Forum: China Dog Crackdown-A Good Idea

This is for thought, not advocacy on my part for the idea (I love and have owned many dogs, my primary pet choice). The China program in Beijing of ordering 1 dog per household and banning breeds taller than 14 inches (rabies infects all sizes) seems to me possibly done to prepare the urban area for a pandemic as much as rabies concerns.

Regardless of dogs’ ability to be a vector for H5N1, ownerless dogs (abandoned by owners ill, dead, or short on food) would probably be the most significant physical animal threat during this time (I’ve been chewed on a few times - its very difficult to stop a vicious dog). Also, entering homes to check for sick or dead owners is greatly complicated by the presence of defensive dog(s). The chinese order makes sense in its fashion - do consider this is a huge urban city too, not rural. Simple outdoor tasks or errands could be greatly complicated by dogs.

What do people think of this crackdown? Are the Chinese prepping? What should we do in our countries? If anything? What could a person do to be ready to defend against the certain presence of some very viscious dogs when TSHTF? Best weapons, sprays etc. (And I have to say, even a gun in my hand probably would not have helped me in the swift, surprise attacks I have experienced)…

For instance should communities plan on a kill on sight order for ownerless and homeless dogs and/or form hunting parties if there is a problem? What should be done with a defensive dog(s) when entering a sick (immobile) person’s home and their dog is stopping you? Would helpless people on average rather be left alone than to have a health team perhaps kill their dog to get in to help them (this is assuming you are unconscious or incoherent? In a time short on resources and manpower, these choices may be deemed necessary.

I wish the question mark after the topic title “A good idea?” had remained. That was my intention….

(Topic title’s don’t take ? marks)

Another local issue better discussed now… hungry dogs going into feral packs are not what any age demographic needs

and then what will people do with the animal bodies? Some areas also have coyotes or even wolves, and any carnivore seems able to get H5N1 -what other scavengers are problems? Black bears, ‘gators, what local critters am I overlooking, here or abroad?

Notice that owned and feral dogs are already a deadly danger in some areas; tragic. Need dog culls, and, spaying neutering (and dog/owner training?) programs in many places.
