I’m-workin’-on-it – at 16:59
Well, my prep for today was to buy 1.9oz bottles of Texas Pete Hot Sauce at BRUNO’S for 2/$1.00!! Great for my bug-out bag — gotta have something spicey on those MRE’s if I ever have to use ‘em. I posted somewhere else that it was Winn Dixie, but it was Bruno’s.
They have big cardboard bins in a couple of places in their store with these little plastic bottles tossed in them — if the bins were originally full, then they’ve been selling fast!!
WOW!!!!! We’ve FINALLY made it to where we get our second (continued from the first) thread!!
well how bout that.folks that think about things like i do.i thought i was all alone here in mobile co. happy to find yall.
Hey there hermit—Welcome aboard. There does seem to be a good many of us here from the Heart of Dixie. We seem to have a corner on getting ready for whatever may come.
hey, Im new here. but I’ve been prepping since Jan. Am moving myself and all my preps from Northeast Ala. to Montgomery
Hi, Anon, glad to have you here! There are people from one end of the state to the other here, which is a good thing, even if only on a small scale.
I’ve been ‘redoing’ some of the shelving in my pantry….my goal is to have my cans on one of those FIFO shelves — maybe that can be my Christmas present!!! I should put up some pictures on the Pics of Preps page.
Our state’s “PLAN” is still showing in “DRAFT” mode…..wonder when they think they might decide to do something??
thanks AP. hope for the best, plan for the worst.having been a life long south alabama man,i have seen my share of rough times in the aftermath of storms.if you remember last years kaos in the wake of katrina, you tend to depend on yourself and not any government agency state or local, although alabama is likly better than most.this thread is about prep from what i have read.good advice but we are in the minority, makes you think ps. excuse the spelling my education differs from most
Hey, HERMIT, I also live in mobile county, actually Wilmer. So glad to see someone else. I have had a busy 4 days, I canned (got my presto canner last week, yea) 4 qts. green beans with new pot. 7 qts. cooked chicken with chicken broth, 6 qts. spaghetti sauce with hamburger, 6 qts. of cooked hamburger in beef boullion, 4 qts. of butter beans with purple hull beans, and finally 7 qts of mixed turnip and collard greens. I have been cleaning out my freezer and cooking up a storm. Nice to see we finally rate a second thread, ya’ll have a great night, I am going to watch some pre=season football with my DH.
hey back at ya frankiew.we too have decided to be less dependant on the ole freezer.gas prices at 3 bucks a generator is almost out of the question just not cost effective if the power goes out.i have canned for years have two large canners ,had kids at home and a big garden back in the day.they all have moved away now but i am stocking up for them too.just in case, anybody else thinking that way.note anyone who wants to run a generator for cheap, google wood gas generator. its old tech from ww2 good stuff! i plan on a prototype this fall
Hermit, welcome! Glad south Alabama has some company — 2 preppers is better than none! :-) Hermit, education isn’t always measured through spelling or grammar….sounds like you’ve had a lot of “living going on” raising your family, gardening, etc. and that’s the best education you can get.
The wood gas generator sounds interesting….I’ll google it.
Frankview, you’ve been BUSY! Good for you. I’ve got to start canning some stuff, but I had to arrange for a place to put the jars first, so now that I’ve got that covered, it’s just a matter of doin’ it.
Ok, you Alabamians….wipe the sweat from your brow & everyone check in this week so we’ll know you’re all out there and doing OK. My prep for this week will be to start canning something…..I’ll figure out what during the day today.
What are the rest of you up to???
Well, I found a Winn-Dixie catalina for $10.00 off a $40.00 purchase (like finding a ten dollar bill) so I guess I’ll get some “freebies” at the local WD.
Food World has got a good deal going; buy multiples of certain items and get catalinas for up to $3.00 off next purchase. One of them is the store brand snack crackers, peanut butter, cheese, those sort. They last a long time, and have an expiration date that’s pretty far out there. I like to keep these on hand for a quick snack with a Diet Dr. Pepper. :^}
Also, they’ve got Kraft mayo, 5 for $5 on the same deal. Most of the items I don’t normally use, but there is a two page spread in their ad showing all of ‘em.
