Forum: Midwest-Kansas City Preppers

Pun Intended – at 17:07

Are there any Midwest, specifically Kansas City preppers here? I wanted to start a local thread in case there was anyone out there in the area.

I don’t know that I could call myself a prepper when I read some of the posts here. But I have some extra water, several cases of protein bars, huge Costco jugs of nuts, 1 year expiration dated Granola, etc. I don’t have a generator (wouldn’t know what to do with it). I don’t have water jugs with the bleach mixture stored under my house (I buy bottled water at the store). I just do the enough to make myself feel a little better. I’ve got two small children so I have to do something. But my husband thinks I’m a little crazy for being so worried about it. So I have to walk that line somewhere between my instinct to protect my kids and not seem too crazy.

lauralou – at 18:51

Hi Pun, I’m in the midwest. Not in KC, but not that far away on the Kansas side. I’m with you on the Costco jugs of nuts! Cashews at my house. LOL.

NEMO – at 20:01

I was in Olathe from 92 to 03. Still not too far away. Kid graduating from UMKC in a week.

giraffe – at 21:31

I am in southwest kansas, but it seems I am in the KC/Olathe area every weekend these days. Have been prepping a bit here and there, but not anywhere near ready.

KCMO prepper – at 21:57

Hi Pun, I’m just north of KC. Actually, I’m surrounded by the city limits, but amazingly enough, haven’t been sucked in yet. My husband started out rolling his eyes. (I prepped somewhat for y2k) But now he has come around. Perhaps the RX for tamiflu from his job that’s sending him to Canada in a couple weeks had something to do with that! I started upping my preps in Sept. 05. I’m not near as stocked as I’d like to be yet. But the garden is doing well, and we’re going to be planting a berry crop. We even looked into relocating, but it’s just not financially possible right now. I hang out between here and curevents. It helps to know we’re not alone.

Power Hungry – at 00:18

Well, your post got a dedicated lurker to chime in. I’m in Olathe. We have some preps in and more to come slowly. More than anything, I am keeping my ear to the rail. I don’t want to prep for nothing. I figure that I’ll have minimum 1–2 weeks advance notice before the masses clue in that there is an emergency. In that time, and several runs to Costco, we can round out everything needed.

Mother of Five – at 00:36

Hailing from Indiana, not far enough away from Indianapolis for my health when BF gets here :)

Pun Intended – at 11:29

Wow! I just got back on the Wiki this morning and saw all the responses! I’m actually in Overland Park, but thought KC would cover it. Anyone have any local sources for prepping supplies?

kc_quiet – at 11:37

Hi Pun Intended and all; yep, I am moving from SE KC back to Raytown (lol big move---NOT).My family tend to think of my prepping as an odd but ok hobby-Til we have an ice storm and don’t run out of tp, etc. I love out of the way places like Cargo Largo in Indep and Dirty Don’s Bargain Center in Raytown. Never know what if anything I’ll find, but there have been some real treasures. I wonder what you think, but I have lived other places and always feel like KC is in pretty good shape if TSHTF- an awful lot of us are 1 or 2 generations from the farm, and I still have relatives actively farming. Plus, at least in the ice storms, etc, I have noticed a real sense of cooperation and concern for neighbors. BTW I have contacted the water dept and I got a very good email back regarding their business continuity plans, concerns they are working on , etc.

Pun Intended – at 11:40

I’d love to hear more about what the water dept. said! Who is your water department there? I’ve got WaterOne and JoCoWastewater.

NEMO – at 20:04

Mickey’s Surplus in Argentine for camping supplies and army surplus items.

NEMO – at 20:05

Argentine is up 635 (or is it 29?)in the hispanic area.

kc_quiet – at 20:07

He said (via email) I am an Assistant Director here at the Water Services Dept(WSD) and have been asked to coordinate our preparations relative to the Avian Flu and possible Pandemic. To answer your basic question, “Has the WSD done any planning for [Avian Flu] possibilities? The answer is Yes. We have, and will continue, to monitor the developing situation closely. Although human-to-human infectivity of H5N1 has not been proven to have occurred, we are proceeding to plan under the assumption that it will. Out efforts thus far have been on the development of a Business Continuity Plan(BCP). To develop such a Plan requires some basic assumptions. Our initial assumption is that up to 50% of our overall workforce will not be available, for weeks or months at a time. Of course, the WSD is integrated with other Kansas City Depts, and must coordinate with them in many ways. And, as you mentioned, the WSD is dependent upon various Vendors and Suppliers(e.g. Chlorine), and we plan to establish special arrangements to insure timely reciept of critical supplies and materials. We will make absolutely sure the water keeps flowing! We thank you for your interest, and are always open to ideas or suggestions.

