What is the best way to set up the ‘comment preferences’on my profile page? I have tried to do oldest to newest, newest to oldest, threaded, nested, but I can’t get a format that is easy for me to read. I posted something two days ago. Posted something else today and both comments are right next to each other however I didn’t reply to myself. I know others have posted on that thread since then. Here’s what I would like, as a casual user: I want to open a diary and see what has been said first and all of the replies since that time in chronologial order. Is there a way? Basically like it is here. I have read the how to navigate information but I guess I am an old dog and there are a lot of new tricks on the new FW. I need customer support!

Hi there On the Fence and Leaning

I know when I first started over there I struggled a bit with finding comments and replies …

I found, initially, I would go to my page and get my comments and ‘sort of track’ if they had got replies. That was a ‘quick’ way to see if people were answering me.

What I have done is leave my comment preferences as the default (nested). Now, I check a Diary to see if there are new comments - the system tracks for you and will show (in red) for any diary if there are comments you haven’t seen. I open the diary and just scroll on down, looking for the red [new] sign and pick up again from there.

I appreciate that, if you are not there regularly, there will be a myriad of [new] for you but then you start to get selective on which Diaries you are going to check anyway …

If that doesn’t help you, tell me so and I can do some more ‘testing’ for you.

ALSO, remember there is a difference between a ‘comment’ entry and a ‘reply’ entry - this will result in some comments showing directly underneath each other even when others have made entries within the same Diary - they may have posted a ‘reply’ to a ‘comment’ elsewhere in the Diary - the ‘replies’ show as an indent.

For example

A Diary might have:

A person, on reading Comment A, wants to make further remarks on that specific item, so chooses “Reply” directly attached to that Comment. Another person may choose the same thing. And another person chooses to “Post a Comment”, giving us comment D, which also receives some replies, and so on.

The Diary layout will now look like this (in nested (which is the default) mode)

So, if you had posted comments B and C, they still appear ‘beside’ each other.

Oremus has about 10 polls going on over at the new site with interesting questions. Come on over and take them! I’d be interested to see what everyone thinks. You have to register for a new id first. Just register, then check your e-mail to see what your temporary password is, and get on the site. It takes a little adjusting, but it’s not bad. Come on in, the water’s fine!

Karina – at 09:51

Here’s a link to the polls: (Hope it works)

If you want the comments to look like here, go to your personal page > profiles >comment pref and set it to (flat) unthreaded). You can also set oldest first (like here) or newest first.

anonymous – at 10:15

I just came back from the new site and felt totally lost.I hope I can keep track of the news in the least over there.

bluesfan – at 10:29

I actually find that News is one of the most easily accessed threads, being that it is posted front and center (in the center section on the Home(front)page), and all I need do is click on the words “There’s more…” to read the entries.

anonymous – at 10:40

I hate the new fluwikie site. It just seems like it’s a bunch of personal pages(diaries) and there is no longer a fluwiki community. Is this to mimic Monotrome’s site? I find the instructions just as impersonal and uninformative as the site itself and at this point it’s just easier to go to one of the many other flubie communities to find out what is going on than to come here and spend my precious time going in circles. IMHO, Someone has made a big mistake here in changing things so drastically and I think ultimately it will lead to the demise of what had been the mothership of all websites leading the flubie community. I guess, another one bites the dust. Too bad. :>{

anonymous – at 10:15

If all you want is news, just enter the site here:

http://www.newfluwiki2.com/tag.do?subjectId=9

it’s as easy as that.

anonymous – at 10:59

Break out all of the instruction threads into their own separate area.

Mixed in with the flu news makes it a royal pain in the ass to navigate and read when you have limited cycles, or are multi-tasking.

Get the non-flu stuff OFF of the new board.

“I just came back from the new site and felt totally lost.”

Ditto. But then I’m a bit of an “old dog”, technologically speaking. New tricks can be a good thing though - guess I’ll just keep practicing ;)

anonymous – at 11:10

Not enough simple navigation aids, too many bells and geek whistles.

DemFromCTat 11:19

anonymous – at 10:40

Well, let’s put it this way…

I don’t think that’s the end of the community. Further, there are always different ways to improve things.

diana – at 11:21

At first look see,I thought the background harder on the eyes, now it seems elegent. but more complex than this computor illiterate needs. It like any electronic gadget my husban always bought, top of the line, many functions. I only wanted basic stuff and didn’t give a damn about the rest. He may have used the extras, and enjoyed the fiddling around. I just felt irritated.Turn it on, and turn it off is my speed on everything electronic.

Bird Guano – at 11:28

Traffic stats do not a user experience make.

Half of those are probably people hitting the site multiple times, just to navigate.