Nothing new here at the house, its just been too hot to do much of anything requiring physical effort.
Really, really need to get more paper towels….Dollar General has disappointed me, changing their DG brand ($1 roll towels) to a cheaper, thinner, smaller towel. They were very, very nice, then I guess the bean counters decided to cut the quality. Now I’m back to buying national brands, using coupons, and checking sheet size and quantity.
Also need to pick up on catfood and reload their cabinet area. And, get one of those storage bins from WM to put the dry in.
Just need a ton of money, is all. (ha!)
OK, I give up what is a catalina?
frankview…I was wondering the same thing!!
I agree a ton of money would help each and every one of us meet the month’s wish list! :-) Then we’d need another ton for the next month!
Serves me right. I forget not everyone is into couponing.
A catalina is the coupon you get at the register when you get your grocery receipt. It has the red border on it and comes out of the little machine to the side of the register.
It is triggered by certain purchases you make. A competitor, for example, will have the computer programmed to see that you bought the other company’s product, so it will generate a coupon for theirs, to get you to buy it.
Sometimes they are generated by the supermarket chain, and will be for a flat amount off your next grocery purchase. This is where the Winn-Dixie catalina came from. It is a good will gesture to their best customers, after all $10 off is pretty good.
There is a good coupon forum on which the members will list the catalinas they get from food, drug, and other stores, and what may have triggered them. Hotcouponworld.com, not a link. I am not a member yet, but lurk there occasionally.
One of my best shopping trips using coupons was a month or so ago, when I cut $80. off my total. Food World is cool with taking them, they double up to .50 cents, so you get a dollar off with one. Walmart is picky, or rather each cashier has their own little regimen about taking coupons. Some just scan them and act like its no big deal. Others will stop and read every word on the things and look thru your purchase to see if you actually bought the product. All they have to do is run it in front of the scanner and the computer does the rest, but some of them have to act silly about it.
A catalina is also a car made by Pontiac, and an island off the coast of California. (In case there is a trivia test later!)
Checking in from the Montevallo area. Been on the Wiki since Feb of this year. Well prepped. Just been Laid-back,Lurking, & Learning this summer.
Western Etowah County reporting in, as requested.
Purchased 50 pound bag of long grain rice @ Sam’s to go with all the different beans we have. I figure I’ll pick up another couple of bags when I get storage space reallocated. I think rice is about the cheapest carbohydrate around and easiest to cook.
2 cups rice + 4 cups water + oil + salt. Bring to a boil; cover; let it sit for about 30 minutes; voila = perfect rice.
I would like to find out a total of preppers in Alabama. I think a lot of them are lurking, but not coming in to add to the knowledge base.
We need input and ideas. It might be “THE” deciding factor for someone out there. Thanks!!
Hide-in-the-Hills (and wait) – at 10:39 you are soooo right. I HOPE there are lurkers out there from Alabama just waiting to introduce themselves today!
AlabamaPrepper – at 12:55 I love shopping with coupons too, & save some of those red striped catalinas when I get them, but I just never knew what they were called!!! Thanks!
One of my “things to do” is going to be to practice making cornbread — read on another thread here about using corn to help complete a protein, like we use beans to do the same, PLUS it means having another bread that’s useful for either mealtime or dessert, depending on how you make it.
Anyway, it seems I have an unending list of things to do!
War Eagle from this Bham girl! (maybe that’ll get a response from a lurker or two) :-)
hi everyone …. i’m from jackson county . just found this site
last week … really enjoy it. Been prepping a long time ….
Hello..anyone here from DeKalb County? I’ve been prepping for 7 months. I live near the GA/AL line. Dade/Dekalb Counties. Lots of people are prepping in these areas, they’re just not telling anyone. You know how secret mountain people are. ;.)
Mountain Man and Carol, welcome aboard! I have distant family up around the Jackson County family, nice to hear word is spreading up there — but then most folks who are “from” that area have sense enough to stay stocked up on somet things….maybe not all they’d need for something like a pandemic, but at least for bad weather & that’s a good start! I’m also glad that our eastern state friends are getting the job done. Good to see that you’ve found us — there’s a TON of info here that you can ‘share’ with other people simply by putting together flyers & posting them on bulletin boards at your grocery stores & stuff like that, if you have a desire to spread the word.
