Forum: Whats Your PPF Part V

04 October 2006

Oremus – at 00:42

Old thread Whats Your PPF Part IV was too long.

My PPF is in the 2–3 range, but I’m pretty well prepped.

Scaredy Cat – at 01:02

Med Maven at something something:26,

That was so awesomely written, if I weren’t so lazy I’d put it on the quotes thread.

Call of the Wild – at 01:22

Some good news is usually balanced by bad news so my PPF has been rising to 5 based on the statements some experts have made. Preps are now arranged by type so I’m pretty well organised but not OCD about it. Did go and collect my LA which was getting a peep sight put on it as I thought that I don’t want to be without it if TSHTF. You should all know what an LA is by now…

fairly biting my nails – at 02:08

Call of the Wild – at 01:22

I’m a newbie and I don’t know what an LA is. Could you splain it to me?

I’ve only been prepping for about a month, because I hadn’t even heard of the bird flu until my ex-husband told me he was worried about it about a month ago. I said, “Bird Flu? What’s that, SARS?” Go ahead and laugh. I know it’s funny.

I have spent about $2,000 so far. Food, water, water purif system, wood, OTC stuff, masks, fireplace cooking stuff, heirloom veg. & fruit seeds, canning stuff, if you can think of it, I bought it! And I’m just getting started. I was thinking of getting chickens, but maybe that isn’t such a great idea.

I check the computer to see how many people are flooding into the hospitals in Indonesia several times a day, and wonder about how many more there might be that aren’t reported. A lot, I’m sure. And then there’s China. And Tailand and Vietnam. Kind of suspiciously quiet.

So I guess you could say my PPF is pretty freakin’ high.

AnnieBat 02:31

fairly biting my nails - please don’t freak out. Consider yourself a fortunate one who is now informed and making efforts for you and your family to be in a better position to cope when a pandemic does eventuate. As to when, if only mother nature could speak.

Remember, we Wikians are great news hunters and gatherers so you are probably getting an ‘overdose’ of information - which is better than knowing nothing but does need to be ‘considered’. Please don’t take that as saying there is nothing to be concerned about, just realise that every story that Wikians can find will appear here somewhere.

fairly biting my nails – at 06:54

Hi AnnieB

I’m not freaking out, really. I was just being funny. Mostly. Thanks for your concern though! :) I wish this Flu Wiki had those little emoticons or whatever they’re called. I do like to be prepared for anything.

I must be a hunter gatherer too!

Dr Dave – at 07:12

I travel weekly, so my employer has provided me with a wireless-capable laptop. On Monday, during a staff meeting, there was a lengthy presentation on how we are going to operate in a pandemic. Personal protection equipment was discussed, but the plan in my department is for as many as possible to work from home. Then it was announced that everyone in our department will be given a laptop— even those who do not travel. (I have probably mentioned this before, but our company sells emergency supplies to FEMA, the Red Cross, the U.S. military, et cetera, so I am assuming that we are developing a plan that will address the needs of these entities.)

At the end of our staff meeting, several people seemed quite disturbed and worried. If they did not have a PPF before, they certainly have one now. My PPF is 9. After TomDVM’s recent prediction of a 10% CFR, it will probably remain there for quite a while.

I’m-workin’-on-it – at 08:37

Dr. Dave, great news for you! I hope you’ll tell those worried folks to come to fluwikie for more info!

I’m really glad (and I’ll bet your family is too) that you’ve already got in hand a work laptop. How are you going to keep it charged up?

Monotreme – at 08:47

Dr Dave, here is another thread you might also consider posting to:

What Are You Hearing from Out in the Field

Call of the Wild – at 22:30

Fbmn at 02:08, LA is a lever action rifle. A lot of folks on this wiki have figured out that one day they might have to protect themselves. As your PPF rises it definitely enters your mind.

On the fence and leaning – at 23:38

I just went down to my basement to put up a few prep items I picked up. I sat back and looked at it all and realized that I have a bunch of stuff! It’s no where near enough, especially hearing from some of the braggers on here. Yeah, I’m talking to you! :-)) Anyway, my point is, just putting a few items per week over the past few months has really added up. Not enough for 6 months but I could probably scrape us by for 2 months, maybe more. My PPF didn’t move but I felt better bout my stockpile.

Sailor – at 11:00

My PPF just jumped from a 5 to 8 this morning when I read the information that Dengue in India has infected a significant number of doctors and hospital staff!!! If this is correct it likely is not Dengue as Dengue is spread by mosquitoes.

This appears to be the trigger point whith medical staff that I have been watching for.

Oremus – at 12:01

Calm down, Hospitals are not mosquito proof, HCW’s homes are not mosquito proof.

Oremus – at 12:02

Awaiting more proof. 8^)

Goju – at 16:30

While it may be dengue as they say… it could be H5N1… I would suspect this is how the Panflu would present itself in a large city in India.

This deserves close watching. Next would be similar cases popping up in major world cities surrounding international airports sans the mosquitos.

