is almost ready. if anyone would like to be a beta tester, please email me at demfromct@earthlink.net and I’ll send you the URL to play with. Be prepared to try and post there. ;-) You’ll need a real email, and you’ll need to register. Long time users will be able to preserve their unique names.

If we can get the kinks out, we’ll be ready for launch in a few days. It’s built and hosted by soapblox, and works similarly to some of the political sites like Daily Kos and slashdot (diaries, comments, tags), but without comment ratings (that’ll be a community decision to add). You can recommend good diaries and keep your favorites on a personal Hot List.

The colors will be blue and white, and we will have decent sized fonts.

The server crash last night is telling us it’s time, based on traffic (not based on the mods’ reassessment of risk - that has noit changed, though we all see the same news you do).

Commonground – at 07:42

I’ll be fine with a Mac, right?

Ruth – at 07:44

So, are we still keeping this one too? Do we all need to register? Last night when I couldn’t get on, I felt lost. With things heating up this AM, this site could literally be a lifesaver. Thanks so much.

urdar-Norway – at 07:45

please keep some of the warm yellow collor.. I belive it calms people down, make them more friendly :D

Nova – at 07:46

If we don’t want to register can we at least still read, if not post?

crfullmoon – at 07:52

Sure you can’t keep the warm gold color?

DemFromCTat 08:06

Commonground – at 07:42

I use a Mac, so it’s got to work for us ;-)

Ruth – at 07:44

Yes, we’ll keep this one, too. Too much info here.

urdar-Norway – at 07:45 crfullmoon – at 07:52

We’re still playing… the yellow isn’t as readable. We have light blue, black and dark blue, and it is still friendly. But we can change the look.

Nova – at 07:46

Absolutely! But the powerful features are an incentive to register. Even then, you will only be seen as Nova.

Nova – at 08:15

If we register will our e-mail address remain private to the public, or will only the mods have access to it?

DemFromCTat 08:20

Private, only accessible to myself and pogge, but you can choose to publish it on your own page (every user has a personal page) similar to what people do now in Profiles. Some do, some don’t.

DemFromCTat 08:21

PS: no more anonymous.

Jefiner – at 08:23

I would love to be a beta tester! email: fawcetttataoldotcom.

Woohoo!

anonymous – at 08:25

I am seriously disgruntled.

anonymous – at 08:25

me too. This will be no fun at all.

anonymous – at 08:25

That wasn’t me.

DemFromCTat 08:29

I will be away from my email until noon, but I’ll get back to everyone.

anonymous – at 08:30

Oh yes it was. I’d know you anywhere.

jim – at 08:33

You all have never been truly anonymous. Check the Site meter. It gives your IP address. Which is usually unique and is traceable back to you. Security is an illusion.

anonymous – at 08:35

aw rats!

Mari – at 08:38

Would the mods like me to do something different with the cookbook (e.g., txt, doc, or rtf version)? It’s currently located on the main wiki as wiki pages at Recipes.

Let us know where to read up on the capabilities of the new software (e.g., tagging for search, folder structure, indexing).

cottontop – at 08:46

What? I’m not going to be able to clean my house while I’m waiting on the thread to load, or to post? ;-)

The plan sounds great. I’m looking forward to the “Grand Opening.”

DemFromCTat 08:47

The wiki will remain the same for now. Only the Forum will change.

In the new forum, you can copy and paste a thread from here if you want it there by starting a new diary, tag it as recipes, and then “recipes” will be a searchable feature. All other diaries about recipes will be easily found. ;-)

DemFromCTat 08:48

BTW, later on down the road, we may change wiki platforms, too, but that’s much more complicated.

DemFromCTat 08:49

jim – at 08:33

That’s only partially true, in that the sitemeter shows what IP addresses are on, but with 20,000 page views a day, i have no idea which one is yours. Only the system admin (pogge) has that power.

exactly. ;-)

Jefiner – at 08:52

I have been to the promised land, and the new format is SO COOL. Highly recommended! It will take a little time to figure the format out, but if I can sort it out, anyone can.

Goju – at 08:57

I love blue and white.

