I never got your email. Put beta test or flu wiki in the subject and mail to demfromct@earthlink.net

Old link here. Anyone who wants to beta test the new Forum, email me at demfromct@earthlink.net

Comments:

Much faster than this forum. Positive.

The new forum is too complicated. We’re not all computer nerds and don’t need to get into the esoterics of html, etc. Just to post. Negative.

Should be click to navigate. New forum has Very complex nesting, etc. Not a natural way to read things.

It will take weeks of free time to figure it out.

I went into it with an open mind, but I’m having very mixed feelings.

Still the speed (but so far not stress loaded) is a HUGE improvement over fluwikie2.

Giving it a chance.

cottontop – at 22:24

Oh I don’t want to hear it’s too complicated! A squirrel knows more about computers than I do. I get computer anxiety when I have to learn something new. Hope it is idiot friendly.

gardner – at 22:37

It is more complicated than this forum — even much more complicated. But once you learn a few of these tricks, they’ll make things so much easier.

As an example:

You can click a link called “Your Comments,” and it gives you a list of the comments you made.

Did you ever wonder if Dem or Kathy in FL or someone responded to your query? Now you don’t have to search through the thread hoping to find it. Just click “Your Comments,” look down the list of your comments, and it will indicate if there was a reply. You can click on the subject line of that particular comment, and it will take you directly to the comment and show you the reply. Nice!

FloridaGirlat 22:49

One thing real quick… You can set up your view of the way you want to “see” the “threads” called diaries in many different ways…

Straight up and down… kin of like this one… with replies that show right under who your reply is to…

Newest, oldest… your choice; etc.

I only spent a couple of hours (not straight) playing around and was learning stuff every move….

For posts, and those who are not computer savvy… all you do is hit “reply” and post.

My prediction is that people will get used to it by using it and asking questions….

The html thingy is how you format …… but, it really is not much different than learning how to format here… More tomorrow…

ANON-YYZ – at 22:53

One person’s complexity is another’s versatility. LOL.

DemFromCTat 23:02

In a lot of ways, it’s easier than this place ;-)

It’ll take you a few minutes to figure out how to post. The rest will come with time.

I’m-workin’-on-it – at 23:08

Bird Guano – at 22:16 “It will take weeks of free time to figure it out. I went into it with an open mind, but I’m having very mixed feelings. “

Yep….I get bored if I have to figure out too much at a time & I don’t understand it at all…..if there was a table of contents maybe where all the threads/diaries are it might help, but I didn’t see one.

cottontop – at 22:24 “Oh I don’t want to hear it’s too complicated! A squirrel knows more about computers than I do. I get computer anxiety when I have to learn something new. Hope it is idiot friendly.”

You and I have GOT to be twins…..it’s too late, you now know it’s complicated…….anxiety is going to be high forever there for me…can we just stay here and run a little quiet thread or two with this nice font, instead of font that makes me squint? sigh.

gardner – at 22:37 “click a link called “Your Comments,” and it gives you a list of the comments you made…..”

I guess little by little we’ll learn, but I gotta feeling it’s going to slow down my computer life there….I know change is difficult, I used to give Dale Carnegie seminars on coping with change, but I just don’t know about how fast I will recover on this one.

One thing I think is that the whole page looks cluttered — a poster’s name is at the top of their post, and it seems it’s at the bottom too….I dunno.

DemFromCTat 23:10

cottontop – at 22:24

Here’s an analogy: you don’t need to know HTML in the new place any more than you need to know PmWiki markup to post here. If all you want to do is read and post, cool!

But, if you learn it, you can post cool tables like MaMa and Heather and AnnieB. So, if we talk about tables, or how to make your words green don’t be put off. It’s fun for some of us, but not important.

We have about 50 people over there now learning their way around. They’ll be available to teach you and everyone else when we open it to the public, which will be this weekend (I’m aiming for Sunday). But we’ll keep this one up for weeks.

I’m-workin’-on-it – at 23:17

Could you at least teach us over here? My playing around gave me a headache over there. It took me a little while to learn here, but every other word doesn’t have a link under it here.

