See Thread #2 for graphics of the card in progress…
Thanks BB. It is good to have the sheets changed. :)
While we are waiting for our card to be tweaked and downloaded in a few days, let’s brainstorm for ideas on ways to pass on the ribbons and cards.
GreenMom at 16:00 (Thread 1) shared these ideas: “Heres some places I would leave them-I go to Docs office once a week for allergy shot-I’d leave a big handful of them there, Teacher’s lounges at all the local schools, see if banks would let you leave them at the counters. Gas stations, convience stores, Mom and Pop stores-many of those places have little things by the cash register like, a jar for donations for Katrina Victims, or raising donations for local causes. Community bulletin boards at grocery stores, thrift stores etc. You could even put them under wiper blades of cars at parking lots”
Please add some more ideas.
Some businesses have places where they let customers who have business cards place a few of their own so that other customers can also patronize thos businesses. That might be an excellent place to leave a few.
Good idea. Poppy. Here are a few more to add: PTA meetings, town supervisors, city mayors, village offices. Mail card to congressmen, state legislators, newspaper editors, magazines, to reporters that we know are good (like Heken Branswell),TV/cable talkshow hosts, news shows, news analysis shows, local community papers. Large grocery stores(talk with manager to see if he would be willing to set up an area to display prep. supplies and a table to leave your card with ribbons on re National Preparedness month). Also sporting events, craft fairs garage sales and any community events in your area. If you link to the homeland security site, there is a calendar of events for each site for National Preparedness month. You can add yours to the calender which will indicate to the PTB how many people are getting involved. Link: http://www.ready.gov/america/npm/index.htm
Phew, lots of opportunities here! Please add more.
Enlist the help of your local GirlScout and BoyScout troop.
They can get community service credit, and they can cover a lot of ground.
I saw a comment on another thread in which a poster had discussed this ribbon campaign with a doctor she knows. She said he told her this campaign might “scare folks to death” or “make me look like a nutjob”. I think we should, perhaps, discuss ways to respond when our friends, professionals, etc make these responses to us. I bet some of you are worried about being considered a ‘nutjob’.
The good thing about this project is that we can contribute ANONOMOUSLY if this issue concerns you. Not everyone is comfortable with face to face contact. Here our a few suggestions for things you can do to help:
Many of us will add the personal touch to this effort, but we do realize that not everyone is in a position to do so.
Please add more ideas on how to address this issue. Thanks!
After they approach you and ask about the ribbon or card you are wearing, ask first what they have heard and what they think. Really listen. Then just respond to what they say. After that ask them if they have any questions and answer them or refer them to the source of information for them to check out. Don’t be confrontational or sensational, just show your concern that people should find out more about this potential risk to their families. Tell them that you do this because you really care about people and just want to help. That is my coffee hour strategy anyway.
That is great advice, Dude! You have a way with words and they make great sense, : )
You could pin a small plastic container of cards at bus and train stops. Also leave them in your work cafeteria or on community noticeboards in teh workplace.
I read a comment on the site a few days ago that I felt gave a good ‘non-threatening’ perspective on prepping. It was something like
Others may find this a useful type of statement to get people thinking about prepping - at least 2 weeks is better than nothing and it gives them a better understanding of why it is necessary to do the prepping.
Thanks , AnnieB, that is a very non-threatening way to get the message across. We will all have to be prepared with ways to handle questions. It is so much better to lead folks to a conclusion rather then tell them what to do and your statement makes this possible.
Here is what I just did. Since I drive people around who work out in the elements and live in an area that can be affected by hurricanes I decided to give them a general preparedness message. I got some small tissue packs, some gel hand cleaner, and some cough drops. I put these in a zip baggie with the following links printed on a mailing label stuck to the baggie. I chose to softpedal things just a bit by leaving fluwiki off of the label but the message about pandemic flu is still in there. It opens up the possibility for discussing it with these guys at least. The reminder about annual flu shots is timely message that I hope will help keep all of us well and hopefully the tissues and gel cleaner will serve as a good reminder about how colds and flu are spread.

Since I wanted to go ahead and get some of the cards printed on my home printer, I set up a page on Word that has the Red Ribbon/Message side, and then a corresponding “back page” listing websites to check out. I set it up so that the back page drops right into the space for the corresponding front page (hence it becomes a two-sided business card). If anyone wants a copy for their personal use, please let me know and I’ll post it somewhere.
I also punched a hole in the corner of each card, and connected the ribbon to the card using a small pin that I glued to the back of the ribbon.
Dude, How are things coming coming on the download? : )
Dude-
I’m mostly just bumping this because apparently you are wanted. But I wanted to say I took you advice when a friend came by — I was trying to get him to watch my kids for me while I went to a pandemic flu conference; and when I told him what it was for, he looked at me like I was a loon. He said he wasn’t worried about a pandemic, if it came about he’d just head to the hills, run very far away.