MAinVAat 17:50

Re: India - to quote Han Solo, “I have a bad feeling about this!” It has definitely raised my PPF. Hope they are running lab tests on everyone who arrives at the hospitals. Then the waiting for results….

bump – at 22:42
no name – at 23:33

Actually my PPF is declining from a screaming meme eight to a fearless four point five.

Left on my “to do” list is a composting toilet and solar set-up(batteries, wires, ect) for my 8, 15-watt panels and I am declaring myself done…as in “stick a fork in me” done.

Preparation is an interesting process. The emotional spikes, the sheer volume of information and consistant reenforcement of “the worst case scenerio” is overwhelming. Trying to grasp the concept of what we are considering, global pandemic, and getting the prep done. Can’t imagine preparing for a group that consumes preps on a daily basis…one is enough!!!

I find I am able to stay away from the FW for 24 to 48 hours whereas before I was on several times a day. This is helpful as well. Have seen a pattern over the past five months in the information and able to digest in a more detached way. I am able to consider a range of view points rather than death and destruction is on my doorstep every moment of the day, which is how I felt. I can’t imagine following this for YEARS!!! Must be exhausting!

Trying to not feel tooooooo stupid for being so concerned. Hoping, I am the laughing stock of my family when BF doesn’t arrive, they already think I am crazy and future get togethers could be brutal. Knowing I am eating beans and rice for the next 3 years BF or not…wondering if that in itself is a punishment enough for my enthuastic response to my bird flu fantasies. HaHa

Of course I haven’t told anyone that I couldn’t resist the iodine pills just incase of a nuclear incident and the nuke alert key ring is soooo tempting!!! My prepping suffers the bane of house remodeling which is…well, might as well. Once you open your mind…you never know what will come in and roost.

Time will tell. I know my life is more pleasant now that I am ready…for whatever.

On the fence and leaning.

Is bump good or bad?

I’m holding at eight…I know my answer is probably starting to get boring!!

On the fence and leaning – at 00:11

Hey Tom. I just noticed that I haven’t seen this thread pop up for awhile and wanted to keep it active. My PPF is starting to edge down but I think it’s just from news fatigue. I guess I am waiting for the frying pan over the head now, but I am still aware. Stuck at 4.

On the fence and leaning – at 00:13

Why isn’t it lower? I have great respect for you and seeing you at an 8 keeps me alert. Next time I am in Canada we have got to have a chat over beer and CHICKEN wings!

Petticoat Junction – at 00:21

OK, I know this is stupid but something I saw tonight made me edgy enough that my PPF jumped (at least for this evening) from about a 6+ to an 8. Probably not even related, but still…

I was driving by the airport where Air Force One lands when Bush comes to the ranch. Suddenly a big convoy of military transport-type planes (which I have NEVER seen land there) came out of nowhere, flying fast and low, one after the other after the other after the other. They went right over our heads, circled over the interstate and landed. (Did not have a ‘maneuver’ look to it, if that makes sense.) Then several more about 20 min later plus helicopters. And tonite I saw jets flying maneuvers overhead. (And as far as I know Bush isn’t at the ranch.)

The first thing that jumped to mind, and the feeling that I can’t shake, is that TS was about to HTF and they were redoubling supplies for Bush and/or his family to SIP at the ranch. Silly, I know.

And yet it seems like something is up. Earlier this week the biggest formation of Blackhawk helicopters that I’ve seen in 8 yrs here went overhead; so loud that my sister and I couldn’t carry on a phone conversation indoors. And a friend in TN said the same thing happened to her tonite and the 101st is still deployed; she thought it was odd, too.

This is probably more the stuff of the rumors page, but since it’s what sent my already edgy PPF up several notches (and I am not normally the ‘Chicken Little’ type), I figured I’d put it here instead. ;)

libbyalex – at 00:33

Petticoat Junction — (love the handle!) — while this doesn’t account for everything you’ve seen, the fighter jets were scrambled late this afternoon over NYC and DC and several undisclosed location because of a small plane that crashed into a 50 story apartment building in Manhattan. (It was an accident… but those details will be in tomorrow’s paper.)

Interesting observations. Keep reporting them!

Texas Rose – at 00:42

Depending on my mood, I range between five and seven. I feel like we’re running out of time.

Petticoat Junction – at 00:48

Libbyalex - lol on the handle; I have four daughters. ;)

I knew about the plane crash…have a friend who is a realtor in that area and was trying to get ahold of him all afternoon. But this wasn’t ‘that kind’ thing, I don’t think. (And if I remember correctly, they said on the news that no jets were scrambled here, though I could easily be wrong.) I saw some pretty bizarre things overhead after 9–11, and more than one flight-intercept literally over my back yard.

The helicopters and late-night fly-overs have been on the increase for the last 2–3 wks, perhaps 4–6 wks, that I’ve noticed. But the convoy of transport planes tonite is unlike anything I’ve ever seen here.

That’s what really got my attention….what on earth could they be bringing in HERE in such quantity?? There is another airport here in town that can also handle large jets like that, yet they were flying into the one where Bush lands and were definitely military. It was just odd.

