Thread continued from here.

For continuity, let me re-post from kristikaylene who started the original thread ‘Personal Trigger Point’ on pandemic:

“I know this has been discussed previously, but I think this subject is ever evolving and worthy of revisiting.

“What is your personal trigger point for SIP/quarantine with your family? Is it based on WHO or gov’t recommendations, number of cases, location of cases or something else?

“Is your personal plan in graduated steps, or does it move from normal to SIP in one grand leap?

“Personally, I am having a difficult time determining what should be the trigger point for my family…maybe it is one of those “you’ll know when it is time” things?

“The only thing I am sure of is that it won’t be WHO based. It looks like they won’t move to 4 until we are experiencing full blown panflu!”

Perspective changes on this issue as events develop, but it may be a good thing to give some thought to it before CNN tells the entire world!

Nikolai---Sydney – at 04:42

For new visitors, SIP = ‘shelter in place’, meaning to self-isolate from society to avoid infection and live on supplies pre-positioned in the home or other prepared refuge.

Woodstock – at 04:51

as soon as i see Niman make a diffinative (sp?) announcement then i’m going into seclusion

Nikolai---Sydney – at 05:00

I don’t know that I have a clear vision, myself. I think a barrage of events and announcements, from Niman, Moderators here, CDC and WHO statements (??), CNN and BBC etc?

I find the question hard to face tonight, even in imagination.

What do others feel? What about last minute top-ups?

Tipping Points for SIP? *Assuming* a significant CFR …

o We would not do a full SIP, more like a cautious Minimization of contact and risks.

o Highest Priority: Child in Primary School - I would withdraw my child from school when I became

aware of the Pandemic Flu occurances in my general metro location. I percieve my decisional point
may be anywhere from a week to months (I expect gov. reaction to be slow …) prior to Offical School
Closure notifications. Been There, Done That, with infectous disease transmission from my child’s schoolmates ..

o Work environment: I am able to work at home, I would start working from home approximately the same time.

> This point would be where my family would use N95 Masks, Disposable Gloves, Hand Sanitizer, Hand Washing

  when interacting with public.

> Shift to once weekly bulk purchases of food, minimize external contact. > Discontinue Restraunt Dining, Movies, etc. > Keep Freezer, 2nd Freezer in Garage full up with meat/fish/fowl, frozen veggies, etc.

I don’t view potential future pandemic causing a binary ON / OFF situation with regards to Food, Water, Power, Gas, Gasoline, etc… on a particular date or date range. Life will go on … changes may be much smaller and/or much different from what we plan for.

RICHARD FL – at 20:14

I will watch the news as more cases are brought to the attention of the media they will report it. If more news is dedicated to bird flu then Iraq here in the states then watch out, don’t let the door hit you in the face as I and my family retire, entrench and continue preparations.

They use to say watch the sky now it’s watch the news and internet!

RICHARD FL – at 20:16

For Annonx2 – if you have both freezers full what are you going to do when the lights go out???? I hope you have some other preparations made.

anon – at 20:19

Preface this by saying that I see little downside apart from minor expense and embarrassment to “pulling the trigger too soon”. When I see a significant outbreak in Indonesia or elsewhere (>100) cases, my assumption is that a pandemic is imminent. At that point, we pull the trigger on the top-off list, then notify friends and family that TSHTF. I call in for some unscheduled leave, and we wait and see. If TPTB are able to effectively arrest the pandemic, we may wait and see in the suburbs. If there are any indications that the virus has jumped the firebreaks, and that the CFR >25% (cyanosis and other prompt lethal expression) we head for the backwoods.

When there is pandemic flu anywhere in the world, I will top off the groceries. People travel so much, I’m not waiting until it’s announced as found in my metro area. Especially since it’s contagious before symptoms show. I guess gloves and mask in the store, too. Getting my dh to stay home is another question, if we don’t have clear news on details of contagion, incubation time, numbers of sick and dead, ? I’m not sure what it will take to convince him. I can see myself insisting he SIP after a few days or so, or a week at most-it depends on how much reporting versus weaseling we see in the news and on Fluwikie.

