Just out of curiosity would they have any records buried somewhere of mass bird die offs just prior to 1918.
Is not cut and dried just looking for some more possible clues to the timeline we are looking at.

You would need to look at the Office of Biological Survey records, this agency predated the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service, at the time they were in the Department of Agriculture. A lot of early field notes/records were stored at the Smithsonian. This would be a good place to start looking.