So I asked him what he knew about it, and he said, well, he believed he’d hear that there would be no vaccine for about 9 months. So I looked at him and asked, “Where would you run to? With your wife and 2 babies?” And just left it at that — for now.
Average Concerned Mom
Hi, everyone
I just ‘spoke’ with Dude. He has been having serious computer problems and is a bit backed up right now trying to get caught up. He hasn’t forgotten us and will still help complete the ‘business card’ for the ribbon campaign as soon as he is able to. :) Thanks Dude!

Poppy – at 21:44, Good stuff!
You can change the text for Oct_ is Pandemic Awareness Week, and use it next month, too!
(I didn’t know there was a NNOKR…)

The files for the pandemicawarenessbusinesscard-front and pandemicawarenessbusinesscard-back are now on the FTP site. Our graphic designer has had a go at the ideas and templates provided by the members of this forum…she has come up with the front/back format seen on the site. Download them to take a look. Let me know if this design is OK for everyone. There is also an explanation of how to print the cards - called cardexplanation. It is in word format. The card files front and back are PDF. I printed some out and I like them….of course I am bias…grin.
How do you print PDF files two sided at Kinkos ?
oh, and where is the ftp site ?
ftp://wwwdotsingtomeohmusedotcom User wikimember pass wiki123
Read the cardexplanation file. Bring the front & back files to them and they can figure it out. It is a simple pdf file in a 2cards X 5cards format.
When I click on the above link I get a “page can not be displayed” message. Is this happening to anyone else?
You can’t use that link directly, ST. Try ftp://ftp.singtomeohmuse.com and then provide “wikimember” and “wiki123″ when prompted for user and password.
I was able to get to the site here:
ftp://www.singtomeohmuse.com member:wikimember password: wiki123
DUDE: Your cards are terrific! Thankyou from all of us!
When I try to download it, it says.
Cannot save file, file does not exist.
This happens for both of the pandemicawareness pdf files.
Same error when I just try to open them.
The word file downloads fine.
I’m using Firefox.
It works on my side, also using Firefox. Strange that doc works and pdfs don’t - tried another smallish file?
btw, using linux from here - someone suggested it might be windows (re long name files).
I’m on Win 2K and Firefox and I don’t seem to be having any problem.
Please read above to download
on my computer (windows xp and Internet Explorer I can only get to the site by typing in: ftp://www.singtomeohmuse.com The links are not working for me.
Member name: wiki member password: wiki123
card is done at 14:46 No space in the user name wikimember - just FYI…you may have not meant that. You can open the window with the wiki files and just drag and drop to another folder. I can only say that the permissions are identical for all files on the site. Let me know about the reference to the main wiki or the discussion forums. We can have whatever you want.
btw, the cards (side B) have an URL which is wrongly formatted, with a slash after the www.
Is there a way to put the card up on this thread so that those of us who are unable to access it can see it? None of the above suggestions has worked for me. I have been able, by typing in, to get to a page with a flower on it that says ‘in the works’. But that is it.
Thanks, Dude. I’m sure we will figure this out. I appreciate everything you are doing.
I have WindowsXP.
crfullmoon - Thanks. I probably will make the change for October. I also have one of the other drivers on board with the idea. She liked it because both of us want to stay healthy this flu season. Pan flu or not we just can’t afford to be sick.
I found out about the NNOKR while helping a young man with his Eagle Scout project last fall. He collected school supplies and sent them to the first NOLA public school to open after Katrina. The NNOKR is a good idea, especially for young children or anyone with a medical condition. IMHO It ought to be a standard prep for anyone in an area prone to natural disasters.
i will upload the pics of the cards in a few minutes.
pandemicflu.gov has a slash too many (after www).
Could we perhaps add a non-US expert? I know and trust those two are representative, but …
Thanks, Dem! I could hardly wait to see it.
Dude, please tell your graphic designer how much we appreciate what she has done. Give that woman a raise! It’s really beautiful.
I think I’ll just go to the print shop and have them download it there. That should work.
We are lucky to have you at Flu Wiki, Dude. Thank you.
Thank you nightowl, but I am only a small part of the energy here. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts. I have noted the typo around the government site and will change the reference for the main wiki site. She does do nice work. I wish she would come on to this site, but she said she wants to keep her distance from this topic. She is prepped for three to six months but wants to enjoy the time she has in the way that she can. An artistic person who loves life and wants to live it. I can respect that. Grin, I tell her more than she wants to know anyway. I know also that I have her respect and confidence in my judgement. I will tell her about the changes on Monday. Anyone else want/need to change anything? - so we can put this puppy to bed.
