The PPF thread has gotten big. Could someone close it?

InKyat 13:05

I would still like to see pandemic flu flyers available for download somewhere on the Flu Wiki site (besides the Forum). I wouldn’t care whose flyers (existing or yet to be developed) just as long as people could print them or email them for use in raising public awareness. Any word yet on posting such?

InKyat 13:13

My concern regarding public awareness is personal. The Louisville paper hasn’t carried an article on bird flu since May 9, when “Fatal Contact” aired. At least that’s the last dedicated article a search turns up.

The Lexington paper’s most recent pandemic-related headline is “Study suggests way to kick-start protection against a flu pandemic.” It begins, “A unique study suggests there may be a way to kick-start people’s protection against bird flu just in case it triggers a worldwide outbreak years from now.”

It’s not as if coverage like that is going to get anybody to prep.

pogge – at 13:56

InKy:

If you’re looking for a good spot on the wiki to post links to those flyers, how about the Raising Awareness page? I’d thought about the main Resources page but it’s already pretty busy (and probably intimidating to work with for those who don’t have a lot of experience with the markup).

crfullmoon – at 14:15

How about adding it to the Handouts as well?

pogge – at 14:17

Good point. You can do both if you want. Redundancy isn’t necessarily a bad thing in this context.

InKyat 14:28

pogge - at 14:17, and crfullmoon - at 14:15:

I’ll look into how to do this. I’m still learning how Flu Wiki works :-), and I’ve only had time this week, during my fall break from school, to try to do anything meaningful. Thanks.

InKyat 15:01

Just one more question. The fastest way to link to all the flyers is to link to the flyers thread. Is it OK to do that, or should I link to my own flyers page instead at mindspinner.net and ask permission to post links to all the flyers there? Either way, I think we want one-stop flyer shopping.

DemFromCTat 15:08

it’ll load faster to go directly to your place.

InKyat 15:15

Thanks - I will ask permission of Rob T, WAprepper, and Jane to link to their work, too.

I have started a new Indonesia thread as the previous one was too long - and you are always telling us “Just do it!”. But, I wonder if the map at the top of the previous thread needs copying over and I would hate to try that!

Actually, I wonder if the maps should just be saved for the Summary thread or has the Map been regularly placed in the Discussion thread? You guys know the answer to this and many other questions .. ;-)

PS - it is sooo good to be back and feeling useful again!

laura in pa – at 01:43

what’s going on with “create new topic”?

Bronco Bill – at 05:50

laura in pa – at 01:43 --- It seems to be sort of a “spam magnet” or “spam catcher”. The Mods let it fill up with junk, then empty the trash a couple times a day.

laura in pa – at 09:20

very smart!

DemFromCTat 09:32

AnnieB, the maps are in the “Indonesia no comment” thread and on the Indonesia wiki page. Later, i’ll move the latest one only there.

gardner – at 09:34

On the map in the Indonesia thread. If it’s open for a vote, I’d vote for it not to be in the Indo thread, but just in the summary. That’s because I have a laptop with a small screen and a slow dial-up connection. I love the map, but it takes forever to load and causes a little sidescroll.

DemFromCTat 09:37

we can leave it out.

Dennis in Colorado – at 09:48

Can a mod please fix my link in the News thread (time stamped 0946)? TIA.

pogge – at 10:20

Done.

Commonground – at 15:53

You can close the E-coli thread permanently now. End of that story and it’s been up long enough for everyone to read.

Commonground – at 15:56

Please leave the map out of the Indo Outbreak thread. It develops a side scroll. A link to the spreadsheet is always nice to carry at the top of the Indo Outbreak thread. And to the Indo Summary thread also.

Many Cats – at 21:17

I know it’s a continuing concern and that you are working as hard as you can on it, but I wanted to alert you folks that the wiki is slowing down something fierce lately. I would hate for the swan to go “feet up” when people are having access difficulties. The delay in itself is enough to get some people’s PPF up to 10-plus as to what awful event might be happening to jam up the server with exponential traffic. Please note this is an observation, not a criticism and a BIG BIG HUGE THANKS for all you guys do!