Is there a ‘definitions’ section? I know what a tag is from Amazon, I know what we know is a thread here is a diary there. Was there a search button? I searched for one….:-) couldn’t find it — maybe I was just blind. It’s nowhere as simple as here to me yet.

cottontop – at 23:20

DemfromCT-

typing with colored letters. Now that’s worth learning! I’ve wanted to do that here. it’s worth the effort to learn this. I hope those 50 people are going to be prepared for me to drive them nuts. Hey, maybe by then I’ll know as much as the squirrel! It sounds like we will have a good support system.

I’m-workin’-on-it – at 23:20

I’ll tell you something that confused me…..when I clicked on some post (do we still call it that? or are we supposed to say comment or reply now) anyway to get back out to the threads again, I had to click my back button more times than I had to get into wherever I was — at least I couldn’t look at my drop-down list by my back button & readily see what to click on to get there again. Here I post, I back click once & I’m there.

I must be going crazy. I’m going to bed.

Bronco Bill – at 23:40

I’m-workin’-on-it – at 23:17 --- Once you’re over on the new Forum, check out my diaries. I’ve opened up a “Sandbox” for people to play in (please clean up after yourself. :-) )

Try some of the HTML commands and the ways to make your view look a little more like it does here by changing the “nesting” to “threading”.

cottontop – at 23:44

BB-

Have you opened up the lounge, and brought the RWFK?

DemFromCTat 23:45

I’m-workin’-on-it – at 23:20

There are simple things to learn. Did you know that if you click on the birds to the top left, the picture, it always takes you to the main page? The same system exists at the new forum! The picture of the birds is on every page in the Forum and is the easiest way to go ‘home’.

A post can be a reply (like I’m writing now) or a thread (diary), so using two terms instead of one actually is helpful.

Bronco Bill – at 23:46

Have you opened up the lounge, and brought the RWFK?

Not yet. Didn’t want to get sand in the glasses! We may save it for “Opening Day”! ;-)

DemFromCTat 23:48
I’m-workin’-on-it – at 23:17
Could you at least teach us over here?

Absolutely!!

Here are some other tips:

The menu box in the R upper corner has the word Home at the top. it appears on every page. Click on it to go to the main page.

On the right is a search box. It’s at the bottom, but we can move it higher if you wish.

cottontop – at 23:50

Excellant!!

I’ll bring some dehydrated krispy creams.

Lisa the GP – at 23:53

It is more complicated than here. This translates to it being more flexible, ultimately.

For people who are not at ease with board stuff and don’t have a lot of time to figure it out—

When you log on for the first time using your computer-generated password the first thing you’ll want to do is change it to something you can remember. In the upper right there’s a blue outlined box. Go down to the item saying Yourname’s Page.

In the mid top area of this page is a line of several blue commands in a row. Rightmost of these is ‘profile’. Click on this, and an additional line of blue commands will appear below the first grouping. Rightmost of these is email/password. Click this to get to the area to change your password; you’ve seen utilities like this before.

To get back out, go up to that upper right hand blue outlined box again. Pick Main for the main page, or diaries for a listing of the threads that have been posted in chronological order.

For our purposes, ‘diary’ there is equivalent to ‘thread’ here. Push ‘discuss’ to read the whole thread, not just the teaser.

“Comments” are the posts within a thread, and making them is pretty obvious; most people should be able to figure out the comments in one or two tries. The only ‘tricky’ part is if you push the ‘reply’ right under a comment, you’re replying to the comment and that’s the way it is threaded. If you want to reply to the main post of the thread, pick the ‘reply’ that is in one of the grey-background lines at the beginning and ending of the collection of comments. This sounds complicated in text but is pretty obvious when you look at the page.

18 November 2006

cottontop – at 00:00

Lisa the GP-

Your making my head swimm. You lost me when you said “a password you can remember..” ;-) Think I stay in the sandbox.

