Forum: Welcome Back

pogge – at 13:01

Hoping this goes through.

Northstar – at 13:02

Yep, did, pogge. Hiya!

pogge – at 13:02

OK, we seem to be functional again. The server was never actually down, it just wouldn’t serve content. So after checking several other possibilities, I updated my backups and rebooted the sucker. Seems to be fine now. (And by the way, the error log didn’t tell me a durn thing. I swear this is all still more black art than science.)

Northstar – at 13:05

Well, back to your icauldrons, then! (G)

Milo – at 13:06

Thanks pogge! Nice to see those swans again.

LauraBat 13:07

Funny how I get a little flutter in my stomach whenever I can’t get on!

Thanks for all the hard work!

anon_22 – at 13:15

Thank you pogge!

Average Concerned Mom – at 13:15

That was the longest I’ve been off the wiki in a week.

Commonground – at 13:19

phew

pogge – at 13:23

phew

My sentiments exactly.

NJ Jeeper – at 13:26

Scary when I can not get on here. Don’t do that please.

worrywart – at 13:38

Gee-thought the ceiling had fallen in!-wondered how bad the news could be if there are so many posters on here early in the morning;-) Glad to have everything back to normal.

JWB – at 13:53

Maxed FWWS. Hyperventilated! Shakes! Whew!

(Flu Wiki Withdrawal Syndrome)

Bronco Bill – at 13:56

Thanks pogge! Good work. For those that get butterflies when the Forum goes down, try going to www.fluwikie.com (the main wiki server). If it’s up, then it’s not the end of the world…just means a little piece of it broke off! ;-)

KimTat 13:56

Most evenings I run into problems getting on and after a while i give up and go do something else but I would have worried had I not been able to get on this afternoon.

I’m-workin’-on-it – at 13:56

Hey guys, thanks for fixing things….I hope it wasn’t too bad for you….we really appreciate everything you do — black magic or otherwise!

Monotreme – at 14:00

Thanks pogge.

mj – at 14:10

I checked main forum and the swan was still there, so I just waited. Don’t forget that incantation you did, in case you need it again. Glad to see the forum back. It keeps my PPF down when it’s here, and skyrockets it when it’s not. Great job folks.

LMWatBullRunat 14:16

Thanks, Pogge. Good job. I’m on the road and until I got main wiki site loaded I seriously thought about bugging out to go home……Once the main site loaded I figured it was a server issue with the forum, but I am relieved to see things up again.

Jane – at 14:39

Thanks,Pogge! I checked Flutrackers, and there didn’t seem to be any alarm there. Didn’t think of the main FW. Stomach flutters gone now. :)

cottontop – at 14:56

OMG!!! What a relief! Went into distress mode. Didn’t know what was going on. Other site was not helpful. So went with fam to get pumpkins and lunch. Mad race between daughter and I for phone and phoneline just now.

Glad to see/hear everything is o.k. THANKS POGGE!!!!!!!!!!! (I’ll send you some krispy cream donughts)

JWB – at 15:53

The Karo cluster, the Maryland Event, and now this. Good mental testing exercises so far. Can I please have a glimpse of what’s next?

cottontop – at 16:03

This is a good excerise for everyone checking in as well. Think I can do without the testing excerises though. My ole heart can’t take this!

Green Mom – at 16:25

Hi guys! Glad we’re all back. I’m rather pleased with myself for NOT getting too nervous-I went to the main wiki and it was there, no blackbordered notice, swan still swimming so I figured was just a glitch. I was a little nervous about the cruise ship on the Ohio River-first headlines said something like Flu-like sysmptoms brings cruise to a halt-but its not our flu. Still a little worrisome though. Thanks so much Pogge! BTW-I use lots of curses, er, magical incantations with my computer….

Bronco Bill – at 17:07

Green Mom – at 16:25 --- BTW-I use lots of curses, er, magical incantations with my computer…

Heh…mine are ALL curses!!

DennisCat 17:10

just to let you know, the old fluwike (not 2) info (read only) was still available during the “outage”.

Bronco Bill – at 17:14

DennisC – at 17:10 --- Yup. That’s why I suggest that folks check out the Main Wiki before getting the jitters. Since they’re on seperate servers, the likelyhood of both going down at the same time is very remote…

And then again, even if a pandemic did begin, an increase in traffic wouldn’t shut down both servers right away…we’d have some notice.

On the fence and leaning – at 17:29

BB 17:14 Not disagreeing, don’t know enough to anyway, but on 9/11 internet usage shut down all of the news sites. I was overseas at the time and my only source of news was the TV dish. Of course, 9/11 was an almost instant event. A MSM announcement of a H5N1 (deadly type) found in the US would take a awhile to get everyone’s attention, I think.

cottontop – at 17:32

Did go to the Main Wiki. It was a relief to see it up, but still did not find any information as to what was going on. Felt very frustrated. Was looking for some kind of post from mods. saw nothing. unless I missed it.

Bronco Bill – at 20:29

On the fence and leaning – at 17:29 --- I remember CNN when 9/11 occurred. They had to bring up two more servers, exclusive to the WTC story, to feed the traffic they were getting.

cottontop – at 17:32 --- I think it was kind of a surprise to the Mods that the Forum went down. pogge got a small message on the Wiki main page as soon as he could, I think.

cottontop – at 20:39

does mods know what caused the “black out?”

Good to see the forum up again !

Just for information: there was a discussion on CE recently about the total cost of running a board using existing software and good bandwidth. It sounded extremely reasonable. I am very impressed with the speed at which CE comes up, and the interface is very elegant. I visualise the various subjects discussed on the FW in the separate “rooms” and in my opinion, it would not only look good but be functional for FW’s purpose. One last suggestion : I understand why many posters wish to remain anonymous, but why allow everyone to change their name everytime they post ?

Pixie – at 05:56

Anonymous because it is allowed = at 04:44

Yes, the software that both CE and FT use is incredibly cheap, and the hosting service is also very inexpensive (a very minimal cost). The VS Bulletin Board software can be put up and run even by a single individual for not more than a couple hundred dollars a year. Beyond that, I’m not knowledgable enough to comment on the strengths of the various platforms.

preppiechick – at 09:58

Not to add one more thing for the poor mods to do, BUT is there any way that a short message box, or something similar, could be added to the main wiki page to update the status on wiki2, if something happens, again? It seemed like fw was down longer for me than others, yesterday, and it was driving me crazy not knowing if it was my computer or what had happened. I was gone most of the weeend, and only had a short time to check in and not much time to poke around and figure out what was going on. A short note on fw2 would have saved a lot of indigestion!!!

crfullmoon – at 10:03

I did finally find a note (a page, being edited, to communicate on) yesterday, by checking Last 50 changes, preppiechick.

Green Mom – at 16:25 Hi guys! Glad we’re all back. I’m rather pleased with myself for NOT getting too nervous-I went to the main wiki and it was there, no blackbordered notice, swan still swimming so I figured was just a glitch.

Me, too.

I DID see the black lettered message on the main page (after trying to load the forum 3 different times I started looking around for answers —I’m slow) it was right above the red lined “CDC discussion of Fluwikie” info and the purple lined info on “current confirmed cases”. Maybe I just didn’t look closely the first time or maybe it wasn’t there till I tried to reload 3 times, — maybe it should be in all caps, or in blue or something to make it stand out more next time.

I’m just glad it was there at all — appreciate you taking the time to post it during your rush to get things back to normal.
