Michelle, Did a quick search on the two names listed above.

Found these sites, but do not have time to translate them…….

However, at least one of these sites in an influenza H5N1 blog in French. I didn’t know if the translation page would come out so both are here. Could be another good source for information.

toggletext from republika.com- “ Bird flu claimed First fatalities in Sulsel

Makassar-RoL — A student was 14 years old was named Akhira, was stated positive suffered bird flu.
Akhira died on June 24, in the last three months, but results of his laboratory were just known, on Thursday (7/9).

Akhira was recorded as casualties died 48th resulting from the bird flu sufferer in Indonesia.
For the South Sulawesi territory, he was casualties died first.
South Sulawesi Governor, HM Amin Syam regretted the delay produced by the test of casualties’s blood that died resulting from this bird flu.
The sufferer died since three months and his notification just arrived yesterday.
Why did the Department of Health ignore the sending sample this blood, he said.
According to Amen, if since the beginning was informed, then his side could carry out strategic steps to prevent increasingly expanded him this virus.

However the official was from the South Sulawesi livestock breeding service seen visited the location of the house.”

http://www.republika.co.id/online_detail.asp?id=263832&kat_id=23

So Akhira was H5N1 positive and died with ‘fever breathlessness and sick chest’. Two of her family members were ill with the same symptoms and died, but never had samples taken for testing. I think it’s safe to say it’s very likely that they died from H5N1 too- but why weren’t samples taken?

pugmom – at 15:06

So Akhira died and so did her sister Andri and so did her mother Hj. The question is: when did the other 2 die? In June as well, was it H2H? I will go try to find more info. They did say the incubation period was “through,” and alluded to the fact this all happened in June. Has anybody heard those names before??

Hi Everyone, back after two days away. With respect to the French site quoted at the beginning of the thread. It contains nothing new. In fact, most French sources of information are usually a verbatim translation of news written in English. I occasionally do searches in the French Google just in case, well just in case some birds/farms/humans get sick in France, French-speaking Africa or ex-colonies, but otherwise I don’t bother reading French fora/blogs anymore, it’s a total loss of time.

At the site I mention above, check out the “Weather in Indonesia” at the bottom of the page. When it pops up, scroll down towards the bottom. Wow! I think we have found our site concerning weather conditions in every city in Indonesia.

Michelle in OK – at 17:35

Hi all. Regarding the patients in Palu, I think it is possible that the two additional patients were a part of the 5 which ended up testing negative. I tend to think we should add only the police officer in addition to the five we had already, unless different names end up surfacing.

Regarding the article Mama posted about Central Sulawesi at 14:37, this statement was made, At this time, the health service recorded had 18 patients suspect bird flu. June is before our time frame, but on the other hand, we’re trying to capture suspected cases which are being tested. I think I’ll note them on the spreadsheet but not include them in the count.

Michelle in OK – at 17:57

I spent some time yesterday trying to track cumulative cases so we will know if we’ve picked up the same number of positives as Indonesia and the WHO. The next time the spreadsheet is uploaded, there will be numbers in the TESTED column and numbers in the DIED column to keep a running total.

Michelle in OK – at 21:00

Question for any with medical expertise. Previous discussions have stated that bird flu doesn’t spread easily because it has not gained the ability to infect the upper respiratory tract. If it gained this ability, would early blood tests be negative? Is the article at 20:47 a concern?

pugmom – at 21:17

Michelle at 20:47. They took the sample of blood on Friday, and one day later they say they are all negative? Strange. Also, I think in the early testing stage, they are supposed to take naso-pharyngeal samples, which can give you PCR results in 3–4 days. Straight-ole Influenza A tests, also done on mucous, come back real quick, like hours. When they say they take blood tests, it always stymies me. I still can’t figure out their testing strategy, and I have read oodles about it and even one article last week I posted written by a doctor on the ground who outlined what I said above. Why is this such a mystery to me? What is in the rest of you folk’s minds?? Serial blood sampling is usually started for antibody testing sometime after the 3rd week. Oh, well, I guess I will never understand it.

Michelle in OK 21:00 earlier in this thread there was a post from Frenchie Girl about ‘’‘puyuh” or quails which she believed had gotten infections in the upper respiratory tract. One of the outbreaks in Durenan involved quails.(Sept 6 post).

I don’t see ‘upper’ in the translation. Test results negative but uncertainty exists due to ISPA (I think it’s ARDS which means lower).

