a short video:

Why Don’t We Do It In Our Sleeves? http://www.mass.gov/dph/cdc/epii/flu/flupublic.htm

This video was designed to encourage people to cough and sneeze according to the infection control guidelines put forth by the Center for Disease Control. It is aimed at the common citizen. Its message is serious, but it is presented with humor in such a way that it engages the viewer’s attention for a full five minutes while the message is repeated in interesting new ways. It can be enjoyed by individuals, but it is even more fun to watch in groups, resulting in community reinforcement. It has been used in hospitals and schools with great success. It actually makes people change the way they cough and sneeze. >>

lately i’ve been hearing general preparedness infomercials on the radio. that’s great! the one i heard on Monday started, “Are you prepared? If you ask to ask ‘for what?’, then you’re not prepared.”… it goes on to mention potential disasters, including pandemic, the importance of establishing a family plan, having certain supplies at home, etc.

a step in the right direction!

hi Posie, thanks for the post. .You always find these mass things I miss! I sent this to an number of friends, family, and aquaintences via email just now, along with brief update of potential pandemic situation, and why people might want to get into better hygenic habits now instead of waiting, especially if they have kids (ie train kids in these good habits). I then listed them, the above cough/sneeze into your sleeve as well as more frequent hand washing (especially after nose blowing/wiping kids nose…I work in people’s homes…I notice in homes MAJORITY of people get lazy and do not wash hands after nose blowing….yuck). I also told them something I do, which is keep hand sanitizer at my front door and in car and use it upon entering.

It was big risk for me to send this to these people. The majority are in a group I belong to. I have mentioned prepping to a few and sent out feelers and absolutely NONE OF THEM, all middle class educated people with kids (presumably having the resources education motivation therefore tho of course not certain) have done a thing..

I feel like I stuck my neck out, came out of the closet, etc…scary. But necessary. I feel I have done my duty by them. IF any express an iota of interest I will engage in further conversation. hope this doesn’t digress the thread.

anyway, I watched the video…it was pretty silly/amusing. I have always coughed in my sleeve, I think maybe my mother taught me to..so she was ahead of her time hygene wise. The microbiologist shrudders in me when I see people sneeze into their hands at touch things.

there is actually another thread about hand hygene etcI now remember..so I’ll stop for now.
