Forum: Type a and B and C Influenza Question

Boy do I hate the software nature of this board! I have tried six times to get a capital A into the title of this post, and the board software keeps making it a lower case A. Dang!

Well, that aside, here is the question.

I read once that Type B flu comes from Type A flu. Now, I have gone on the internet and used Google to try to find a site that confirms this. (I am not a virologist and am seeking to learn some fundamentals about influenza without taking a series of college courses.) At any rate, most of the technical articles are way above my knowledge level and I can not seem to find a “primer” on influenza that says that Type B viruses have evolved from Type A viruses.

Does anybody know if this is true or if there is a site that I have not found that confirms this?

Does it follow that Type C flu is derived from Type A, also? Are they all negative strand RNA viruses?

Or, is Type C flu just a catchall phrase for a multitude of viruses that mimic normal influenza (H1, H2, H3…)?

FluWiki’s Influenza Primer is a good place to start. (This links to the subsection that specifically addresses your question).
