.A.

Nikolai---Sydney – at 03:52

Woodstock:

You say the movie is on a ‘CD’ but I am unsure if you mean a DVD? Or is the CD just a printed transcript? I never have, but I know my computer will play DVD’s on the monitor…

I am not very tech oriented….

Could you also send me a ‘test’ email on the address on my Profile? I think I have to use it within the first ten days or it will cancel, and as only for Panflu use, not yet!

Much obliged, as for so much!

Woodstock – at 07:48

yes of course nikolai. I can make a cd in an .avi format that should play on your machine with no trouble. Making a dvd is a bit more difficult for me at this end

Woodstock – at 07:54

PA: will email you so u will have my address. I consider this a public service so i’m happy to spring the coupla meesly dollars to post it to ya! ;)

Aziraphale – at 07:58

Just managed to get the film today (thanks Woodstock for the info!) so I’ll try and stay awake to watch it tonight - definitely over the weekend sometime.

I’m interested in the PocketPC list also, though I’m a Palm Pilot user… However the other thread did bring to my attention that I should keep my main list and info on my laptop computer rather than one of the desktops in case there’s a power outage.

Nikolai---Sydney – at 08:02

W’S:

No, I don’t want a DVD, thanks. I can play CD’s just fine on my Windows XP.

I’d love to have a CD of the movie, however. May I email you my postal address? If you want to give me a postal address I’d be really pleased to drop a tenner in the mail toward running expenses for everybody!

You are great, and I just may stock some scotch and smokes for down the line, in case you run short!

Woodstock – at 08:05

Nikolai: have just mailed u on your hotmail address. If you can send me postal address i will mail a copy off to you. No worries re mail costs..its my pleasure

Azi: ijust posted a site for a list thingy on the other thread. Pretty sure it is available for Palm also

Aziraphale – at 08:14

Thanks Woodstock, just saw it and it is available for Palm. I’ll give it a go (though that will have to be next week as my dock is at work!)

Woodstock – at 08:16

its only teeny. i can downlaod it and email it to you if u like?

Aziraphale – at 08:31

Thanks Woodstock, I can download it, but I can’t upload it to my Palm without the dock so next week it will have to be!

Woodstock – at 18:00

oh of course. Duh!

Woodstock – at 21:42

Todays Specials: Coles has canned kidney beans, chickpeas etc for 58 cents

Woodstock – at 22:28

Todays trial run: Made up some McKenzies dried soup mix just as per the instructions. Very bland but the ingredients make it very nutritious. May be ok for someone recovering. I added a can of chopped tomatoes and some bacon bits (the dried vegan ones…not real bacon at all) to liven it up. Is quite nice like that. Also it needs more water than the instructions say. Maybe make with stock instead. Very cheap to make, stores long term and healthy. Might be worth stocking for handing out to others if need be as well as stocking for ourselves.

13 May 2006

Aziraphale – at 02:40

Woodstock - I use that soup mix all the time. I have an old crock pot which is brilliant for making soups. I use about a cup of the soup mix, 5 cups of chicken or vegetable stock and then whatever vegies I have around (at least an onion, a carrot and a stick of celery), and most of the time also some lamb offcuts. Slow cook for about 8 hours - really delicious.

Nikolai---Sydney – at 03:58

Not specific to our thread, but for geographical proximity, but considerable concern on main forum about clusters in our closest big northern neighbour…on island of Sumatra.

Being closely watched by our best and brightest, so no need to follow blow-by-blow. I hope.

Woodstock – at 04:00

is anyone else heading out tonight for those “last minute list” items? I have the heebie jeebies about this…but i’m also a medicated OCD sufferer so i dont trust my own judgement. Opinions?

Aziraphale – at 06:01

I just finished watching the ABC special and now I’m looking at my 12 weeks preps and I’ll be adding to them this week.

(not tonight Woodstock, but then we don’t have late night supermarkets here in the west anyway).

Feeling better about getting my neighbour packs together though.

Aziraphale – at 06:02

Nikolai - I’ve been watching that thread too. It disturbs me how many Australian’s holiday in Indonesia too, there would have to be an easy pathway to here if it does turn out to be the bad news.

Woodstock – at 06:09

yeah thats whats bugging me too

Nikolai---Sydney – at 09:22

One plus—not as many of our crowd holiday in Indonesia as we saw a few years ago. Would hate one, or a businessman, to bring that thing back home, but!

Occupational hazard of preppers, however, is this appearance of threatening clusters (is there any other kind?) that then have no follow-up. We can be mucked around by this for a long time yet… Must set targets and then relax some and, with a measure of security, then set a slightly higher goal?