Ron Goold, Asst. Director ronald_goold@kcmo.org 816–513–0200

Not 100% reassuring(see disclaimer about working w/ other depts), but looks like they are trying.

Jayhawk – at 11:48

Hello fellow Kansas City neighbors. We live outside of the metropolitan area but do most of our shopping in KC. I’ve lapsed in my prepping and feel the need to get back into it. I’m considering a Sam’s or Costco membership. Do any of you reccomend one over the other? There is a Costco near my work so it might be more convenient but I’m more familiar with Sam’s. Anythoughts?

Thanks much!

KCMO prepper – at 12:41

Jayhawk, I’ve bought some preps at Sam’s, like rice, noodles, beans, spices etc., but mostly I shop the Aldi on N. Oak. I’ve haven’t been to Costco yet. Is it a membership club like Sams? For those planting gardens, Planter’s Seed in the river market is where I go. They also have ton’s of bulk spices!

04 May 2006

kc_quiet – at 11:07

Actually, I concur with Aldi, especially as far as prices go. Also Dollar General store.IMHO that is still cheaper than bulk at Sam’s or Costco either one.

giraffe – at 11:24

I will be in Independence MO this weekend and will be passing through Olathe, Lee Summit and all. I am hoping to be packed lightly, so I can bring home some preps at better prices than I can get in SWKS. We won’t have a whole lot of time, but do you have any suggestions for a “MUST” stop for preppers? I believe we will be passing through again the following weekend, as well, so hopefully I can stop at different places then.

kc_quiet – at 11:29

Cargo Largo at about 35th and Noland Rd Indep. However, it would be more fun to stop and take advantage of the cool historical stuff going on around the square. $1 admission to all the historical sites and Truman Library plus a $1 trolley to get around.(In honor of Harry’s bday).

giraffe – at 12:32

Maybe that is why I am having trouble getting a reservation…lol. Thanks! We are there for AAU basketball this weekend and next.

Bint Sahara – at 13:31

I’m a former KC resident now living about 90 miles south of the city in a very rural area. About ten miles east of me there is a prairie chicken preserve and ten miles south a migratory bird refuge. To make matters more interesting this area has increasingly become a duck hunter’s paradise thanks to Truman Dam. There are lots of duck lakes here. If that is not enough to qualify this place as a must visit on the Avian flu’s itinerary, it is also home to a number of small chicken flocks and further south we also have the hog confinement farms just in case the virus would like to mix it up a little.

KCMO prepper – at 16:37

Too muddy to work in the garden today, so I made my first batch of canned butter.(bought at Aldi) It’s sooo purdy!! I passed the directions on to my sister in Branson, who is also prepping.

Giraffe, depends on what you’re looking for. Myself, I’d hunt down an Aldi.

kc_quiet – at 22:44

Bint- yes and add in the hunters and ppl like dog trainers who raise quail.

05 May 2006

giraffe – at 15:40

Thanks KCMO and KC quiet. Every trip to the area I attempt to stop at Aldi’s, but alas we have not made it yet. Time is always too short on our trips to your area. I think I will force a stop this weekend, even if it means getting home at 4 AM. <grin>

kc_quiet – at 16:17

LOL plan an entirely separate weekend trip and you can add in Cabella’s! Whew! That’s a day by itself.

Where’s a good small town in Kansas for a bunch of California city folk who are sick of all the sirens in a town that’s grown too fast (we’re up to 80,000)? We need good stable jobs, affordable housing and a Costco, Sam’s Club, and/or Wal-mart within an hour drive? Hubby just lost his job so since we have to make changes….

Problem is we don’t want to live in a big city like Dallas TX. Sure we have family in Arlington TX but we just don’t want to live in a metro area so we were thinking Kansas or Oklahoma so we would be within driving distance for visits.

Lynn – at 00:47

Poppy - Look into Smithville, MO. Very near KC North, but still “small town” although it is growing fairly rapidly.

oh sorry I backspaced, because I forgot that I cleaned my cookies out and it erased my pending post! What I said: For my money, I would look at moving near the amish communities in missouri(jamesport) or illinois(arthur). I don’t know how close they are to sams, etc. but the community in illinois doesn’t seem too far from civilization and is fairly large. We visit @ once a year,(wistfully) and always come back refreshed. They’re so knowledgeable and peaceful and humble (just being in the area, makes you think differently). It’s so much different from my friends and neighbors, who are only concerned about where you went to high school, sports, and the newest fad/acquisition - i know, i need new friends! of course, I’m a nut if I mention bf -even to doctor friends, who are absolutely ignorant of bf- too busy, i guess. I wish we could “do over”(a favorite phrase of young children!), but with kids -their friends, school, etc. -and husbands work, I guess that all I can pray for, now, is a small piece of land.(sigh) Good luck! (you’re already ahead of the curve!)

