Look under Mortuary and funeral services; handling of deceased persons and animals, which is under Medical and Health Services which is under Anticipated problems.

07 October 2006

crfullmoon – at 09:45

Could it be broken out into its own visible category underneath Medical and Health Services, then? It is a problem that needs better local awareness/planning.

(Dead bodies don’t require further medical or health services, so a visitor might not have looked under there.)

Can this be added Animals shown to be infected by H5N1 to also show up on the front page, right under the human cases numbers link? At least for the awareness week?

Many still think it is “only bird flu”.

having a bit of trouble getting on flu wiki today. yerself, Sir, or too much traffic? :)

If we are going to have a few “don’t miss these” links, then I’d vote for:

  1. http://www.fluwikie.com/pmwiki.php?n=Main.ConfirmedCasesUpdated
  2. http://www.wpro.who.int/sites/csr/data/data_Graphs.htm
  3. http://www.fluwikie.com/pmwiki.php?n=Science.GraphOfClusterSizeAndFrequencyOverTime
  4. http://www.fluwikie.com/pmwiki.php?n=Science.H5N1Clusters#IndonesiaApril2006
  5. http://www.fluwikie.com/pmwiki.php?n=Opinion.ASeverePandemicIsLikely

Hadn’t thought of “animals” - good idea, crfullmoon. I think much of this information just speaks for itself. Now, if only we could show disruption.

The “Create New Topic” thread is having a bad case of spam attacks. And it’s lasted a few days at that rythm too. Why not completely delete the file, not just close it? It contains one post of value, which could easily be copied onto a new thread with a very different title such as: “How to ?” or “Threads How To Tips”, no? Or is this impossible? Thanks. And have a nice Sunday y’all.

crfullmoon – at 08:14

(If it got retitled “spambot trap”, would it still work as such, so newbies don’t look at it?)

Have a good weekend.

pogge – at 12:35

Why not completely delete the file, not just close it?

Because the spam ‘bots would just recreate it.

RobTat 09:51

Hey folks. Been trying to figure out how to post a document in a thread. Been thru the instructions for creating a link and a page…and I’m none the wiser.

I have a Microsoft Publisher doc I want to share in Inky’s flyer thread, but I’m stuck. Can someone point me in the right direction?

curious poster – at 10:36

What does the Korea thread have to do with bird flu?

lugon – at 10:55

RobT - you can’t post a document in a thread, unless it’s all plain text. You can share an email OR, if you don’t want to do that, then send to lugon at singtomeohmuse dot com and ask the receiver to write to lugon asking for the document. That should work and if the file is too big then I just die.

lauralou - maybe even add a link to the forum where newcomers are welcome!

lugon – at 11:02

I mean Forum.WelcomeToFluWikiForum

lugon – at 11:02

lauralou - it’s your thread, btw! :-)

RobTat 16:55

lugon;

Thanks for the response. Sorry, maybe I was asking the wrong question. Are you saying that I need my own website, I put the document there and then put a link to it in the thread? Is that the only way to make my document available, other than email it to someone?

The document is 600Kb, is that too big to email to someone who can link it and get it posted on InKy’s Pandemic Flyer thread?

pogge – at 17:16

Are you saying that I need my own website…

It has to be on a website somewhere in order for you to link to it. And even at that, all you can do is provide it for download. A document created in MS Publisher isn’t going to display in anyone’s browser.

ETA:

Whoops, silly me. MS Publisher can be used to create websites as well as printed documents (can you tell I don’t use it?). But even if that’s what you’ve done, it still has to be on a website somewhere for others to view it.

Mods,

Concerning the exclusion of threads concerning pandemic preparedness and religion:

A person’s religious beliefs during a time of severe pandemic will likely be the foundation that supports and sustains them during the crisis. Is it right to remove from pandemic preparedness discussion that which will support and uphold many people? Arguments and flame wars over religion are counterproductive, I agree. But discussions within the framework of pandemic preparedness is practical, and in my opinion needed because religion shapes and influences the decisions many people make during times of national and personal crisis. The key is to maintain forebearance during those discussions. If one is an atheist, then they do not have to join in the discussion. If they are Hindu, Moslem, or Jew…etc then I think threads concerning pandemic preparedness for people of those religions should be acceptable also, as long as no thread advocates destructive behaviour towards those of other religious belief or those holding no religious belief.