JWB – at 01:00

The Maryland Event blended in with too many other things that have happened recently put me at ….well….. above 9. I predicated some time ago that ‘The Day’ or when TSHTF would be October 18th 2006.

Yes, it is. I also think the activity noted by Petticoat Junction is worth paying attention to. Pay attention to what they do, not what they say. Although, the two are getting closer and closer day by day.

Actually, it was a very appropriate response. You are assuming that the level of resource deployment was based upon local authorities belief that they were dealing with bird flu. The truth is that you do not know what local authorities believed they were responding to.

The fact that the potential victims were from Africa, may have also played a role in the level of response, esp. considering an anthrax scare from earlier this year:

From CDC website

On February 21, 2006, the Pennsylvania Department of Health (PDOH) reported to CDC and the New York City (NYC) Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) a case of inhalation anthrax in a man who resided in New York City…

On February 16, the patient had traveled from NYC to northern Pennsylvania for a performance with his dance troupe. He collapsed later that evening with rigors and was admitted to a local hospital, where he reported a 3-day history of shortness of breath, dry cough, and malaise. A chest radiograph revealed bilateral infiltrates and pleural effusions…

The patient made traditional African drums by using hard-dried animal hides (e.g., air-dried until brittle enough to crack) obtained in NYC from importers who primarily sold African goat and cow hides…

Actually, it was a very appropriate response. You are assuming that the level of resource deployment was based upon local authorities belief that they were dealing with bird flu. The truth is that you do not know what local authorities believed they were responding to.

Residents said a local police officer found a woman suffering from morning sickness inside an apartment building.

“The only thing I saw was when he came in. I saw the woman laying there and I heard her throwing up,” said Shelley Radcliff, resident in the apartment.

There was miscommunication between local law enforcement and the 16 residents in the building because of a language barrier. The residents were quarantined and then escorted into tents for evaluation.

It could have been a combination of miscommunication and mass hysteria. Without knowing what was communicated, we’ll never know. It would have to be the mother-of-all-miscommunications for that response, or they are on pins and needles expecting something. Personally, I would say it was both.

I have felt for over a year that ground zero would be Indonesia, and my rational mind still feels that way. My current PPF is 3 (it would be higher if I wasn’t prepped as much). India has me concerned because flu can be misdiagnosed as dengue, and my pandemic dream (see first entry in “I Had My First Pandemic Dream” thread).

If any of those dengue cases in India test positive for bird flu, my PPF will jump to 9.

Tom DVM – at 15:03

Tom DVM – at 16:01

Are we there yet.

Thanks. You have asked an honest question and I will try and give an honest answer…and I hope I don’t get burnt at the stake later. /:0)

I was a one man practising farm animal veterinarian for twenty-years before I sort of burnt myself out. During that time, I had a lot of opportunity to see some pretty amazing behavior by pathogens in the wild…where they behave a lot differently then in a test-tube.

There are many examples but I will give you a few. There had been a Blackleg caused by a soil bacteria called Clostridia…this same bacteria causes Tetanus and Anthrax I think. The disease causes a myositis and the animals can die very quickly…

…Anyway, the last known outbreak in my area was in the 1950′s. In the space of a few weeks in the mid-1990′s, this disease simultaneously popped up on most farms in our area. It should be remembered that each farm is an isolated island…there is no mixing of cattle…This disease was so rare that I had not seen a case of it in my time as a veterinarian.

Leptospirosis is a bacteria that is carried by deer…they pee in ponds that cattle drink from…the bacteria replicates and can cause abortion storms in cattle…

…again, I wouldn’t see anything for a few years and then, in a short period of time, abortions would begin on several farms at the same time, distant from each other by geography.

After a while in this environment, you become very sensitive to these things and the subtle environmental changes that may cause them.

So what does this have to do with Christmas and H5N1?

Well, H5N1 is a ‘freak’…a ‘monster’. This bug seems to have a mind of its own…every time the experts say it will turn left…it turns right. As the retiring head of the WHO or CDC in Asia said a year ago…H5N1 has made a liar out of every expert in the past nine years.

Knowing this, I have tracked this ‘little buggar’ through the woods, I have watched it’s footprint and its tricks and watched how it twists and turns and hides…

…I think I have H5N1 pegged…

…then I look behind me and it is tracking me!!

Anyway, my sleuthing, for what it’s worth convinced me two years ago that it would become a pandemic between Sept 2006 - Apr 2007.

This bug every time has done the unexpected and I expect the little terrorist to get us when we are not looking…which would be between Christmas and New Years…remember the tsunami…that doesn’t mean it will be announced then…it will start the process then…more or less.

Hopefully I have explained things a little bit…but like I said before, I hope I am wrong and it doesn’t happen this year or for ten years for that matter.

See the thread ‘’I Had My First Pandemic Dream III” JWB – at 10:58

And what significance in Ramadan does the 18th hold?