Many Cats – at 21:19

an exponential RISE in traffic, that is…

newore – at 21:26

blame it on the cheese

;)

Bronco Bill – at 22:03

Many Cats – at 21:17 --- I’m not seeing any delays in browser refresh rates at this time. But then again, I’m using my high-speed dial-up 56K modem with a 50Kw generator attached to the back end to enhance my digital cable connection via a DCS WAN gateway! :-)

Seriously, the Forum speed seems to be okay. It may be your ISP. I’ve found that ISPs tend to get a lot of their customer traffic on Mondays and Thursdays because a lot of people watch the NFL games with the TV sound turned off and the Internet broadcast cranked up. Beginning tomorrow night, I’m going to be blitzing again for three nights, closing a bunch of older threads.

Or…you could blame it on the cheese. (?)

newore – at 23:12

17 October 2006

Bronco Bill – at 05:03

newore – at 23:12 --- That thread is slow due to length. If there’s lots more activity on it today, I’ll split it into Part 2. The speed of the rest of the Forum is fine…

I’m-workin’-on-it – at 07:18

Bronco Bill – at 05:03 When you split the cheese thread please copy the long post explaining the orfering process as well as the one with the link.

Commonground – at 08:07

Bronco Bill - “But then again, I’m using my high-speed dial-up 56K modem with a 50Kw generator attached to the back end to enhance my digital cable connection via a DCS WAN gateway!”…….

I just chocked on my Total Cereal. You should really give a “humor” warning!!! Thanks for the laugh.

Are we there yet – at 10:36

Just a quick, “checking the sources” kind of question. How do we know the “Stopping Cutting Bait and Start Fishing” thread really is from Grant Woodson? It is replete with grammatical errors, etc.

How can we be sure this is from Woodson and not some Agent provocateur using Woodson’s name?

Are we there yet – at 10:43

Meant to say “Grattan” Woodson…

Also, does anyone know (if it is the real Woodson) what specific expertise he has in influenza - or is he simply an MD who has written a book/pamphlet on the subject?

Bronco Bill – at 12:32

Are we there yet – at 10:43 --- Here’s a brief biography of Dr. Woodson.

Are we there yet – at 12:51

Thanks, BB. Apparently, his expertise is in Osteoporosis, not influenza. Interesting.

I also find it interesting that he is using the new thread he created here to cry wolf and then let others know where they can buy his own special brand of “wolf spray” (so to speak).

Are we there yet – at 12:57

Case in point:

Spirit in the Wind – at 12:56 Thanks Doctor. I just bought the book!

bgw in MT – at 13:52

I started a new topic, “Survival Reading” and tried to do the links right, but, mea culpa, I caused sidescroll. I’m sorry!

Mosaic – at 14:01

Hi, its been about a month since I asked when Fluwiki would be moving to a more efficient home, and Dem replied 4 to 8 weeks depending on this or that.

What is the latest on the move? I’m sorry if I’ve missed any updates.

pogge – at 14:17

bgw in MT:

Fixed. I’ve found that with long urls, it’s better to leave out the unnecessary spaces. I’ve edited the link instructions at the bottom of the page accordingly.

Bronco Bill – at 14:27

pogge? LOL!!

Snowhound1 – at 14:40

BB…What is this? Group Footer message…a secret code or something? :)

pogge – at 14:48

No. It’s a special page that’s included in every thread. It contains the posting box, the buttons and the instructions. And it’s now protected with the master password because it was the only I could it fixed!

pogge – at 14:50

Puleeese stop posting to that page!

Many Cats – at 19:35

BB: Well, I guess I will have to accept that the delays must be on my end (grumble, grumble). So glad your move went well!!!!! Virginia is a beautiful state, but so was California when I was growing up. I still prefer the Wild West, but California, at least as I knew it, is no more. Hope you get well settled in before winter!! :)

pogge – at 20:37

Many Cats:

Not necessarily on your end. I’m seeing periodic slowdowns too. It’s not across the board but intermittent. And with traffic up over the last couple of days, I expect that’s the main factor.

Bronco Bill – at 20:43

Many Cats – at 19:35 --- After moving back to CA a couple of years ago, DW and I both realized that the state that I remembered and grew up in just wasn’t there for us anymore. Too many changes in the 4 years we lived in Connecticut. You’re right in that VA is a beautiful state, and the area we’re in is partly suburban, partly rural, so it has the charms of both sides…

I, too, have noticed some slowdowns tonight over the past couple of hours, so it’s not Many Cats’ ISP. I’ve closed a bunch of threads, but now I have to go and paint some closet shelves. Oh boy!! More closings tomorrow and tomorrow night…

DemFromCTat 21:00

Still planning a move. life has a way of interfering with best laid plans, but we’re still preparing to move. Nonprofit status took longer than expected 9still not final) but we hope to open something soon as a parallel experiment.

