The boy died on Friday at a hospital in Jakarta, Runizar Ruesin, the head of the centre, told Reuters.

‘’‘TANGERANG, Indonesia Indonesia on Sunday started destroying pigs in its effort to contain the rapid spread of bird flu, which has killed at least 57 people across Asia and devastated poultry stocks.
Plans to slaughter 200 swine, however, were sharply reduced as the authorities wrangled over the best way to battle the deadly disease. Eighteen pigs that tested positive for the H5N1 strain of the virus were killed on a farm in Tangerang, about 40 kilometers, or 25 miles, west of Jakarta.’‘’
Agriculture Minister Anton Apriyantono, who oversaw the killings, backed away from an earlier pledge to destroy all pigs on farms hit by the deadly avian influenza, saying Indonesia now favors targeted culls, something international health experts support. “We only want to kill those that are infected,” he said.
The area targeted Sunday was 15 kilometers from the home of three people who earlier this month became the first people in Indonesia to die of bird flu - a 38-year-old government employee and his two daughters, 9 and 1.
Authorities still do not know where they contracted the disease as they had no known contact with birds but decided to start with the closest point of infection, Tangerang. Apriyantono said farmers who culled their pigs or agreed to an animal relocation plan would be compensated with cash and cows.

Experts worry that pigs infected with both bird flu and its human equivalent could act as a “mixing bowl,” resulting in a more dangerous virus.
The United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization this month said more research was needed to better understand the role of pigs in spreading bird flu.
The recommendation based on current knowledge is to raise pigs and other animal species separately, and to include pigs in surveillance plans when an outbreak occurs in poultry,” Domenech said at a bird flu conference in Kuala Lumpur

Comment: The absence increase was very slight - 0.8 per cent at primary level and 0.1 per cent at secondary [level] - and I don’t know if this info is particularly relevant. I posted it simply because I remember there was an uptick in viral activity before the 1918 pandemic. Again, don’t know if I would read too much into this.

With smallpox, if one person in the world comes down with it, it’s a pandemic because it’s nonexistent, DiMino said.”
If that statement by a “county director of health” doesn’t frighten you, then you aren’t paying attention.

92 students ill in latest suspected food poisoning in China 2 hours, 56 minutes ago
BEIJING (AFP) - Ninety-two young Chinese students fell ill with suspected food poisoning in southwest China in the sixth such case in a week, state press said.
The poisoning, at a primary school in Sichuan province, left 23 pupils hospitalized, a local official told Xinhua news agency.
The local government was monitoring all 780 students at the Pengdian Central Primary School.
Students and staff have been given preventative medicines, and authorities have ordered the dining hall be disinfected, Xinhua said.
Authorities were waiting for the results of tests to determine the cause of the poisoning.
The latest case came after 55 children fell ill after being served a tainted breakfast at a primary boarding school in central Hubei province on Friday.
In another case, a 14-year-old girl died and her two friends were left seriously ill after eating roasted chicken heads and ham on Wednesday at a barbecue stand near their school in northeast Jilin province, Xinhua has said.
The girl who died was found vomiting and twitching on Wednesday evening.
In yet another poisoning last week, 171 students developed symptoms of nausea and vomiting after they had supper at Qiqihar Medical School, in northeast Heilongjiang province.
Investigations into the exact cause of the incident were ongoing, reports have said.
On Monday, two separate outbreaks of food poisoning from school meals in northwest China’s Shaanxi province and neighboring Shanxi province struck down 240 students, including 69 who were hospitalized, state media said.
Food poisoning is a relatively frequent occurrence in China, often caused by lax implementation of sanitary rules or the use of sub-standard or contaminated ingredients.
