Forum: Invitation to Chat

16 November 2006

farm girl – at 20:22

Hopefully it’s okay to post this:

I’ve been wanting to chat with so many of you here at the wiki that I started a new forum with a chat room. The link to it is (in a roundabout way): http://tinyurl.com/sefa5

I don’t want to compete with fluwiki in any way, but I thought it might be nice if we had a simple method of chatting live with each other, especially during scary times. You will have to register to chat though, I can’t find a way around that yet.

If someone knows how to get in touch with some of the names we don’t see here much more, please give them the link. Since they aren’t here anymore, maybe they can post information on the new forum so we can still benefit from their knowledge. I’ve tried to it up so that it can be used if need be.

This is not a “compete”, and don’t feel at all inhibited about posting ;-)

Live chat is not a feature we support.

Thanks Dem! The lack of chat has been driving me up a wall for a while now. I figured out how to do it here once, but then I found out nobody was there!

If you want to become a registered user but want to maintain your anonymity there are ways to do this. First, start up a new email account with a company that offers free accounts (yahoo, etc.) This step isn’t really necessary but it will add an extra layer of protection. Second, register your ezboard account with very limited information or a pen name. You don’t have to accept any offers if they put you through to that screen. Once you are an ezboard member, click on the My Control Center link, then click on Edit Profile. Make everything private and don’t add any biographical details. If you do this you will be able to post messages and chat but still maintain your privacy. You can leave your Private Messages intact if you wish to communicate with other members without giving out an email address.

Well, I’m-workin’-on-it — signing up that is. I’ll ask our ALABAMA thread folks to do the same.

farm girl – at 09:50

Thanks IWOI! Everyone is invited.

It was really nice to chat with you this morning.

Farm Girl,

Don’t spend much time developing your ezboard. I’ve been part of the ezboard community for 7 years and posted on numerous related ezboards, including a number of private boards and boards with invisible forums. Live chat is very nice although the maximum allowed in chat in any one time is 25.

Ezboard is being phased out and being replaced by Yuku which currently is in beta testing and has been for over a year. Existing ezboards will be migrated to Yuku but I have my doubts that this will occur without a hitch.

Ezboard has been great but Yuku sucks big time as, unlike ezboard, it has been structured to appeal to the myspace.com type crowd.

It’s a pity because ezboard would have been a perfect place during a pandemic for those in isolation to socialize with on-line friends with some degree of privacy.

Irene at 10:41 - For real? This is what I’ve read:

As far as I know, no where have I read that board will be “forcibly” moved. There is no clear cut off date for when ezboard will shut down - if ever. It is no time soon though. Boards can and will be able to move to yuku when they wish but there is no plan to mass migrate all current ezboards. (posted 11/3/06)

I’ll see if I can find more information about this.

Irene – at 11:24

Yes, Farm Girl, I know the TPTB at ezboard said that they won’t force anyone to move. However, once Yuku is out of beta testing, I doubt that TPTB will be fixing any problems that occur at ezboards and there have been a number of problems that have occurred over the years.

The worst problem was in the spring of last year when ezboard was hacked. Many boards found most if not all of their threads deleted. Ezboard tried but could not recover many of them. Ezboard does not have the ability to allow board owners to back up threads in any easy way - although plans were in the works to create such an ability before Yuku was announced. I felt very sorry for boards that lost all their history, particularly the specialized self-help boards which had created libraries of information to help their members over the years.

farm girl – at 11:38

I remember when the boards were hacked, it was horrible. Was that just last spring? I went to another community that I’m a member of and found the whole thing down. Thankfully that board didn’t lose their threads. I’ll talk to the admin of that site and find out what she did to keep everything safe.

Thanks for the heads up on all this.

I’m-workin’-on-it – at 11:55

For right now it’s a great tool we can make use of indefinitely! :-)

Thanks I’m-workin’-on-it!

I fiddled around with the setting on the ezboard a bit and figured out something really neat. If you want to come check it out (today and maybe longer if everyone behaves), you can post messages without registering an account with ezboard. I put up some half-a$$ed directions in the Announcements section. You can’t chat unless you are a registered member because it’s either impossible or I’m too stupid to know how to do it. Sorry about that.

Anyhow, feel free to come visit whenever you like. If you want to post something, I’d be grateful for help starting the board.

Hey Girl, I’ve been off the computer most of the day but the couple of times I’ve been here I was researching the new fluwiki forum……I gotta tell you ezboard is EASY compared to that place over there. I know we’ll learn, but golly….

I’m supposed to be watching a ballgame right now — the playoff between my husband’s team and my team! My team just scored!

I may be over at your site later tonight — right now I need to quit this and work on questions for tomorrow — some of our Alabama group is getting together tomorrow and I wanted to have some little exercises for us to do to both get to know each other and to teach the spouses a little about their favorite prepper if possible. I want to do a Q&A thing — sort of like the Newlywed game - where spouses didn’t know what their spouses would say — but also incorporate questions for the ‘singles’ that will be there. Also want to give them words that they have to work into either a cheer or a prepper song with lyrics to the tune of Row Row Row Your Boat or something like that.

Will do an “identify” this item thing, will do a make words out of the words A FLUWIKIE PREPPER ROCKS! thing, maybe a couple of other things. But I gotta get my questions written & divided up so that it’s fair for both singles & married couples.

Gotta run to the dollar store lafter the game to get ink pens & notepads for everyone, then cook steaks since one or the other of us will be celebrating our team’s win! Fortunately the loser also gets a steak!

Just a heads-up, everything got changed around a bit. The direct link to the forum is http://tinyurl.com/vkd26

Nobody needs to register if they want to post, but chatting does require registration.

I got permission from Dr. Niman to post links to his news and commentary articles.

I can’t find a good picture for the main page, so there is still an annoying little X.

I’ve come to the conclusion that I must be color blind. If anyone can think of a good color scheme let me know.

Shameless bump - sorry for that.

I just wanted to let everyone know that the forum is still there, still free, and still not requiring registration to post comments or create new topics. If you want to come and critique it for me in your spare time, I’d be grateful for any and all input. Dem, that includes you, you know far more about all this stuff than I ever will. I know you’re probably pretty busy with the new forum though, it’s coming along better and better every day!
