Forum: Extensive 72 Hour How to Available

13 November 2006

ssol – at 21:03

I have mentioned in past posts a long paper (137 pages) written by Glenn Anderson, an LDS Bishop concerning 72 hour kits. He is a retired military with extensive field experience and wrote an outstanding essay on what was needed and especially WHY IT WAS NEEDED. This was of great value to me in developing my own list for Y2K and BF. It is too long to post so I am making it available to those who would like to read it.

It is currently in odt format. That is similar to MS Word but part of the Open Office Suite of free productivity tools from Sun. Downloading Open Office is free www.openoffice.org

If you prefer, I will convert it to a Word doc. Let me know or I’ll send an odt file.

Please email me at ssol1232005atyahoodotcom

Is this something we could ‘wikify’? See that thread and get some reviews then let’s get it organised.

I run a mac, a pdf would be best, sounds like a great doc. An ‘wilified’ version would be ideal!

I have sent them to everyone as of now. It is interesting to see that the Word doc is almost 1 MB, the pdf version about 500 KB and the odt file is 157 KB. All are the same document.

Tomo – at 22:47 Please send me you email address

KimT; nice document.

I thought this was very interesting. From page 12……..

Since my conversion and because of my World War II experiences, I now have a deep appreciation for the revealed plan of a year¹s supply for each member.

Frequently I am asked, ³What were the most valuable items in the days of starvation in Germany?²

As for what we needed, the food item we relied on most was vegetable oil. With a bottle of vegetable oil, one could acquire nearly every other desirable item. It had such value that with a quart of vegetable oil one could probably trade for three bushels of apples or three hundred pounds of potatoes. Vegetable oil has a high calorie content, is easy to transport, and in cooking can give a tasty flavor to all kinds of food items that one would not normally consider as food‹wild flowers, wild plants, and roots from shrubs and trees. For me and my family, a high-quality vegetable oil has the highest priority in our food storage, both in times of daily use and for emergency usage. ……

Thanks again ssol for sharing this.

thanks JWB, good stuff.

Could I have a copy in word please at Carrey in Virginia @ yahoo. com

ssol – at 15:35

JWB – at 12:46 Yes, I agree. Vegetable oil is a big part of our preps. Crisco is a poor alternative and rending animals won’t be much of an alternative for long - I read in another thread that in Georgia during the Depression the deer population was quickly reduced to zero. Shelf life of vegetable oils is 18–24 months.

This may be an excellent barter item early on - cooking grains and pasta without it would leave a lot to be desired.

I have a son with allergies and wish I could find bulk vegetable oil that is preserved with ascorbic acid rather than BHA, BHT etc…

We can all have access to it if you send it to DemFromCT or Dude. http://www.fluwikie2.com/pmwiki.php?n=Profiles.Profiles

They will put it in the FluWiki file project.

The LDS Preparedness Manual pdf link above is 237 pages but SSOL desribed ithe Glen Anderson authored guide as 137. Are they the same?

The link that KimT (@ 00:29) provided is awesome! Some may have seen parts of this information in other places, but this is the most comprehensive compilation that I have yet found. Great work and thank you!

The government of Canada just started broadcasting commercials this week, about “72-hour kits”. The reasons they cite are -vague. I guess they don’t want to panic the sheeple.

youngmom – at 14:54

I would be interested as well, either word or pdf would be fine. Thank you ssol. kyokotonashi@yahoo.com

Kim,

Gtreat link. I downloaded the pdf and printed out all 230 pages. I am now skimming through it. I bought a book awile back, Disaster Prep 101, and it appears these two have a lot in common. Almost word for word on some subjects.

Thanks again!