—AND BIG BROTHER—

Just wanted to let everyone know that on the internet there is no total anonymity and at the new forum they will not have lost “ total anonymity” because they never had it

cottontop – at 09:04

Mods-

I think I can speak for everyone here, and say that you all have done an outstanding job at the Wiki. We greatly appreaciate yor effort to get us a new Wiki, that can handle the volume of information this site generates. Thanks, thanks.

c3jmp – at 09:34

jim – at 09:00

not worried about big brother.. he’s overworked, underpaid, doesn’t have very good gear, and has to jump through hoops to get anywhere. registration will cut down on some of the noise, though. it’s all a lock and pick game. focusing on the game though could be a bad thing if you get so intent you miss the really big truck about to run you over. not much satisfaction in being a grease spot on the highway, no matter how interesting the game might have been. too many folks are intent on their respective games, and there’s a really big truck bearing down.

I’m-workin’-on-it – at 09:55

Count me in! im.workin.on.it@gmail.com

You anon guys are too funny! But you’re NOT going to be missed if you know what I mean.

Thanks in advance for the font and easy to read color!

anonymous – at 10:01

I think, you can be “almost” anonymous, but it’s some effort. Best you find some other member, whom you can send your post and who will post them. Volunteers ? There are also remailers, but you would need an email-to-wiki interface. Pogge will (NOT) tell us how to do it…

I’m-workin’-on-it – at 10:04

well duh….I finally read the directions…I’m sending my email to your email! sorry!

giraffe – at 10:11

I don’t participate much, but I would like to be included. ladyamazon13 at yahoo dot com

INFOMASS – at 10:30

Dem: A lot of FW has been about trying to make our society more resilient to pandemic threats, so it certainly makes sense to make FW itself more resilient. Must say if Niman was impressed with the recent Nature article I am surprised that the mods did not change their own risk assessment, even if the findings are old - it does seem to me to raise the risk level (and likely future traffic level on FW). But anyway, thank you for all that you have done. I will e-mail you to be a beta tester.

Albert – at 10:44

Thanks a lot for the registration requirement ! No more personal attacks by “Anon for this post”.

Thanks, mods !

DemFromCTat 10:52

INFOMASS – at 10:30

We were concerned, we are concerned, but we still don’t know what’s going to happen, or when. Nothing that has been documented or posted makes us less concerned, that’s for sure. But I’m not personally more concerned at this time.

Bronco Bill – at 11:02

jim – at 08:33 --- That’s not neccessarily true either. It only shows my ISP, and the fact that I’m running a NAT router with random DHCP and a firewall means that you don’t have my IP.

anonymous – at 12:02

the king of insignificant bonmots has been caught on this unlogical, unbelievable statement :

 > Nothing that has been documented or posted makes us less concerned,
 > that’s for sure
ANON-YYZ – at 12:06

DemFromCT – at 07:27

Please email me the beta link at anon.yyz at gmail dot com

Thanks

Bronco Bill – at 12:18

anonymous – at 12:02

I recommend a hobby to keep yourself busy. If you have nothing else to offer, at least conserve bandwidth by refraining from posting.

Urdar-Norway – at 13:14

I will use this event to notify abuot the existing Norwegian Fluwiki Forum. Its not that great, but the dedicated handfull of posters did a great job collecting and sorting relevant information before the went into “Continue Life and Lurk Mode” from now called CLLMode.

Problem is that we are loosing ranking on search engines, now the official norwegian pandemic site ranks higher than us.!. (gee! we link to them, but they dont pay us back with relinks, wonder why..?)

so I need all you net and blog folks out there to publish this link, maybe with some coments etc: http://www.fluwiki.no/phpBB2/

:-)

Olymom – at 13:26

I tried to email you Dem, but then it bounced back with a request to clear the spam blocker — then when I clicked on the request link, it told me that the time frame had expired — so it is hard to reach you. I’m at cefprice at comcast dotnet

Bird Guano – at 13:32

Definitely is taking some getting used to on the new forum.

Mosaic – at 13:41

Dem said: «We’re still playing… the yellow isn’t as readable. We have light blue, black and dark blue, and it is still friendly. But we can change the look. »

How about a nice soft, pleasant grey-green? Just kidding. ;-)

I’m very pleased this is happening. I think you will get more traffic than you think because of folks in the recent past having given up trying to get on here.

DemFromCTat 13:48

Olymom, i wrote you back. I go through the spamcatcher several times a day. Don’t worry about responding.

Kathy in FL – at 14:00

A favor for those of us that will be away from the computer for the next week or so due to US holiday season …

Since it appears that you will be changing discussion forums during that time, could you please put a prominent “we’ve move to” and the new address type message on the main forum page?