Woodstock – at 17:14

OK, here i am at 7 am and the trigger i had set for myself didnt happen! YAY!! I went to bed thinking that if there was another cluster reported in the morning i’d hit the shops for my last minute things. A bit of time bought i think/hope. And lets all say a big thankyou to the makers of prozac! ;)

Woodstock – at 19:00

Wake up Australians! am i the only early riser here?? Its lonelyyyyyy and i have no aussie wikians to have coffee with…;)

Prepper Australis – at 19:41

Hi Woodstock,

I too went to bed last night wondering whether this one was going to develop. I suppose we may not hear much for a few days. Must admit my anxiety level has gone up a couple of notches in the last 24 hours, I was starting to become a bit complacent…

Woodstock – at 19:44

Prepper: I got up all happy (see above) and now i see from the other posts that we may be having to wait longer. I’m waiting for it to be 10am and Coles to be open! (and the chemist etc)

Aziraphale – at 21:35

The time difference across the coasts means that often I think I miss the rest of you. And I’m afraid I slept in today - I have a head cold and was very tired anyway as I spent Friday night at a bushfire.

Sounds like I need to catch up on the other threads and then I’ll head back to this one. I still won’t be able to hit the shops till Monday though.

Aziraphale – at 23:13

So, wait and watch for what happens across this week… I have a couple of days off work so I think I’ll be doing some more stocking on Monday.

Woodstock, did you get to the shops?

And anyone - this is one of the things that for me really emphasises American vs Australia - how many pounds in a kilo?

I see all the Americans purchasing 100 pounds of rice and I have no idea how that compares to bulk amounts here.

Woodstock – at 23:18

Azi: 2.2 Lb to a kilo. Yes i got to the shops…my purse is looking very sick now :(

Aziraphale – at 23:31

Thanks Woodstock - well, I now know I don’t have 100lb of rice (yet)!

Actually, I think I’ll also need to go to the hardware store tomorrow to get another bin to store things in. I find I’m resenting money spent on items for storage (as distinct from the money that’s spent on what goes into them).

Woodstock – at 23:34

Howards storage world has their own brand of tubs that arent toooo expensive. I also get ratty about spending on stuff like that! i cant believe how much this prepping costs. I worry so for people that dont have anything to spare…

Aziraphale – at 23:42

Don’t think we have a Howards over here. I’ve been getting 60 litre rubbish bins (black) from Bunnings for about $10. I just leave rice/sugar/dog biscuits/whatever in their packaging and stack them in the bins. My main issue is to keep rodents from the food… Tins and bottles go onto shelves. I’m lucky that I have a spare room I can store all of this in. I have a dream that one day it will look like a mini-supermarket in there :-)

14 May 2006

Not Paranoid But – at 04:22

Hey Azi can i come shopping? just kiddin!

Aziraphale – at 04:46

Ah NPB, if only there was 100lb’s of rice (etc) there that I thought it would be a worthwhile trip for you :-)

I don’t think I’ve even seen rice bags more than 10 kilos

Woodstock – at 05:40

OK folks, here’s what i got for my trial run “final shop.”

Woodstock – at 05:41

oh and more scotch and cigarettes but that goes without saying :)

Aziraphale – at 06:08

It’s interesting what’s on other people’s last minute lists. I have an independent water supply for instance, so don’t need to buy water (thank goodness!)

For anyone interested, this is my last-minute-they’ve-confirmed-H2H list. It includes fruit/veg that should store OK for a while, gas for cooking, the ubiquitous scotch and ciggies, yet more rice and pasta and I hope won’t put too big a hole in my wallet!

Woodstock – at 06:24

oh cr*p i forgot the gas bottle refill!

Aziraphale – at 06:34

That’s ok - I had forgotten batteries too :-) Which is why I thought it might be good to share our lists.

Woodstock – at 06:49

u have electrlyte powder? My dr really pushed that one..

Woodstock – at 06:51

i also got Spirulina capsules and Active Manuka honey

Not Paranoid But – at 07:10

Any Australians upping their preps due to Indonesian cluster situation? I can feel a grocery trip coming on……….

AussieOneat 07:19

Dont forget the extra can opener……imagine all of those cans and your opener breaks!

Aziraphale – at 07:43

I’ve got electrolyte powder Woodstock, always a good thing to have around anyway. And two spare can openers AussieOne :-)

I just spotted on news.com.au they are reporting that the 18 month old from the Indonesian family has died - I’m not sure if that’s “new” for today or not.

http://www.news.com.au/story/0,10117,19134323-23109,00.html

I’ll be hitting the shops tomorrow NPB!

