Here’s our wikipage for a “respiratory prevention package”. There’s some ideas about “why” and “how” to create and deliver such a package, on the wikipage itself.
Please take a look, edit there, comment here, link to-and-fro, challenge the whole idea, bring missing ingredients to the table, and generally have serious fun building the best package we can. This build-up process will happen along time, so keep bringing more pieces if you can.
We at fluwikie can put forward “less-than-fully developed” ideas that can’t be put in writing by official bodies; that’s where a wiki is stronger than naturally more conservative organisations. Just let’s be careful to acknowledge what is backed up by scientific experience and what’s just speculation at this point, or simply not right (snake oil).
This package might be tried out in areas where there’s bird flu in birds, or in areas where there’s seasonal flu (maybe two mostly closed communities where one uses the package and the other doesn’t). If that’s the case, please bring your experience back here so we may develop this package further.
Thank you!
Also, there may be some “science” behind some elements of the package. Just as an example, there might be information on how effective some “teaching strategies” are for certain age-groups etc.
Ok, I give up trying to be exhaustive: there’s a lot missing. Your turn now! :)
Would this also include community produced respirators as opposed to masks ?
I don’t see why not. Oh, wait, I see why: respirators are for treatment or for prevention?
There could be a wikipage linking to all “community treatment” pages. Yes. Please do. Model it after “prevention” if you like. Add all needed disclaimers etc. “Training just in case, not actually recommending”, etc.
Respirators for prevention, worn to protect carers. I would like to start a theme along the lines of the 1941 Hawaiian community childrens mask project, which produced over 37,000 mask and respirators for children and infants …. along the lines of your DIY masks project.
I think it would be far easier to produce a safe and effective re-usable respirator, than a half face mask.
Hey, it’s not “my” project at all! :)
Maybe run it within the simple masks if filters are the same? Or independently if there are enough differences? Whatever works.
And yes, let’s link to the respirators from the prevention package. Great!
Not to thread drift but should we put projects like this directly into the main index or do you think we should make a page of ongoing projects (similar to the FluWiki to do list but I think that is more site maintenance related)? A collective projects page could then be listed in the index.
Could we please call it ‘respiratory protection’ instead of ‘respiratory prevention’?
Prevention sounds so…negative.
Can I humbly suggest a separate thread as respirators are quite different than masks. I am particularly thinking about ‘Pressure Air Purifying Respirators’ for the project. I would have started a new theme … but don’t know how !.
Virkon, just go to the edit box where there’s the "http://www.fluwi ... Package" part, delete what’s after “Forum.” and Add the name of your thread - without spaces. Press enter and you’ll have room to start a new thread. Read things twice before you press “accept” and you’re done.
wetDirt - I don’t know how to change the name of the thread. Mods may have such powers. It’s best to do it now rather than later, so we may fix any broken links that may appear.
fredness - please do. What index are you referring to? We can link to the same page from several places. That’s the horrifying beauty of wikis :-/
I am not sure what I did that was right but I eventually got a page up called Community Respirator Project. As you know I am a newbie here and not really sure of what I am doing. To keep the text posted on here as short as possible I have used links to relevant articles. If I have posted it in the wrong place, II apologise in advance and ask if someone could move it for me please. Thank you.
Virkon - I idiotically declare you’re not a newbie anymore! I’ll go read that thread. Great!
