Forum: Fluwiki T-Shirt Stage 2

ricewiki – at 13:26

Fluwiki T-shirt thread part 2. The first thread is here.

Update:
-Currently there is a graphic established for the tees, but Melanie is still working on the rest of the mechanics.
-I’ve now created a page for placing tentative “orders” for fluwiki t-shirts here. It is not a real order page, but is just to keep us organized and to help once it comes time to actually ordering. It can then be used as an order aid.

You can go to the page, then edit in your info. I may transfer in some of the info myself, and if so, feel free to just go in and edit it if you change your mind or want more or less t-shirts, etc.

ricewiki – at 13:30

bump to get higher than old thread

ricewiki – at 13:33

Edit (or enter) your probable order here.

ricewiki – at 14:21

I think I have mostly everyone on there now who has tentatively ordered a tee. Check and edit if necessary. Or add your name there now if you wish to order one. (rather than just posting to this thread). the edit function is at the top of the page when you get there.

I’m-workin’-on-it – at 14:45

Thanks ricewiki, that’s a LOT of work & we all appreciate it!

BroncoBillat 14:56

Question---how will the shirts be distributed? Can we all go to ricewiki’s house and pick them up? ;-)

ricewiki – at 15:04

you guys are all welcome to SIP at my place too:)

ricewiki – at 15:42

ok the page is a bit more organized now. It’s under “Profiles” - TShirtOrderPage

Rock – at 16:05

Has anyone thought of using an online T-shirt service? My impression is that you can upload your design, create your own “shop” and then distribute the URL to people who want to purchase. You set the price, they do all the processing. check out http://www.spreadshirt.com/Start_a_Shop.115.0.html. I found this doing a quick search, but I am sure that their are other companies that do the same thing.

Watching in Texas – at 16:12

ricewiki - I do still want one XL and one L but I have no idea how to edit the order form in the correct manner, nor am I completely sure what a nameholder is;-(

WAT - I just figured out out to edit. When you go to the order sheet, click “edit” at the upper right corner. Then go to the bottom where your name is with the ? size, and you can edit it there.

I’m-workin’-on-it – at 19:30

Watching in Texas I’m further behind than you….at least YOU found the profiles section!

I’m-workin’-on-it – at 19:31

Ok,I’ve got it now….!

Watching in Texas – at 20:47

I’m-workin’-on-it - well bless your heart, always makes me feel better to know I’m not alone. I just haven’t been able to figure out how to get my name under the categories for extra large and large. I’m listed further down, so maybe that’s enough?? Oh ricewiki - is where I am okay? Does it mean I will still get a shirt if I’m listed at the bottom of the form? Signed, WIT-less When It Comes to Computers

ricewiki – at 22:17

Don’t worry about how the page looks right now…. I’m organizing it all…. the names at the bottom are just there temporarily until I find out your shirt size or you edit it yourself.

RuralMDat 22:57

I tried… 1 large, 1 xl… didn’t go through like that, and sorry I don’t really have the time to go through the editing process…

RuralMDat 22:58

Oops, I might have asked for 1 large, 1 medium… whichever! Medium would likely be better.

Posie – at 01:55

i’d been considering making one of these for myself before reading this thread. was going to have it printed-up to read simply: “Ask Me About Avian (Flu?)”

of course the fluwiki web-site address printed on it would be helpful/essential.

i don’t think it should be too scary or too silly as people might be less-inclined to want to think further on the subject either way.

otherwise i might include something mildly insulting, like, “Don’t be a sheeple! Ask me about Avian.”

Great ideas, all.

Swann – at 02:44

Rice! You will let us know when we have a chance to modify this list, right? After I see the design, colors, price, I may want several more. Thanks!

ricewiki – at 13:14

yes…. I imagine that updates about the t-shirts will happen on this thread, and of course we’ll be able to see one (I imagine) before ordering… feel free to update your “order” (since it’s not official yet) on the order page listed above at any time.

JV – at 13:46

ricewiki -

Is there a price set yet for the t-shirts? If so, I have missed it.

ricewiki – at 14:35

no price set yet….

ricewiki – at 14:36

I’m just hoping to help organize the “demand” side:)
I know nothing about the “supply” side - Melanie’s doing all that.

