I am also suddenly remembering that several of the textbooks on our shelves came from a teacher who was asked to review several texts. He got a stack of complimentary copies and passed them out to whatever kids/families wanted one at the end of the review process. It might be worthwhile to check in with the local school to see if there are any available complimentary or out dated textbooks (I think science texts can get outdated but suspect that a ten year old English lit text would still have some things worth reading).

Tonight there is news that there are suspicious cases in Karo, Indonesia, with possibly two clusters of BF. My family is spread across the county and I am realizing that I need to make a plan whereby we all know where/who to call within the family in case of emergency or sudden important news. I think any bird flu news will take at least a few days to impact here, but perhaps not. One sick passenger into SeaTac airport could change things quickly.

I am thinking of call home as #1 and call a specific (often home) friend as #2

My family has a fair amount of allegies (mold, pollen, cats) but we’ve never been allergic to food stuffs. I was doing some reading today and learned that even adults can suddenly have a food allergy develop. It occurred to me that I should test some of the food stuffs that we are storing. I’ve stockpiled a fair collection of dried beans (cheap, store easily, good protein source) but we don’t usually eat a lot of beans in regular life. I’ve also stored some nuts.

The top eight foods that cause allergic reactions are: peanuts, tree nuts, fish and shellfish, eggs, milk, wheat and soy (Readers Digest June 2006). Family members should be told to pay attention to any food that makes the throat “itch” as that can be a warning signal.