The point of my post is to suggest to the moderators that religious threads within the framework of pandemic preparedness and community aid/assistance is a practical and needful thing. They should be held within the boundaries of pandemic preparedness by the mods, just like all the other threads, but allowed to be included in the discussion.

My suggestion is to start an experimental thread with proper exhortations to maintain forbearance and keep it within pandemic preparedness boundaries. Troll behaviour would be discouraged the same way as is done in all the other threads.

One final note: If/when a severe pandemic occurs, discussions on most threads will take on religious overtones very quickly. Mark my words. Better that this is addressed now with calm and thoughtful deliberation ahead of time, than muddled through during a time of great stress.

Thanks.

InKyat 09:36

Where is the best permanent place on Flu Wiki to post links to pandemic flu flyers? The ones I worked on, with input from the community, are being viewed and used to a degree I did not anticipate when I designed them to hand out in my subdivision. SaddleTramp and her husband even managed to get their local paper to print them as a public service announcement for every home in their county. I’m thinking that a discussion thread (Pan Flu Flyer To Go) is probably not their best “permanent address.” They need to be easily found by visitors who want to do something to help their communities. Where state and local governments and media are not getting the message out, lives are going to depend on activist volunteers. (I am not an activist by nature, but like all of you I can’t stand by and just watch this unfold without trying to do something.) Preparing for a mild pandemic (the pandemicflu.gov message) is a different ballgame from preparing for the severe pandemic that H5N1 may turn out to be, and that difference could very well mean life or death.

lugon – at 09:45

I fully agree with Okieman.

There’s also a link in one of the “UK” threads about how UK catholic church will deal with a pandemic - as a, shall we say, business (“being busy about something”). Their plan includes whether or not they will conduct marriages and so on, what to do about prior-to-death sacraments, how to deal with stress, what happens if certain age-groups are more decimated than others, etc.

Imagining someone reading such a plan from a pulpit does make me smile. And yet it’s specific, local, useful prepping.

Adjustment reactions don’t happen in a vacuum.

MnEagleat 10:32

I agree with Okieman. FluWiki needs to include the forum for people to be able to talk about their faith and all the repercussions involved with a possible pandemic. For it will be a person’s faith that will be the ultimate thing that will make them persevere---for in the end, it is all that we really have.

crfullmoon – at 11:38

Mods, found this while out Googling ; odd page to find does it need to be cleaned up?

pogge – at 12:05

My suggestion is to start an experimental thread with proper exhortations to maintain forbearance…

We’ve tried that experiment a couple of times and it hasn’t worked well. That’s why the rules are as they are.

pogge – at 12:09

crfullmoon:

That’s what a page looks like when it doesn’t exist. That particular page is left over from the original (legacy) forum on the wiki which hasn’t been in use for over a year. In anticipation of increased traffic this week, I archived those pages to make that server a little “leaner and meaner.” They’re not gone forever, though. I have a backup of everything.

DennisCat 12:09

I agree with okieman. A forum for faith based support would be good. I would think (my 2 cents worth) it should be a seperate forum.

MnEagleat 12:12

How can that be set up? And can it be posted at Flu Wiki for people to know it exists and to go to if they wish?

I want to ask some questions regarding the appropriateness of discussing a product which will contribute to saving lives in a pandemic. Please allow me to say first and foremost that it is not my intention to violate any rules. Fluwiki is a constant source of excellent information for us and we do not want to do anything which will jeopardize our participation.

Are there any forums where it is acceptable to invite discussion of our product?

Is it acceptable to do this on fluwiki? I am not particularly “forum literate” but in reading on a daily basis I do not perceive that it is not acceptable. Please forgive me if I have asked a question in which research should have revealed the anwser.

We don’t do commercial endorsements and we don’t carry advertising.

anonymous – at 13:57

That makes perfect sense. What we are seeking is a place where discussion can occur. We’re looking for feedback, pure and simple. Negative feedback, anything, at this point would be a huge help. People who understand the potential pandemic would be able to evaluate what we are doing. Our discussions are pretty much limited to people who do not believe in a pandemic.