INFOMASS – at 19:23

In Mecca and Medina in Saudi Arabia, millions of devout Muslims gather to discharge a duty and visit the home of Mohammad, their prophet. They come from all over the world, live in close quarters in temporary accomodations, and then return home when it is all over. If any of them had “parts” of the panflu, this would be a great chance to mix it all up. October 18th is one of the climactic days, so it is not irrational to suppose that conditions would favor that date to create that which we fear. Since symptoms would not appear for several days, it would not be possible even to know if this had happened. Similar mixing could occur at Thanksgiving and Christmas when many in the US (and for Cristmas only, Europe) travel.

Milo – at 19:40

INFOMASS – at 19:23

I’m not as versed in Islam as I should be, but it sounds like you’re describing the Hajj, which was in January this year (IIRC). I think Ramadan is spent mostly at home, not traveling to Mecca. How is Oct 18th important in Ramadan this year? (I’m just always curious about other religions. I ought to know more. I know the Laylat al-Qadr is an especially important night to devote to prayer, but I thought the exact date of that is uncertain.)

INFOMASS – at 20:25

Milo: You are right- I was confusing Eid-il Fitri (the end of Ramadan and a time of celebration and gift giving) with the Hadj - my bad. A Moslem friend was going to Mecca at this time and I wrongly conflated the two.

Petticoat Junction – at 21:00

libbyalex – at 16:03

Wow. That does sound very unusual. Sounds to me (adjusting tin foil hat here) that really long term supplies are being brought in. I wonder for how many?

I should offer a caveat about the night-time maneuvers (she says after just being outside, thinking perhaps she was overreacting and looking up to see a military jet so low overhead that the landing gear and windows were discernable; very unusual.)

Ft Hood, the largest Army post in the US, is less than half an hour from here. So seeing ‘military’ stuff is not unusual (or even hearing shelling practice), although the frequency seems to have definitely stepped up as of late.

However, that same fact makes me wonder all the more about the transports. It would actually be just as close to land supplies at Ft Hood and drive them up to Bush’s ranch as it would to land them north of town and drive them down. Which says to me that these supplies came from further away than the base just down the interstate…and also that something was being transported by the military but was NOT bound for the base. Again, just odd to me.

Petticoat Junction – at 21:09

The local health dept is not helping my PPF, either. We had three dead birds in our backyard within a month in Aug/Sept. They all looked like they just dropped out of the sky and had no apparent signs of trauma. We called for testing with the first bird but based on the response didn’t bother with the others.

The city health dept told us that they’d “had a huge die-off lately for some reason and it was probably just ‘one of those’ “ so they wouldn’t be testing it. ?!?!?!?!?!

We then called the county health dept and were told that since they knew there were confirmed cases of West Nile in the county, they weren’t testing birds anymore. We asked specifically about avian flu and got scoffed at.

And then we had two more birds drop in the next month after that round of calls. We’ve seen several that look the same around the neighborhood, too, although we have no idea what it is (since they are refusing to test, aargh).

I’m not sure which sent my PPF up more…multiple birds dropping dead in my yard or the attitudes of the health officials. :(

Dr Dave – at 21:12

Thanks to all of the recent news about flu preparations and flu awareness, my PPF has gone down from 9 to 8. Yes, I still think it will happen soon, and I still think it will be rather nasty, but I really like reading about the sharing of ideas and information—especially from schools, governments, and international agencies.

As Hamlet said, “The readiness is all”.

gharris – at 22:02

C o t W – at 22:05

PJ - When dubya goes into SIP mode he’s going to need a lot of supplies - just stocking up I guess

Petticoat Junction – at 22:06

gharris - Sure, it’s possible. I don’t know what military transports into a non-military town would have to do with that and the increased fly-overs started before the bomb tests. But there’s obviously a LOT that goes on about which we have no idea.

With Bush’s ranch in the neighborhood there tends to be a lot of increased activity anyway; this just seemed to go beyond even that ‘norm’ and had the look of stocking up supplies here for some reason.

Try just calling the base and asking what is happening. Either they will tell you or not. Either way, you will be able to figure out if it is “standard” or something special. - Call and check the primary source whenever possible.

JWB, the last ten days of Ramadan are considered highly blessed, especially the 27th night which is also called the “Night of Power,” or the “Night of Destiny.” It is believed that on this night Muhammad received the first revelation of the Qur’an. It is also a period of heightened alert levels as according to the Islamic belief system, successful martyrdom attacks during this period provide “special rewards” for the terrorists. Got lots of preps and an “All dressed up and nowhere to go” feeling around here.

I think I will ask Santa to bring a copy of “Camping for Dummies” this Christmas so we can start using/rotating out some of this stuff.

Will stayed prepared, but have climbed off the emotional roller coaster. There’s always something to worry about it seems with BF (99.9% of which often turns out to be nothing as far as a pandemic starting) and we are just too darn sick and tired of worrying. We keep our eyes and ears open, but we’ve checked our emotions at the door.

My PPF has been bouncing a little lately. Some of it is stress related. You know … that list of things you have to get done that seems to grow rather than shrink. Most of it has nothing to do with a pandemic.

But the on again off again bounce of news has also set me off a bit. Lots of information, then none, then back up … then something out of left field. Even good news has a way of bringing it to the forefront and making it “more real” than a practice drill.

