You might want to watch Nova program just starting on Flu and mass extinctions.
thanks, jim!
what channel?
LOL that was a stupid question. Never mind.
Had to reach into the wayback for that. PBS, whatever local station that is for you.
Thanks Jim!
They’re discussing the 1918 pandemic, and how birds harbor and carry viruses. They just defined a pandemic as a novel virus, and have begun speaking about the “avian flu.”
Was just flippin’ channels and came across NOVA program on Smokey Hills Public Television. Very interesting!
that’s it? Is this some kind of science news program? They’re onto robots now.
The explanation of how H’s and N’s work, using the analogy of lock & key and illustrated with cartoons, would be a great segment to instruct any audience from the 8th grade on up about why we are worried about the H5N1 virus.
Not on here for another 1 1/2 hours. Thanks for the headsup.
Bummer! Got here just in time for it to be over.
I watched the whole show on avian flu.It was short but informative. There was no real sense of emergency,or serious peril about to fall on us like an atomic bomb.Whatever they taped they edited out the fear factor. It will not recruit many preppers.
Maybe we are paranoid to be preppiny steadily.Sometimes I wonder!!
The subliminal effect of relating mass extinction to bird flu to robots to replace people cann’t be just coincidental? or can it?

PBS does frequent repeats (at least in my area), so you may still have opportunity to watch it. Additionally, many NOVA episodes eventually become available in the PBS-dot-org store for $19.95 USD.
giraffe – at 20:50 Sorry you missed it! It may be available later through the Nova site or Google.
It was interesting but must have been produced before the H-H outbreaks and the new info on its changes enabling it to be more easilly transmitted. Too bad…another wasted opportunity to alert folks to begin to protect their families just in case…
What little bit I did catch was informative. DH likes to surf, which is the only reason I was able to catch what part that I did. For once, the surfin’ was a good thing. <grin>
Check out site http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/sciencenow/
What Pixie said; best I’d seen the H/N part explained; schools and municipalities should be using it (-‘twould be an improvement.) They could see it on the website.
(He asked for feedback about the show, too.)
You can ask questions of the expert team that recreated the 1918 virus at the pbs link i previously posted and starting nov 22 you can see the episode on-line at the site
PBS American Experience Film “Influenza 1918″, about 60 minutes long is an excellent resource. For people who have trouble conceptualizing what a pandemic would be like now, this film brings it home.
I was speaking to an older patient today on a totally different subject when he told me about his grandfather. He was a wagon driver and picked up dead bodies from the panflu.
One day he was picking up the bodies-the next day he was dead. He was only in his 50′s-and had 22 children.
There is a very interesting flash servey with arguments and counter arguments for and against recreating the 1918 virus that you can find at the link i posted and then clicking on the 1918 flu icon
The segment is supposed to be available to view on-line later today 11/22/06

Not sure if the above is a link or a cut and paste address (I seldom post, mostly lurk, but did work for a PBS station at one point)
Dragonlady – at 08:41
Well then, welcome aboard!
Look forward to hearing from you in the future!
What lead you here?
A link from a news story about a year ago.
I lurk, therefore I am.
Dragonlady,Lots of stores are now getting on the prep bandwagon.Any word at yours?Seems like same old same old there to me.
Unfortunately, no. They are only focused on the holidays. Working 6 days every week until the end of the year, just like all the other schmucks in retail.
