And if authorities are still planning on waiting to take action “based on the WHO pandemic levels” I have to agree with Dr.Osterholm’s unpopular two-word soundbite summation.

WHO pandemic alert Levels are now basically 1,2,3,hush-hush, 6, right?

Did Dr. Osterholm actually say that?

Any link please?

Am I correct that the Osterholm two word sound bite was “We’re scre**d” as he walked away from a microphone?

Avian flu: ‘We’re screwed’ if it hits soon

By Betsy Querna

Posted 6/16/05

“The virus “is due to spin out of this bird population” that it currently infects, said Michael Osterholm, the director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research at the University of Minnesota. When it does, the fast pace of global transportation and trade is sure to carry it around the world in a matter of days if not hours, the officials said. And while most states have plans in place to deal with public-health emergencies, many of those plans have yet to be tested in real or simulated situations. If the pandemic were to hit today, said Osterholm, “I don’t know what we could do about it except say, ‘We’re screwed.’”

Thanks

Its in our “western” hemisphere: http://tinyurl.com/o6hhy article about BF in Canada. I agree “we’re screwed”

“Its in our… “

You said “our”. Do you work for Recombinomics/Dr. Niman?

Sorry, I don’t get it. There is no discussion of WHO or Dr. Osterholm in the commentary.

tinfoil hat – at 13:48

Sorry to be off topic, I was reacting to Melanie – at 13:04 “we’re screwed” because BF is on North American continent, specifically Canada. No, no association with RE/Niman.

Please look at the new cooperatively designed table as a very small example of cooperation by WHO (providing the table in the first place, with everything that means, including country and laboratories and people on the ground working on it), and fluwikie (people who started it in the first place, lugon providing a dry “sort by date” concept plus a couple other suggestions, Heather providing beauty and mark-up and more ideas developed in the News section she designed and mantains).

So, in what other ways can we cooperate? :-)

lugon – at 04:40

Just as a suggestion: what areas in need of fresh thinking has the WHO signaled? There was a “strategies” document somewhere, where I recall reading there were a number of such areas. They may be difficult issues, needing the wisdom of crowds somehow. Does “creativity out-sourcing” make sense in this case?

WHO people, please just give us the aim and maybe some background data. Refer to some published documents. Tell your contacts across the world to post the things you are afraid of posting directly. Who knows if we might be able to provide something marginally useful?