BroncoBillat 17:14

RW---how’d you figure my shirt size? Is it my booming voice??? ;-)

2beans – at 18:58

I’d like two extra large. How do I order? Do I punch edit? Where to put info?

ricewiki – at 21:16

2beans

yes, click on “edit” at top of page; just be sure to only change your one line and not erase others!

BB

You said your size on the previous t-shirt thread somewhere:) I just copied that….

BroncoBillat 21:51

ricewiki – at 21:16 — Oh yeah!! :-) I remember now….thanks. I was startin’ to think you were psychic or somethin’!!

Melanie – at 21:54

Wikians,

I’ve been investigating the ways to do this: if I can find a websource I’m comfortable with, I can get the design to them and you order through them. I’m still learning about this. Cafe Press is out of the question, shoddy goods. The other option is to find a local specialty printer, have them printed locally and pay The UPS Store to handle the mailing, which gives me a better handle on quality control, but then I have to handle the money and that’s nasty.

Do any of you have experience with this stuff?

chicken little in FL – at 22:45

Ricewiki and Melanie - kudos to you for taking on such a HUGE task.

Don’t have any info regarding on line ordering…but a thought if you don’t want the burden of having to deal with printing the shirts yourself (after all - maybe you still have prepping to do - hehe).

If the design is “free” maybe it could be posted on the site for use. Most craft stores sell the materials to create your own iron on transfer. Then everyone could find the right size shirt in a color they love and noone will be dissapointed that it doesn’t fit right or match their eyes. I went to a 50th Birthday party were everyone was given a shirt - they actually came out really good.

ricewiki – at 22:46

Melanie,

I do not really. But the websource sounds like it might be better if it saves $ on both sides for shipping etc. Plus it would save you time. We just need to get a good recommendation on a websource.

Has anyone here ordered any t-shirts online that were good quality? Where did you order them from?

help melanie find a websource – at 22:47

Idea: how about we all start searching online for t-shirt suppliers?
Then we can collectively evaluate the options here, and hopefully save Melanie time too.

chicken little in FL – at 22:48

see Rock 16:05 - 13 June

chicken little in FL – at 22:52

ricewiki - is it too late to add my name to the order list? It said under construction at the top and wouldn’t let me edit anything. I would like 3 in the following sizes XL-1 L-2

Melanie – at 22:55

It’s like the reveres always tell me, ask the hivemind and the info comes pouring in. Include your evaluations of the site/business to save me even more time. The ones you actually have experience with will rate the highest in my eyes.

ricewiki – at 22:56

spreadshirt.com looks pretty good…… it would even allow us to have different varieties of t-shirts and colours, all with the same graphic. Heck, it would even allow all of us to each make our own bird flu shirts and sell them. Price seems a reasonable start - 14.90 for a tee, plus whatever markup you want. the account/store is free to open and maintain.

MaMaat 22:58

www.customink.com looks promising. They offer quick quotes on their site, customer ratings and quite a range of product choices.

about T shirt design:

T-shirt mask could help in bird flu pandemic

“A cotton T-shirt “was boiled for 10 minutes and air-dried to maximise shrinkage and sterilise the material in a manner available in developing countries,” they wrote. They cut it into nine pieces and fashioned a mask that had several layers of cotton over the nose and mouth and tied behind the head. Such a mask is a poor defence against influenza, except perhaps when used by trained health care workers, Dato said in a telephone interview.

“If it’s really needed, you actually have the mask on and you are next to somebody who has influenza, then that mask is catching influenza droplets. So then when you are done with it, it is really contaminated,” she said. ….

ricewiki – at 00:59

Thanks for the info, MaMa and KimT!

KimT, does artapart deliver internationally?

It looks as though spreadshirt delivers to Europe, too… maybe it is our best bet, then? Unless we find other sources that can also deliver to Europe.

The only thing that really sucks is all the customs fees. These can be horrendous coming into Canada. I wonder if it wouldn’t be a better idea for the graphic artist to somehow just copyright his/her design, then Melanie uploads the file here, and we can each upload the file to the t-shirt service of our choice.