I am a medical transcriptionist and just did a report on an 18-year-old girl who showed up at a major metro Atlanta hospital with pneumonia just after getting off a plane from Spain. She lives here and went there on vacation and when her family picked her up from the airport, they looked at her and took her straight to the emergency room where she was diagnosed with pneumonia. I thought the airlines were supposed to be paying attention to things like this?

P.S. Atlanta is the busiest airport in the world or at least it was. In other words, if she would have had BF, she could have just contaminated a lot of people!!!!!

All it took was one person flying into Toronto with SARS and look what happened. They handled it very well and learned a lot of lessons. They had a terrible time tracking down people who were in contact with patients. Still things carried on in Toronto but restaurants, movie theaters and malls were exceptionally quiet. They thought they had cleared it up and bang it came around a second time. Sounds like a similar pattern.

Therefore if a pandemic breaks out overseas first thing I’ll check is whether borders have been closed. If not, it’s time.

Cherokee Rose – at 00:31

I just don’t know.

I’m hoping that we will get some sort of heads-up by keeping up-to-date with my online resources.

What bothers me is that I work with small children (under 3) and their families in their homes with VERY DIVERSE ethnic backgrounds. Many of my families go “home” periodically (or who have family from out-of country visiting them for serveral months at a time). In the last 2 months I’ve met with familes from Vietnam, Australia, Nigeria, Mexico, Columbia, Bosnia, India … the list goes on.

Who knows what I may be exposed to before *knowing*…

Here is a very good WHTA IF situation: You live in Florida and have a hurricane hit you no power, tv, radio, Cells, Phones, how do you get the word that BF has started to spread world wide. This while you are picking up the trash in what was your home. No police, Nations Guard, Fire, no one around just you and your neighbors, roads blocked, etc.

WHAT WILL YOU DO ?????

This has happened to me 3 times in the last 6 years! Did not worry about BF then! different story now!

flourbug – at 10:37

RICHARD FL – at 10:00 - WHAT WILL YOU DO ?????

Turn on the car radio.

Plug the adaptor into the cigarette lighter, plug in the laptop, check out Fluwiki.

Put some batteries in the police scanner and shortwave and listen to the chatter.

If the cellphones are working, call out of state relatives and have them keep an ear to the ground.

Lily – at 10:43

I’m glad to have been on the wiki since sept or oct. I no longer have a trigger point. Won’t know a thing as I avoid the computor when I am away. Down to the shore on a perfect June day. Enjoying life pre-pandemic, as if there was no Avian Flu. One more of the oblivious for a few days.Personaly I think the “no news from Indonesia is of concern”. But look how we have progressed, no one worries about the Masses of people in Germany for the World Cup in Soccer.

I’m in FL as well and have been considering this problem all along. We have a “wind up” radio that we are already using intermittently just so I can figure out the best reception location both inside and outside the house. We have some low powerlines and large trees around the house … and the house is solid concrete block … that cause some reception issues.

I’m assuming that we will know what is happening up to the minute the hurricane or other storm take our power. If things are that bad before the power goes off, I’ll simply assume SIP.

My concern is already being in pandemic mode/SIP and THEN a hurricane occuring. If there are that many sick people, what kind of hurricane monitoring will we have?

My response is to prep for “panrisk” — I really like Melanie’s word — situations and then once we SIP, that’s it … hurricane or no … we will have prepared as best as we are able.

But we don’t live in an evacuation zone. Someone living in an evacuation zone has got some serious decisions to be made with regard to SIP and hurricanes/storms/flooding.

“Plug the adaptor into the cigarette lighter, plug in the laptop, check out Fluwiki.”

You’re ISP connection would have to be up and running.

Irene – at 12:22

^^^ “You’re” should read “Your”

Ok yesterday the power went out due to the storm coming through rain and wind. But we did have radio including the car but the people in New Orleans and Mississippi did not have any way other then word of mouth to pass info for WEEKS. They say we will have 6 major storms this year what about next???

I will look into CB’s it could work as a way to keep in touch!! I may start working on a network here in Florida.
