Wildfowl hunter, son-in-law suspected bird flu cases in Uttaradit UTTARADIT, July 23 (TNA) - A hunter in a rural area of Thailand’s northern Uttaradit province and a man who feasted on wildfowl with him are in hospital here, suspected of having contracted bird flu.

Medical authorities at Uttaradit Provincial Hospital admiited both men for tests as the two are suspected of having contracted avian influenza.

Provincial Chief Medical Officer Dr. Boonriang Chuchaisaengrat said further test results from a medical science laboratory in Phitsanulok by Monday will be able to establish whether a 67-year-old hunter and his 35-year old son-in-law from Ruamjit subdistrict of Thapla district contracted bird flu or not.

One bird flu is found in the US, it will be interesting to see what recommendations are given to duck hunters.

In looking back over yesterday’s (Fridays) news -July 21st- I saw that ‘cub – at 22:22′ in the news thread had already posted the partial quote from the virologist Prof.Thongcharoen.

(ie. see my post ‘23 July 00:01 - URGENT-If new to this forum-please read – at 00:01)

What an amazingly courageous & determined man to speak out so consistently. He must be absolutely furious, at his wit’s end. Anyway, the world needs more like him. Tho I have experienced quite a few in this forum!

South-America El Salvador 19/07/2006

Salvadoran health authorities decreed a yellow alert Tuesday due to a possible new dengue outbreak, and confirmed 289 cases of infection have been reported so far. The Health Ministry said it is following the evolution of the disease, and the 227 cases reported last week, now up to 289 in the last seven days, brought about the decision to decree a yellow alert to counteract a possible epidemic, in a disease that in its hemorrhagic phase can be fatal. Local authorities in various zones have warned of the lack of governmental concern. However, according to released information, the Executive has begun implementing measures to confront the spread of the disease. The Health Ministry has called on the population to go to the hospitals immediately in case of any suspected infection, including high fever, spots on the skin or flu symptoms.

Not sure but think Monotreme means “ONCE bird flu is found…”

DemFromCTat 10:42

Bird flu is a vast term, meaning H1 through H16… in birds. H5N1 mwans H5N1, though there might be low path forms. Hunters who have serologic evidence of H11 are what the story refers to and n=3.

And you wonder why the press has trouble with this?

Monotreme – at 11:18

Sorry TreasureIslandGal, okcinder is correct, I meant once bird flu is found…

I can see how my typo could be alarming.

Drugmaker urges corporate caches of Tamiflu

Swiss drugmaker Hoffmann-La Roche has launched a campaign urging businesses to stockpile its antiviral pill Tamiflu, despite a backlog of orders from world governments building emergency caches for the public as a hedge against a deadly flu pandemic.

Lone Bird flu survivor goes home after 7 relatives die from The Jakarta Post

Jones Ginting can’t remember much of his battle with bird flu, and it’s probably for the best.

For the first two weeks, he slipped in and out ofconsciousness at a hospital. His skin stuck to the sweaty sheets as his fever raged up to 39.5 C (103.1 F). He slept with arms stiff as pipes. When he did come to, he was delirious, angry even, fighting nurses who tried to give him the antiviral drugTamiflu. Always struggling to breathe…[more]

Article posted at 11:38 is Jones Ginting’s account of what it is like to have BF. Does not sound like a lot of fun…

Is it known which paracites accounted for the abscesses in Ginting’s brains? Or were they after all viral inclusions?

Three more people with suspected bird-flu have been reported in Phichit, one of the provinces listed by the government as an avian-flu “red zone”.

Two of the patients were men aged 59 and 86 and the other was a boy aged 7. All three had reportedly been in contact with dead chickens and were being treated in an isolation ward at Phichit Hospital.

Pending the results of laboratory tests for evidence of the bird-flu virus, doctors said the three patients were not allowed visitors.
