Forum: Campstove Drip Coffeemaker

15 November 2006

Hillbilly Bill – at 09:04

I was in Wally World yesterday and saw a drip coffeemaker by Coleman that is designed to be used with their campstove. Has anybody tried one of these? I know the “old-fashioned” campstove coffeepots are readily available and attractively priced, but I really don’t like percolated coffee.

Any other ideas for making drip coffee without electricity? My current plan is to patiently pour hot water through the top of a non-working coffeemaker I have in reserve.

have you priced stainless steel stove top coffee pots on ebay? (they ain’t cheap) I’d stay away from aluminum. About that “don’t like percolated coffee” GET OVER IT! otherwise eventually you’ll be drinking coffee perked via coffee in a sock dipped in hot water… ;-)

I’m usually a lurker and don’t post often:) You could always try a french press. I love mine and you can also use it for loose leaf tea.

My favorite when no power camping: Boiling hot water through a Melitta filter heaped with French Roast, with said filter perched on top of a thermal pitcher. You only have to boil the water once, and the end result is a nice hot cuppa joe.

I will dig around for a Melitta link, but you can buy the cones and filters everywhere.

I also like the French press, and I think it is actually cheaper than the Coleman Pot, though abit harder to find-I found mind at a Whole Foods Market. My dh-who also dosn’t care for perc coffee likes the French Press very much.

We also have an ancient camp coffee pot-its been in our family so long I don’t even know where it came from, that we use and its really great. A few years ago someone gave us the Coleman pot-we still have it, we’ve used it once or twice, but its sitting in the basement, in our camping gear.

Jefiner – at 09:29 --- I had some friends who used a Melitta-style maker for years. They swore by it and refused to ever even consider buying a regular “plug-in” style coffee maker! I think they used it with a regular 12-cup carafe.

Just boil water and pour it into the filter…wait about 10 minutes, and out comes a full carafe of that vile, bitter brew.

<BB drinks a pot of coffee a day!>

Only one?

Bronco Bill – at 09:57

;-) That’s BEFORE breakfast…

My son has a Mr. Coffee that works on a camp stove. Makes coffee equal to an electric Mr. Coffee.

But, it seems to take a lonnnnngggg time, ie waste of fuel in times when you would want to perhaps conserve fuel.

I bought a French press, much quicker, IMO. And, also have a “camp” pot percolator type . And have put back lots of Folgers. Gotta have my cup of Joe.

BB , you`re a wimp.;-) I drink 2–3 pots a day, and realize that I will need to cut back when TSHTF to conserve supplies.

Thanks for the link, that looks like the best alternative.

My excuse is that as a techie, I need to be able to type on a laptop. Too much coffee makes me type faster than I can read, and then I can’t read what I typed! lol!!

Thanks BB - I’m ROTFLMAO! so funny!

my mom and me both have used aluminum pots for years and we are still going strong.I buy them for 5 or 6 bucks at garage sales. Its the same old senario throw out the old and bring in the new.

I can vouch for the Melitta, works great. Every guest in my home that has had my coffee says it is the best they have ever had, and wonders what I do. Truth is, I buy whole beans, good ones. I never buy the canned crap I see in the grocery store, the resulting brew tastes like boiled water was poured over shredded cheap cardboard, ick.

I grind the beans fresh every time I make the coffee, never ahead of time. And I use the small cones meant to make an individual cup, it sits directly on the coffee cup as you pour the boiling water in. I have 2 of these cones because my husband, who used to be a coffee hater, now loves it and I don’t like waiting for mine while his brews. :P

If TSHTF, I have no worries. I have enough filters to make coffee for the next 5 years, because I also purchased them to pre-filter water that might come from a river nearby before it goes into the purifier. I wanted to extend the life of the filters by not clogging them prematurely with excessive particulate matter.

Almost everyone who has tried my coffee ends up getting the same filter, so give it a try for your own preps. It is probably the easiest method I have ever seen aside from a french press. And I would use one of those, but I don’t care for all the extra sediment in my coffee, personal preference I guess.

Oh! I also have one of those little espresso makers too. The tiny little 2 chamber metal pot thing. They don’t take much energy to use either.

We also use the Melitta method and have done so for years. It makes really good coffee that is not bitter. (We use Melitta coffee, which is finely ground.)

Hillbilly Bill: We have the Coleman coffeemaker. It makes good coffee; however, it takes a lot of propane on the campstove. It’s a neat little camping gadget when you don’t need to worry about running out of propane. We also have the stainless steel perculator. We just need to practice using it over an open fire!!!

North of Houston – at 19:30

Thanks, thats what I needed to know. Some things that are fine for camping just won’t fit the bill in leaner times.

Bronco Bill – at 20:08

HBB---If you’re not in a hurry for that first cup, and you can’t afford to waste propane, percolate the coffee over an open campfire, then pour the brew through a filter. That’ll remove some of the ‘bitter taste’ from the fresh coffee. But…it DOES take twice as long to get the caffeine into yer system…only ‘cuz you’re “brewing” it twice…

HillBilly Bill – at 21:26

Bronco Bill – at 20:08

BB, it’s actually the act of percolation that I don’t care for. I think it should at least be a misdemeanor, if not a felony. Not a problem waiting for the caffeine rush, I’m not a big junkie. I do not enjoy my DW when she is caffeine deprived however!

Grace RN – at 22:25

Such softies. Pack a wad of coffee grounds in yer cheeck and suck on it all day.

LOLOLOL!!

Jefiner – at 23:40

And, when you are done enjoying your hot cuppa joe, you take the Melitta filter out and dump the cooled grounds around the bases of your rose bushes. Supposedly balances out the alkali in the soil, and hey, the caffeine buzz can’t hurt those tender buds either!