Are any of you prepping for a LARGE family/friends like over 10 or just for 3, 4, or 8 of you, for example.
I’m prepping for 4 — myself & husband, my brother & his wife.
Sayin’ “Hey” to all the new Alabama folks.
Looks like Alabama will be well represented on the other side of whatever may be coming at us. There will be plenty of us left to start over, and that’s a Good Thing.
I’m not from AL but not to far from it. Just took a peak at ya’lls thread and wanted to say a big “Hello” from Pensacola. I’m also glad to find others out there not so far away that are prepping. On the FL thread I think I’ve counted at least five others from the P’Cola area. Keep on the look out and keep on prepping!!
Mountain Man and Carol: Y’all are just up the road a “piece” from me. I’ve got relatives in Cherokee County (Ellison’s Crossroad, I think) and Sand Rock. You don’t have to worry about getting crowded out up where you are.
Anybody have experience in making pemmican or jerky? I’m looking for an easy way. Is there one??
Somebody told me tonight (I had no idea you could do this) that if you have a canner that needs checking out or repair, you can take it into your county agent’s office and they will inspect it (for safety) and get you parts to repair/replace to make it safe to use. Anyone heard of this service?? I have an old one with no weight for it that I am going to take to them.
Okay people-----we need more lurkers to get involved. I’m the one who is usually lurking in background of every picture. Oh yeah, there he is….
We can accomplish more together than we can separately!!!! THAT IS THE POINT…
Hey to all the Alabamians. Reading when I can, not posting as much these days because I’m working all the time. Much overtime in my life right now, which is a good thing (I can sure use it to support my preps…uh…I mean my family….ha).
Hide-in-the-hills—I don’t know about the canner, but I’ve talked to the extension agent here in Calhoun several times about things like best ways to store canned or dry goods for the long term, and she’s been super helpful. I think most of the county extension folks actually like to answer questions.
Just a reminder to all the Alabamians, each county is charged during this month with completing its individual pandemic flu plan. At the end of the month, they’ll be posted on the Alabama Department of Public Health website (adph.org) for review and public comment. I don’t think that this will be publicly announced, as I don’t think they really want the public to review too much. Also, someone at your county health dept. knows who is in charge of your local planning at this point, if you are interested in asking them questions about your local plan. I just got the name of my local person a couple of weeks ago, and plan to call (if I ever get an hour or so off…) next week. If I find out anything useful, I’ll post it for the group.
Happy prepping to all. Big hello to the new folks. Galt
Hey Hide-in-the-Hills: The best beef jerky I’ve ever eaten was made by one of the guys at the plant. “Benney”. If he still works there, ask him.
P’cola prepper – at 21:44 Hey, company’s always welcome here! Thanks for stopping by! I’m so glad that you’ve found some folks in your same city that are prepping….so far us Alabamians are a little spread out. Hopefully we have some more lurkers out there & hopefully when the counties post their plans the news media will cover it & that will create some more interest. Maybe we should all write our local news media & tell them to be on the lookout for the reports & give them the fluwikie website (be sure & include the “e” on wikie) for reference.
I saw figs at the local Publix — a pkg for $6!!!!! OUCH! They also had muscadines at $4 a pop for a little crate…..I wonder how much you need to make muscadine jelly?? Anyone know? I’ve never done jelly, jam or preserves, before, but I’m thinking, I can’t beat Smuckers on most flavors, but since they don’t do muscadine, maybe I will. Gotta find a recipe…….
Galt, you’re right, that overtime can be crucial right now….I don’t have kids, but with school starting/started and all the cost involved in that, it’s huge to even have ANY extra money right now for people with kids. And the rest of us…well, I doubt any of us are filthy rich…maybe filthy with garden-rich soil, but all of us could put extra funds to use. :-) Enjoy it while it lasts, if there’s any way to enjoy work!
ALA PREP: I think the “Benney” you’re talking about is retired now.
Hide-in-the-Hills: His son, Tony. When I left he was in maint. Nickname is Benney. Made some mighty good jerky, used hot pepper on it. I made some at home, but it wasn’t as good as his.
Ala Prep: Got ya!! Know who you mean. I’ll check with him. Thanks!!
