I’m just about to start watching a movie titled 1918 about how a texan family and town coped with the Pandemic. It was made in 1985 and is being shown on SUNTV at 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm MST. I’ll let you know if I learn anything.

Your mention of the movie “1918″ rang a bell with me. Many years ago had seen on PBS a series of films called “The Texas Trilogy”, written by screenwriter Horton Foote, he of Academy Award fame, some of his work was “To Kill a Mockingbird”, “Tender Mercies”, and “The Trip to Bountiful”. Mr Foote passed on this year.

The three movies are, in order, “The Courtship”, “Valentines Day”, and of course, “1918″ They star his actress daughter Hallie Foote, William Converse-Roberts, Amanda Plummer in one, and in the last two, a young Matthew Broderick. They are beautifully done movies, low key, outstanding acting. I highly recommend them. Recently purchased them myself, think they were from Amazon.com. I was struck then and still am amazed now how realistic and down to earth the ensemble of actors were. Hope you enjoy 1918 and manage to see the others.

Yes Nautical Man that is indeed the movie I just watched. I haven’t seen a movie like that in a long time. For those that haven’t seen it the focus is on WW1 and the “flu”. The towns people and the family it focused on are really unaware of the seriousness of the flu until suddenly they have several deaths. You won’t get a lot of detail about the flu because the movie presents it as something that little was known about and to provide details would have detracted from the theme. You will see the stoic nature of the people and how they “just get on with it”. Fear comes and goes but panic never ensued. It does allow one to see that most do come out the other side, but not without loss. It reminds me of the old phonograph where music is one dimensional until “stereo” was invented. It doesn’t seem to have much depth but in fact the depth is found from within the actors as they cope. Some will enjoy it, others will be left feeling more was needed, which was exactly the point.