It sounds complicated, but when I’m actually there, and I get stuck, and stuck, I’ll figure it out, or send out a distress call that cottontop is stuck in the sandbox!

Bronco Bill – at 00:01

Lisa the GP – at 23:53 --- One of the best explanations yet. Thank you…

Bronco Bill – at 00:02

cottontop – at 00:00 --- cottontop is stuck in the sandbox!

Please stay clear of the pooper scooper!

DemFromCTat 00:09

Here’s a screenshot of my personal page. Read Lisa the GP’s description.

To get back out, click on the pic of the birds ;-)

gardner – at 00:10

On Comments. There are two ways of doing it. If you want to say something about the subject of the diary itself, you click on “Post a Comment.” If you want to reply to something someone else said, you click on “reply” right at the bottom of their comment itself. Your comment will appear indented immediately under theirs, so it will be clear to everyone that you were responding to them.

This will eliminate the need to write “DemFromCT at 6:42″ or whatever.

This “nested” layout may seem confusing at first, but you’ll get used to it soon. After all, the layout in this forum horrified me at first. I couldn’t imagine how any of you could follow a conversation. It seemed every thread had 3 or 4 conversations going on at the same time, the comments all shuffled together. One person responding 10 comments later. I kept having to scroll back to see who was saying what, kept losing my place. Made my head hurt. :-( But I got used to it quickly enough. :-)

Note that we will all hit the wrong button occasionally (especially at first and especially after some RWFK!) and our posts will end up in the wrong place. Then you can just reply to your own comment and point out where it was supposed to go. Happens easily and easily straightened out.

gardner – at 00:11

I hope that’s somewhat clear.

DemFromCTat 00:13

btw, you can clearly see the search function I’m-workin’-on-it was lookng for - it’s there ;-)

cottontop – at 00:13

Yuck!!

Is it already today? Don’t you people ever sleep?

DemFromCTat 00:17

re gardner’s comments, there is a “post a comment” or a “reply”. Reply gets you a comment directly under and to the right of the comment you are replying to. Post a comment puts it at the very bottom.

But… if you don’t like that cool feature, you can turn it off!

cottontop – at 00:31

Dem, do you have a panic button?

Seriously, that’s not to bad. Thanks for taking the time to show us.

AnnieBat 00:35

Hey folks - the big advantage is you can create your personal sandbox and have a good play without ‘embarrassing’ yourself in public so to speak. I am going to learn the html stuff because, as DemFromCT has already mentioned, I get hooked on making tables and formatting … But I was able to comment and reply (as illustrated above) as soon as I went in there - cool!

Also, whenever you make a comment you can preview what you have done before being committed to it - also very cool!

And they (the clever ones over there that is) have already tried loading pics and maps and stuff to see how they look and it is all good.

When the new site first starts up it will take a while I guess to get all the Diaries (threads) established such as they are here but I am sure a few willing hands can resolve that in no time - I am sure that will be discussed by DfCT and co closer to the grand opening.

And the most important thing, the swans are still swimming upright over there too ;-)

anonymous – at 00:57

there should be a default configuration for newbies, how to start, read and post as here or as in a typical forum without all the features. Then from time to time they can try to figure out new features or overtake other people’s configurations

Clawdia – at 01:12

Actually, I’m feeling pretty dumb right about now . . . and old, too (as in, sometimes it really is hard for old dogs to learn new tricks . . . ) - faults the dog far more than the trick, of course.

DemFromCTat 01:13

anonymous – at 00:57

It doesn’t work that way. Although reading and replying to posts is very easy, it’s different than here.

gardner – at 01:14

As far as HTML goes. HTML isn’t necessary, but IF you want to start on it, you can try this. The things that I imagine most people might want to use are these (probably the only ones I’ll use 99% of the time):

to put things in bold: <b>word you want bold</b> to put things in italics: <i>word you want italicized</i>

The angle brackets < > tells the computer it is your instructions for what you want done. The ‘b’ or ‘i’ is for bold or italics, obviously, and the slash mark tells the computer where you want the bolding or italics to end.

