Colombia: Epidemic Hits Nomadic Amazon Tribe
The nomadic Nukak tribe, who fled their jungle homes after being caught up in Colombia’s civil war, have been hit by a flu epidemic.
Almost a quarter of the tribe have fallen ill, and at least three have been taken to hospital in the nearest town.
Thanks BRM Mom - I have got the link ready for the News Summary ;-)
You’re welcome, AnnieB! Thank you for the kick arse summary you do every night. I’ve been helping a friend pack her and three children up and leave her husband this week. I’ll really be hitting the digging around this weekend just for a break from reality.
Wretched continuation of the Nukak story. This story looks like regular flu, but imagine this poor leader’s frustration and pain at not being able to feed his people, not being able to meet his responsibilities, and being faced with 25% infection rate of the flu. (Reminds me of Dr Dave’s virologist with his suicide pills in the New Rumors thread.

BACKGROUND NOTES - ARGENTINA
Argentina exports sizeable amounts of poultry products to Côte d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast). Highest seasonal consumption in Côte d’Ivoire is from November to February. It is supposed that one would have to look closely at Côte d’Ivoire if BF hits Argentina in the winter 2006.

AGRIBUSINESS - [11/13/2006 - 15:44] - Chicken exports generated US$ 310 million in October
São Paulo - Brazil exported 255,892 tonnes of chicken in October, a reduction of 1.61% when compared to the same month in 2005. […] The shipments generated US$ 2.571 billion, a reduction of 10.15% when compared to the period from January to October last year. […] According to the Abef, the reduction in exports was caused by a reduction in the global consumption of chicken meat due to cases of avian flu in countries in Europe and Asia, aligned to the appreciation of the Brazilian real against the dollar, which has reduced the profitability of international sales of the Brazilian product.
