Dem, where is the list of lot #’s, contacts, etc, for ibuprofen? Thanks! I think it was you that posted it “somewhere” the other day. I thought I booked marked it… but guess not. Again, thank you.

We will clean them out every 12 hours or so. Don’t bother to post a SPAM ALERT… that’ll just bump the spam threads to higher visibility.

Okieman – at 10:45 Ya’ll are closing an awful lot of threads. Know something is coming that we don’t? ;-)

Er… pogge on the road?

DemFromCTat 12:48

Where were you last night? ;-)

Slow as molasses.

BTW, the new, improved beta of “Flu Wiki Forum” should be ready to test drive by the end of the week. We’ll announce closer to the roll out date.

Bronco Bill – at 12:56

Okieman – at 10:45 --- Ya’ll are closing an awful lot of threads.

It’s just my job! ;-) I noticed that the forum was running dead slow last night, so I’ve been trying to close some of the older threads to keep the access speed acceptable.

I wish I knew something, but alas, I’m just a small cog in a much larger wheel!

As part of an ongoing outreach using social software, I’ve made a “loop” (aka thread) on bird flu here at Hot Soup, a relatively new political/social site. Feel free to join and comment. Sharing what we know is part of our mission.

 Sorry Dem.

I just went there, and am still ROTFLMAO !!

Dr Dave – at 16:30

Dem,

Are you pretty close to posting that .pdf file? I don’t mean to be a nuisance, just a tickler.

slainte – at 16:37

Please Dem, Some of us really would like to see Dr Dave’s file here. Thanks

DemFromCTat 17:51

Absolutely and thank you for the tickler!!

This is the entrance to the ftp, and look for a file called called Becoming Self Sufficient (3).

Bronco Bill – at 18:26

I’m-workin’-on-it – at 16:06 --- Sorry ‘bout that. I just couldn’t stop myself!

BroncoBill:

I want to add my YEEHAA! to the pile that’s bound to amass if this means you’ll have more time to comment because you have to spend less time moderating. (Not that there’s anything wrong with that.)

DemFromCTat 19:03

slainte – at 18:37

Now that’s a thank you!

A reminder of plans… we think the new forum will have exciting features.. the ability to link to individual comments, the ability to write diaries (the first long post in each new thread) with comments to follow, and the diaries would be taggable (a tag might be rumors, or food, or self-defense, or virology, or whatever). Tags would be searchable so you could find all the diaries about virology in a hurry, or all the diaries written by Bronco Bill, or all of Bronco Bill’s comments.

Will it actually have all these features? We hope so… stay tuned. But, it will require registration. That means no more anonymous, anonymous, and then anonymous (response by anonymous). The registration is by your chosen handle and will be unique.

We would keep this one going for some time (months, maybe) so people could get used to the other. But we wouldn’t have to close threads, and we hopefully would significantly speed up the service.

We’ve taken steps to set up the new Forum, and we still have work to do before it’s open to the public… but it’s coming, and soon, to an internets near you.

At that time, we would then open up the issue of PayPal or other donation (no subscription, just voluntary donation). No decision has been made about that.

All of thist has been previously discussed. But it’s time to bring it up again. Once I see that the new Forum is chugging along , I’ll post a specific thread about it. It’ll be a week or two more before you can visit…

Bronco Bill – at 19:14

Uh oh…looks like I better check in with the Unemployment Bureau…. :-(

;-)

DemFromCTat 19:22

Not likely… tags are addable by users. you’d be going through the diaries every night tagging them with RWFK if useful (to you) and WWFK if merely speculative.

YetAnotherAnonat 19:29

Go with Vbulletin hosted at a data center.

You would be glad you did.

Bronco Bill – at 19:34

:-D

DemFromCTat 19:48

YetAnotherAnon – at 19:29

Thanks.. we’re going to go in a different direction… not a traditional bulletin board, which is very linear. We’re going to experiment with scoop-style community social software.

Give us a little more time and you’ll see the difference.

I’m-workin’-on-it – at 20:05

Bronco Bill – at 18:26 :-)))

DemFromCT – at 19:48…please, please, please just make certain that the print is as large as it is here….avianflutalk is always a horrible color & the font is too small. Curevents has clean colors, but is cluttered & too small—who cares how many views a thread is getting…if *I* can’t see it to begin with, I’m not going to waste time opening it. Keep stats in the background, not on the threads — you didn’t ask but I’m saying my 2 cents anyway!