To make a link, I think you can just post the URL (I think the system abbreviates it so it doesn’t cause sidescroll). Somebody correct me if I’m wrong about that!!!

To make a link in HTML type this:

<a href=“http://www.fluwikie.com”>The name you want to appear as a highlighted link</a>

The code itself for that is this:

<a href=“ “> </a>

You put the URL between the quotation marks (regular double quote marks) in the first part and pick the name you want before the </a>

It will appear on the screen as The name you want to appear as a highlighted link

I hope that’s clear.

gardner – at 01:20

And I want to note that I’m not a math/science/computer geek type. I’m a literature/history/philosophy type. Computers are not natural to me. On the GRE’s my math score was abysmal. (But that didn’t matter — that much — for my field!) :-)

Jefiner – at 03:29

Give it a chance, folks. I have been playing around over there, and so far I have configured my display preferences to flat-threaded (the indents were driving me nutz) with oldest to newest displayed first. I have to learn the html, but really, to post there, you don’t need to know it. Dem has been extraordinarily helpful (and busy! drinking a lot of coffee there, Dem? :-), as well as Bronco Bill, so if questions come up, there is always a mod to ask.

Style stuff will no doubt get worked out over time.

anonymous – at 04:06

drinking a lot of coffee there, Dem? :-)

Don’t even ask. ;-)

gs suggests you think of a tag as a keyword or phrase that will help you with diary searches.

BeWellat 04:20

DemfromCT - thanks, I got your email. But when I tried to reply to get through the automatic spam blocker, it said something had expired. I’ve been having a spot of trouble with my email for another unrelated reason.

Maybe you could email me again tomorrow sometime, at your convenience? TIA!

Watching in Texas – at 07:50

Dem - I just emailed you a third time. Maybe I can hope for the “third time’s a charm” and you will get this email. Help me…..I want to go play in the new sandbox. If you do not get this email, Bronco Bill has my email address - can he send it to you and then you email me with the new address for the new forum??

DemFromCTat 08:39

Will do. I don’t understand the internets… didn’t get the email.

Hey, WIT try this: send to forumadmin at fluwikie.com

DemFromCTat 08:40

Ah, and a glossary term to add:

Watching in Texas – at 08:45

Dem at 08:39 - nope, me neither. What I really want to know is - where the heck did those emails go?

I emailed Bronco Bill and asked him to forward my email address to you. Now, if he just gets that email…..

DemFromCTat 08:49

do try the alternate email..set up for that purpose.

anonymous – at 08:52

Dem, maybe you should change your email. This is not the first time that you didn’t receive emails.

DemFromCTat 09:03

I get tons of email, thanks. It happens, but the alternate is forumadmin at fluwikie.com.

DemFromCTat 09:45

okcinder – at 09:36

I’m scared!

Of what?

I’m-workin’-on-it – at 10:09

okcinder – at 09:36 TOO FUNNY!!!

I knew exactly what you meant! :-) Wouldn’t have had to have asked — thanks for the good laugh.

I was going to just scroll down to the bottom here (without reading up above), sigh a heavy sigh and tell you all that I have 2 screens up and I’m ready to learn with a positive attitude & saw that post — you know, so WHAT if we screw up a few times, I guess those people already excelling over there on the new thingie know us well enough to be patient with us for some unknown length of time, and we HAVE discovered that most of us here are supposed to be above average IQ AND avid readers, so lets pull up our bootstraps & see what we can do today……I got tickled at BB’s comment about the sandbox over there, not because it was funny but because I’d already BEEN there yesterday and it hadn’t helped, but maybe it’ll make more sense today.

Here we go!

Bird Guano – at 10:18

Ya, that’s fine if you have the time to re-learn everything.

Some don’t

urdar-Norway – at 10:19

The main advantge i can see now, it taht this new software will be a powefull tool to get work more organised and continus. the “diary” may works as following.

person A starts a diary on a subjekt, lets say irland. he/she then starsts with som text and information. Replys adds information, and A then is able to re-edit the first post, adding /deleting/ altering the info. And its very easy. In that way the replys will be the dynamic “talk” about the issue, with the start as the “summary / produckt”. This is very good, because the “owner of the tread may keep the subject intention of the tread, preventing floating away.

