Hi! Has anyone tried freezing eggs? I found several web sites that said that you can freeze them out of their shell for up to a year. You can lightly beat whole eggs or seperate them. You have to add salt or sugar to yolks if they are by themselves. I put some in individual baggies with the number (1,2 and 4) on each. You can put quite a lot in a small space! This seems an inexpensive prep for the optomistic power staying on scenario. I figure if the power goes out or it’s time to rotate them, I’ll just cook them up and put them on the dog’s food. My chest freezer thawing may not be a problem if it goes down during the winter.
Gently mix the yolk with the white without making bubbles then I put them in icecube trays to freeze, when frozen pop them out put in a freezer bag and you are ready to go. We do this when the eggs are on sale, make sure you thaw completely before using.
Thanks Michigan Mom! Do they taste ok for scrambled, omlettes ect? Or Just for baking?
IMO they are good for omlets and baking. Iues them for a potato meat mix we fry up on the week ends. Nothing is as good for a scrambled egg as a fresh egg. They keep well for about 6 months in the freezer not the one attached to the fridge (2months). mix them gently and enjoy.
I freeze in the ice trays sprayed with Pam then pop into bags & vaccuum seal ‘em & store in freezer.
As above @ 21:52, but I put mine into muffin tins sprayed with pam, freezed them, pop out and store in zip lock baggie in freezer.
I’ve used them in cookies, cakes, omlets, with no deterioration in quality after 3 months.
Thanks for the tip! I tried freezing Egg substitue to see if that would work - yuck!
Powdered whole eggs are cheap. I have frozen fresh eggs, but just recently purchased several #10 cans of powdered eggs. 170 eggs per can cost $10.99. $4.49 flat fee shipping. I was impressed with their service. Definitely not affiliated with their company. I am in Arkansas, they are in Canada. http://tinyurl.com/zkmha link to #10 can. I agree fresh eggs are the best, but these make decent scrambled eggs, like what you get at McDonald’s.
There are a number of relatively easy methods available on the Internet for preserving eggs long-term. The following is one.