Woodstock – at 07:54

NPB: yes this is because of Indonesia. Ithink i will be making top up stops daily to replenish anything i use

Nikolai---Sydney – at 08:05

Since I found your lists of last-minute items both valuable and interesting, let me share (top of my head) my own as well as I can recall:

FRIDGE: eggs, chocolate, margarine, continental sausages, blocks of cheddar cheese, cottage cheese, fresh milk…

FREEZER: beef mince, microwave meals, fish fingers, vegies…

PRODUCE: potatoes, onions, garlic, carrots, cabbages and some apples, oranges, bananas…

Margin on my pretty full plastic card to pay for all this. I think some $300 would come to. This keeps so-so and I’ll eat out of this while electricity lasts, saving canned goods and propane fuel for down the line.

No alcohol. No tobacco. Though I adore both!

<going to be a long, hard pandemic, Nikolai!>

Aziraphale – at 08:15

Thanks for sharing your list Nikolai - you reminded me to get garlic! Whilst I have some of the jar variety in my storage, it’s just not quite the same as fresh.

Also I’m storing some cheese, margarine and chocolate in the freezer already. The cheese may change in texture but will still be edible.

Nikolai---Sydney – at 08:31

W’stock & Azi, et al:

I cannot overstress the value I find in those white foam boxes that broccoli comes in. The greengrocer gives them to me, one or two at a time, no charge. They easily wash clean, orourless, and seal tightly.

I have two reserved for last-minute water storage, another 100 litres, I’d guess. One goes on floor of shower, under the tap, fills there. Lid on. Second sits on top of it and similarly filled. Yes, just room for me to fit in and take a shower, as long as water lasts. Tight lids shed soapy water, no sweat.

As empty food boxes, they are good for trash and even solid human waste if no sewage operational along the way.

Look at them, at least. At the price (free) they are simply priceless, I feel.

I have spare ones stored in the general access attic, saying they are for use in a potential move some day. I will give two to each of the other seven apartments at such time as may seem appropriate, for water storage for my neighbours…

Aziraphale – at 09:01

I don’t know the white foam boxes Nikolai, they sound like they are the size of a large esky? I’ll ask at the supermarket, they would be useful for a number of things besides water by the sound of them.

Woodstock – at 18:14

Good morning australians and kiwis. How is everyone holding up with this news so close to our shores?

Aziraphale – at 19:28

Well, I’m hunting around for more news (I think it’s going to be a big week) and planning a shopping trip today :-)

Nikolai---Sydney – at 20:24

Hard to know when to ‘cower and cover’ isn’t it! On the one hand, I respect the saying “Better a year early than a day late”. And conversely I must not overspend and overstock too soon (if this doesn’t come ‘today’) because of my money and space constraints.

I have committed myself, on another thread, to the estimate of a 25% probability of PF51 before November 1st, then if it hasn’t happened, to a 33% probability in the following six months.

Sounds good, on paper. But a one in four chance before Nov in NO way precludes it hitting TOMORROW. It only serves to help me feel less anxiety and endure a possible long period. We don’t want to enter this trial already emotionally tired!

My last-minute list is just that. I have not hit the shops on the Indonesia clusters.

And, at the same time, I could live to bitterly regret not. Maybe as soon as tomorrow. What a dilemma for all of us!

probability

Aziraphale – at 20:56

I’m not quite up to my last minute list either Nikolai, but there are a few things that I don’t feel I yet have enough of but that will get eaten in the course of things should the worst not happen.

So today I’m going out for things like more rice and because I’ve still got this head cold, more honey is on my list too.

AussieOneat 21:41

I am not particularly concerned about the latest cluster, with emphasis on latest, Indonesia has historically had family clusters and the culture lends itself to these type of events. Extended families eat together, share food sources and chickens are all over country.

If has gone H2H I would expect to see a different pattern to what is happening at the moment. The number of cases and the death dates do not appear to show efficient H2H and the fact that no others, as yet, have shown themselves reinforces this.

BF made its first appearance in Indonesia last July and I expect things will heat up even more over the next few months.

Piesy001 – at 21:58

I am lucky i have a yard. Bunnings have water tanks (about 1000 ltrs) from about $450 up. This is on my last minute list. I won’t connect it to the house, but I will have it at the back door and fill it at that stage from the hose.

For last minute, I also have an ABN, and access to a Campbells (wholesale grocery store) about 25 mins up the road. I will be filling my trailer with extra stores, probably 2 or 3 times, they are cheap and everything comes in wholesale sized boxes and containers. I suggest if you have a campbells near you, go for a look, they have almost everything. I got my ABN so I could shop there, and they dont care what type of business you have.

Indo is making me nervous. I am lurking here more than ever now.

(I have no affiliations with either stores mentioned here)

Nikolai---Sydney – at 22:14

I see we have gone to a new link? Agree this one is getting quite long. Good luck to all!
