CG—it is depressing. The only good thing today was that we got news from Liputan. I had almost convinced myself that there was a deliberate news blackout in Indo right now. The thought of losing our uncensored channels to what is happening over there really frightens me, and I worry about that alot. I used to follow Boxun, the Chinese outlet, then I realized they had clamped down and no news was coming out of China any more. I worry that will happen in Indo, right in the middle of this growing problem. If they clamp down in Indo, like China, then this thing could explode on us and catch us completely off guard. I guess there is something good to be said about the decentralization of Indonesia—the government doesn’t seem to be breathing down everybody’s throats.

This time the Genogram shocked even me. I had not idea there were that many clusters…. I did not even finish adding all of them.

I’m going to go back over there and see if I can look at their previous report and see how many were “under investigation”……

Regarding this recent Stats Chart, you may want to compare it with the previous one: Indo Stats which looks as if it is a draft, same figures, more or less, but with the CFR (omitted from the most recent stats). I used the url address changing the figures and went back the whole of September and August. These 2 charts, the one posted by Commonground and the one I post) are the only ones, so it really does look like a first attempt at comprehending the (very worrying for them too) situation. At least it looks as if some Ministry employees are getting themselves in gear… That does tell me someone up is very very very worried, perhaps not just about BF itself, but also about the increasingly annoyed and anxious feelings of the international community about Indonesia’s handling of this problem. One good think about this: they’re obviously starting to work seriously, maybe there is still hope that TS does not HTF?

Certainly, the CFR figures for the confirmed cases is horrific, even though it looks like line 3 (Jawa Barat) has a smaller CFR figure for the highest number of cases, compared to the others. And quite frankly, the figures for probable and suspected cases, despite being lower than the confirmed figures, are still so high (smallest figure being a CFR of 20%). Yeah — even if we get a pandemic with 20% CFR, that still means TEOTWAWKI…

The article doesn’t say if anyone else was showing any signs of illness. I am hoping that the officials are just taking all the precautions they can. WHO is there also it says at the end of the last paragraph.

I don’t think know anything about the nine year old boy. I try to focus on East Java and with my dog being diagnosed with diabetes and trying to get her regulated I have had my hands full lately. I guess from the way they clustered the initials, I thought there were 3 from same family, but may be only 2. thanks pugmom - I can’t understand why anyone would be uptight in sharing this very important post. Sometimes certain forums get mad if you take something from one and put it into another. that is so childish to me. You are doing an absolutely terrific job, I really can’t say enough. Well, at this point, we can’t really go by initials - because then we would be assuming. It says “One family suspect bird flu” so why can’t we entertain the idea that it is ONE family. The only good news we’ve heard lately on this whole thing has come from Niman who has posited that the earlier cases are receiving a higher “dose” of the virus, while the later cases, more removed from the first cases in their clusters, are receiving a smaller “dose” and thus experience less virulence. That might explain these numbers.

What we are hearing coming out of China and Indonesia is just the tip of the iceberg.
I have a nephew working “one of those gov’mt jobs you don’t talk about”…and he has been in Indonesia for almost 2 years. He tells family that not only has China been lying all along about their numbers; but the Indonesian numbers are ALOT higher then has been reported in the news.
His last transmission to family has the virus doing the human-human-human jump again , in a remote town/village to the west of Jakarta. Military is trying to contain it, but with problems.
He says the main problem is the majority of people are uneducated, illiterate and just plain don’t want to believe that a chicken illness can kill everybody in a matter of days. They are hiding their chickens to keep them from being culled. The more they try to educate their public, the more they resist.
The “tipping point” is 664 cases world -wide; and when we don’t know the true numbers from these two countries alone,….how close are we REALLY ?

Separately, three members of the same family were being treated as suspected cases in Medan city on Sumatra island, a nurse said. Blood samples had been taken from the patients. Details of their conditions were not released.
Commonground - it is not your news gathering skills. The Indo government has clamped down quite a lot on the news lately. As Madamespinner says, there are probably a lot more cases than we hear of anyway - we hear of just those cases that spill out into the media.

I will share any and all of them with you. Some, about 20 have been very successful, the others are iffy, with just occasional hits. It is no mystery, just time-consuming, and I have learned the tricks on how to do it. I will be very happy to send you the juiciest ones. I even have them set up so the best ones have the “cari” search feature right when you call them up. I have never concentrated just on my area—I scan all of Indonesia, as I am intellectually curious about everything over there. If you are doing only 7, that is probably the reason you don’t get many hits. I often find info about, say Medan, printed in a Sulawesi newspaper. I have sources I go to that have had no hits, but I keep returning, as they have had some BF stuff way in the past, and I never know when it is going to bear fruit. If you are adamant about not wanting to do it any more, we understand, but it won’t take me any time to send you off my urls. Also, since I am on every day, you could just spell me when I am gone. I have to admit to you that this is very difficult for me emotionally. Pugmom at 12:24… I think the 9 year old is the same that we had listed in Ciputat Raya, Jakarta, we just didn’t have a name before. The date of death is the same. This is the case which was confirmed positive.
I pulled up Google Earth to check the distance between these locations. A road goes from Bekasi, through Jakarta, to Tangerang (which appears to have access roads from many locations). As a crow flies, the distance from Bekasi to Tangerang is 25 miles.

Since everyone realizes nobody can predict this it made sense to me to use a concrete date for planning purposes. I find that having this date as ‘real’ for me is actually doing me a lot of good. I’m presently working 11hr days so when I get home I’m a bit tired. But hey, we only got X days left, and that gives me the energy to get more done (i.e. prep related) or spend my time more wisely, (i.e. bike riding with the family, etc). Otherwise it’s too easy to put things off.