I can’t imagine trying to wade through a week’s worth of fluwiki posts to find the new site URL. <grin> And, I value the discussion that takes on FW too much to just intentionally fall out of the loop.

Thanks.

Hi, been lurking for 12 months, include me please address is nllo at hotmail dot co dot uk

DemFromCT - close thread – at 14:09

Kathy in FL – at 14:00

Announcements like that would go on the main forum page and also the Main page.

anon_22 – at 14:15

No, you didn’t close the thread.

amak – at 15:09

please include me stillamak@yahoo.com

Dr Dave – at 16:13

Color suggestions: teal green, Rhode Island red, flamingo pink, and canary yellow on a swan white background.

DemFromCT - close thread – at 17:01

hm… how about bluejay blue and white? because that’s what it is ;−0

DennisCat 17:20

Thanks, I like it. As long at the swan is right side up, it is fine no matter what color you use.

Kim – at 18:09

I’m very concerned about having to register and give my email address. I am already being bombarded with “returned” spam email that someone is sending out with my domain name, currently over 1,000 returned spam messages per day (that I didn’t even send, someone is spoofing my addy, but with “contact@mydomain.com” instead of “myusername@mydomain.com”). Will our email addresses really be secure if we register? If there is any doubt whatsoever, please let me know now so I can use a disposable yahoo email address to register.

Birdie Kate – at 18:17

ok I am lost - is there a new forum? and if so where is the link, I can’t find anything on the main page. Thanks

urdar-Norway – at 18:20

may I have a color peek? :)

urdar at fluwiki . no

anon_22 – at 18:22

INFOMASS – at 10:30

Please read my latest post at the ‘New Rumors’ thread. Thanks!

Surfer – at 18:23

Hey Kim

I just recently created a new yahoo email address. I post as surfer. New address is surferatwiki at yahoo dot com. That is what I may register as. You could easily become kimatwiki.

DemFromCTat 18:49

Birdie Kate – at 18:17

email me at demfromct@earthlink.net and I’ll send you the URL. We are still testing it.

Kim – at 18:09

Yes. It will not be visible anywhere.

DemFromCTat 19:24

Birdie Kate – at 18:17

We’ll post the URL once the shakedown cruise is complete, prolly on Sunday or Monday.

DemFromCTat 19:52

please note we will not cloose the old one 9this forum) for some time, to allow a transition.

gardner – at 20:16

In the transition period will some things be at one forum and other things at the other?

Watching in Texas – at 21:20

Dem - is there something specific that we need to put in the subject line when we email you? I emailed you this morning and have not gotten a reply.

AnnieBat 21:27

Hi fellow Wikians - I have been there and given it a go - the speed is just unreal - in fact I think we should limit the number of users (just kidding!).

I will be playing in my personal sandbox over there for a while, learning all about html - attempting to give credence to ‘you can teach an old dog new tricks’!

I am happy to help test and happy to move and happy to register and happy to learn html - given what we have here and the community we have created, to give us better access and greater ‘peace of mind’ (no more OMG where is the Wiki, why is it so busy, what has happened) it is the least I can do if I want to actively continue in the community.

Thank you good peoples for doing this for us. Back to my html tutorials …

DemFromCTat 21:59

Watching in Texas – at 21:20

I never got your email. Put beta test or flu wiki in the subject and mail to demfromct@earthlink.net

the new forum is GREAT – at 22:01

You should all come over and check out the new forum.

You’re guaranteed to feel a little like a kid who got a new chemistry set for his or her birthday!

It might be a little confusing in places, but you’ll catch on quickly because it is so much fun.

There is a list of recent comments so you can see what’s new. You can click one link to see if anyone has replied to one of your comments! Diaries (which is what threads are called there) can include funny polls!

And of course, it’s FAST. So come over and play!

-gardner

Watching in Texas – at 22:04

Okay Dem - I am trying it again!

DemFromCTat 22:06
cactus – at 22:11
I just sent another email, Dem. Maybe this one will go through.

Thanks for all the hard work this entails.
the new forum is GREAT – at 22:18

Actually “confusing” is the wrong word. Sorry! It’s just that there’s so much you can do there. Lots of options, lots of wonderful tricks that make things some much easier. You’ll have to learn a few tricks, but they aren’t hard, and everyone there will help you out if you have any questions!
