The announcement of Glaxo bird flu vaccine works in trial

http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/wireStory?id=2236726

___________________________________________________________________________ I suspect if this holds up, Glaxo could be up for a nobel

Hi Everyone,

Probably not new to many, but these are some of my favorites:

News Now http://tinyurl.com/92prv

MSNBC http://tinyurl.com/mjzdg

ABC News http://tinyurl.com/jswos

Reuters http://tinyurl.com/jhjko

ANON-YYZ – at 17:49

moeb,

I don’t know what your intentions are with this thread, but it already confuses me.

Between your first post and the second post, the thread already changed direction.

I hope this doesn’t become one of those random thought chats.

Is this the “don’t worry, problem will be solved” calming thread?

Or is this an example of Top Ten News Links?

IMO, news should go to the news thread.

Old news = distraction.

anonymous – at 17:57

Super easy: exercise your personal choice and don’t click on this thread. Nothing confusing about it - crystal clear.

moeb – at 18:32

gosh, gee, darn… all I really want is those bookmarks you all are hoarding. you know what I mean. sure are a lot of bitchy people on this site lately.. hope ya all get a grip pretty soon an no I don’t mean “la grippe”

Leo7 – at 18:57

Moeb: I don’t mind sharing. In fact it’s smart because this way you surf a varity sites you might normally go to. Good thread. Three of mine are medical sites with good info.

Moeb: Sorry should’ve re-read my comments before posting, but you get the intention.

Melanie – at 19:00

This shouldn’t be a problem thread. All of us read multiple sources. A favorite of mine is Crof’s place.

Melanie – at 19:04

I also like Dr. Bob Gleeson’s place because he just doesn’t get excited. He’s a calm voice.

DennisCat 19:06

I “assume” that you want what news sources we like.

The NewsNow link is my #1- it is simple, with just news links and times.

http://tinyurl.com/8so74

There is a BBC news link:

http://tinyurl.com/ctvw9

I use google and altavista “news” searches and then click on sort by date. The altavista seems to update their search engine entries a little faster than google.( by a few minutes). I normally search on H5N1 when I use their news searches.

From the science side: http://www.scidev.net/

There is also: http://www.birdflubreakingnews.com/

It is OK but it has the problem of “framing” the the links which gives very long URL’s that sometimes get “messed up”.

This one is specific to Thailand: http://tinyurl.com/zrptw It gives a daily summary of what the health department in Thailand is seeing. like today it has “ 527 suspect cases reported, waiting for laboratory results” That is a lot of cases. I can get that information almost no where else.

There are also the government type sources for news.

WHO is “old news” but I just about need to include it in my top ten just for confirmation. http://tinyurl.com/3yzxe

and CDC http://www.cdc.gov/flu/avian/

and FAO http://tinyurl.com/coyc7

and OIE http://www.oie.int/eng/en_index.htm

and from the health side: Center for Infectious Disease http://tinyurl.com/z6pe4

So those are some of my news sources if you like to scan your own. If I had to pick just one it would be NewsNow.

Somewhere in the old old post, Mama and I exchanged news sources. But these should get you started.

Leo7 – at 19:22

Dan, Dennis C,. I’ve bookmarked the news now site. It really is good.

DennisCat 19:47

Leo7 – at 19:22 Yes, it does about what most people want in a news “pointer”. (except for “using blind links”). It normally updates every 5–10 minutes but every now and then (espeically around midnight EST) it seems to be “slow”. The thing I like about it is the sort by time.

Between NewsNow and altavesta news search (by date) you can get almost all the current news.

there are some “specialty” sites as well. here is a med one: http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/sections/birdflu/

voice of america- sometimes interesting on things but only sometimes. http://www.voanews.com/english/avian_flu.cfm

for those that like maps and all kinds of emergency news items: http://hisz.rsoe.hu/alertmap/woalert.php?lang=eng

I should state my agreement of the Doctor Bob site (above). He once posted here, but I haven’t seen him for a few months now. If I had to pick a “flag in the wind” to judge things, it would likely be Bob. Not exactly news, but an agreeable point of view and a nice guy.

And here is another but not exactly up to the minute but OK to review when you have been away for a few days. http://tinyurl.com/f2kge

Melanie – at 19:50

CIDRAP remains the gold standard, but they are a little slow on the news.

DennisCat 19:54

Regional news: here is an Indian paper: (the Hindu) http://tinyurl.com/efzh3 This a current article but you use their search for others. Nothing going on much in India now that it is decleared “bird flu free”. But when there is, you can find stuff there.

Reuters is good. If you want EU type news it is best to use the Reuter’s UK. for example about the owls in the zoo with H5N1 today: http://tinyurl.com/z4jvr Again just use there search for “H5N1” to get current items.

AnnieBat 21:11

I like to use ProMed mail as well, plus it gives a chance to see what else is rearing its head in the world.

The link http://tinyurl.com/bj5rx

Also, http://www.hewsweb.org/avian_flu/

(That was a short link so I posted it direct.) The early warning link (hewsweb) is a bit slow with the latest news but it is a good site.

I don’t have alot of time to surf for news and info about BF. Usually, the news that is current winds up here within 24 hours or less. The fluwikie reviewers shred it for skimming purposes. If something really interests me, I may google-news it. I used to read Effect measure alot for news and commentary-blogstyle, but they became so anti-Christian in their Sunday segments, I rarely go there anymore.

thank you, I’ve incorporated your suggestions into my bird flu links page http://hereincabo.com/files/misc/birdflu.html please feel free to suggest any others that ought to be there

Melanie – at 17:51

Ange D,

The reveres aren’t anti-Christian, they are anti all religion. They are equal opportunity atheists.

Bronco Bill – at 18:00

Okay…what is BTTT?

DennisCat 18:22

back to the top - like bump

Bronco Bill – at 18:47

Thanks, DennisC. I kept thinking it was Been There, Tried That. But I couldn’t fit it to any posts! :)

Ange D – at 22:47

Melanie at 17:51 . . . lol! well said. Unfortunately, I’ve lost alot of interest in reading their blog due to their extreme opinions regarding Christianity. It just breeds more hatred and bigotry. Doesn’t make the situation better. It’s unfortunate because their writing is brilliant and “the voice” of Revere is quite eloquent and often speaks for those who cannot speak for themselves.

DennisCat 23:10

another news site: a reuters next day type items. THey have not yet checked the sources.

here are the news headlines that will be in tomorrows papers: (notice the Indo papers will be talking about the outbreak in N Sumatra)

The Reveres produce an excellent site. I don’t always agree with them either in matters of politics or religion…but these are the famous trigger subjects for almost everyone. Just ignore the stuff you do’t agree with. Their opinions on these subjects don’t change their “eloquence” as you put it on issues of public health and especially bird flu. It’s a baby and bath water situation. Science and religion have always had a challenging relationship. These are scientists and astute observors worth heeding in this respect.