That way, we can use a service in our own country and avoid customs charges. And our shirts would all look the same, the same fluwiki brand look. I think that’s important.

Hmm. Melanie (and others), you might want to consider what could happen if these t-shirts really took off like a fad - like those silly plastic bracelets after lance armstrong…. soon everyone had their own kind. This wouldn’t be that big, but it might be neat to have a central store that everyone could download them from…. so in that sense, maybe a central (single) store is good.

ricewiki – at 01:02

customink seems to have minimum order requirements of 6 shirts. That’s too much for individual orders.

ricewiki – at 01:03

spreadshirt has no minimum orders.

ricewiki – at 01:05

spreadshirt has free delivery in US and Canada if the order is $169 or more. We could spread out the orderers around the country, order in semi-bulk like this, then resell. Maybe that’s too complicated?

ricewiki – at 01:08

spreadshirt delivery costs, if you are ordering, say, 2 t-shirts only, are 4.99 in the US, and 6.99 in Canada. That’s definitely cheaper than buying $169 worth to get free delivery. Not bad. Worth it to be part of a great public service campaign, IMHO!

MaMaat 01:08

That could work. Have one or two contacts in each country to collect orders/payment and disperse product?

A heck of alot less work for Melanie that way.

ricewiki – at 01:10

How about this: does anyone have any objections to spreadshirt that they can think of, after reading through the site?

advantages:

MaMaat 01:12

9.99–10.99 for other international destinations + customs fees and applicable taxes

ricewiki – at 01:12
ricewiki – at 01:14

MaMa, as I understand it, they print on request, so, there’s no middleman necessary. A single individual can order a single t-shirt and they’ll print and deliver it. Melanie (or anyone) wouldn’t have to handle anything at all (except collecting the profits, however that works on the backend).

ricewiki – at 01:15

OK, I am really impressed that spreadshirt has partner sites in the local languages…. so far it has my vote!

any other good t-shirt sources like these around? – at 01:18

Melanie, this could work really well, since you wouldn’t have any upfront costs (or any costs, actually) at all. Entirely borne by the buyer. One option might be to take no profit at all, and let these go as free public service. That way the end-cost for the buyer is less and more appealing after delivery, customs, etc.

Or, include a profit margin and donate to the wiki… up to you of course. Just thinking out loud.

MaMaat 01:20

Rock – at 11:58

Hi all, I started the discussion about online fullfillment at 16:05 June 13 so I thought I would weigh in.

As full disclosure, I have no affilliation to any e-commerce site, let alone www.spreadshirt.com. It was the first one that I found that you could create your own store so that the admin burden is off fluwikie. Thank you ricewiki for finding the affilliates in france, germany and uk. For completeness, I found another website similar to spreadshirt.com

http://www.printmojo.com/

However, I didn’t find affiliates in other countries. Here is an example of a printmojo store The one problem here is that you must pre-buy inventory to stock your store, then they handle the rest.

I vote for spreadshirt since there is no upfront cost and they have worldwide affilliates.

Rock – at 12:05

Oh, one more thing. Instead of having one design, we could put up the best 2 or 3 designs and have the wikians pick/vote the best design they want.

Another design: How about a T-shirt with instructions on how to create a t-shirt mask. It could have dashed lines like a dress pattern, and of course the fluwikie logo and website. Unfortunately, I am only an idea person and not a graphic artist, so this is as far as I can take the concept. Cheers everyone.

who else votes for spreadshirt.com? – at 13:51

can we get a bit more input from others on the use of spreadshirt.com as the supplier of our t-shirts?
is there anything we DON’T like about it in comparison to other t-shirt supplier sites?

this is a special online service that prints t-shirts on demand according to the file that has been uploaded. There is no minimum order; they deliver internationally, and their prices seem reasonable. They take credit cards, cheques and money-order. we would even be able to choose which colour/type shirt we each wanted.

anything else we’re overlooking?