It was not our intention to impose a commercial product on anyone. Please allow me to apologise; it was not our intention to offend or to take advantage.

Proper etiquette might suggest that no comments or discussion should occur between myself and anyone else on this forum from this point forward or any avenue of communication where promotion of a product could be manipulated. If I need to change my author name I will be glad to do that or other action which you might suggest.

Thank you.

Jane – at 16:24

Create a New Thread is still here, collecting spam. Does it serve a purpose? Does it slow us down?

I’m-workin’-on-it – at 16:27

lifeisgreat05 – at 12:29 You know, if you’ve read many of these forums, we have pfwag who pushes the work he’s done on water filters, we’ve had someone recently pop in and discuss with us a hand sanitizer ‘holster’ they were selling. I don’t think that posting something that is truly pertinent, in a thread where it would be appropriate like Discount Supplies, or Flu Preps, should be a problem for the moderators as long as it was a simple post and not a blanket of posts on several threads or a thread by itself. As a consumer, I’d like to see what people have that they think would work, but I hate the spam on here. If I were you and you are a manufacturer of the product or someone who could make changes in the product if we start telling you things that would make it better, I’d take a shot on a thread you think is a good one pertaining to your product & float it out there and see what happens. If it bombs, you’ll know it wasn’t considered helpful but if it floats, you might get some good feedback about how to improve the product.

Bronco Bill – at 16:27

Jane – at 16:24 --- It catches a lot of spam that gets thrown at FluWiki. If the thread is deleted, the “spambot” just re-creates it, so pogge leaves it as a “fly-catcher”.

It in itself isn’t slowing the Forum down. I need to get in and close a lot of old threads, but have been working on moving and getting settled for the past couple of weeks. I’ll be back at it tonite…

lifeisgreat05 – at 17:24

I’m workin’ on it: Thanks for being so articulate and kind. Since we have developed a product to genuinly help people, it’s really important to us to be ethical and respectful. I am going to “think” on your suggestion and approach it with the utmost “forum good manners” which we can put into action. I will be honest in that we do need to make money but our primary goal has been to save lives, to give people like ourselves a chance to survive. I agree emphatically about spam, whether it is here or in my own email. And again, thank you. You have no idea how much kindness means to us at this point!!

From Wikipedia:

Spamming is the abuse of electronic messaging systems to send unsolicited, undesired bulk messages. While the most
widely recognized form of spam is e-mail spam, the term is applied to similar abuses in other media: instant messaging
spam, Usenet newsgroup spam, Web search engine spam, spam in blogs, and mobile phone messaging spam.

Asking again about how one sets up a forum somewhere where faith & a possible pandemic/preparedness,etc. can be discussed. And if it’s possible to have it noted in FluWiki where people can link to it—altho it would be completely seperate from FluWiki—no affiliation, etc. Okieman, where are you? We need to get this ball rolling….somewhere…somehow.

gardner – at 10:17

MnEagle – at 10:10

You could set up a Blogger account or something like it. I think Blogger is free, which is a huge advantage for many of us, and it’s very easy to use.

InKyat 10:25

I put links for three versions of the pandemic flu flyer in one place: http://mindspinner.net. One link nets access to them all.

pogge – at 10:26

And if it’s possible to have it noted in FluWiki where people can link to it…

I’m not sure if this is what you mean, but there’s a section on the wiki’s Resources page which lists bulletin boards that cover “avian influenza and public health issues.”

If it’s intended to be strictly a discussion forum, I would advise you not to use this platform but instead to go with one of the off-the-shelf message board platforms. There are a number of them that are free to download. Of course, you still have to set up a hosting account somewhere, get the thing installed and running, etc.

MnEagleat 10:36

I’m not very computer-savvy as to how to do this stuff—which is the best way to set it up, etc. Who can help? Okieman, do you know how to do this stuff? What I meant by noting it in FluWikie—how—or if—is it possible to put the source of this site/forum we want to get going in FluWiki, so that people can find it when they are on FluWiki? Pogge, do you mean it would have to go under the heading of “Avian influenza and public health issues” on the Wiki’s Resources page that lists bulletin boards?

