Above and beyond real-time information gathering and message dissemination, the social and community qualities of new media can advance health and risk communication by changing how we understand our problems and how we construct our solutions. News groups, chat rooms, and bulletin boards have been used for exchanging health information and as online support groups since the earliest days of the web. Today’s Web 2.0 tools that leverage and harness the “knowledge of the crowd” offer great potential for solving our most difficult public health problems and building and empowering communities of change. One great example is FluWiki, whose stated purpose is “to help local communities prepare for and perhaps cope with a possible influenza pandemic, [which is] a task previously ceded to local, state and national governmental public health agencies.”
Controlling and mitigating public health emergencies, especially those that are the size and scale of an influenza pandemic, will absolutely require the active engagement and participation of the public and all sectors of society. New media efforts to engage and galvanize the public like FluWiki, Green Hammer, and the Slidell Hurricane Damage Blog are critical to CDC’s ability to prepare for and respond to an influenza pandemic and to other possible public health emergencies.

neat, it sounds like someone at CDC looks at FluWiki.

Bird Guano – at 23:31

So a CDC representative needs to get their butt online here.

WooHoo ! An endorsement from the CDC ! That shows SOMEBODY is listening !

And you’re right---we DO need a CDC rep to chime in here !

I think I know what this is. Martin Cetron, who has recently been appointed to the WHO pandemic taskforce, was at the ethics seminar in DC. I went up to ask him about HCW absenteeism and stuff, and he seemed pretty familiar with what we write about. He looked like he was impressed with the kind of questions I asked him aka why do official figures pretend HCW absenteeism is going to be the same as other sectors etc. He wasn’t able to or was not prepared to (there were a lot of people around) admit their numbers do not reflect reality. I have a sense that a lot of people like him are intelligent good people who feel the way we do, but are just constrained by establishment. They might have decided, among other things, to make us legit since we can say things they can’t say!

anon_22 – at 06:28

Dem, We should put a link to this on our main page…

I think there is a recognition of the value of a “hive mind” that brings people of diverse backgrounds, experiance and education. That combined knowledge linked with people on the ground probably is/will be invaluable.

I agree though that on a site like Fluwiki folks can say what they want and speculate till the cows come home (and about where the cows have been and whether there was a government conspiracy to let the cows loose in the first place).

It is good to see this from CDC. It validates the belief that what we are doing here is worth the time and effort.

Since Fluwiki links to government web sites for pandemic flu, could we formally request that they link to FW? They might say no, but they might say yes. On the other hand, new FW users might be overwhelmed by the amount and dispersion of information. Anyone up for writing a FW on-line book(let), a la Dr. Woodson? It might take the “best of FW” and paste it together or be a little more time consuming and try for more continuity.

Anyone up for writing a FW on-line book(let), a la Dr. Woodson?

Please do! At least outline some content that should be there?

Good sentiments, but who will help the CDC cope ? This is not an isolated posting.

CDC’s ILLNESS MISDIAGNOSED - Screaming in pain.

“In her recent e-mails to the CDC leaders and staff Dr. Gerberding diagnosed the malady ailing the agency as a chronic autoimmune disease. Dr. Gerberding has obviously misdiagnosed the grave illness that has been ailing CDC. We are not suffering from an autoimmune disorder, but from the worst case of encephalomegaly or brain tumor. Malignant growth surrounding what used to be the working brain of the agency keeps swelling ever bigger at the detrimental expense of the body. As a brain tumor usually does, this one has first distorted lines of communication between the brain and the body, and than severely impaired cognitive abilities. That is why the head keeps saying that everything is just peachy, even though the rest of the body is squirming and screaming in pain.”

(Welcome any CDC, or former CDC, who care about Continuity of the People in a pandemic influenza year and beyond.)

anyone knows/recommends Green Hammer, and the Slidell Hurricane Damage Blog ?

Dr Dave – at 09:42

Infomass and Lugon, I do not know if my little essay would be of any use, but here is what I have:

The title of my essay is “Becoming Self-Sufficient for Six Months”. It is 17 pages long, single-spaced, block formatting, with 1″ margins. Most of the information is available online with a bit of research, but I have assembled it into several categories that I think will be helpful to my friends, relatives, and colleagues. It is by no means comprehensive, and some of my suggestions may seem controversial, but it is a really solid place for any neophyte to start understanding and prepping.

The topic headings indlude Introduction, The Pandemic Scenario, Food for Six Months, Household Supplies for Six Months, Disruption of Utilities and Public Services, Cooking Without Your Kitchen, Water, Emergency Power, Personal Protection Equipment, Additional Considerations for the Skeptic in You, The Next Six Months, Useful Internet Sites and Links, and Afterthoughts.

If you would care to peruse it and see if it could be useful as a download, I can send it to you as a Word dcoument or as a .pdf file. Just give me an address or two. I can do it today.

Snowhound1 – at 10:02

Dr. Dave, I would like to have a copy forwarded to me. Snowhound1 at aol.com

Sounds like what I need to give to a few friends who are in the beginnings of prepping.

Thanks in advance.