I’m-workin’-on-it – at 14:26

Looks perfect to me

Jane – at 14:40

The bird flu t-shirts I saw on Spreadshirt cost $20. “H5N1 Catch the fever” and “Bird flu” with a picture of a yellow bird with a tissue and a dripping beak.

Edna Mode – at 15:06

I am late to this thread, but from what I gather, you guys haven’t finalized the design have you? I saw a great headline this a.m. that immediately put me in mind of this t-shirt project: “Prudence not panic.” I’m assuming the goal of the t-shirts is to invite opportunities to educate others. Not sure if you’ve worked out a slogan yet, but I think this is the essence of what Flu Wiki is about. Just my $0.02.

ricewiki – at 16:14

Yes Edna - you’re right.

Jane, rest assured those silly designs are not ours nor the ones we are talking about!

Melanie has the design and no one has seen it here yet. It will get posted to whichever online service we choose as the best for our needs, then we will all be able to individually download/order the shirts we want.

ricewiki – at 16:18

Rock

After such long and extensive discussion on the previous t-shirt thread about kinds of designs and slogans and all sorts of other possibilities, I think it is prudent at this point that we trust Melanie’s judgment and go with the design her graphic designer has come up with (which includes all of our input anyway). After all, it’s just going to be an educational resource. At the end of the day, you can always come up with your own design and slogan and make your own t-shirt on one of those sites anyway. At least, this is how I see it.

A couple of suggestions. 1) why don’t you try one of the sites listed above? You could ask a few select volunteers to order T-shirts and get their feedback. If it “works” then open it up to the general Wiki population. 2) add a buck to the cost of the shirts which would go towards supporting Flu Wiki. This assumes that there is not already a PenPal setup in place.

My 2 cents. I will volunteer to buy a shirt from a few sites. Shop till you drop. ;-)

Too Much Anxiety Girl – at 10:50

Hi,

My son created a shirt using Clip Art and Word Art, then placed these on a model shirt online to check placement and sizing of the graphics, and selected the shirt color for the background.

I don’t exactly remember the price or the shipping time, but it exceeded my expectations. It’s been through the regular wash several times with good success.

anything else we’re overlooking?

spreadshirt looks like an easy and efficient way to go with lots of options. but most of their brands — Fruit of the Loom, Hanes and Stedman (both owned by Sara Lee), Gildan, Jerzees — are companies that source their products from factories where workers’ rights and labor laws are regularly violated and freedom to organize/unions are unlikely to exist.

some alternatives might be:

Justice Clothing
their website isn’t opening for me right now, but it was working fine the other night.
their FAQ on wholesale orders is here:
Do you do wholesale? Silk screening? Embroidery?- updated
Yes! We offer large discounts on bulk orders- especially to not-for-profit organizations. We also work with several union screening and embroidery shops to offer a wide array of options for organizations. We don’t, by the way, up-charge these shops prices - we charge simply what they do as a way to make it easier for people to support union shops. Please contact us if you need bulk pricing.

COMAMNUVI is the Nueva Vida Women’s Sewing Co-op in Nicaragua
to order directly from the factory, there is a minimum order requirement of 300 shirts. their info on in-factory screenprinting before the increase in minimum order was $1/shirt for design of up to 3 colors; $15 design set-up fee.

one of their distributors in the U.S. is North Country Fair Trade, and the prices for short-sleeve Ts sizes s-xxl are:
white, $3.29 ea; colors (blue, red, gray, black), $3.89; organic (natural color), $4.89.
maybe they can work out a screenprinting deal for an order of < 300 shirts. i’m happy to check.

The Just Garments union factory in El Salvador has an online distributor that sells plain white Ts for $5.25, sizes xs-xxl. there is information on making a wholesale order here.

see also the Fair Trade Federation

i have ordered from No Sweat and Justice Clothing and was satisfied with both of them, and i also volunteer to try out some other Ts.