I just bought a Ronco dehydrator at Big Lots on Greensprings Highway today for $30 (the other 2 BL’s I’d been to didn’t have any-didn’t have time to check to see if it was a great deal or just a good deal…just put it in the cart & bought it. So share your recipe if you find Benney!!
hey I am from bibb county. my biggest prep so far is a large patch of “ground nut” I inherented when I purchased my property. It is s well known wild edible potato llike plant. It really is awsome, there are little tubers all in the ground here. I have been studying wild edibles for years and can pick out about 100 local useful plants, maybe 15 or so that will really help a lot. Pawpaw fruits are common here in bama. If anyone wants some more of my local knowledge let me know.
Simplelife, sounds interesting! We’re lucky to have an abundance of wild edibles in AL. How are you storing some of your wild treasures?
I am trying to learn one’s that I dont have to store, just pick and eat when ready. The groundnut can be eaten any time of year and is ideal survival food.
I am slowly transplanting many eatibles to my 7 acrea spread. I got some ground cherry (chinese lantern) the other day from a river bank. Its doing well.
Don’t forget about “poke salad”, plantain, sumac berries (high in vitamin C; used by Indians to make lemonade), camibian layer of deciduous trees, acorns (leach out the tannins), hickory nuts, and pine needle tea.
Looks like you can find the vittles HITH’s.
I do enjoy plantain simmered in my chicken soup as a base to get the good minierals. I take the stringy leafs out though after cooking.
Do you have pawpaw fruit up your way? Lots of calories(good for survival) and not bad tasting either. it is a weed around my place.
Simplelife: heard of pawpaw. Where I was, it was a nickname for a papaya tree fruit. That’s not what you are talking about though, I bet. But, they are tasty too. Tropical fruit, very, very good for indegestion and heartburn.
anyone saving garden seed,just wondering.
Hey,ya’ll I have been getting a wide variety of garden seed from big lots, dollar general, and hudsons salvage, the most I have pd is 10 cents a pkg. As ya’ll know we have a very long growing season here in Alabama, so I am purchasing multiple pkgs. of favorite vegetables and fruits. I stopped canning for a little bit, giving myself a break because school has started here, even though we home-school, still try to keep approx. same start date. Have slowed down a little bit on prepping, but my DH has increased, he is now feeling some of the pressure and getting more into the defense for our family and finally building our solar oven. Ya’ll have a good=night and talk to you later.
I’ve been out of touch the last few days. I am re-modeling my porch; replacing warped pressure treated columns with 6″x6″ Western cedar. Been working on it all week. It is sure hot. It would be nice if there was something new to read in the way of prepping, stocking up, etc. Is anyone doing anything? Or, is it just too hot to move?
well, they say a picture is worth a thousand words…..I just posted my pics of some of my preps on the Pictures of Preps thread…..go take a look! Be sure to drink a lot of iced tea to keep cool!
IWOI—Wow, what some great preps! I would love to have that much space for storage. Hey, I think that you were one of the folks posting a lot on the dehydrating thread. Do you ever worry about food poisoning with dehydrating? Do you think it would be easy to tell if something you dehydrated had gone bad? I’d love to try it, but I have a terrible fear of poisoning my family (I am not the cook here in the Galt household and the resident cook is unamused by suggestions re: adding canning or dehydrating to the other daily cooking burdens….;> ). Also, how would you rate the Werling and Sons and other canned meat products in your preps?
Also for frankiew and any other canners, same general questions re: canning ground beef. Is meat canning something that a person of normal intelligence with a set of directions could do without poisoning loved ones? Is it obvious if canned meat has “gone off”? Thanks for any info.
Random thoughts: Hope all the Alabamians are doing well. Pretty scary stuff re: the Indo numbers these days. Man, is it hot here in Bama. Rayovac batteries on sale BOGO at Winn-Dixie this week.