Plus, its an awful time of year to try and scrape together money for more preps. Property taxes, business taxes, etc. are all due before the end of the year (most in November). Income tax will hit in January. Then there are all the holiday expenses … including Christmas for five children. Plus I’m trying to figure out a way to get my kids next year’s curriculum well ahead of when I normally purchase it … just in case.

I’ve got a ton of things I’d like to do on the food-prep end … but counting the pennies to do it comes first.

So, its probably just stress related bumping of the PPF, but it also feels like there is something that is just out of sight that wasn’t there before.

Either way, see http://www.defenselink.mil/pubs/20050527_2005BSR.pdf

By area, I think the largest is Elgin in Florida - about 464,000 acres. Forts Benning, Hood, Drum and Kaiserslautern in Germany are all big in one way or another.

People, will you please stop with this insulting crap about Ramadan?

The hasty association of Islam with terrorism is disgusting and insulting. Yes, a small minority of Muslims are terrorists and support terrorism, but please, you’re not helping. Some of your posts sound very very bigoted against Islam. They might not be intended that way, but it is notoriously difficultt to make your full intention clear.

Mostly it sounds like someone had a dream about something bad happening on the 18th, and automatically it is associated with Ramadan and terroism. What???

How can we ever bridge the divide between the Muslim and non-Muslim world with this kind of stuff?

This is a multicultural, international board. Be kind and generous and broadminded toward your fellow human beings.

Sorry for my language and any typos, but I’m furious and sick of this.

Milo – at 12:40

That should read: “They might not be intended that way, but it is notoriously difficultt to make your full intention clear in email and intenet forum postings.”

Watching in Texas – at 12:56

Milo - in defense of “are we there yet”’s post about Ramadan - it sounded purely informational to me, just tying in the date in JWB’s dream with a corresponding date. Just my humble opinion, of course, but I did not read anything inflammatory or insulting into the above postings.

Newsie – at 13:05

Watching in Texas. Well said. It didn’t sound inflamatory to me either. JWB had a date and when asked if he was aware of the significance of said date, Are we there yet gave him a relatively academic reply.

Milo – at 13:35

Yeah, I did say the post “might not have been intended that way.” I apologize to Are We There Yet and anyone else if I hurt their feelings with my rant. Might have stung, I’m sure.

But I get sick of Islam being associated so quickly with terrorism. Often it seems everything about Islam leads directly to discussion of terrorism. It just seems automatic. It’s wrong. I’m sure it’s insulting to Muslims (though I’m sure most of them are about as sick of Islamic terrorists as everyone else is, partly because they get clumped in with them in some people’s minds).

Besides, as I understand it, the date of the Laylat al-Qadr is uncertain. Most Muslims celebrate several nights. Shi’as say the 23d, not the 27th night of Ramadan is most important.

Green Mom – at 13:38

Regarding all the planes near Crawford- Is it possible G.W. is planning a huge fundraiser? Or, perhaps a mass evacuation of Republicans in next months election? ;-)

Ok, I’m gonna admit that my ppf factor is pretty high right now(472). I’m not sure if I want to just have a massive panic attack and get it over with, or dissolve in a big burst of tears and go to bed and pull the covers over my head. But I will also say that currently I am dealing with a co-worker whom I think, in all seriousness, is unstable and latley has been behaving in a threatening way-I don’t know what to do about this situation, apparently management is aware and is unwilling/unable to do anything. (yuck) Trying to balance homeschooling kids in the day time/working evenings is stressful too. Two weeks ago I had a frount end collision that completely distroyed my car-fortuantly, we all escaped with just bruises and shakes-gotta love those Volvos!I am now driving a car that is-no joke, 25 years old and being held together with baling wire and BONDO.

And earlier this week my FIL calls to say-turn on the news terrorists have just attacked NYC again-of course it was “only” an accident. The Maryland Event was just about enough to send me completly over the edge.

So, I want to apologise if I have sounded doom and gloomy, stressed, panicy, paranoid, grouchy and just generally negative latley. I’ll get a grip, but it might take afew days.

Islam needs to clean it’s OWN house with a reformation, before you go spouting off here about how bigoted we all are here.

And what’s wrong with bigoted ? It wasn’t 63 year old Protestant grandmothers from Iowa that hijacked airliners and flew them into buildings.

I don’t see a huge hue and cry in Dearborn over atrocities commited in the name of Islam to date.

I saw dancing in the street of a city in my OWN country on 9–11, and can only assume the majority agreed with the terror act.

Silence implies consent.

Oremus – at 14:06

The Haj is a concern because it brings people from far away and concentrates them really close together (people get trampled there each year). Indonesia being predominantly Muslim would be expected to have a sizeable representation at the Haj.

The nightmare would be a pilgrim with a H2H strain infecting thousands as they march around the meteor (I forget what they call it), and then they all return to their home countries to rapidly spread the virus.

Oremus – at 14:07

Should be meteorite. A meteor is still in space.