Dude, Please give her our most sincere thanks. She is truly a great lady to have given of her own time to help get this done. : )
Lugon, I don’t think we can fit another quote on the card. You do bring up a good point.
I think all of our international posters can adapt this card to reflect their country. I agree that the U.S. quotes won’t fit everyone just as the english P and A on the ribbon will have to be adapted to reflect a local language. I hope people get creative with this project. I hope many will keep the link to fluwiki on the card as well.
Still can’t download it.
Frustrating the heck out of me because I need to get these printed for an EMSA meeting next week.
ftp://wikimember:wiki123@singtomeohmuse.com/ Bird at 1:48 try the link above.
ST - extremely right, you are. Hadn’t noticed initials will have to be translated too!
Just an international quote to replace Leavitt’s would do, I think. Maybe Dr Nabarro has said something about being worried about food etc, I think.
Thanks Dude,
That seemed to work.
Wasn’t there some discussion about the fluwikie link being just www.fluwikie.com
??
I had a “wow” moment today while doing my Mama Lama service (our fond name for pack, haul/hold, drive). A magnetic PA ribbon for the car, complete with Pandemic Awareness bumper sticker underneath it and a big letters fluwikiedotcom bumper sticker next to that one.
I was shopping for supplies to do this, and both at Michael’s, a craft supplies store, and at an artists’ supply store was told that inks used to stamp would bleed into a satin ribbon and paint wouldn’t stick. So I bought an acrylic metallic gold finepoint marker and won’t use the antique alphabet stamps I bought unless someone can tell me what will work. And why is it so hard to find half-inch red ribbon? (Can’t be our project, can it?) Don’t have any yet, just 1/4 inch so far. What kind of glue will hold the loop without coming through? Or are you all using a silk straight pin? Thanks.
Hi all. The corrections for the business card back have been made and uploaded. Let me know if anyone needs anything else.
Bird: Yes, The correction was made.
Dude, it looks great. Thank you!
Nightowl, I love your magnet, bumper sticker ideas. Great way to get attention on our cars! You are so creative. : )
ST
Everyone, please see Dude’s link at 2:12 for an easy way to access his site.
Nightowl, you might look at www.cafepress.com. I’ve never used them, so I can’t speak to the sticker quality, but I know you can upload a design and then get as few or as many bumper stickers as you want. (I don’t know if they do any kinds of magnets or not.)
Thanks, Lauralou, I’ll check it out. Thanks, ST, too.
Nightowl
the “car magnet” version:
I emailed my letter to Dr. Osterholm and a link to the card. I will let you know if I hear back. ST
putting the pic on a cafepress 2.25″ magnet
The above is just playing with the suggestions and possibilities. For those of us who are not ‘crafty’, Photoshop is a big help. ;-)
I’d like a big magentic PA ribbon to put on all of the firetrucks.
:-)
Back in the days, we made our own buttons. It came as a kit, with blanks, a press, and some shinny hard material to cover the button in. We could put pictures, text, etc. and I still have one of the buttons from 1969 on my desk. Grin. I wonder what is out there now….I will look.
Now this is the first site I found. There are many others. Seems doable with the proper image.
Name your image. Photoshop is at the ready. Al I need are dimensions and I can make a TIFF file to look really good for buttons. I’ll use the one Dem had as a test template and pop it back over to the LFCP4 thread to have it reviewed. I’ll drop a Photoshop PSD version as well for editing.
Hmm. Why not just fold the printed ribbon and use a tie tack to put it together and to hold it to your shirt etc.
Or you can use this 3D image to make the buttons look a little more catchy:
Or not. Back to the sandbox, it should be 350 pixels wide.
Now, try this again:
it’s fluwikie.com
This is great! Because magnets are small, I’d lose the shadowing.
Looks good guys!
The design proof for these magnets could also be made into pins to wear. It is much easier to weat the pin everyday than keep transferring a piece of paper with a ribbon in it.
yes, easier to wear the pin everyday
Great ideas! Keep them coming. TRay, I love your graphic for the pin.
TRay, would you be willing to post a version of the button with the same links as the cards? (Replace the ready.gov link with the CIDRP link listed on the card?) also maybe delete the shadows?
Thanks!
that cidrap link is loooong!!!
the botton would look like:
or this:
Hmm…could we just use the name cidrap and then post the tiny url for it?
Dude, is that possible? or are you joking? (You know me and computers, LOL)
Dem, thanks for you help, they look great! : )
No one will remember a tiny url (or CIDRAP) if they see someone wearing the button. Suggestions and alternatives welcome.
Also, we need a page and an explanation of the red ribbon campaign off the PFAW page.
I need a pic of the red ribbon with just the P and the A.
got it!