Tamiflu allocated to 16 districts (as possible precursor to throw Tamiflu blanket?) which means there’s a lot of fear and confusion in the minds of the officials.

Article about the June victims interesting reading.

It was related that the Citizen died It Was Suspected MAKASSAR Bird Flu — the Official of the Marine Service, fisheries, and Makassar Livestock Breeding examined several tails of the chicken in Street.Maccini Middle, on Friday September 8.That was related the death three citizens in one family in Maccini Middle, last June that later was stated positive terjangkit bird flu.

The case of the bird flu was experienced by the family’s three members, H Abd Muin meatballs Pase Dg Bella in a beruntun manner last June.In the time nine days Andri died on June 15 with the sign of the high fever and shivered.By the doctor, the class student Ii SMAN 1 Makassar was stated was attacked by dengue fever (dB).One week afterwards, to be precise on June 22, his mother, Hj Sukria also experienced the similar sign through to finally died.Further the hose two days, on June 24 Akhira followed the mother and his older brother after could be treated three days in the hospital. The three of them were diagnosed was attacked DB. was acknowledged by Alimin, the older brother Andri and Akhira, on Friday September 8 yesterday in his house, if the death news three people that was loved by him this as a result of being infected by the bird flu virus (Avian influenza) or H5N1 he learned from the media.Narrated by the seventh child from 13 related that, that the mother and his youngest child’s brother were attacked by the high fever until dying after guarding Andri in the Barabaraya Community Health Centre. The “same mother of my youngest child’s brother (Hj Sukria and Akhira, red) indeed that was on duty at Andri while being treated in the Barabaraya Community Health Centre.”Just as Andri died, both of them also at once experienced the deviation and afterwards died also.Originally I was indeed suspicious if this the case of bird flu after the three of them died, he said considering around the community health centre of much livestock breeding and efforts of the piece chicken.Apart from casualties died, mentioned Alimin, several of his families could be also run off with to the hospital and were treated in space of the ferns isolation (for the case of bird flu) RS Dr Wahidin Sudirohusodo namely Mansyur (the brother-in-law), Umi Kalsum, and Knead (the cousin) as well as A Abd Muin (the father) that experienced the sign like casualties.

In the meantime, the sample inspection of saliva of several poultries around casualties’s house in the District Maccini the Mother, the Makassar Subdistrict, was acknowledged by the Secretary of the District, Drs Nasri Kadir, as the step in anticipation then. That was also justified by Nurlina, the official of the Marine Service, fisheries, and Livestock Breeding that true had the taking of the sample of several poultries as the step in anticipation related the existence of the case of bird flu that claimed fatalities in Maccini Middle. However the sample of the poultry that was checked that, still was negative AI.

So according to the last article-3 died and 3 additional family members went to the hospital with symptoms. Almost sounds like the Karo cluster. does not sound good at all.

Palu confusion
After comparing what’s been posted with my spreadsheet, I think these are three new patients; the people previously listed tested negative on 9/6/06, so I don’t think they’d be talking about them now.
The police officer probably ran away because people who’ve been identified as being positive have been ostracized.

At this time, the health service recorded had 18 patients suspect bird flu.
I’m guessing this means now, rather than in June—
“The patient’s time came, at that time the condition for the UGD room again full with the other patient.” While being suggested by us in front space and at that time us while straightening out the room of the isolation, said one of the officials. Every few the minute afterwards, the patient that beralamat in Street Setia Budi disappeared…”
They go back and forth between talking about the police officer and the child, though, so what do y’all think?

dbg – at 22:35

Ok, the confusion extends from Palu straight to my brain — the 18 people were in Makassar.

Influentia2 – at 22:42

I don’t know if I should post what I am thinking right now.

Michelle in OK – at 22:45

dbg, in the article at 13:42 posted by Mama about Palu, the reference to the preschooler has the date 8/31, and it states the housewife was prior to that. It was for these reasons that I hesitate to add additional suspects. But if most think they belong, we can add them.

Regarding Makassar, I can’t tell if the patients are now or in June. That’s why I simply noted them without counting them at this point.

Michelle in OK – at 22:49

Influentia2… we’re always interested in what you are thinking. I’m still concerned about the article above which states the entire village has an acute respiratory tract infection.

Influentia2 – at 22:56

This patient that fled is a police officer if I am reading this right? Am I?

Michelle in OK – at 23:00

Yes, Inluentia2, it is my understanding that the patient who fled from the hospital in the article at 13:42 is a police officer.