I know what you mean. I finally had to just cut back on some prep purchases I was ready to make. It was really hard to priortize and let some things wait for now. I didn’t like it one bit. (I want all my prep items and I want them all now!!!) OK, fit over. But we can only do so much and we weren’t prepping at this time last year, so juggling it all is a new experience. Still, it just doesn’t feel like a good time to slow down on the preps:(

Dennis in Colorado – at 14:21

Should also be “hajj.” The structure at the center of the hajj is the kaabal. In one corner of the kaabal is the Rukn-al-Aswad, which may be a meteorite.

Pixie – at 14:31

Watching in Texas – at 14:58

Milo - even though I was not personally involved in “your rant”:-), I for one, do appreciate your apology.

Yes, it is difficult to always infer the correct meaning in a post. And, some people are more sensitive to certain issues than others and we do need to be careful not to offend someone of another faith or ethnicity. My children are adopted and one of them is Hispanic. I live in Texas. Not all Hispanics are illegal immigrants. And it is wrong to assume that they are, but trust me - it happens. So, as her mother, and as a Catholic living in a very Protestant area - I have learned a lot about prejudice. But I truly did not see anything negative that was posted, however, if I was Muslim - I might have looked at things differently.

Green Mom - bless your heart! Hope things improve in your world:-)

For the record, and to prove that I do actually remember what thread I am on;-), I think that I am holding steady at a 5, waiting for Okieman to provide more information on Papau New Guinea, and really hoping that the information he provides sends me down to a 2 very soon, and not up to an 8 or 9.

I can see Milo’s point of view.

I have made knee jerk assumptions about “events” and Muslims when I first heard something on the news, only to catch myself and realize the it is a small percentage of people who are causing all the trouble. Like any group, anywhere in the world.

Personally I think all the “houses” need to clean up their acts, before imposing their wills on others. Kind of like if everyone took care of their OWN trash (including dog poop) in a proper way there wouldn’t be any litter.

My PPF is still down to a four.five…from eight. I am ready if it happens and will be…more ready…readier?…if it happens down the road. Moving forward everyday.

Hey, there, this is supposed to be a discussion about personal pucker factor. Anticipation, fear, trepidation, and such. However, there are a lot of people on Flu Wikie with very strong feelings on a lot of subjects— they find it hard to remain open and impartial.

My recent observation of all the contention here on Flu Wikie raises my PPF up to 10. Here is my reasoning. If the most enlightened people on the planet (Flu Wikians) can find cause to bicker online, there is just no hope that disparate cultures can ever live harmoniously on this planet.

Please find a way to disagree politely, yet coexist.

I use the anti bacterial wipes our grocery store provide to wipe down the carts, use more sanitizer in the car from groceries, wash our hands when we get home, wipe down the steering wheel, door handles, have daughter wash her hands when she gets home from school. So the only conclusion I can come to, is I must be walking into an area after someone has coughted or sneezed. I am very upset at the moment. Heavens it’s going to be a long winter! “waiting for Okieman to provide more information on Papau New Guinea”

Wish I could provide more information, but there are only two on-line newspapers in Papua New Guinea and it looks like we will have to wait until Monday. I have been checking these newspapers every evening for months. Pop in, look around, move on. The only time I can remember they have not been up-dated has been during a national holiday they had. Now, the day that The National reports the 7 deaths from a flu-like disease back in the East Highland province is the same day that the Post Courier does not update their on-line news site. What’s up with that? (They do not have a regular edition on the weekends, except the Post Courier has a short abbreviated weekend edition.) Anyway, we gotta wait and see what develops Monday. If something bad is firing up in the highlands it could be a few days before we hear anything more. I just don’t know.

My ppf? I have held steady at a 7 for a long time. H5N1 would have to disappear to cause me to become a 1, 2 or 3. Just my interpretation of the ppf system. I think there are at least two different interpretations out there. I am at an 8 right now, also waiting for me to find more info about Papua New Guinea :-) Hope for the best, prepare for the rest.

I just find it getting worse every year. I’m so tired of getting the crud every fall/winter. They may be mild, but boy they sure make a person fell horrible. flu shots are scheduled for next week, am I to get one anyway if I’m full blown sick? Hubby is having back surgery next month, and I just can’t be run down. I had thought about the gloves, and felt stupid until I saw a man at the grocery store with a pair on. so, I had a talk with myself, and yes, I am tired of worrying how people would look at me, what would they think, avoid me,ect. I had a full chech up this summer, so I don’t have anything seriously wrong with me that I would keep getting sick. Daughter’s coughting a lot, it’s back to the doctor. And of course my business exposes me to families and their children, which doesn’t help. Wow-didn’t mean to do this. there is enough going on. (I can see everyone running for he hills.) I was bummed because my bags of mulch didn’t go as far as I wanted in the garden — I have NO problems when that is my current worry. My PPF was 8 to 9 but the sun keeps shining and I am currently lulled into a sunkissed 4

crfullmoon – at 18:22

Well, I feel kinda ill just now, but that’s because I read a comment by M. Randolph Kruger on Effect Measure (that I’m afraid is accurate; about tptb expecting a bad pandemic and everything to fall apart after a month)(no surprise; my postal carrier and I agreed “after a fortnight”, last year.)