Pixie – at 20:06

Mods - two questions:

First, what is the procedure here that when someone appropriates and posts under the name of another? The post created today at 12:33 on the “Will a Pandemic Solve Any Problems” thread was not created nor was it posted by me. What is your protocol in these cases? Ninety percent of my posts have been generated from one IP address, which I believe you can see (only a few of my posts have been done from another computer).

Second, can you direct me to where I can find instructions on how to post graphics - specificlly charts and graphs? I have looked through the directions at the bottom of the forum page and have not been able to find this yet.

Many thanks.

I’ll refer the first to pogge.

As for the second, we can’t host a lot of pics, charts, graphs, etc. The easist way is to use a free service like photobucket or image shack or http://allyoucanupload.webshots.com/ and then once your graphic is up, just cut and paste the URL.

DemFromCTat 21:44

The “More Than a Dozen Quarantined in Maryland with Flu-like Symptoms” thread seems to have turned into the tin foil hat discussion board. I see one person has already asked that it be closed. As this is no longer a viable news topic and the thread has really gone off topic, should it be closed?

Watching in Texas – at 09:54

Are we there yet at 09:44

Doing so would seem to indicate that all “chatting” is now off topic and is discouraged. That thread is not the official “news” thread, which I believe the mods agreed needed to stick with the news.

Might I suggest a simple solution? Perhaps if the tin foil comments offend you….don’t read that thread…

the thread has really gone off topic

I don’t think it went off topic so much as the topic evaporated with the report that it was a false alarm. So people switched to blowing off a little steam and now it seems to be turning into a discussion about the reaction itself. I’m inclined to let it go at least for a bit.

Okieman – at 10:47

MnEagle – at 10:10 and at 10:36,

I’ve been off-line the past few days with work (on the road). Sorry about being slow to respond, I just now read this thread.

I’m not computer savvy enough to know how to get a faith based pandemic flu preparedness discussion board/platform established. I don’t know what direction to even suggest going with the idea. I do believe that if/when a severe pandemic starts there will be a great need in this area. Most folks will likely depend upon their local church or church organization for information relating to faith/religious issues as they are impacted by a pandemic. Discussion concerning how churches and religious groups can prepare and respond to needs on a local basis would be useful in my opinion.

I know that does not help much. Later this evening I’ll try to search out what is already on the web that might can be used as a forum for this type of discussion.

crfullmoon – at 12:51

MnEagle, the US gov made a checklist for faith communities; http://www.pandemicflu.gov/plan/tab7.html perhaps the state/locals didn’t make sure they saw it? Getting the leaders on board and telling their communities, and brainstorming with other local sectors, (including mental health professionals?) might help.

Hey, is there anyway you can bring it up on - what was that existing site ?- all sorts of faiths online in one place- name? my brain is stuck. Not at my regular computer, so, can’t look through old bookmarks. If someone else hasn’t thought of it, and the answer gets unstuck later, I’ll get back to this.

I’m-workin’-on-it – at 14:59

Hey, I went to Pandemic Preparedness, Personal Prep Guides, Rich Erwin, Food and tried to open the food link & got a ‘cannot be displayed’ message. Got that on all of that section except the 2nd water link — is it just my computer or does something need to be tweeked?

MnEagle and all others interested,

I found a little used Bird Flu forum that has a religion section that might work for faith based discussions relating to pandemic flu. It has a log-in, but I have not logged-in to take a closer look. It might be a good place for this type of discussion, I just don’t know. Here is the link:

http://enjoyitusa.com/birdfluforum/index.php

Mods, could one of you also take a quick look at this site and give us an opinion concerning it use for this type of discussion. This is so far out of my area of experience that I don’t know whether I am suggesting a good thing or something not so good.

Ya’ll let me know what you think, and if it appears to be doable we will “move in” and start building what ever is needed in this area of work. Thanks.

Those are three of the single quote marks on either side of the text to be bolded. Two on either side would italicize the text.
