Hand Sanitizer Gel

1/4 cup aloe vera gel 1/4 cup grain alcohol 10 drops fragrance oil 1 drop food coloring

Combine ingredients and shake well. Store in a spray pump bottle to use.

LMK — I recall seeing soemthing about needing at least 65% alcohol in these hand sanitizers to be effective agaist cold anf flu viruses. (Don’t quote me on that percentage though). Seems like this recipe would only be 50% alcohol — correct?

Seems like, if you altered it to 1/4 cup gel, 1/2 cup grain alcohol, the alcohol? I would love to actually be able to make my own hand sanitizer Gel, anyone know where I can check this recipe out?

question, and perhaps this belongs on the dummie thread, but grain alcohol, is like vodka? (she hangs her head down shamefully laughting to herself)

oh a multi-purpose jell

Does anybody have any more recipes?

Like the gelatin one or the glycerine one.

Much cheaper to stock basics and make your own.

This thread has my attention. I could search, but wondered if anyone had a good recipe?

Where does one get the alcohol? Distill it? Which is something else…I’d love to make a still :-)

I’m making my final “master list” (sounds like I’m organized, ha!) and Everclear is on the list. I don’t like using isopropyl alcohol since it absorbs at least somewhat through the skin and many people consider that toxic. I have a good friend who’s been practicing acupuncture for at least 25 years and said that prolonged exposure to isopropyl alcohol can harm the liver. So I’m going to make hand sanitizer out of Everclear (mixed with water since it’s 200 proof) and maybe vegetable glycerin, aloe gel sounds good too. Probably add some anti-septic essential oils like grapefruit, lemon, orange, oregano, thyme, eucalyptus, tea tree, lavender… the sky’s the limit. Most essential oils have some bacterial/viral killing qualities, the ones I listed are good. I found a hand sanitizer recipe the other night and will post it shortly.

I also make a Neem based hand and thing sanitizer, I’ve posted the recipe before on FW I think, and it will be on my soon to be opened up to the public website. Which website will have a lot of basic survival stuff from a natural/Ayurvedic/vegetarian/POV and also a CHEAP POV. If anyone wants to know when it’s up, email me and I’ll send the url when it’s up. LOL - that would be MayAllBeWell@gmail.com. Not gamil.com. Finger dyslexia kicking in.

Just found this article - looks like rubbing alcohol is ok but has to be at least 60%:

 Hand Sanitizers, Good or Bad?

…a study published in this month’s issue of the journal Emerging Infectious Diseases found that at least one brand of sanitizer found on store shelves, as well as some recipes for homemade versions circulating on Web sites about crafts or directed at parents, contain significantly less than the 60 percent minimum alcohol concentration that health officials deem necessary to kill most harmful bacteria and viruses.

“What this should say to the consumer is that they need to look carefully at the label before they buy any of these products,” said Elaine Larson, professor of pharmaceutical and therapeutic research at Columbia’s nursing school. “Check the bottle for active ingredients. It might say ethyl alcohol, ethanol, isopropanol or some other variation, and those are all fine. But make sure that whichever of those alcohols is listed, its concentration is between 60 and 95 percent. Less than that isn’t enough.”

oooh - didn’t know that about rubbing alcohol - thanks for the tip…

needs to be strong between 60–70% drinking alchols are not good enough, (exept the good old moonshine :-D

Denatured Ethanol comes in many bottles, stove fuel, consentrated carwindow fluid, doktors spirit etc. Isopropanol is in allmost all desinfecting tissues, gels etc.

7 parts 96% alcholol, 2 parts glycerine, 1 part water. Add color (if you use a clear spirit) or perfume like essential oils etc so people are aware that its not water in those bottles. Handsized spary bottels are brilliant. If trying to make a gel the ones for liquid soap with big nosse should be fine. Can u use aloe vera directly from plant? its a brilliant idea as a skin protection..

put recipes on main wiki? its great barter item, and will be scarse during SHTF.. especial the carwindow fluid is good to have in mind, its the biggest source for alchol awailble in any country. Car industry is bigger than any paintshops or pharmacies.

Urdar-Norway – at 18:06

sorry, that should be 7 parts 96% alcholol, 1 parts glycerine, 1 part water. to be on the safe side.. if you dillute to much..

Urdar-Norway – at 18:10

buying those cheap small paper vipes, put in plastic box with a tight lid. Soaked in mixture, voila, you own desinfetant tissues. (I prefer the pump sprys bottle, also fine for other things than hands)

remeber all strong alcohol is flamable.. dont light your siggy while cleaning hands! :D

Man, I lived in Illinois for medical school and still remember the Jello Shots my friends used to make with Everclear! Can’t get the stuff in CA now though.

BeWellat 18:36

Everclear (comes in different names) is 200 proof, which means 100% alcohol, so it can and should be diluted. Math experts can figure out how much water to add. :-)

I’ve got sensitivty problems and cannot be around chlorine bleach, and don’t want any more toxicity via rubbing/isopropyl alcohol, so I use my own Neem based/essential oil and white vinegar mix, and will soon be using my Everclear stuff when going to the outside world.

I live in a very rural place so often days go by without going anywhere where I see anyone else.

BeWellat 18:40

Just drive up to OR (if you’re in Northern CA) and stock up! No problem getting it here.

No one could pay me enough money to swallow it, though.

Urdar-Norway – at 19:49

in fact alcohol can be only 96% maximum, if you buy a bootle that contains 100%, the moment you opens it, it sucks in water from air and ends up beeing 96%, isnt that strange :)

anything that is pure and stronger than 60% is illegal here.. but we have a great tradion of “baking at home “ :D
