Anyone there with LA Escapee?

Gary Near Death Valley – at 16:06

Well guess I was one of the lucky ones. I retired from a fire department in Oregon, and moved to the desert near Death Valley. It is different here to say the least but now have a better garden than I had in Oregon. Also have windmills, solar panels, etc, on 2 acres with a 6 foot chain link fence surrounding the whole place. I did get alot of prep in place after I moved in 1998, and have done much out here that most have not done or thought of. It does take time and some money. Have about a 1000 spare gallons of water, etc and could stay on the property for at least 2 years without stepping off of. If anyone would like pictures of any of it, just email me thefiredude2000@yahoo.com and will be happy to share pictures and suggestions.

How often do you go to get supplies, and how far is it? If you have any pantry recipes, please share them, I’m looking for some.

Thanks in advance.

We’re in Nevada. An hour from Vegas on six acres. I grew up in CA and Oregon. Our garden is big but nothing like that dark loamy earth on the Willamette. I miss those beefsteak tomatoes and sweet corn.

Gary Near Death Valley – at 21:20

Allquietonthewesternfront you sure have that right about the dark loamy earth in the Willametter Valley. I lived out in the Molalla area most all my life, and although did not have much time to grow much of a garden, anything I did put into the ground grew well. Now where I am at now, I did create my own soil, but have to have most things shaded from the intense sun etc. I do have lots of plants etc I grow now that I did not even do in Oregon, but still would love to have a dump truck load of the Willamette Valley soil anytime.

Allquietonthewesternfront – at 23:58

Gary - it was 110degrees here today, how about you? One good thing about living here is we can have gardens almost year around depending on what we plant. That could come in very handy in a famine situation if BF hits. May have to use the horse to haul buckets of water from the tiny creek they call a river here though if things get bad. I lived right on the Willamette. I had my own private forested island to play Indian on because people were afraid of the currents. I learned that if I kept arms and legs straight the whirlpools wouldn’t get me. I love it here but miss it there. Got tired of rusting in the winter though.

Yes know what you mean Allquietonthewesternfront, and I do miss it also, but also love the desert I am in. Having a problem today with my solar system, have had it now about 7 years, and one of the invertors seems to be malfunctioning and I cannot connect to the grid like normal. Plus my batteries have about had it, good they lasted for 7 years though, so now am debating about doing an open heart surgery on the solar and disconnecting it from the house and just go grid. Then I could sell off my 22 solar panels and 4 wind generators, etc. I can pump out of the well if the grid went down, and have an emergency supply of around 800 gallons as back up anyway till I could put the hand pump to work. Will wait for the little lady to get home from her Art and Sol in the park and see what she would like to do. I am 60 now so may not be worth it to put any more money into that system. It was enjoyable while it lasted but now, I think more economical to hang it up and sell off what I can. Dont have any creek here (heavens in the Pahrump Valley no standing water around at all), but could use the well if needed in a pinch.

Hey Gary, call me Allquiet, although I don’t know what I’ll call myself when things are no longer quiet on the western front as far as BF is concerned. Thank goodness you have a well. The good thing there is that if BF hits and infects the water, your well would be safe, the river wouldn’t without boiling or treatment. I’ve read the virus lives in water for about twenty days. Yeah, I have turned into a desert rat also but sometimes I daydream about the lush land of my youth. Seriously, though, too much rain for me there. Good luck with your solar system. I’m a bit nervous about BF hitting with this weather. Worst May I’ve seen. I was disgusted when my husband called from work Thursday and said it was 110 here in Moapa. Yuck. We have to get a generator or I could plumb expire it power went out.

Gary Near Death Valley – at 10:51

My wife and I decided to go ahead and disconnect from the solar and go back on grid. As far if things really go bad and in the worst worst worst case, the grid expires itself (which I dont really see happening but could I guess), we would be alright no matter what. We already have the latern backups for lights, the well and storage for water, the only thing would be the lack of ice and refrigeration, but all of our storage items are either dry or freeze dried, so that would not be a problem. And of course the swamp cooler would not be working but even that can be tolerated. And did you see where the desert southwest will be hit with a “Super El-Nino” next winter time? Can give you the site if you want it, so I have gotten 4 dump trucks of gravel for my 600 foot driveway if needed. I was here for the 1998 El-Nino and it was a wet one and that was just a normal one. Now the weather people are calling for a “super” one. So maybe we will be able to sit on the front porch, as the rain comes down, eating popcorn, and telling ourselves, “Yep, this looks like the Willamette Valley,,,,,,,,,,,,NOT!”

Allquietonthewesternfront – at 11:54

Ouch Gary, no I hadn’t heard about the super el nino. Last year we were flooded out. Very scary for the kids. Twenty foot wave of water came down the Muddy River. Lots of damage. I hope you’re not in a flood plain. I would appreciate the site. I’m glad you got the gravel.

Gary Near Death Valley – at 22:42

Allquiet here is the site http://standeyo.com/NEWS/06_Earth_Changes/060411.El.Nino.winter.html www.standeyo.com is a very good site with information etc.

Thanks, Gary.

old duck hunter – at 23:12

I have been living off and on in Nevada for 20 years, I have followed the BF since it first came to light and have been trying to get waterfowl people to pay attention to what may be coming.

Gary Near Death Valley – at 23:16

No I am not in a flood plain, I checked that out when I put in the property but it still could get real wet for sure. But the house is above the road so wont be a problem, but it sure made for a muddy mess. Hope you did not receive any damage during that time, I saw it on TV what a mess there.

22 May 2006

Allquietonthewesternfront – at 00:15

Gary, actually we had a fair bit of damage. Our road was the one all the media showed, being the worst. They liked to show our horse who was up on a high piece of land in front of the house. Most of our neighbors got it worse and had to completely gut their houses. We only lost a few thousand worth of stuff. We moved from Overton to here, Moapa. Same valley but opposite ends. Pretty exciting stuff for the fire department to come by just as the water hit high enough to really threaten us and help us to safety at five in the morning.

Old Duck Hunter - where abouts to you hang out in Nevada? Wondering since you love waterfowl if you’ve spent time at Pahranagat Lake? We used to live on a ranch out that way and loved to spend time bird watching at the lake. I would see cranes, storks and lots of fun stuff.

Gary Near Death Valley – at 00:48

I am watching the TV program 10.5 and the stuff really hit the fan on that one. Now back to us. Allquiet, do you have any solar cookers? I have two and use them alot during the summer period. I have a couple of different types and they are worth the money. I might be shutting down the solar and windmill but the solar cookers keep on cooking and the sun out here in the Pahrump Valley does well. I know you have the sun also and it works so well.

Allquietonthewesternfront – at 01:54

Gary, got to look into that. The thought of losing power in summer and having to cook over a fire sounds like hell. You know, the place. Thanks for the tip.

Gary Near Death Valley – at 01:59

Allquiet email me if you like and I will send you some pictures of my solar cookers and the like. Email is: thefiredude2000@yahoo.com also if you want I have a rather large garden area (at least for the Pahrump Valley) and have made my own soil etc, and placed some covers over part of it due to the the heat and high level UV we get here. Most people here when they do garden, have to learn about the soil conditions but the thing that really throws them a curve is the sun and too much sun on the plants.

Allquietonthewesternfront finally got the pictures to send to you of the handle on the hand pump on the well head. My computer was down for a few days, but if you still want them let me know.