Dr Dave,

Send it to Dude to upload to our large file ftp server.

lugon – at 10:47

Dr Dave, yes please lugon at singtomeohmuse dot com. Ah, yes, or to Dode for the ftp server.

Bird Guano – at 11:33

Now we just have to hope that the infrastructure of the Wiki will survive a mention in something this mainstream.

How IS that move to a different forum software coming ???

Hurricane Alley RN – at 12:03

Dr. Dave, Would love to have a copy. Please send to gss052010@yahoo.com — Thank you. gina

Grace RN – at 12:03

Congrats-again to Melanie, Dem, pogge and all those souls who embarked to a brave new ‘net’ world when they invented fluwikie, then did CPR and (financial) transfusions to keep it alive.

Still think a nomination for a Nobel is in order here.

Dr Dave-pls send me a copy as well; puub at comcast dot net. (R1?)

To any and all CDC-welcome, and a huge thank you.

Dr. Dave me too at Im.Workin.On.It@gmail.com when you get a chance. THANKS!!

BeWellat 13:51

Dr.Dave - please send it to me: MayAllBeWell@gmail.com. I am working on a website (small, insignificant) with a compendium - very partial and biased - of things that have worked for me or that I found in my studies. Ayurvedic, natural, vegetarian information. Do I have your permission to use any of your material? (assuming I like it which I am sure I will.)

anonymous – at 13:58

Me too. lilly-lily @ hotmail.com. I pass it around to people I am targeting as being influential in my area.

lugon – at 14:06

Dr Dave - received - thanks!

CDC - nice to be on the same boat - we all were anyway! :-)

PBQ – at 14:07

Me too please. 2zfashion at cox dot net

Jane – at 14:15

lugon, will this document be downloadable now that you have it? Please post a link, if you can. Thanks!

Dr Dave – at 14:20

Jane,

I have sent Dude and Lugon a .pdf version if it; however, with 17 pages of single-spaced text to sift through, I’m sure they will need some time to assess the accuracy and suitability of what I have written. prior to making any posting decision.

INFOMASS – at 14:58

If Dr. Dave’s piece is useful for new FW members, is there any way to decide in some group what else (if anything) should be included? I had in mind something more extensive than what the government/WHO websites have in terms of strategies for coping as well as a non-shrill outlining of possible scenarios from “bad regular flu year” to “end of the world as we know it.” I do not think the government is being nearly proactive enough. This morning I talked with a FEMA person who was well stocked himself and had a gun, but thought that the public could not handle and would not act on any “alarming” panflu information. Given that most of us believe “it” will happen and we should be prepared, it is very discouraging that so little is being raised in this political campaign about the issue. (Let alone that the government is giving so little warning, or the main stream media for that matter.) I do hope some version of Dr. Dave’s paper is posted on FW.

DemFromCTat 15:10

dr. Dave’s paper eventually should be linked from this page. He tried to send it to me but I never got it. ;-(

Dr Dave – at 15:18

DemFromCT: I’m sorry you did not receive it. The version that Duke and Lugon have is a substantial revision from the one I tried to send you. They can send you the lastest in .pdf format or I can give it another try.

Anon_451 – at 16:03

As I have said before, TPTB do visit this site often. Most times to get an update on what is happening, sometimes for them selves and sometimes to see what their plans have missed or left out. Flu Wikie is getting a very good rep.

naomi – at 16:34

Dr Dave I would very much like to have a copy. Please send to Ncs83056@aol.com TIA, :>}

Science Teacher – at 17:00

PFAW week may have really had an impact. It was linked to by many, many blogs. It would be hard for Jay Bernhardt to miss since he is a fellow blogger. Of couse he probably read here long before that.

econ101 – at 17:20

Dr Dave..plz send to me at bug4kk@yahoo.com thx so much

econ101 – at 17:23

why doesn’t someone start a thread titled “CDC complaints” That way anyone from the CDC could go directly to that thread and see are concerns………..I’m not sure how to start a thread…TY

Commonground – at 18:19

If anyone from CDC has any ways to get our toggletext back or any translation sites for Indonesia, I sure would love to hear from you! Welcome All!!

anonymous – at 19:19

Dr. Dave:

Would love to encourage family. Please send to dvsilk@wctel.net

Many thanks.

Please send me a Word copy at wturner3 at gmail dot com.

Looking forward to seeing it. Thanks…

Grace RN – at 21:07

Now that I have contacts with the key personnel at our county’s board of health, I email them anything from the wiki I think they may find interesting/useful.

Off topic-I just found our local cable provider-Comcast-has a community bulletin board that offers each township 5 hours of free space a week. It’s for airing text info on meetings etc and video of township meetings.

If I can get our township officicals to hand over 20–30 minutes per week of their time, can get a video made of the NJ state DOHSS power point slide show, with narration, on there for viewing. It’s free, educates alot of people along the way (ie use the local high school video studio/students to make the video) and gets some public exposure.

Every little bit helps.

CDC recognises the blogosphere has some information. The comments are not bad either :)

Maybe it’s better to bring the conversation here? Not sure.