Of course, then there’s the election…

Edna Mode – at 21:03

I just recorded the audio from the a show about pandemic preps for schools, educators, and parents. Several people on the thread about this were unable to access the webcast. Is there a way for me to post the audio file here? I don’t have a server to put it on. Tucking kids in and will check back later.

Many Cats – at 03:15

Thanks, BB!!!! I was wondering since it only seemed to be a problem on the wiki site, posting especially. I’m surprised you made it all the way across country without getting stopped by Homeland Security with all that RWFK! Probably makes a nice bribe, though!!! :) :) :) :)

Bronco Bill – at 05:50

DemFromCT – at 21:00 --- Will the move be to new hardware as well as new software, or simply a software change?

(mmmm….election. Another parallel experiment!)

Bronco Bill – at 05:56

anon mc – at 03:02 --- Mule deer and Mtn. Lions. And the Rocky Mtn. skyline, and the bluest skies in the world, and wide open country. I haven’t seen fireflies for a couple of years, so I’m looking forward to it

Many Cats – at 03:15 --- Believe it or not, not a drop of RWFK touched these gentle lips during my drive (or even at night afterwards!). I needed to be able to get on the road before dawn so I could enjoy 4 days of perfect sunrises!! :-) There is nothing as beautiful as watching the sun come up directly in front of you through a large sheet of glass while you’re driving due east at 90 mph! LOL! Truth be told, each sunrise was quite fantastic…

Commonground – at 08:35

Question about the news thread. A lot of wikians have got themselves convinced that the dengue outbreaks in India and its environs will turn out to have been H5N1. They have a very active thread and are really watching it closely. That’s great.

The more they talk about it, they more many are convincing themselves that they are right. Thie “belief” is now creeping over to the news thread where posts of dengue, viral hemoragic fever in the area, etc. are starting to pop up as bird flu news.

My question is - is at appropriate for stories of mystery illness, or dengue, etc. to be posted under a thread dedicated specifically to bird flu news. Should other items be in a seperate thread?

Thank you.

pogge – at 09:51

I’m-workin’-on-it – at 06:11:

You mean Rich Erwin’s links. That’s not exactly under my control.

I’m-workin’-on-it – at 10:05

Well, yes, I don’t know who is is, but that’s where the information wound up. I’ll go over to the recipe thread and ask Mari & Kathy to see about getting the information to you so it can be moved somewhere else where we can get to it — Mari has worked sooooo hard on getting it all formatted and moved — we just can’t lose access to it.

pogge – at 10:42

I think we’re talking at cross-purposes here. The recipes added to the wiki are still available. The main recipe page is here and all those links are functional.

I’m-workin’-on-it – at 10:49

Yep, you’re right…..I had originally been told to follow those other links to the place I was talking about…now I’m just going to bookmark this link so I can go straight there. Thanks for straightening me out — I can be so dense with this type stuff. Thanks! I’ll go UNalert Mari too!

Okiedokie – at 11:35

pogge, could you make embedded links in the discussion forum open a new internet window instead of how it works now. That would save alot of time.

pogge – at 12:11

I can’t control that across the board but you can make your own links open in a new window. Put %newwin% immediately in front of the link but outside the double square brackets.

Clawdia – at 12:38

I’m on high speed DSL using a Mac running with a gig of RAM, and many times I am unable to access Fluwiki at all, and if I do, I wait longer between page loads than I do for any other site I visit. That’s on a normal day - on a day when there is anything new in the flu world, I inevitably find I cannot access the Wiki at all.

Is this just me, or is it everybody?

I’m very worried that the Wiki will not be available when it is needed most.

I’m-workin’-on-it – at 13:14

Clawdia,

I have trouble a lot too, and am on DSL, so I just plan ahead to be here awhile! :-)

When I open a thread I will read down to the end, and maybe post without planning on waiting to see my post, but the page always loads the thread again and I have to click out of the thread to be able to read another thread. Lots of waiting in between sometimes.

I wonder if we could have another button beside the reset button that is a POST AND RETURN TO DISCUSSION FORUM or something like that, so that if you want to get out of this thread, after you post your message, you could click that button and eliminate the need to click back twice.

Or am I just dumb and am not aware of a quicker way to do that already??