What i did not find was info on “last edited” we should need that. started info, and edited info. If diary start is edited it will not be recognisced by the system as new, so bumping to gain attention will maybe be a tool we take along from this forum.

Here is also something to look out for, when posible to edit the content, the replys may loose their relevance. Probably there wll be a eticette for this after a while.

So organising the work will be brilliant. The social part maybe be different. A “diary” is as the name implies a little lonely feeling thing.. its not like here, a feeling of beeing in the current flow. The flow socialicing will take place in the “reply” treads like a “open tread”. Now we will have the posibility to reply directly to posters, (its a visible hiearchy that shows what reply on what post) this may have a learning curve. Shall i reply to a reply? or shall I reply to the general subjeckt.? this may be made easer with some small estehitic shanges in the setup emphasising the “reply to the general subject more than the “ reply to a reply butto that is right in front of you. Like here the general reply is on the bottom of the tread.

May I sugest changing the term “diary” into “post” maybe? or something that sounds more like a soap box ? english terms are not my strong side :-)

.

Watching in Texas – at 10:20

Dem - I got your email and Bronco Bill’s email with 2 seconds of each other. Weird. I emailed my sister one time and she got the email a week later. Where had it been?? Thanks for the assist. And thanks for the reminder of the alternate email address for you, I had forgotten about it! Looking forward to playing in the sandbox with my friends:-)

I’m-workin’-on-it – at 10:21

Dem, I love you but why do I have to meet your parents? :-)

Seriously, I just ran across that under your name everywhere (parent/reply). Does that have something to do with the indention feature?

Thanks for letting me know I can click on the swans to get back to the main page ….. and thanks for all the info up above that I’ still slowly working through!

anon_22 – at 10:37

urdar-Norway – at 10:19

May I sugest changing the term “diary” into “post” maybe? or something that sounds more like a soap box ? english terms are not my strong side :-)

I don’t know squat about how it works but I agree with your thought. I like the word “topic”. Let’s see if pogge can tell us…

DemFromCTat 10:43

LOL. First of all i have to share gs’ sig (you get to have one - it’s something that appears at the bottom of every single post of yours. NS1 might choose

gather and solve

Mine is:

it’s a feature, not a bug ;-)

but gs chose

I still don’t like it very much.

Anyway, look at the example at DemFromCT – at 00:17. A new feature is the ability to go directly to a post (like I just added - click the link). When you do, if you are at a ‘reply’, and that’s all you see on the screen (my answer),by hitting parent you go one up to see gardner’s question.

DemFromCTat 10:45

anon_22 – at 10:37

No, you can’t change those things. And since this software is used by thousands, they’d be confused if we start changing the terms when they come as new users. Like language, we need to learn how the greater world defines these words instead of inventing our own. Sounds harsh, but that’s how it is.

anon_22 – at 10:53

ok. i can live with that.

And my sig is

so what else is new ;-)
DemFromCTat 10:59

;-)

You can change the sig if it gets old or boring after a few months. And you don’t have to have one at all.

Watching in Texas – at 11:01

Oh, I have to come up with something catchy!

Dem and Bronco Bill - I’m in, I am so happy:)

I really like the preview feature (kind of a flame-retardant feature huh??)

newore – at 11:16

and did we mention….

NO SPAM

DemFromCTat 11:21

not yet. And it’s FAST!

Anyone who wants can come play now (it’s still getting bugs worked out) but please don’t think this is a two class system. We have about 55 Flu Wikians at the moment exploring the new site. The idea is that when we open it up in a few days, we’ll have a cadre of teaching assistants available to explain things, and we are writing How To posts; how to post, how to organize, etc.

It makes more sense to read them there… like gardner’s explanation above, unless you see it, it may just seem confusing. But once the site’s open for business, we’ll post them here as ordinary threads so you can read them in comfort and toggle back and forth.