Influentia2 – at 23:19

Michelle in OK 22:49

First I am thinking someone misdiagnosed Akhira in June and then in the article I posted there are nine days from Andri’s death June 15th until June 24th Akhira went to the hospital for three days and died and in between on June 22cnd the mother died. Then I am thinking about back in August I believe one if not both Okki Jelina nd Megi Supatra were misdiagnosed with typhoid. One of them was even sent back to school, but I have to find that in my files to verify it. So 50 people misdiagnosed would be… I don’t even have a word for it. The article doesn’t say they gave them tamiflu but that it has been distributed to health centers. So officials are being very careful in that regard.

I keep thinking watch what they do not what they say. I don’t mean to sound paranoid but I keep thinking to watch what they do.

Now about that police officer did I read that right? If so I may be able to shed some light on that subject.

Influentia2 – at 23:29
Well I had this in my files, that is why I wondered if I read that article right. I believe this is the same place.

On Wednesday, August 30 2006 police joined in the Unggas Raid The HAMMER - the Rank Sector Police Palu West continued to help the Municipal Government merazia the poultry belonging to the citizen who was expected terjangkit the virus avian influenza (AI). In accordance with the data that was received this newspaper, already hundreds of poultries were pacified the Municipal Government from various districts in Palu West. GENEVA, Sept 8 (Reuters) - Exceprt:

One case was that of a 14-year-old Indonesian girl who died in June, whom national authorities announced on Thursday had been infected with bird flu. The case, in the South Sulawesi province, had taken a long time to identify because it was from blood samples taken during routine surveillance of people with mild influenza symptoms. The WHO said she had had contact with poultry near her home.

The June 2005 case was an eight-year-old girl from ‘’‘Banten province who died the following month and was part of a “family cluster” reported at the time, according to the WHO. Her father, who also died in July 2005, was Indonesia’s first laboratory-confirmed H5N1 positive human case. Her one-year-old baby sister also died at the time with similar symptoms but there was no word on Friday about the status of testing on her samples.’‘’ (Iwan)mine The other retrospectively confirmed case is a 45-year-old man from Central Java Province who developed symptoms in November 2005 following direct contact with diseased poultry, according to the WHO. Michelle at 21:00 and pugmom at 21:17, about the blood tests…

Everytime I read a news article that they are taking blood tests from suspect people, or even well people in the community, I scratch my head. Last year when there were human cases in other countries, it seemed that a deep throat or nasal swab was the optimum sample. And here is another clue that blood tests might not be so reliable…posted by Influentia2 at 00:50 -

The case, in the South Sulawesi province, had taken a long time to identify because it was from blood samples taken during routine surveillance of people with mild influenza symptoms.

This implies this virus was hard to find in her blood sample. I don’t know whether to say this or not. If blood tests are not very accurate for quick diagnosis, are they just taking blood samples to look like they are doing something? Well, maybe this comment will help get some response. Or this blood test question could be posed to Taubenberger or Nabarro.

Commonground – at 08:06

This was taken from a post by Anon_22 @ 00:55 today, in the Questions for Dr. Inglesby thread. This is all a strategy…. Clearly this is not happening, and that is why Nabarro is going to Indo next week:

Support a Coordinated Response by the International Community in Support of National Efforts
A series of actions will be necessary to contain an outbreak of a virus with pandemic potential, including rapid characterization of a potential outbreak, immediate and coordinated deployment of rapid reaction teams, deployment of international stocks of antiviral medications and other materiel, and institution of public health measures to limit spread. To be most effective, these measures require international preparation and coordination. The Federal Government will work with the World Health Organization (WHO), ‘’‘the Partnership, and through diplomatic contacts to strengthen these international mechanisms, and we will configure our own Departments and Agencies to deploy personnel and materiel in support of an international response upon the first reports of suspected outbreaks’‘’.
‘’‘We will also press for the establishment of internationally agreed-upon definitions and protocols in support of a containment strategy’‘’, including:
• A global epidemiologic standard for triggering an international containment response to a potential pandemic.
• ‘’‘The necessary actions that should be taken by nations in response to a suspected outbreak, including prompt reporting of the outbreak to the WHO Secretariat, and sharing of viral isolates and/or tissue samples’‘’.
• The establishment of an international rapid response capability, led by the WHO but with significant contributions of personnel and equipment by the international community, to investigate and respond to the suspected beginning of a pandemic.
• The establishment of national, regional, and international stockpiles of medical and non-medical countermeasures that are pre-positioned for rapid deployment.

pugmom – at 09:40

CG-08:06---yeah, sure looks good on paper. Too bad they are not implementing any of it. Now, there is another problem that Dr. Niman is alluding to and it is this: Indo only has to have confirmation by using 2 of its own laboratories. That means that they are no longer sending samples to outside labs (as Hong Kong, CDC, etc.) That means that there will be no speciments to undergo sequencing. That means, well, you all know what that means.