Is this on hold right now - or am I missing a new thread - I did a search but didn’t see anything else?

status: everyone has voted for spreadshirt.com, but dimux brought up the point about their shirts coming from sweatshops etc. So, we need to go back to the drawing board and evaluate spreadshirt against the choices dimux has presented here.

any helpers?:) - we want ability to deliver worldwide, and ability to order a single shirt-order.

dimux – at 08:29 Can you up-load the design and set up a store at no cost and no minimum upfront order, have them take payments and have the shirts sent any where globally at a resonable cost?

the companies i mentioned above are regular online retailers that also provide wholesale services. they do not have the set-up-your-own-store-online option like some of the sites people have been mentioniong.

i will check into your questions about minimum order #, payment (did you mean individual orders as opposed to a bulk pruchase?), and international shipping charges with the companies that offer the most options on Wednesday, after the holiday.

for those who have already requested t-shirts, who will need international shipping, and to what countries?

dimux – at 03:48

chicken little in FL – at 22:52 I would like 3 in the following sizes XL-1 L-2

chicken little, i added your requests while adding my own. hope that is okay with you.

dimux – at 04:46

Melanie:

here are some updated tallies; maybe they’ll be useful in deciding between printing locally and using a websource if you haven’t already done so:

there are now 92 shirts requested, plus 8 more without specified sizes, for a total of 100 (up from 83). for shipping purposes, there are actually only 49 different people’s names on the list.

a question: is there any fundraising element to the shirts? on March 26, when the t-shirt discussion was first starting out, DemFromCT – at 13:48 said, we are interested in eventually taking the flu wiki non-profit. We thought we might raise some money for the site after that’s done with tee shirts, and deferred the idea..
i ask because some people have mentioned making their own shirts. chicken little in FL – at 22:45 said, If the design is “free” maybe it could be posted on the site for use. Most craft stores sell the materials to create your own iron on transfer. Then everyone could find the right size shirt in a color they love..
is this a possibility? i like the idea of printing the final graphic and putting it on a T-shirt myself (less work for you), but i would be willing to make a donation to the wiki if the shirts are also meant to be a kind of fundraiser.

Yes, So Melanie wouldn’t have to order 300 shirts to get a good deal and then sell them from the wiki, worry about s&h and hope she breaks even eventually.

thanks!

ricewiki – at 00:57

dimux, thanks for updating the t-shirt tallies…

yes, to be able for an individual to order ONE t-shirt online - this would be the ideal.

As for internaitonal orders: we have people here in UK, Amsterdam, France, Germany, Australia/NZ and Malaysia who are regular visitors. We checked various sites out but spreadshirt was the only one that seemed it could best handle (and relatively cheaply) international ordering. I don’t like the idea of sweat shops if it means people being treated poorly, but it is a complicated issue and not one to dismiss. I am not personally above ordering something made in thailand or elsewhere since I cannot verify the quality of the labour enivornment and worker satisfaction. Maybe I am still under-informed, but I still vote for spreadshirt for our purposes (which could very well save many lives at the end of the day, thus doing just as much good as buying from a “safe-shop”). [Just my two cents, though. Not trying to start something with it.:)]

KimTat 01:05

I’d like to get started ordering a couple of shirts. Rice do you know how soon everything can get up and running?

ricewiki – at 01:39

KimT,

My understanding is that Melanie is going to upload the design onto the t-shirt site once she/we all agree on the best site service to use. On June 21 (above), Melanie said “This sounds good to me. Let me ask pogge what we have to do to upload the wiki logo onto the wiki.”

So… I guess it will be up on the wiki, then we can each upload it to whichever t-shirt site we want….? Maybe this is better in the long run anyway. That way we can pick our own sites. I’ll probably go with spreadshirt.

Sorry folks, I have been offline for a bit. Can someone summarize the plan? It sounds like the design will be available to all who want to sell them and that the FW will not be involved. True?

If so, when will there be a way to make contributions to the site? If you go the non-profit route make sure that people understand that donations under $249 (US - no idea of the ramifications for non-US contributions) do not require a return receipt. If possible you may want to limit contributions to under that amount just to avoid the hassle. If someone wants to make a larger contribution you could set up a seperate mechanism (perhaps using snail-mail). I expect that most contributions will be smaller so this should not be a problem.

I am not an accountant so do not take the above as tax gospel. I am simply a US taxpayer who has been caught in the arcane rules of the IRS.
