Forum: Comments on News Thread Aug 9

A lot of people have found that ‘News Reports’ by date threads really useful in staying up to date with what’s happening. We’ve had some very positive responses, but it seems its a little hard to make sure that everybody just stays with news reporting on that thread. I guess it is a reflection of the liveliness of discussion and the diversity both of knowledge and of style, which are all signs of a thriving community. However, it may be a good idea to take pity on those who have limited time and want to just scan for news every day.

So Im going to suggest that we try out a new way of providing both the news and a parallel commentary series, by using a separate thread called ‘Comments on News’ with date. It should be quite easy to just post news to the ‘news reports’ thread, and then post comments on the ‘comments’ thread, with a reference to the original post (eg anon_22 at 12:00 Aug 9 etc). If you think it is easier for continuity of discussion to have the news item available on the ‘comments’ thread, by all means repeat the news posting (or an abridged version of it), so that those who only have time to check the news can do it a lot faster.

I suggest that we try that and see how well it works. You can even open 2 windows if you don’t want to go back and forth between the 2 threads.

Thanks again to all our contributors. We can’t build this forum without you!

Yippee, hurrah, happy happy dance.

As a person who uses the news threads to catch up on happenings, I would love the commentary to be separated. I want/need the commentary too as this is where links and trends on information come to light.

When can we start, when can we start??

Are we there yet? Are we there yet? (Guess who has children!)

I’m thinking, you can have BOTH news and comments on this thread, then make sure you post a just-news version to the news thread.

Whad’ya all think?

Excellent idea, I think it will work out wonderfully. Will have to remind people, in a consistent way, in the beginning, to post at the Comments thread. Should have a “standard” reminder: “Post all comments at New Thread Comments”.

I think that is an excellent idea anon22.

Now where did those cookies go?

re: Nigeria and Mr. White’s link posted on the news thread - “The strains are cousins of H5N1 viruses found in southern Russia and in northern Europe but are not of the same lineage as the virus that has rampaged through poultry flocks in Southeast Asia.”

I betcha a million dollars that they match North American strain in some way.

Now where did those cookies go?

Never leave cookies out where I can see them. (Does that count as commentary?)

Melanie – at 21:03

pogge,

Yes.

Of the 78% CFR that I posted in the news thread regarding the WHO reported cases of H5Ni in Indonesia…this is WITH medical treatment! What will it be when people are treating people in their homes when and if the hospitals are over run? I hate to think.

Medical Maven – at 22:59

Snowhound1: And even if you factor in undetected mild cases, (which is still a possibility though the data has not as yet shown that), once you remove hospital care you are still above 50 per cent CFR by all reckoning. (Unless this virus does a u-turn on the way to efficient h2h).

Just one more helpful hint - when you post to the news thread then intend to comment here, can you add a line to that effect - e.g. ‘will be commenting on this in commentary thread’

Hey MM…Leading to my increased belief, at least at this juncture, that for non essential personnel, the risk of contracting the disease during a pandemic, will not out weigh the benefit of trying not to contract the disease during the actual epidemic. If I still have reserves of food and water, after the worst is over, and I am able to share and help at that point, I will feel that my preparedness will have paid off. In the short term, the main objective, will be to get through it unscathed. Perhaps, I will be more valuable in the aftermath, than during. Just MHO

I have noticed today that the total number of fatalities in Indonesia reoprts as both 44 and 45. Can I assume that the latter is from those counting the eighth member of the family cluster even though that person was not formally tested?