Galt
I fried my hamburger, then drined it in a colander over an old coffee can, then ran HOT, HOT water over it to drain off the rest of the grease. Made some beef boullion in another pot and brought this to a boil. Put my hamburger in a quart jar 1/2 way, filled to top with 1/2 in header with beef boullion and canned 10 lbs. pressure for 90 min. There was still a little grease on top of jar, but not enough to cause a problem. This is the first year that I have canned meat, have always done tomatoes, etc. So this is a new experience for me, but the directions are easy to follow, now where did I get my directions, let me look around and see if I can find that information. I have also canned chicken (white breast meat with chicken boullion) de-boned chicken with chicken bouillon (do not use the broth chicken cooked in, to greasy). I used two jars of chicken yesterday to make home-made chicken noodle soup, 20 minutes from opening jar to putting on table, that was awesome. I have put prepping on hold for a little bit, had to help my daughter with finances to get her 3 kids in school (single mom who is struggling) Talked to DH last night and am going to start back up tomorrow with some additional preps, propane, more insulin, etc. Have not been outside today, we have been steadily home-schooling and this has been my first break today. Talk to ya’ll later, love ya fellow ALABAMIANS.
Hey everyone, The Werling meats are quite good & I hope to add more to my stash!
Canning of foods is a good safe way to prolong the life of a food. Get a Ball Canning book from eBay, or Amazon, or at a yard sale or just find the text online somewhere & follow the directions to a T. Do NOT skip or deviate or only do something half-assed, as they say. This is not a place to compromise what you’re doing to save time or money, etc. But if you follow the directions exactly, you will certainly enjoy the results.
I haven’t canned meat just by itself, always did meat & chili sauce, but I’m considering doing so. There’s one trick I learned from a Yahoo group I belong to —actually I belong to a bunch of Yahoo groups — a Once A Month Cooking, a Canning, A Freezing, and a Vacuum Sealing group and love the information you can get there! Anyway on the Once A Month Cooking, the idea is to spend one day cooking up lots of stuff to freeze so that you have meals for a week or for 2 weeks or even for a whole month, depending on what you want to do. They highly recommend that you boil the hamburger meat & it’s a wonderful thing to do. You can boil a HUGE pot of meat easily and without the grease splatter!! It cooks very evenly, fast and like I said, no mess. You scoop it out of the water and I wash it with the sink sprayer, and then drain it really well, and then I put it in Food Saver bags and freeze it for use in soups, tacos, casseroles, etc.
Once you’ve boiled the meat, you can make broth from the remaining water, so if you’re canning, you’ve got your broth already there without having to make it.
Honestly, this is the first week that I’ve dehydrated and so far so good! Boy the stuff sure shrinks up! I haven’t compared the cost of buying canned dry peppers or onions for example with the cost of buying fresh and drying myself, and it may be more cost effective to buy professionally dried stuff for LONG term storage, but for routine usage so that you have the taste of fresh peppers, celery, etc. in the middle of winter it’s probably well worth it!
Nothing going on here, either. Too hot and too broke. :^(
This may be already posted and discussed, and I usually miss the bus on things, so I’ll put it here and hope that it is news.
Was looking through the Bass Pro Shops 2006 catalog today, and wowzas, have they ever got some good things to have for preps.
Camping gear, outdoor cooking, a gizmo that lets you make jerky from hamburger meat (spits it out in strips), all kinds of neat things. The “Jerky Cannon”. $50.
I have not been to their web site, but I would imagine its all there, too. The catalog has just been lying here, and I finally opened it today and browsed through.
We are promised a Bass Pro Shop store down I-20 at Leeds one day soon. If there is one in your area, go by and take a look, or request a catalog.
Katadyne backpacking and portable water filters, stealth game cameras, LED flashlights, a nifty little 3 bulb LED light that snaps onto the brim of your cap, a gourmet camp stove (with an oven), Lodge cast iron cookware, and on and on. Candy store for an outdoor enthusiast or prepper.
check out sportsmansguide.com for new and surplus goods.I have found some good deals on some hard to find items.also on the home canning,if you can find a copy of stocking up from rodale press it will help with food preservation info.canning, curing drying and more.I havent read it in years ,but if memory serves me right,it is one of the best.a tip for newbes at food storage, keep your stockpile cool and never let it see the light of day, date and rotate.stock what you and your folks like.comfort food you know.makes bad times a little better.yep!
yawn…….we’re relaxing and listening to this wonderful rain we’re getting……sigh…..it’s almost hard to think about preps with a summer night of rain!