I just found an English language article about Akhira and her family. This sheds light on a great deal.

South Sulawesi

The Jakarta Post- …” The victim’s brother, Alimin, said his family had been shocked to learn the girl died of bird flu.

“It has really shaken us, to hear such news just as we were coming to terms with her death.”

Alimin said the family knew that bird flu in humans caused symptoms like the girl’s, including a high fever, chest pains and shortness of breath. However, her doctor had diagnosed dengue fever.

“But our suspicion caused us to free all our chickens and pet birds and destroy the coop amd cages immediately after her funeral….”

…” The girl’s mother and elder sister, both of whom exhibited bird flu symptoms, died before her. After her death, her father, two other siblings, an in-law and a cousin were in turns taken to the hospital with high fevers, but soon recovered.

Alidin said the family had suspected the three died of bird flu but could not confirm the matter since they were all diagnosed as suffering from dengue fever.

The head of the South Sulawesi Health Office, Andi Muhadir, said it was unwise to make assumptions but blood samples would be taken from the victim’s 11 family members and her closest neighbors…”

Mama, the description of chest pains made me recall an article posted by Commonground at 20:05 (regarding Hepatitis A diagnosis for 20 students.) I wonder if Hepatitis A is a firm diagnosis or if it is suspected because of the symptoms.

…initially he experienced the sign of the high fever for one week. Afterwards emerged the other sign namely nausea and pain in the part of the heart upstream.

MaMaat 11:05

Michelle in OK, here are the symptoms of Hep A

from wikipedia- ‘

Hepatitis A is an enterovirus transmitted by the orofecal route, such as contaminated food. It causes an acute form of hepatitis (inflammation of the liver) and does not have a chronic stage. The patient’s immune system makes antibodies against Hepatitis A that confer immunity against future infection. A vaccine is available that will prevent infection from hepatitis A for life….

Hepatitis A is a disease affecting the liver, and caused by the Hepatitis A virus (abbreviated HAV). Only 3 out of 4 people with hepatitis A have symptoms. Those symptoms may include:

    * Jaundice (showing up first as yellow eyes)
    * Dark urine
    * Nausea
    * Fever
    * Fatigue
    * Loss of appetite
    * Stomach ache
    * Vomiting

I guess the answer would depend on whether or not blood tests have been done to diagnose, unless the patients are jaundiced- which would certainly be a strong indication of hepatitis. Stomachache is a hep A symptom, but you’re right the symptoms from the article sound like chest pains. I wish we had more info…

- Palembang City, black-outs and water shortages
- Makassar City, black-outs and water shortages
- Parepare City/Regency (located 95 miles north of Makassar, a port town) There is little to no pasture there for cattle, the mung bean and corn crop failed, water shortages.
- Gowa Regency, wells dried up 2 months ago, water shortages.

CENTRAL SUMATRA

- Jambi Province (pop. 2,407,000), 332 of 958 villages currently affected, water shortages.

WEST JAVA

- Taskikmalaya Regency
- Ciamis Regency
- Bekasi Regency

EAST JAVA

- Malang Regency
- Ponorogo Regency
- Lamongan Regency Regency, 9 subdistricts currently affected, including Deket- picture here… www.metrotvnews.com/berita.asp?id=23612 - this used to be a fish pond, water shortages.

CENTRAL JAVA

- Semerang Regency
- Banyumas Regency, chili crop failed.
- Dompu Regency, rice crop failed
- Kebumeri and Karangmojo (cities or villages? unclear in reports) water shortages

WEST NUSA TENGGARA

- Bima Regency, water shortages, rice crop failed- picture here….. metrotvnews.com/berita.asp?id=23417 - used to be a rice field.

EAST NUSA TENGGARA

- Kupang(provincial capital, pop.450,000), water shortages, little or no pasture for cattle.

