Forum: Good Deals on Batteries

I’m-workin’-on-it – at 08:14

This thread is to help those looking for good prices on batteries as opposed to the thread where Carrey in VA is trying to put together a great permanent deal for us with a deep discount…..until that’s finalized, let’s use this space to let everyone know where we can find some batteries on sale! Below are links provided so far:

Sams has a 48 pack of Alkaline AA batteries for $10.

Also, always check ebay — sellers there carry a lot of these same deals or better on equipment & batteries!

Is it true that you can recharge alkaline batteries?

If I bought a solar charger, how much sun does it take to recharge? Can you do it on cloudy days? (maybe this should go in the dummies thread) :)

Aldi has Energizer batteries on sale beginning Nov. 12 for $6.99 per pack: 16 pack of AA or AAA 8 pack of C or D 4 pack of 9V

No matter who says that they have done it, you CANNOT recharge alkaline batteries.

My solar battery charger takes 3 sunny days to recharge four 1600Ah batteries. You do make some headway on a cloudy day, but not much.

Well I beg to differ about not recharging alkaline batteries, but what do I know.

I’m-workin’-on-it – at 21:52

What DO you know about it — this might be interesting!

Please allow me to add to my former statement. Putting alkaline batteries in a battery recharger can cause them to explode or catch fire! Due to that fact, I have not pursued trying to charge them and can therefore not comment on whether or not they will actually take some kind of charge. Every charger I have ever seen warns against doing this, that should be clear enough for nearly everybody.

Bronco Bill – at 08:32

HillBilly Bill – at 06:06 --- Agreed. A couple of years ago, I bought one o’ them “We can recharge any type of battery” chargers for $15. Cool, I thought, ‘cuz I have a 6 D-cell MagLite that requires alkalines (of course, I only use Coppertops!).

Well, wouldn’t ya know it…I put 6 very dead D batteries into this “unit”, and let it perform it’s magic…I waited about 30 minutes and came back out to the garage to check on them…

The batteries were shot. The charger was shot. And to this day, there is a beautiful brown permananet smudge in the same exact shape as that charger…

Y’know, it’s amazing just how much smoke can come out of a battery as it’s cooking!!!! ;-)

At least there wasn’t a big brown smudge in your yard the exact same shape as your garage used to be!

I’m-workin’-on-it – at 08:41

hehe…good one!

Bronco Bill – at 08:47

LOL!! THAT, sir, is why I went out after 30 minutes to check on it…the little instruction booklet (which had been translated from the language in the country of origin), said something to the effect of “Please to allow special time, aprox. 6 hours GMT, for a battery to charge to fullness.

Ok I dont mean to ruffle feathers on this one, honest. My experience was I bought one of the “will recharge anything gizmos” but it was bookoo expensive at the time from what I remember. I would do AA and AAA alkaline batteries. The catch was it would not bring back to life dead batteries. It had a sliding scale of what it could recharge, the more depleted the battery was the less it could bring it back. I used it for years and years and never had a problem. It has a computer controlled internal system that would also tell you if the battery could not be recharged. I lost it in a move in college and wish I still had it but I swear it worked. And yes, I even took a volt meter to the batteries to check.

Ok I tried to find the same thing online but came across this instead. Its a different model than what I had but its almost the same otherwise. Check it out, its called an extender not a recharger. http://tinyurl.com/ycxg3g

Well, there you go! We all learned something!

Does the Battery Xtender Alkaline Battery Recharger have a 12 v input jack? What is the transformer’s output voltage?

Thanks!

Annoyed Max- Not mad yet – at 14:40

Oh, I dont know, the one I had plugged right into the wall. There are prob all different variations.

LauraBat 14:46

Speaking of batteries, has anyone found a good solar recharger yet? Thanks!

Bronco Bill – at 14:57

Strider – at 14:15 --- You might need to buy an inverter to use between the car’s 12v output (cigar lighter) and the charger…

Again, anyone have a good solar battery charger? Thanks!

Bumping LauraB’s question!!

HillBilly Bill – at 06:08

LauraB – at 09:35

I thought I was buying a good one, until I found that it takes 3 full sunny days to recharge four 1600Ah AA batteries. My plan now is to recharge batteries and lanterns from a 12V deep-cycle battery that is itself recharged by a 15 watt solar panel.

HillBilly Bill – at 06:09

sorry, that should be mAh AA batteries. I wish there was such a thing!
