I know this is way off topic for a FLUwiki but in light of all the kindness and encouragement that I have received, and that since in the end I DID get a mastiff, maybe I should have a different thread instead of the old one asking the question Should I get a mastiff
The issue of whether one should change one’s lifestyle in anticipation of a possible pandemic is one that comes up every now and then. I guess it IS very much a personal choice but I would generally not do anything completely out of character, ie do something that you would NEVER have done if it wasn’t for that.
Maybe with the exception of writing blogs. :-)
We need the restful threads. Especially when things go haywire with the virus.
tell us how it goes with the new dog, anon_22. What’s his/her name? How old is it?
It’s nice having a dog around the house - my wife likes our dog, and especially appreciates it when:
o Doorbell rings or knock on the door - strong bark letting people know the house is being guarded
o I’m outta town on business - she says the dog is “extra protectful”
I had the good fortune of a bullmastiff buddy. Not quite so large as a mastiff, but the second best dog I ever had. (make sure you encourage exercise - they’re lazy so&sos)
Not to take up too much of this non-flu thread, but never forget the power of these animals. They may seem slow and plodding, but they have the capacity for extreme behaviors. Please be responsible. Obedience training is a must. (But make it fun-they have a great sense of humor)!
I’m so glad you found the right dog for you and your family anon_22! Like ricewiki said, please tell us all about him/her.
Right now she is snoring. My God, the floor vibrates under my feet! And rattles!
LOL
What did you name her, anon_22, or are you waiting for her to tell you her name?
AnonJessie
Now that’s catchy?
Why isn’t she sleeping in your lap? Isn’t the snoring beautiful . . . get used to it, it just gets louder.
How about “Rock”?
I wrote that on the other thread. Jessie, or Jess, or Jazz.
Oh she wants to sleep on my LAP, for sure. In fact I think she wants to sleep on my LAPTOP.
LOL
ps I had to interrupt writing/thinking about mutations and receptor bindings etc just now to feed her, take her out, bring her in, all trying to be quiet as its 2 am and I don’t exactly have a large estate! (I know you’re not supposed to feed a dog at 2 am but poor mite didn’t eat anything for half a day, that wouldn’t work), then still have to clean up her ‘accident’.
JKT and Webster have to wait!
See? I KNOW my priorities! hehehehe
She’ll eat anytime.
Moses took 10–12 pounds a day and would happily eat anytime we fed him.
Oh my, I think I’ve solved the mystery of the missing homework. You do remember the homework … that the dog ate – you know, the dog on Prince Edward Island. Well, I have it on good authority that the dog also ate the missing lab samples, sequences and all! AND, I understand from official unnamed sources that the dog was smuggled out of Canada and into the UK where it has been placed, this very day, in the care of a highly respected retired physician who has an extensive knowledge of mutations and receptor bindings. Informants tell me that in time the dog will “reveal” the missing information. We shall see.
Jess has the secrets of the sequences! I love it. She’ll either bark or slobber them to you, anon.
anon_22, You will have to read the book “Life with Marley” It is about life and love with the world’s worst dog and has a yellow lab on the cover. Anyone raising a large dog will identify with the funny dog antics in the book.
Photo, Anon? This is the wiki’s dog now.
A dog in a beehive . . .
What an image.
A dog the size of a bear in a beehive, I guess I should say?
Anon_22 - I am just thrilled about your new addition to the family, and Melanie is right - she is the wiki’s dog now - maybe she can be our official mascot.
Anon,
Add Steinbeck’s “Travels with Charlie” to the list of great dog books.
Congratulations! Wishing you many, many years of love and fun with your new family member!
Maybe if she’s placed in front of the keyboard, she’ll be so kind as to type out all the answers to the questions we post to anon_22….LOL..
A dog is an angel on 4 feet..with a snout…tail…
Yes - The wiki dog!!!!
How about JAZZ-WIKI or ‘Wiki’ for a name? Also, does she still have her ‘puppy breath’? If you’ve ever had a pup before, you’ll know what I mean, and how sweet it is. If you haven’t, then you’ll just think I’m bonkers and leave it at that! ;-)
I’m so happy for you two!
Photo, anon_22. We demand a photo.
Anon_22, your thread on the mastiff was one of the most passionate threads on wiki. EVERYONE HAD ADVICE to give you! Put up a dog-gone photo! We all feel like we helped birth this dog!