Unfortunate you’re choosing to go with a slash-type of software.

I’m not particularly fond of the layout at DailyKos, which runs scoop.

At least host it in a data center and ask for donations to cover the costs, instead of on a desktop machine in somebody’s office.

K I S S

My unsolicited $0.02

Bronco Bill – at 20:30

My understanding was that the site (both servers) is hosted…and not a desktop machine in “someone’s office”.

Dem---Have you been holding out and just running this off your Mac? ;-) Heh…no wonder all the spam!

DemFromCTat 20:37

LOL. It won’t be running on a desktop (at least, not my desktop)… we’ll have up to 40,000 page views/day available to start (twice what we get now), and we’ll purchase more bandwdth at need. We have more robust hosting ideas if we need more.

Yes, we’ll ask for donations, eventually.

Everything’s a balance, with some things gained and some things lost. But I don’t find BB’s to be good community builders. Thanks for the unsolicited $0.02

Bronco Bill – at 20:51

HUH?!? I’m not a good community builder? :-(

DemFromCTat 20:55

LOL. I don’t find bulletin boards…

Aw, heck.

16 November 2006

Galt – at 09:39

Have been reading some of the other threads, including the PPF one. Seems that for many posters stress level, sense of more immediate pan threat is way up in last couple of days. Any new threat assessment/angle from the mods?

DemFromCTat 11:12

I note that stress levels are up. I don’t hear anything unusual from government or academic sources. But I do note that with the citizen initiatives (see wiki main page, R bar), election of a new DG and WHOs’ unhappiness with China over sequence sharing, there’s lots in the news.

I think that the US Government is getting more serious about planning and prepping. Beyond that, i have nothing to offer. it’s not like Peter Palese has come out and said, “I’m wrong, H5N1 might go pandemic and I’m worried”. Now, that would be news.

gardner – at 11:21

Galt and Dem — Isn’t it the Nature article that just came out that has people nervous? If I understand it correctly, doesn’t it say that they’ve found several cases of h5n1 in humans where the virus showed significant changes. The receptor binding is more “human” and less “avian” in these samples, suggesting that the virus might be getting closer to going h2h efficiently.

Please correct me if I misunderstood the article.

gardner – at 11:37

Correction. Shouldn’t read “if I misunderstood the article” but “misunderstood what others here on FW are saying about it.” Haven’t read the article. I’m a humanities geek, not a science geek.

And it might not mean that the virus might be getting closer to efficient h2h (I’m not sure if they know what exactly the virus needs for that), but that it is gaining some sort of new adaptations that really don’t look good.

pogge – at 13:36

In case you missed the thread I started, yes we blinked out for a couple of minutes and it’s quite likely that one or more of you lost posts. I apologize. The server was maxed right out and it looked to me as though I needed to reboot while I still could. If I’d let it die on its own, it would have been a bigger problem.

Sorry ‘bout that, but things seem to have picked up a bit. This is why we’re setting up an alternative forum. There’s not a lot we can do with this platform without throwing a lot more hardware at it.

Bronco Bill – at 13:41

without throwing a lot more hardware at it.

Donations of large hammers, kitchen sinks, and old auto engines can be mailed directly to pogge in care of The Canadian Server Room!

  NAh, BB.

I think what is really needed is a lot of Hertz rental vans.Moving day is coming soon, I hope.

I know,I know. Hope is not a plan. But, does sound like the planners around here have the plans in place.

DemFromCTat 14:38

gardner – at 11:37

I think in a nutshell, the authors are proposing their own assay and observation as a way to track viral evolution to pandemic, but that there are other ways to get to the same place.

Whether the Nature authors’ way or some other way is the way it happens in nature (small n) remains to be seen.

I await the peer review piece.

pogge – at 14:44

Donations of large hammers…

I do have a fifteen pound sledge but I’m trying to be patient.

anon_22 – at 14:47

gardner – at 11:21 Galt and Dem — Isn’t it the Nature article that just came out that has people nervous? If I understand it correctly, doesn’t it say that they’ve found several cases of h5n1 in humans where the virus showed significant changes. The receptor binding is more “human” and less “avian” in these samples, suggesting that the virus might be getting closer to going h2h efficiently.