But, on the prepping note, I need to buy a gun eventually (just so you know I’m on my toes, I proofed the first sentence before posting this and realized I’d typed that I need to buy a ‘guy’--lordy I don’t need another one of those, since I already have the best one of the bunch!)
….we have a .38 which would probably just make someone maddern’ hell if I hit’ ‘em with it anywhere except dead on (pun intended). So……a 9mm Glock, some sort of shotgun or a rifle (we’re in a suburb off Hywy 280 going through Shelby County) and should I buy new for some particular reason or would it be OK to shop at a Pawn Shop? What would be considered a deal on prices? And can you take a rifle or shotgun to a practice range or just handguns? It’s been so durn long since we’ve handled our .38 that I wouldn’t even call myself trained on it either, so I’ve got to renew our license & then start shopping! Is there a book called Evaluating Guns for Dummies?? Any advice????
I am fond of the Ruger P89 automatic with 15 round after-market magazines as a handgun option. For home defense, my choice would be a Remington 870 short barrel shotgun with folding stock and magazine extension added to it. For a choice of battle rifle, my preference is not cheap. It is an HK 91 in .308 caliber. Second choice is one of the AK-47′s on the market that is relatively inexpensive compared to the HK. They have the fire power but, I don’t trust them at long range. Hope this helps!! Again, these are my personal choices. I trust these firearms.
Hide in the Hills (and wait) that’s what I need to know — what people KNOW will be dependable! Thanks & I’ll copy & start hunting around (no pun intended).
I just have to brag….we bought gas yesterday for $2.589 on top of Sand Mountain in north AL yesterday. When we started off our trip, we filled up for $2.68 in Bham, then later noticed a sign for gas at $2.60 on Sand Mountain when we grabbed a bite to eat at Zaxby’s. All other places it was $2.699 on the mountain, so we figured when we drove back by we’d doublecheck the price. Well, by 6pm, they’d lowered the price to $2.589 so we filled up again — 5 whole gallons! I’ve gotten to where I rarely let the tank get below 3/4 of a tank so we didn’t ‘save’ much, but there was just something pleasant about standing under that $2.589 sign pumping away — and we weren’t alone! cars were lined up!
I don’t know what Raceway is selling for today, they’re usually the lowest in just about any area of town, but I’ll be filling up again before the holiday weekend because I figure it’ll creep up some for the holiday.
I’m gonna have to start doing ebay listings again to afford a gun by Christmas! better get busy! Thanks!
Oh I forgot to mention….I saw 4 of the cutest — large — puppies yesterday….purebred with papers that will be given away………Great Danes. Good security dog……….post here if you’re interested in info & can give vet references that can be verified.

Acquiring a major prep item here later today.
(ahem) Remington 12 gauge shotgun.
Very nice.
Hey, way to GO!! I at least got off my butt and got our concealed permits renewed yesterday — now I can go buy more ammo, clean the durn gun, & move on to looking at shotguns like you and Hide in the Hills and Wait have, AK47’s or whatever I end up with for Christmas!!
AlaPrepper, I can just hear that pump action all the way over here! :-)
There’s nothing I love more than the sound of a racking shotgun. The other thing I love the sound of is a steam locomotive.
Unfortunately, sound-wise, this is an automatic. Unfortunate, also for the varmit, two or four legged, who gets in front of it.
Hey, I got to tell yall about my grocery rodeo today. Food World is having some good specials, one of which is buy 1, get 2 free. I got 12 pounds of rice for 56 cents, using my coupons.
Good thing I like rice. I’ve got a truckload of it already. Laughs….

Hermit, fellow Mobilian here, Glad to see some people from my part of the woods prepping…..LOL
Frankiew…wow, another Mobile prepper, so proud of ya’ll!!
NoFluingAround – at 22:01 Hey! I figured you’d hunted for this thread but it was soooooooooooooo far down the list…….guess we’ve all been pretty busy doin’ somthin’ but I don’t know what. :-) Come on ‘fess up, what y’all been up to? ( how’s THAT for sounding Southern?)