IMO it helps us to know about things like this. Poor sanitation and little or no access to clean drinking water will lead to a higher incidence of communicable disease in the affected areas. Crop failures and livestock deprivation will lead to malnourishment and impoverished communities, making them more susceptible to disease and likely less amenable to the idea of culling their chickens. What a horrible situation for these people to be in.

I’m going to have to officially drop out as a reporter on Sulawesi. It’s usually so late before I can start to work on this that someone’s already found the important stories, so I don’t feel like I’m leaving anyone in the lurch. One of the reasons my time is so limited is also a reason I got to practice social distancing yesterday — I went with a friend for her chemo infusion, and I’m three days into a cold. I’m sure I’m not contagious, but since a lot of those patients have *no* immune system, I wanted to be extra careful. It takes more conscious thought than I expected, but it’s certainly do-able. Anyway, kudos to all y’all, and I hope I’ll be able to be more active when my life calms down some.

I think someone on this thread or another expressed concern at the Indonesian chucking their dead chickens out in the river. I knew the EU did an interim study on a similar subject: infection from water contaminated with H5N1 bird poo. I have just found it again, here it is, look at the link entitled “Risk Assessment for human health H5N1 and drinking and bathing water June 2006″ towards the bottom of the page (it’s a .pdf file): H5N1 Bathing Water. Conclusion = bathing or drinking pooed water portends no risk to human health. I suppose this relates to the small viral load with bird poo in a big expanse of water. I don’t know what the viral load would be if you dumped H5N1 dead whole chickens, just how many birds would one need to dump per cubic meter of water to reach a critical viral load of the water, though, assuming still water such as pond, lake or laguna. Or whether the virus would survive long and ‘swim’ in a fast or slow-flowing river, or, for that matter, on the wavy shores of a sea or ocean… in salted water or not…

FrenchieGirlat 17:00

Or for that matter, if a H5N1 dead goose was to drop dead from the sky into your kiddies swimming pool…

Off to bed now, my mind is functioning too slow, my eyes are crossed and my fingers are knitting.

More on the Mud….I post this most for the unsanitary conditions… http://tinyurl.com/glsm4
If urgent, mud water channeled to Porong river and sea

Sidoarjo, East Java (ANTARA News) - If the situation is urgent, mud water which has flowed to almost all the ponds will be channeled to Porong river or the sea without water treatment but with standard quality, an official of PT Lapindo Brantas Inc. has said.

PT Lapindo Brantas spokesperson Yuniwati Teryana confirmed here Saturday that such a measure would be taken as the worst alternative in an effort to prevent mud water from further flowing to resettement areas which have not been affected by the mud.

In May 2006, gas leaked from a gas exploration rig operated by PT Lapindo Brantas and the gas leak was followed by outpouring of hot mud affeting nearby residence areas in Sidoarjo district, East Java province.

But, she said, if the construction of more ponds which can catch mud for the next several months is completed, the water treatment process runs well and a permit from the office of the state minister for the environment has been issued, the processed water can be soon channeled to Porong river and the sea.

We resort to channeling the mud water to Porong river and the sea if the situation is urgent, especially during rainy season because if the water in the ponds is not channelled soon, the ponds can no longer hold the mud water,” she said.

As many as 1,400 soldiers and supporting personnel from the Brawijaya (East Java) military command have been deployed to intensively work on more ponds in five villages in Sidoarjo with the deadline on October 11, 2006.

Spokesman for the Brawijaya military command Let.Col. AS Harahap earlier said as the construction of the ponds should be completed within 41 days from September 1 to October 11, 2006, the Brawijaya military command deployed personnel in a great number.

Nevertheless, the North Sulawesi Regional Government was still being waiting for results of the sample of the standard that was tested in the laboratory veteriner Bogor. Beforehand the test veteriner Baros stated the sample poultry in the Rumoong Village positive bird flu.

This post is offered as a translation of the personal struggles people in Indonesia are going through… they are sometimes not so different than our own.

Definitely by leaning himself on the hands pengasihan the Lord, worked and prayed was the key to the answer in facing various problems. Mama at 12:29… very interesting about the birds in Rumoong Village testing positive. I think this is the same village where most in the village suffered from an acute respiratory infection. I assume the “no entry” policy is only referring to birds.

This website has a picture of a chicken (alive and well) in Rumoong Bawah. I’m not sure if it’s the same place, but it looks rather deserted. Link to Harian Komentar

Commonground – at 16:43

Michelle in OK - at 14:56, I assumed the “no entry” was also pertaining to just birds.