But your decision is made and implemented, and this is my last comment on the subject before I irritate too many people.

anonymous – at 11:30

anonymous at 10:40 is me, naomi(only this post and none of the other anonymous posts)

I am at my husband’s computer and did not mean to post as anonymous and have no idea who the other anonymous is. Dem from CT, I do not come to fluwiki for news. Quite the contrary. I get the google BF updates e-mailed to me and have been a member of another excellent AI site for a very long time now which I consider my home base. I come here to view the meeting of the minds and the thinktank discussions concerning breaking news. To see the opinions of those persons I find to be much, much smarter than I; what they think and how they interpret the current threat. I can’t spend hours on the computer to go to each individual diary to see what they are doing and thinking. It just seems like they are all sitting in seperate rooms by themselves just waiting for someone to come by and ask a question. (I am being polite by not saying what I’m thinking they’re doing in those rooms while they wait for the drooling uniformed to come and pay them a visit) Anyway, maybe I just hate change. But I was happy with the main discussion board for the most part, except for the deathly slow pace to navigate thru it, so if you could direct me to the page that would be more of a community discussion on the current threat level or situation that would be greatly appreciated. TIA, naomi

DemFromCTat 11:41

That would be the news section, the most active community thread. Every day, just as here, there is an active discussion of the news and every day, as here, there are separate threads, where some discuss, others read. There is no way to know on this site which threads have 2 comments and which have 200 (when we upgrade it, that will change, and that’s coming soon).

http://www.newfluwiki2.com/tag.do?subjectId=9

It turns out that because you can ‘see’ where the conversation’ is, I can recommend this excellent diary by Northstar for active discussion on whether to get a seasonal flu shot:

http://www.newfluwiki2.com/showDiary.do?diaryId=157

Bird Guano – at 11:28

It isn’t all about stats. I directed that to my anonymous friend, not the rest of you. In the end the site may not suit your needs, (this one may) but that’s not the same as “it will fail because I don’t like it”. OTOH, there are a lot of very pleased users there, as you well know. Active users, apparently.

lohrewok – at 11:43

Think of it as exercise for your brain. It’s good for you to keep the old noggin used to change. When pan-flu hits there will be changes aplenty. Practice now :)

diana – at 12:31

My brain works lightning fast when needed. It is how you are wired. For some its a pleasure, for others more than a chore. It’s not that I won’t exert myself understanding something if need be, its that do I want to exert myself to that degree over something that could be gotten without that amount of effort. Life passes by. Do I want to learn Mandarin and adopt an exotic dog from China? No, I’ll get my standard mutt who understands Sit and Stay. I also wouldn’t go to dog obedience classes, or learn all the internet lingo. I’ll go to Tuscany and take a cooking class before I delve deeper into the internet. Type and run is my speed.Dem is correct, this site will survive, and attract different people ,perhaps those with a deeper understanding of the issues than those like me. Probably younger and already savvy. I am a dinasaur.I can understand craps in all its intracacies and enjoy it. I can understand Bridge but hate it.I guess for me it boils down to not wanting to do it.I just might eat my words. That’s how I feel today. Tommorow is another day.

AnnieBat 12:55

diana and others

When I go to the new site after some time out, I choose the “Diaries” entry in the Menu - top right. This gives a list of everything that is there - the equivalent of the thread headings here.

The Diaries are listed with the latest one created at the top and the rest on down - again like here. There is also the ‘intro’ information showing, which gives you a bit more information about what the Diary is about.

If you want to take a look inside, click the blue “There’s More” at the base of each diary entry. You can get back to the same view by choosing “Diaries” in your menu (top right).

I think you might find that is the same as ‘navigating’ around this site - list of Diary (thread) names, and an ‘easy’ way to get back to the same view each time (equivalent of “return to main forum page).

diana – at 16:53

I am adventurous to a high degree, curious about what interests me, so I will extensively research anything that catches my fancy., and I will waste hours in that search. Yet I have an aversion for wasting energy. Sheer laziness on my part. I am resistent to anything that needn’t be complicated. Perhaps I’m wrong. If I’m ever in the mood for complexity I might check into the newer, better forum. I’m not the only old dog who doesn’t feel like learning new tricks. I’ll stick with old Yeller.Just reading the hints to accessing the newer stuff gives me indigestion.I don’t want to be computer savvy, I just want to get information easily.

On the fence and leaning – at 17:46

OK, I’m trying. I just saw that the rumors page was closed here and moved there so I clicked over. there was a post made on there about 5 minutes ago. Here’s where I get confused. When I check the diaries page there is no mention of a rumor thread. Why doesn’t it show up? I can’t see doing some sort of complex navigation each time just to see if there are any new rumors out there.

DemFromCTat 17:50

diana – at 16:53

that, of course, is your option and your privilege. We support that.

DemFromCTat 17:55

On the fence and leaning –

there will be a new thread opening here. But it it on the main page, in the middle, scroll down. The thread you want is here:

http://www.newfluwiki2.com/showDiary.do?diaryId=268

DemFromCTat 17:58

But in answer to your question, it was created right on the main page (ironically enough, so that everyone could see it!). Because of that, it didn’t appear in the Diaries. We can adjust that easily enough so it won’t happen again.

DemFromCTat 18:04

On the fence and leaning –

my apologies… it’s a learning curve for us, too, and we’ll meet you quarter way!.

Klatu – at 18:13

:-x

On the fence and leaning – at 18:34

Never a need to apologize. It’ll all come together.