I’m so glad we don’t have puppies right now. I don’t miss taking them out every hour. Whining and crying and yelping to get into bed with you. Winding the leash around BOTH of your ankles and the deck chair so that you cannot even move to save yourself. Falling asleep with puppy face in food bowl.
Good luck with yours! Keep us updated. As you can see by the number of posts, many people are into dogs!

Congratulations on getting a Mastiff. My mastiff is about 6 years old now. When I got him at eight weeks of age he weighed about 8 pounds. He doubled in size every two weeks for a while. He went from 8 pounds at 8 weeks to 64 pounds at 14 weeks. Thankfully he started slowing down about then. Two weeks after that he was 97 pounds. Right now he weighs in somewhere between 180 to 190 pounds. They drool, they shed and they snore. A lot! Its the best dog I’ve ever owned. I suggest you check out the “Gentle Leader”. http://www.premier.com/pages.cfm?id=17 It makes it much easier to control these powerful dogs.
bird-dog at 00:30 - I know what you mean about puppy breath, human babies are like that too….ah, the sweet, soft smell of a baby’s breath (or a puppy’s breath). Now mine smell like rawhide bones. Um, that would be my dogs, not my kids.
I second, or third, or whatever number Melanie is up to now - we want a photo of Jessie.
After seeing what my Lab puppies will pick up and try to eat I am never letting them lick my face again…
Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How cute is he then???? and how big are those paws???
OK, you guys, here’s [[ | the first picture of Jessie ]]
anon_22 - well isn’t she just a-doggy-dorable!! Uh, oh, I feel an urge for another dog coming on, must go now, must fight it…..
can’t get the pm stuff to work. I gotta go now, running very late.
In the next few days, I’ll probably get some other blog going eg livejournal or whatever so I can post more pics without feeling guilty!
That looks like a full belly. She also looks like one of Thurbers dogs. I never knew a real dog who looked like his. Well Jessie, you have so many fairy grandmothers over your brindled bod. What can I give you in fairy terms that you don’t already possess. A long and happy life with your new family, I think that will be it.
so, a “mastiff” is a dog ? (I wasn’t closely following this thread…) And people think, that a mastiff would _increase_ their security in a pandemic ?
That’s a fantastic pic. The pup is clearly thinking, “Somehow I think I should be looking way down on that!”
I have wanted an American Mastiff for a few years, now. They (allegedly) do not drool as much. I love the idea of a ‘gentle giant’. After years of terriers, I’m ready for a ‘lazy’ dog! People say they are furniture that moves. My little dogs are a blur of energy, and I swear ‘terrier’ must mean “teeth” in some old language, because that’s all they are- teeth with a little dog body attached. Such barracudas in the beginning! They can’t do anything without involving their teeth. And they jump constantly, and do not tire out! I love them, but owning them is exhausting. And the breed I have often lives 14+ yrs. Folks say they play right up to their last day, too! Lots of fun, but not much rest. I must admit, I’m drawn to the idea of a dog you have to step over, instead of one constantly underfoot!
anonymous @ 12:16: mastiff = huge! When grown, they weigh as much as a man. Very imposing presence/very loud bark. A wonderful early warning system.
Anon-22: She’s gorgeous! I’m so envious!!
so it attracts attention and can be a target in a pandemic. Some infected dog-cookies or such… It might infect you or your neighbors in a pandemic. They will hate the dog.
I was wondering when the univited fairy would show up to our sleeping beauties little impromptu party. Not a spindle, just infected dog cookies. Well someone has to undo that spell. Jessie will lead a charmed life Anon 22. I’ll even try wishing on the evening star for Jessie.
Did a troll just stop by, I hope its not lurking…..
anonymous at 15:07 - and assuming it is the same anonymous, at 12:16, too - why oh why is there always someone out there who just has to try and start an argument? There are a whole bunch of other threads that have nothing to do with mastiffs - please feel free to visit them and kindly leave this thread alone.
I don’t think it’s a troll…I think it’s our German friend who sometimes views situations a bit differently than we do. Hi g :) Anon-22′s new best friend will not be roaming the neighborhood…she will probably sleep most of the day on her Mom’s bed.
Young things that are growing so fast need lots of sleep.
Thanks all. I’ve just had a extremely hectic day and it is 4 am and I’ve just sat down and logged on to get my email and check out the wiki etc. And I’m supposed to be up at 6am.
It’s going to be about the same on and off for about 10 days so if I don’t manage to post a lot that’s the reason and not because of the pup.