Michelle in OK – at 17:01

Commonground, I manually typed in the caption under the chicken since it won’t allow you to copy it… this is the toggletext translation (from 9/06):

“The health command post in Rumoong Low, apparently the chicken still wandering, yesterday”

That must be one fast chicken.

Michelle in OK, ‘I think this is the same village where most in the village suffered from an acute respiratory infection.’

Do you remember when this was?

As to the other, I’m pretty sure the ‘no entry’ is referring only to birds. It sounds like they’re trying to stop people smuggling poultry into the area. It also sounds like they’ve culled some of the birds there, but as you pointed out, certainly not all:-)

Mama at 18:50… the respiratory illness in Rumoonga happened on Friday 9/08. The article is about 3/4 of the way up this thread at 20:47.

pugmom at 18:29… where do you think I should locate the 7 cases? I can’t determine the city, or even tell if it is in Central Sulawesi or East Java, since the article discusses both.

I don’t know Michelle—I think we should just put it in the margins for awhile (cases to be determined area). Too confusing. May hear more later.

Baolan Longitude: 120.8247222 Latitude: 0.9844444 The name of the hospital is Mokopido Tolitoli, so combined with the other place names, I’m fairly sure this is also the one in Central Sulawesi. If you look at the horizontal arm at the top of the island, Baolan (the subdistrict) is at the western end. Rumoong is at the eastern end (which is North Sulawesi). Between those two lies Gorontalo, which I think is still flu-less.

I posted that too quickly; this may be slightly less cryptic. ;-)

I didn’t find Tuweley with a quick search, but if you look at the horizontal arm at the top of the island, Baolan (the subdistrict) and Tolitoli are at the western end (it’s a city on the map, but Regencies are administratively equivalent to cities). Rumoong is at the eastern end (which is North Sulawesi). Between those two lies Gorontalo, which I think is still flu-less.

Good work dbg, except I think it means we may have more cases in Central Sulawesi than we knew about. What do you think? It also says they were undergoing “intensive” care, so they may be really ill. Folks, please check out this link. It is to an on-line newspaper in Manado, Sulawesi. The opening page will make you catch your breath if you have been a flu news searcher for some time. There are 5 consecutive articles about bird flu. I have only copied a small portion of the first article. Most of the content of the articles relate to tamiflu distribution to various centers and culling operations in various areas of Sulawesi. Rather than posting all of the chicken culling news I thought it best to just point to where the news is and you can toggletext and read it yourself. What is significant here is the tremendous amount of news coverage concerning bird flu. I have not seen this in any other Indo news site. This has these folks very spooked in my opinion. Here is the link to the toggletext translator:

Here is more from the first article on the Manado website. Sounds like there is at least one suspect from Rumoong Low, but they have not arrived at the hospital yet when this article was written.

<snip>

But till yesterday, did not yet have the patient because indeed in North Sulawesi, did not yet have the case for humankind. The bed that was provided by the RS side numbering 15 units, was not yet filled up. “Praised the Lord, until this in the room of the isolation that was prepared by us, did not yet have the positive patient bird flu.” But I continue to was in the room continued because of could hear information, there was one patient from Rumoong Low that was reconciled here because of being expected by bird flu. But until this this patient was not seen, said Dr MCP Wongkar SpPD when being contacted by the reporter Manado Post yesterday.

Okieman – at 23:03

I have read some more from the articles on the Manado site, and I don’t think they are necessarily spooked, but rather the local government is taking the issue very seriously and trying to be proactive rather than reactive. Good for them.

It seems that the illness in Rumoong has been diagnosed as seasonal flu, and the one patient who was hospitalized was determined to be negative for bird flu…

“Not that, after hearing the poultry in Rumoong positive was attacked by bird flu, the Health Service at once opened the health command post to check the villagers. “Until this already 131 patients who were examined by the Health Service and generally them just suffered flu and the cough as well as sneezed normally, did not yet have the indication terjangkit bird flu,” said Kadis the Minsel Health Dr Tommy Kawengian. This sounds like a fairly massive public education campaign. :)

From an article in the blue sidelines from the Manado link…

The socialisation and the edication of the bird flu danger became the bet for the collective awareness rise. By the capital, the government might not spend the expensive cost, and possibly North Sulawesi will carve the new history: the Area that succeeded in combatting the plague of bird flu only in an instant. For the aim, many for example. Must have been we could not mencontohi the control of hot mud in Sidoarjo that showed the powerlessness and government indolence.