I’m-workin’-on-it – at 22:16
Ok, so, for the past 4 months, I have been prepping. My kids have always washed their hands prior to having their meals, they carry individual Germ X bottles to school in their pocket, basically, we have made good hygiene a part of their everyday life. My 5 year old has Asthma, so a common cold for him could very easily turn into pneumonia(been there, done that), primarily, this is the reason I am so germ conscious(kids call me a germaphobe), There is a point to this story, I swear….LOL, Anywho, my daughter had a couple of friends over to spend the weekend, they went to her room, did the girly thing for a while, then came to the table for supper, when I heard one of the girls caughing profusely, had no idea she was sick, She did not cover her caught, and grabbed a spoon to serve herself, OMG….OMG, I almost had a heart attack, I stopped her, asked her to please wash her hands, cover her caughs, and call her mother to pick her up when she was finished eating. She did, mother nor child were happy. Now to bring my saga to a close, My daughter, sick 2 days later, next day my oldest son, and today the 5 year and I……. and the moral of the story is, no matter how prepared you are, your still not prepared, got to work on the passing of germs. Going to start working on that sick room tomorrow, if I cannot keep a simple cold from going H2H, how the heck am I going to do this in a pandemic.
Hopless in Mobile :o(
Yeah, you are soooooo right! My husband works in a building heavily populated with people with kids (we have cats not kids) and during the winter when he comes home I have him almost to where he’ll come in and wash his hands every time……but I’ve put a decorative pedestal in the foyer with GermX on it and since you have to go down 5 steps to leave the foyer and come into the house, I’m going to hang a “wash your hands” sign over the stairs so that it hits him in the head as a reminder!
I’ve bought some supplies for a sick room setup, but I haven’t organized it & I need to — it’s sure not something I need to wait until we’re sick to attempt to do!
My goal is to print out pictures of every area (I haven’t posted them all) where supplies are so that I can put it in a ‘master notebook’ & if someone needs something & I’m the one that’s sick, which is most likely what will happen, (DH builds up immunity at work to routine seasonal stuff, but brings it all home to me!)
then he can look in the pictures for what he wants rather than having to tear the house apart!
I’m-workin’-on-it – at 08:15 My attempts to find prep pics on this site have been futile, or maybve I’m doing something wrong ;o)
Hey ya’ll fellow Alabamians!! I have been prepping for school, thought I would let my 11 yr.old try middle=school (big mistake). He has not been sick in over 2 yrs, and was there 3 days, head cold, sniffles, sore throat and fever. Talked to DH and son and decided to homeschool again for at least all of middle school. I know, should have kept him out, but for many different reasons, thought I would try Mobile county school system again. We did protection prepping also this past month, ammunition, fishing tackle, and thermoses(end of summer sales). Family is going to big hunting/game fair in downtown Mobile, maybe we can get some ideas on camping and such that we have not thought of, then find it cheaper somewhere else, LOL. I am so glad to see some other fellow Mobile county, have you noticed, bird flu, pandemic, or anything even close to that never gets mentioned in the local press=register. Well time to start classes, talk to ya’ll later and have a blessed day.

AlabamaPrepper – at 17:58 Amazing deal you got on the rice!!! Hope you have it bagged up & stored by now!
My big prep for the day was to take all 5 of my cats into the vet’s for their shots! Boy I’m bushed now!
NoFluingAround hope that link works for you — don’t forget to jump over to the thread called Pictures of Preps & at the top of the thread, click on the word “here” to take you to the first posts of the thread….somewhere along the thread you’ll find some links that others posted!
frankview, I’m sooooo sorry your babe got sick! Hope all is well now! That’s the trouble I have with my husband — he works outside the home, I stay home and am germ concious, he brings germs home, having sort of built up an immunity to them & I’m the one who gets sick!
Are you still canning?? I’ve not done a thing — I lost a couple of days with having the car in the shop……but I’ve dehydrated some things. I like not having to babysit whatever I’m doing & dehydrating means I can walk away after getting it set up.
I’m-workin’-on-it –
OMG!!! Look at your preps, kudos, great job!!