But, I still don’t have everything done I should around here; combination of procrastinating, and, getting stuff printed out and trying to get more of my community and “stakeholders” to prep before it is too late. I should make my own top-10 list (by this point, it’s all the sort of stuff that makes doing your taxes or cleaning the catbox fun and simple by comparison) and try to get it all done, so I will be ready to SIP. No one else is going to to my stuff for me; I just wish the people I see around me had been getting told the science of what’s been going on this past year, so they won’t get blindsided.

History Lover – at 18:51

Green Mom - You’re not paranoid or grouchy or negative. You really have been going through a hard time. My prescription - two chocolate bars, a glass of wine, and a great escapist book. I prefer Lilian Jackson Braun.

Watching in Texas - I’m a blue-eyed blonde. My husband is Mexican-American, and all our four children are dark-eyed, dark-haired beauties. When my middle son was four-years-old, a classmate brought him to tears by telling him that I couldn’t possibly be his Mom. So I can sympathize. Even pre-schoolers can have preconceived judgments!

Okay, back on topic. I was at a 6, but now that I’m almost prepped for three months, I’m down to a five. But then sometimes I look at all the groceries and batteries and toilet paper that I’ve stocked, and I tell myself I’m crazy. What will I do with all this stuff? This isn’t really going to happen, is it? I’ve wasted all this money! Then my PPF returns to a six. As my grandmother would say, you can’t win for losing.

Green Mom – at 19:16

Cottontop- I think you can get a flu shot as long as your not running a fever. My family and I went through a spell a couple of years ago where we were just sick all the time. Our allergist suggested irrigating sinus passages with warm saline solution (you can mix your own, just salt and water) my dh does this religously every morning, I do it in winter or when I feel “coldish” It has really cut down on our illnesses. Dh still gets an occasion sinus infection, but with much less severity and way fewer infections. My son has an immune disorder-he had mono three years in a row, so I pulled him and his sister out of public school and THAT really cut back on our illness-in fact, neither child has had even a cold since last year. Stress can lower your resistance as well.

Edna Mode- my husband is also a therapist! He’s been very concerned about the work situation. I’m drafting a letter this weekend to put my concerns IN WRITING to management. We’ll see what happens, but I’ll finish this project first of Dec. Then I’ll probably quit if the situation is not resolved in some way. Meanwhile, I’ve arranged to do some work at home away from the craziness.

Tom DMV-It would make me SO happy if we all thought the flu would hold off until after the holidays-I for one would be in much better prep situation-any predictions?

My PPF is currently running at a 3. I feel like we dodged the bullet over the Spring/Summer, thanks to all the fowl culls in AI hotspots. I realize H2H2H could happen at any time, but I don’t perceive it as being a simple feat.

Mind you, if it did go H2H2H and turned into the real deal, I’m very concerned about just-in-time production and supply turning into an incredible mess. I really don’t see how an immense disaster can be avoided there.

cottontop – at 19:44

green Mom-

a huge hug. That’s for… well just thanks. I WILL try the saline solution, since my sinuses are the biggest problem, even when I’m not sick. Knowing my luck I’ll end up drowning myself with the mister! Amen to the stress factor.

History Lover- First- can you write me one of those perscriptions? Second- I was raised a Texan, and as one texan to another, you understan about the North/south thing still being prevalant in elderly people. well, I’m a green-eye blonde, 4′10, and my husband is 6′4″ born and bred a yankee. Well, you can imagine the rukus it caused when my family, included extened, cusions, ect., found out I was marrying a yankee. OMG! I could not understand what the big deal was, and still don’t. It’s never been a issue with my family, but that inital response, “He’s from where? A Yankee?” Something so simple minded and stupid, still remains. My 1 st cousin is mexican/american, 3 ys. younger than me, and we grew up together. His life was made miserable because of his mixed heritage. He’s “growd” up, family of his own, and one of the best people your’ll ever meet. He travels alot, and every know and then he’ll be close enough to Syracuse and will swing by and spend the night with us. I learned early in life that judgeing people because they are challenged in someway, color, creed, ect., just kept you angery inside, all the time. I’ve had my share of bullying from idiots in school because of my height. so I learned that it is nowheresville. If I am prejudice, it’s against these idiots who insist on spreading prejudice!

My PPF went down half a point to 3.5 today. I read an AI document online that was issued by the regional health department for the area I live in, covering 13 counties. They seem to be taking the threat of a pandemic seriously and have made some solid preparations. No plan is ideal but it sounds as though they’re on the right track. What made my PPF drop and surprised the heck out of me was a link to the Personal Preparedness page here at the Wiki. Knowing that someone in local public health is familiar with what FluWiki offers and recommends reading it makes me feel a bit more confident. The document can be found at http://tinyurl.com/ygkwgb. It’s a PDF file but is only 3 pages and shouldn’t take long to load on slower computers.