Ocean2 – at 12:23

Yes it’s fast, but after a few good attempts it still doesn’t make any sense to me! I found this (old) forum style immediately easy to use; only searching was time-consuming.

I can see myself needing to spend lots! of time just to learn the new format and the new language(which I don’t really have), meaning less time to read and prepare. Already feelings of needing to keep up with the smart ones and being cut off from the information flow are arising….Ok, sob story over. Will keep trying!

How long before this side of the wiki is abandoned for the new format?

Demfromct: asdf: the first letters you learn to type (look at your keyboard). Used in a title when something is required, but you have nothing to say. What does this?!?! mean?

Ocean2 – at 12:32

Something else- on certain pages (?) one sees a revolving “Soap Box” logo. Is there a way to stop it from turning or remove it? It’s like the flashing, blinking advertisements on commercial sites- I get nauseated by the movement and have to cover it up by laying something over the monitor.. .Thanks.

gardner – at 12:37

Ocean2 – at 12:23

asdf are the 4 letters under your left fingers in a standard keyboard. (I can’t remember what keys I learned first. I hated learning to type and I’ve blocked it out :-) )

In the new forum, you saw that each comment you make has a subject line (like a title). Sometimes people can’t think of what they want to put in this subject line, so they just type “asdf.”

Since the new forum has a Recent Comments list on the right hand side, these subject lines will be handy to see what others are talking about. Subject lines like “HELP!” or “where’s Dem?” or “recipe for split pea soup” are always better than asdf if you have something important to say.

MaMaat 12:37

Just wondering, should the news summaries for the last bit be copied into a diary(thread) as an indew of sorts for reference? I’d hate for us to lose links to articles that could be important to refer to later…

and perhaps the same for the ‘Lookout Post’ threads…

Ocean2 had an excellent question ‘How long before this side of the wiki is abandoned for the new format?’

how much time do we have to access the information found here on the forum, I’m thinking too of lugon and others working on condensing forum threads into wiki entries.

MaMaat 12:39

‘indew’, I meant index of course:-)

I’m-workin’-on-it – at 12:43

Liz thanks for the clear explanation!!!

You’re all dears to lead us by the hands as we wobble along….I don’t know how big a pixel is, but is there a rule somewhere that says we can’t have text as big as over here? Remember that you’re dealing with a LOT of baby boomers — no matter what nationality — and we’re in reading glasses now!! You young squirts might want to spend hours posting or diarying or whatever in tiny print, but spell check or no, if I can’t see what I’ve typed, I’m doomed! I know, you might say ‘but we can get more on a page this way’…..I’d say so? You can get the entire Bible on the head of a pin but what’s that worth if you can’t read it without a lot of trouble. lordy, I’m beginning to sound like Hallmark’s Maxine! And I’m probably going to end up looking like her squinting this much! :-)

Now, up above, nesting/indenting….I get that overall….I click on something under an initial post to reply to it directly or I can reply to the replys that poster has gotten.

But what was gardner talking about turning off?

Clawdia – at 01:12 Actually, I’m feeling pretty dumb right about now . . . and old, too (as in, sometimes it really is hard for old dogs to learn new tricks . . . ) - faults the dog far more than the trick, of course.

Hit nail on head with that comment!

Guess I need to go find my ‘preferences’ section to learn something there!

Ocean2 – at 12:50

Thanks, gardner, I’ll study your reply carefully, LOL! I get the part about the keyboard letters, but why people wouldn’t know what to put in the subject line if they’re handy, THAT takes some research! Back to the new ‘two’!

gardner – at 12:55

I’m-workin’-on-it – at 12:43

on making text bigger, you might be able to do it right in your browser. I use Safari (I have a Mac), but I’m sure Internet Explorer and Firefox and others can do it to. Go to View and see if there is an option for making the text bigger.

I don’t remember saying anything about turning anything off, but I think in the new forum you can choose whether you want the “nested” comments or a straight list of comments arranged by time as in this forum. It’s automatically set for “nested” but you can go to your personal page (look for I’m-workin’-on-it’s Page in the top right corner), then choose Profile, then choose Comment Prefs, which gives you several options. I think the “Flat (unthreaded)” choice produces a simple list of comments arranged by the time they were posted.