Power Hungry – at 02:02

Poppy—We use to live in Hesston, KS. It sounds ideal for what you would want. It’s about 35 miles north of Wichita. Pop. is 3500. Nice people, small town feel but lots of manufacturing jobs in town so the tax base is high. Great schools. Super Walmart is 15 minutes. Sam’s in Wichita is 35 minutes via Interstate.

Check out http://www.hesstonks.org/

I wish we still lived there but Job transfer . . .

angeldare – at 13:05

Poopy,

I live in MO, south of KC. I grew up in KC, lived a few years in KY, and a few months in Cal. I enjoy living in a small town, though everything you want to do is a drive. In MO it is hard not to find a stable in just about everytown, and we have wal-mart supercenters in most avg size towns. The worst thing about MO is the weather. I don’t know much about KS other than its flat, and windy.

What type of stables jobs you looking for. In MO around the KC area you have quarterhorse farms, Hunter jumper, dressage barns around. There are still quite a few saddlehorse barns, and arabian(the society horse shows). There are just a few pony barns still around. I’m not sure about KS, though close to the MO boarder there are stables of all types.

Good Luck in your search

angeldare – at 13:06

all man sorry about the typo Poppy

kc_quiet – at 15:41

Poppy: take out a map of Mo and draw a ring around Nevada (pronounced ne-vay-duh)Missouri. My sis lives in El Dorado Springs and everything she needs is either there or Nevada. Plus you are approaching the Ozarks, very pretty and people are magnificent. Much depends on type of job you are looking for.( Check fed and state listings there are usually jobs open in lots of occupations) BTW if education and taxes etc are important to you check out Mo vs Ks. FOR sure you don’t want to live in one and work in the other!

Poppy – at 21:26

Thanks everyone. Seems most of you favor Missouri. My husband had family there about a century ago, mostly in Bates and Jasper counties. Education is important only with regard to community colleges or trade schools. I was not looking for horse stables though. I meant jobs with stability. Our only animal passion is breeding Mini Rex rabbits. Hopefully we can take most of our stock with us and find a place who will welcome our little furry friends. The jobs we are looking for are production/manufacturing, warehouse, forklift, electronics (for my son), that sort of thing. My other son does landscape maintenance.

Power Hungry – at 22:28

Poppy,

You may not know it, but there is quite a bit of friendly and not so friendly ribbing between Missouri & Kansas. Goes back to the Civil War. The reason the called it “Bloody Kansas” was because there were lots of cross border raids in which many people were killed.

I actually live in Kansas but have a vacation home in Missouri. I know Nevada, Missouri. It’s a nice place. Frankly, most communities in either place will be glad to have you.

Hesston and surronds would have all of the jobs that you listed. They make the world’s best lawn mower there. I know, I own one. Check out: http://www.hustlerturfequipment.com/ The plant is locally owned, employs several hundred, and all production, design, marketing, and management is on site in Hesston. They are currently hiring Fabricators, Welders, Painters and Assemblers.

Hesston also has a large farm implement manufacturing plant for Agco that employs about 1500. They are currently hiring Welders and Machinists.

Power Hungry-I’m familiar with some of what went on in that area during the Civil War. My husband’s great grandfather was with the Engineering Regiment of the West out of Missouri during the war. I guess I will have to check out Hesston. It seems to be recommended a lot. I will definately check out that company. Thank you for the link. You all have been so helpful, I can’t thank you enough.

giraffe – at 14:21

Well, I did it again. I made it home without making it to Aldi’s. Next weekend is our last to Independence MO….and I am just going to have to make time. Ames, Iowa is our destination for the following weekend. I did drop by Cargo Largo. Interesting shop. Didn’t find anything that I needed for prepping, but did purchase a couple of items for my classroom.

kc_quiet – at 21:08

Poor giraffe! Maybe there’s an Aldi in Ames? LOL! Wherever you live, there HAS to be an Aldi closer!

I’m out here in Odessa, MO…about 40 miles from KC.

I’m originally from NW Arkansas, and was farm raised.

lohrewok – at 07:33

Cool beans. I didn’t even know this thread exsisted. Here I thought I was all by myself. So great to see so many people from my area prepping. I’m from Lawrence Ks. (I-70 W) side of KCKS.

Everyone has to go to Aldi’s. Prices for 5lb flour .78 cents. sugar (5lb) $1.89, rice (3lb) .79, pancake syrup (pretty good stuff) .99, 12pack double roll TP under $5.00, canned soups are about .50 each and pretty good.

I used to have family in Odessa. Currently have family in Cameron, St. Joe, Bethany.