Hey,ya’ll. I have put canning on hold for right now. My freezer is almost empty and we had so many other things to do this August. But, figs are coming in, so I might try some fig preserves, 3 big trees in my back yard. I am waiting for hamburger to go on sale again, so I can put some of that up. Used my first jar of home-made canned spaghetti sauce the other night, so easy and fast. When my DH had the bad head cold, I opened a jar of canned chicken w/broth, cut up celery, brought to a boil with wide egg noodles and had home-made chicken noodle soup in about 20 min. Our preps around here have been things like, eye-doctor appt w/new glasses, teeth checked and cleaned and one cavity filled with 11 yr. You know, that kind of stuff.I get the impression that there is a sense of urgency, yet everyone around me is sort of like dream walking thru life, does that make sense? I want to, and have, walk up to my neighbors and say please pay attention, but I just get that look like I have gone off the deep end. It’s tiring on my part and frustrating, anyone have any suggestions on another type of approach. Well, now I am rambling and I think I am going to fix me a glass of ice tea and go and sit on my front poarch swing and enjoy the afternoon. Talk to ya’ll later, God bless ya.
Hey folks, take a moment to read this!
I wanted to mention to you, since they’re not pushing it on fluwikie, that the fluwikie ‘powers that be’ have achieved non-profit status & gave an address for donations in one of the Ask the Moderators threads. I hunted it down and posted it below in case you want to write it down & send them some helpful funds every once in awhile — a dollar or $5 or more; I’m sure that anything you can send would be gratefully appreciated. Send checks, or cash at your own risk.
I can’t express to you how much fluwikie has changed my life — I THOUGHT I was prepared for anything after Y2k, but never considered how we would get along if one or both of us was seriously sick. Only after camping out here and learning from all the folks here so many valuable lessons & tips, do I really feel prepared for handling illness along with a serious crisis.
Not only that, but my skill levels have increased, from learning more about using my canner/pressure cooker, to dehydrating, to solar understanding, etc.
If you can relate to anything I’ve mentioned, then please consider sending these guys a donation — I’d love to hear that they were swamped with donations from Alabama!!
Thanks for listening, my envelope is going out tomorrow!

One other thing I wanted to mention to you guys that I had posted on another thread was that if you’re ‘into’ trying to figure out balanced meals & stuff from your preps, you might want to try a website that I use to track my calories, fat, carbs, and all kinds of nutrients compared to my activities that burn calories, etc. I use www.fitday.com
Try it out — play with it some — it’s very versatile and you can add and delete stuff at a whim. Here’s what I wrote to someone on another thread about fitday:
I’m soooo glad that you found it helpful! Use the setup goals for best tracking of your progress — there’s one report that shows a graph with a slanted line downward from where you are to where you want to be with your weight, then it shows each day’s entry by weight as little grey dots that are connected so that line bounces around and should follow the red line. I’d started out below the red slanted line, but right now I’m above it. So I went ‘off’ my caloric count for awhile to let my body rest, and first of next week I’ll be back ‘on’ again, trying to get below the red line!
I have to tell you that it’s interesting to track the preps we eat on fitday — it helps me to see if we’re getting balanced meals or if I’m heavy on the carbs (almost always am), etc.
The BEST help that fitday has been with prepping is that I can take Kathy’s (and other posters) recipes over in the food threads, and enter them under “new foods” to check to see what the ratios of fat to carbs to proteins are and write that down under the recipes — just like they do in recipe books — for future use. You don’t have to leave the foods saved in fitday, you can delete them when you get through with copying the information over so it doesn’t clutter up your fitday food files.
OK, so a little off the subject here, but I simply must share this story. Not sure if you guys have played the game “telephone” (great memory game for kids). This is how it is played, the first person writes something on a piece of paper and shows it to the next person, he in turn is to repeat it verbatim, and so on and so forth. The idea of the game is to see how many facts get changed when something is repeated to several different people and what the end result is. Here goes, my daughter went first and this is what she wrote “Roses are Red, Violets are Blue, I don’t know how to beat the Flu”, It was hilarious!!! Had a lot of fun with the kids tonight, made light about the BF. I think they are a little afraid, and this was a good outlet for them. :o)
That sounds like a fun time! We all have to laugh at ourselves at times — afterall, if anyone else had as many parts and pieces to their ‘hobby’ as WE do, we’d consider them a little overboard I guess too! Stepping back & gaining perspective is a good thing!