Could someone kindly enlighten me as to how to find/access this new Forum II that I gather is being discussed?

Working on it: To make the test bigger just do this …. hold the control key down and at the same time move the ‘roll’ button on your mouse toward you. If you want to make the test smaller then just hold control button down and move the ‘roll’ button on mouse toward the monitor. Try it and let me know is it works for you.

Dem; I’m going to send another email to forumadmin as I guess you didn’t get mine fromlast nite.

Now everybody be gentle to me after all I do believe that I’m the oldest one on this forum

I used HTML abit selling on Ebay but I sure don’t like it. It requires too many key strokes and tends to make you lose your train of thought.

It requires too many key strokes and tends to make you lose your train of thought.

What I’m learning to do, to keep my train of thought, is to type out my comments, then go back and place my formatting markers where I want them. That way, my thoughts convey, and my HTML gets inserted where I want it…

Well, the View—text—largest attempt to change the font size only changes the size of the heading Flu Wiki Forum at the top of the page on the new forum and the same is true for holding down the control key and using the scroll feature on the mouse to change the size of the font….on the old forum it actually changes the text you’re reading. I’m doomed to squint.

Newname, I remember well the HTML on ebay — pain in the butt is what it was, but I learned some of it. Their new selling page is way so much easier.

Those of you who like large print, what is the screen setting of your monitor? The norm is 1024 by 768 pixels. I ask because I am using 800 by 600 pixels and it works fine for 99.9% of the sites I visit i.e. no horizontal scrolling required to read.

If you are using Windows XP, you can find your screen resolution by going to your desktop screen, and on an empty space on the screen:

- right click - select properties - select the tab called “settings” - look down on the left and you will see your current screen resolution. If you see 1024 by 768 pixels, move the slider bar left one notch to 800 by 600 pixels and then click on the “Apply” button.

Here’s a question google can’t help me with- what do you call the method of using bold, italics, underlining, colour, etc. on these threads? I’d like once and for all to learn how to do this- is there a website somewhere that explains them all? Thanks.

And thanks again to gardner- you one funny guy! (I am in charge) just cracked me up- LOL!

It’s called PmWiki markup. The new site uses HTML.

go to How To in the L sidebar, towards the bottom. ;-)

'''bold''' is bold.

Also, go to the wiki at www.fluwikie.com, find a page with the features and hit edit at the top right to see how it was done.

Where is the new forum? How do I get to beta test? From the sounds of it, it is like Dailykos? If so, good call!

Ottawa Guy – at 17:03

Oops, never mind. Found it at the top of this thread.

DemFromCTat 17:09

it is like Dailykos? If so, good call!

It is similar enough that you’ll feel right at home if you have been there.

Ottawa Guy – at 17:15

My user ID at dailykos is 18,000 or something close to that and yes, I’ve been a long term lurker there.

I sent in my request, hope it made it to you.

DemFromCTat 17:25

Got it, response on the way. We’re not the first in the universe to use this type of software, folks ;−0

Ottawa Guy, help people feel at home. ;-)

Ottawa Guy – at 18:01

Got the link and thanks. I registered but am still awaiting for my registration via email.

As Dem said, this is not new software (though it has evolved). You will all be comfortable with it in no time at all. In fact, I wager that in a month’s time, this old forum format will look quaint to almost all of us.

Best of all, no more cut and paste of comments to which you want to comment. I luv them trees!

will it be possible to maintain an archive of the posts ?

>>WIT, the control plus scroll key method still works on the new forum on my machine. I usually use Firefox, but it worked with Internet Explorer, too. Something must need adjustment in your preferences.

absolutely, for a long while. it may become read only, though.

newname – at 19:14

Dem - I sent 3 emails so far for the beta test site. Guess I’m doomed to just read these threads over and over.

Thanks

Done! DemfromCT