I’m-workin’-on-it – at 13:16

Oh, I know that I can click on the drop down box by the ‘back’ button and select the page I want, but then I have to refresh it to see the latest stuff…..

pogge – at 13:29

many times I am unable to access Fluwiki at all

The wiki or the forum?

DennisCat 13:56

pogge please don’t make all links go to new windows. It is so easy to just right click and open in a new window when you want to and not when you don’t. Having the option is so nice.

Tom DVM – at 13:59

Clawdia. Thanks. I thought this problem was limited to those with slow speed internet and regular computers.

pogge – at 14:05

DennisC:

As I said, I can’t control that anyway. And even when someone uses the markup I suggested, right-clicking to bring up the context menu still works. I never open in a new window even if that markup is present. I open in a new tab in Firefox.

DennisCat 14:10

Clawdia – at 12:38 “not be available when it is needed most”

I would not count on accessing FluWiki nor any internet during a pandemic. I just save the “good” stuff” to disk and later place it on a flash drive. I have one flash drive with all the “good stuff” (recipies, medical advice, and so on) just in case and one flash drive in my bug out bag.

The speed (or lack there of) does not bother me too much. I just have wiki on one or two seperate windows (one for posting and one for reading) and pop them up between other on line work.

I still think that a few of us need to add some of the information files to our personal sites so when TSHTF others can copy from those sites. Things like water treatment, prep lists, medical items, so on on.

Bronco Bill – at 14:42

I’m-workin’-on-it – at 13:16 --- If you came into a thread from the Last 50 Changes list, then post a message, just click the full Back button to get back to the Last 50 list. I’ve found by doing that that the Last 50 list automagically refreshes once my browser gets back there. If you use the Back Button pull-down, the page you move back to won’t refresh.

Mosaic – at 15:41

“Clawdia. Thanks. I thought this problem was limited to those with slow speed internet and regular computers. “

I also have dsl, and a pc. Nothing special, but the past couple days I’ve had great difficulty accessing the FW forum, sometimes not at all, sometimes so slow, I just give up and go elsewhere. I’m sure I’m not the only one.

Its not that anyone expects FW to be up after a pandemic starts and we are already aware of it, its that with its professional and world-wide member contacts, it may be one of the better tools for being able to watch a pandemic develop in the first place, so we all will know when to go grab out kids out of school and to begin sheltering in place. If its not reliably available as a pandemic slowly unfolds because of increased traffic of concerned people watching, that could be a real tragedy to us all.

Bronco Bill – at 16:43

I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the Mods are able to get the new platform up and at least running parallel to the current setup so we can all test access speeds on our client computers with the increased traffic we’re seeing…I don’t think it’s the actual server, but just the software that is being run now. It wasn’t really designed for the traffic we’re seeing, and nobody knew in the beginning that FluWiki would see this amount of traffic.

Commonground – at 16:55

While we are on the subject….I am very surprised anytime after 6:00 pm EST that I don’t time out just trying to refresh the forum. Wiki is already up. I hit refresh and I spin and spin forever. I come within seconds of timing out. Got a Mac. Road Runner/cable line. I don’t bother trying to get on in the evening.

Someone asked if it were the forum or the Wiki as a whole - I primarily visit the forum.

I frequently stay up until 2–3 a.m. eastern time, because it seems that’s the only time of day that I can get access to the information on the forum without spending far too long doing nothing but waiting.

I’m not good at multi-tasking.

AnnieBat 01:18

If there are any Mods lurking, could you please close the “premature” News thread for October 20th - there are 2 - one was started while we were still on the 19th Wiki-time. It is called “News Reports October 20″. I have created a new one called “News Reports for October 20″.

I thought (dangerous habit) it was the best way to get the News Summary at the top of the thread and get us all back in sync. I have included the stories in the ‘wrong’ thread in the summary and put a posting to that effect in the thread.

I just don’t want our news split over 2 threads for the day - this was already happening with the 19th and early 20th threads …

Cheers and thanks .. and I will happily (??) take a spanking if I have taken the wrong course of action here ;-D

Since picking up a copy Time magazine on the Circle Line on the Tube in London, I have been lurking/posting here for almost a year to the day and have experienced shared alarm as situations developed in China, Turkey and Indonesia. As I understand it, the scientific community remains concerned but has not changed its threat level. Despite this, many contributors to Fluwiki maintain that a human pandemic from avian influenza is inevitable. Your thoughts on the current situation would be most welcome.