They found some mutations that when tested in the lab, show varying degrees of binding to alpha2,6 endings, the type that has so far been said to be ‘human’ receptors. However, these are not animal studies, the science is in its early days, and there are many unknowns so that one can’t say for sure that the threat has increased. I myself am not too worried about the findings, we need to do more of these kinds of tests to know how valid they are. I am more concerned about the single strain dominance of H5N1 in China. Having said that, unless there are large human outbreaks that we don’t know about, we still don’t know how close this is to a pandemic strain.

Sorry if this is not too helpful. :-)

The Nature article is summarized and discussed here, and the Fujian strain in China here

Leo7 – at 15:00

Mods,

Could someone direct me to Dr. Dave’s Paper everyone is talking about. I tried the search function but it didn’t come up. Thanks

DemFromCTat 15:16

Leo7 – at 15:00

follow direction here.

anonymous – at 15:29

it seems that there were important mutations in the RBD, now the subject of this paper, from Iraq,Aserbaidjan although WHO had denied there were significant mutations. What else are they hiding ?

Leo7 – at 15:31

DemFromCT-

Thanks, I totally missed it in the scroll.

DemFromCTat 15:41

What else are they hiding ?

I assume they missed it or discounted it rather than that they are ‘hiding’ it. all the moire reason to publish all sequences, though WHO claims they don’t own them, the individual countries do.

Watching in Texas – at 17:19

Dem - for those of us who have already mailed donations to FluWiki, may I assume that some day my check will be deposited?

anon_22 – at 17:28

anonymous – at 15:29

Er, this paper was only published a few days ago. WHO does not do their own research on RBD.

DemFromCTat 17:57

Watching in Texas – at 17:19

yes, they went to melanie, who has been ill. I’ll be taking over “treasurer” function and all money will go to the site. As she recovers those checks will be desposited.

Watching in Texas – at 17:59

Dem - Thanks!

Had a vision of you pogge with the sledge hammer & computer, and you sitting there ever so calmly. When it’s over…you say “Done”….and move on.

DemFromCTat 18:13

heh… he’s got the patience of a saint. unlike me, who woulda used the tool as it was meant to be used…

Commonground – at 18:23

ha! Where will I find a link to this alternate site when you get it? Here?

pogge – at 18:39

Trust me, you’ll hear about it. Here, on the wiki front page and anywhere else we can think of.

DemFromCTat 18:47

yeah, there’ll be a new thread called “New Flu Wiki Forum” or something like that.

We need a week to do some housekeeping.

mosaic – at 18:53

If its not too late, I’d also like to see a spell check and an edit function at the new forum.

Thanks.

Scaredy Cat – at 18:54

When Flu Wiki moves to its new site, would the moderators consider inviting Niman back to the forum? Kind of a new place, fresh start sort of thing?

DemFromCTat 19:11

SC – at 18:54

No, I think not.

mosaic – at 18:53

There is an edit function for diaries, not comments. Happily, there is a preview for comments.

If you download the newest Firefox, it has built in spell check when you use it as your browser.

DemFromCT – at 17:51

Dem I have been trying to access the FTP link that you included all day but have not had any luck. Would you mind checking if the link is functional. Thanks

DemFromCTat 07:21

the ftp was down due to traffic 9same problem with the forum… it is working now.

Commonground – at 07:50

I’ll be getting a new e-mail address in 10 days, so I should wait to register until then right? No sense in doing it twice. So I won’t be able to post articles to the new site until I get my new e-mail address, correct? I feel like I’m inside a clothes dryer. Where’s that sledge hammer?

pogge – at 09:29

You don’t need to wait to register. You can change your email address in your profile at the new site when it changes. In fact there are spots for two email addresses. The “real” one which you supply when you register and the “public” one which you only supply if you want to.

Commonground – at 10:39

Thanks pogge.

FrenchieGirlat 12:14

Bronco Bill – at 12:17

FrenchieGirl – at 12:14 --- Not ‘impossibly’, but darn close to it.