Are you referring to the “Mystery disease kills 8 in Nepal” story? If so, note that the story is ‘date-lined’ Kathmandu but the location of the disease is “a remote village” and not a large city.
I also note that the description of the disease comes from “local people” and not healthcare workers. The doctor who offered the opinion that it “could be a viral disease” was not in the affected village, but 80 km away. There is no indication that he has seen any of those who were affected. Also, with 400 affected and eight deaths, the mystery disease doesn’t have a very high CFR.

The weekend before 9/11 I did some odd preps that I had put off for years, and I told my brother that something big might be going to happen, maybe a terrorist attack. Well, I don’t know if it is the brisk Fall weather or what, but I am doing some odd preps (final sort of preps that I had not really envisioned doing before), an odd sort of compulsion sort of thing, just like what I did before 9/11. No fear or anxiety as prior to 9/11, just burrowing in and feeling exactly the same way.

I have not felt this way since that week before 9/11.

We all watch everything in the news so closely, what other causes would drop a person so quickly—and so far; What we know- eight have died but a total of 400 sick? 4 were children. We don’t know the ages of the poor victims or their general health. Water contamination, food poisening?

My PPF hasn’t raised but its in watchful mode.

Oremus, would it fair to assume that you don’t live in a coastal city aswell?

Medical Maven – at 11:13 Intuition. Underrated. I also follow certain science sites - NewScientist, LiveScience, ScienceDaily, EurekAlert RealClimate, as well as SOHO and USGS Earthquake daily reports (SOHO is my homepage) There’s a lot going on. Obsessed about “White Buffalo” years ago. {There’s another (male) here BTW.} Oldest kid returned from living in So. CA, and found mom in a ‘muddle’. Then came 911 and I was understood, fully, but briefly.

It’s coming. Trust your gut.

I’m not sure of my PPF…I’ve never been good at applying a scale to my feelings. :) I do feel antsy and anxious, more so now than the last few months. I just this morning spent big bucks to buy enough hay for my cows and horses for about the next six months. Now my “meat” will be there when I need it. The lack of news regarding bird flu in the news recently has only heightened my sense of foreboding for some reason. No explanation for that.

Wolf at 12:11-I got a laugh when I read your “favorites”, almost total convergence with mine. Who knows? But I started yesterday in earnest with these odd final preps, and this bit of news about Nepal pops up this morning. Could be noithing, could be everything.

But that 9/11 thng was totally unique for me, the compulsive preps immediately beforehand and then the only prediction that I have ever made to my brother or to anybodyelse like that.

Shoot…guess I’m going to have to go to nine.

Actually Princeton has been running a “community mind” physics/mathmatics experiment since before 9–11 and some of the results are pretty startling on event pre-cognition.

Hey everyone…someone started the next thread cuz this one is so long. Let’s start posting over there so we can all “be on the same page.” I don’t want to miss anything!

Hope your helth is better, Tom DVM.

Did you give in and let fluwikians ship you preps? ;-)

(Why am I at the keyboard when I have things to cross off my list??) (Waving hi virtually at all.) Actually ran into a live person the other day who actually was looking at Flu Wiki already (not quite as good as seeing y’all would have been, but a relief to look someone in the eye who “gets it”).

Medical Maven – at 12:15 Haven’t reached that ‘compulsive’ stage yet - but know what you’re talking about. There’s a rhythm that I can’t explain. I’ll follow it. BTW-I ‘ve never regretted my pre-911 weirdness. Many around me were batshit-crazy. My pre 911 mindset kept me quite calm.

crfullmoon Thanks to the medical advice of anon 22, NS1, JV and Many Cats: and the medical and spiritual advice etc….of MA in VA, I am feeling a little better. Thanks for asking.

I have had a number of tests and will be seeing the doctor for a follow-up this week…but the answer for me seems to be clear…a physical and spiritual rebuild of my engine systems. Although I don’t want to give up sugar, caffiene and white flour…I guess I will have to although I was hoping I could somehow sidestep the issue…just like a human!! /:0)

Tom DVM – at 12:52

AS far as the preps go…I am afraid I still have a failing grade.

Many Cats – at 13:06

Tom DVM: If you look at the “Surviving Winter Without Power” thread, you will see that my storm preps consisted of a bag of Doritos and a pack of Suzy Q’s (like a chocolate Hostess Twinkie, but infinitely more decadent). You are not alone in modern day food preferences. At least SIP will do your adrenals some good. We must all try to eat healthy from now on (just ignore the 3-musketeers bar in my hand, I have no idea where that came from…) Just make sure when you prep. that you don’t buy only sugar, white flour and caffiene-containing products. :)

…And the dead leaves lie huddled and still No longer blown hither and thither The last lone aster is gone The flowers of the witch hazel wither; The heart is still aching to seek, But the feet question “Whither”? Was it ever less than a treason To go with the drift of things, To yield with a grace to reason, And bow and accept the end Of a love or a season?

Wolf at 13:07-The whole body of poetry in the few years prior to World War I was almost achingly prescient. “The Great War and Modern Memory” by Paul Fussel is a great book with that theme. It was published in 1976 I believe. And it won one or two literary awards.
