Forum: Battery Info for Brinkmann Lanterns

Hey, anyone who can help….I was going to try to locate a battery replacement for the 3 Brinkmann solar lanterns I just bought, just to have a backup and have run into some difficulty.

First of all the company is in CHINA!

Second, I didn’t see the exact same battery on their website now. They have 2 that are similar.

Here’s what’s written on the batteries in my lanterns now:

Sealake sealed lead acid

6V 4.5Ah/20 Hr.

Use 7.35V-7.50V

Standby 6.76–6.85V

Max charging current 1.3A

Is there another brand of battery that anyone knows of that can be bought here in the states that would work?

The connectors are wires wrapped in plastic that slip over the “l” shaped pin sticking out of the battery.

From the info you provided, there should be a number of sources of batteries like that readily available. I’m right in the middle of working just now, but if you wait till later this evening, I’ll post some links to batteries that I think will fill the bill. The one problem is that I don’t know the shape/dimensions, so there may be a few that meet the electrical specs but don’t fit the space.

Also, if you want, just ask and I’ll explain what all of those numbers mean (and why they’re important).

okeydoke and I’ll measure the size and post!

To get things started, here are links to several sites that sell such batteries. I have used all of these suppliers, and I have been happy with them (I don’t have any business connection with any of them):

All Electronics Corp.

MCM Electronics

Marlin P. Jones Associates

From the above, I hope that you can see that such batteries are a common and easy to find product if you know the right supply houses. There are many other sizes and shapes of these batteries, and other suppliers. Lets start with these and see if any of these float your boat (or, perhaps, Light your night, as the case may be).

Hey, I said I’d get back with you and then got into trouble not doing something else I was supposed to take care of so……I’m late but I’m back.

I’ll check the links above tomorrow & really appreciate the leads!

Just so you’ll know, the Sealake battery is:

4″ tall

2–3/4″ wide

1–3/4 + 2 little lines (what’s that come to? Guess I can’t read a ruler anymore I’m so bleary-eyed right now)

It looks like the batteries listed by MCM and All Electronics are dead on the size you measured. The one at MPJA may be a tenth or so taller, but that may just be the height of the contacts.

Looks like you have several chocies out there to choose from.

Sounds like this is a standard size. Given that, I went to a few other suppliers that are standard in the industry, looking for better deals and some detailed informaton. So, Mouser, which is one of the main suppliers for folks like myself in industry has one in the catalog that I think is the exact fills-the-bill for you. here are a cou0ple of aditional links I think you will find interesting, educational, edifying, death-defying and altogether agreeable for your purposes:

Data Sheet telling you more than you ever thought to ask about the battery

Link to On-line catalog page for the battery in question

Did you happen to take your lantern apart and look at the lightbulb yet? My is not as bright as it was. I finally charged my lantern from a wall socket as it’s been cloudy here for days and days. I was wondering if the colman lightbulb was the same.

Eccles – at 00:18 Thanks for the battery links!

Just so ya know, the coleman 6 inch 4 watt fluorescent tubes (found in the camping section at wallmart) work in the brinkman lantern. I think I had a bad bulb so I took it apart and tried the coleman bulb and it works fine now.

Hubby suggested this place for a replacement battery. If they don’t carry what you need, you can give them the dimensions and ratings and they can make a battery for you.

He uses this place all the time for work (fixing medical equiptment) says they are EXTREAMLY relible.

ok forgive spelling, its past my bedtime.

silversage & Carrey, thank you both, I got distracted with my cat’s well care checkups then their dental care & one of my babies died after his dental work — unforseen condition — I’ve just gotten offtrack & can’t seem to get back on.

The Coleman 6 inch 4 watt fluorescent tubes also are the right size for the Swiss Gear lanterns. It would be wise to have spares on hand.

I purchased one of these brinkmann lanterns last week at Walmart. The next day I went to another Walmart and they had three on the shelf. When I tried to purchase them the clerk told me they scanner would not process them because they had been recalled. Does anyone know why?

Mari – at 21:11

I just bought one today at WalMart. Maybe this one is from a different production run.

re: recall

Does anyone know why the Brinkmann lanterns with the solar panels are being recalled? Wal-Mart wouldn’t sell them to me, today - said check with the company for details. Brinkmann doesn’t answer their recall “hotline” after 5 pm EST.

I see that their outdoor solar lights have been recalled because sunlight through the beveled glass has caused mulch fires.
