My usual math and logic checker is unavailable and I was wondering if someone here could help? I couldn’t find another thread where this might fit.

Our health monopoly just had a mass vaccination clinic. They have declared — “Mass Dispensing Exercise proves disaster readiness …More than 750 participants walked through the free flu shot clinic October 28, with more than 600 getting the influenza vaccine…. It took participants on average less than 10 minutes to move through the clinic. Up to four lines at a time were set up for people to sign up, get their vaccine, and move through the clinic as quickly as possible. Staffed with nearly 90 volunteers, the clinic staff tested emergency response procedures that might be needed in an actual emergency.”

It seems to me that given: 1) Mass vaccination was scheduled from 10 AM to 6 PM, or 8 hrs.

2) 750 people (presumably not counting volunteers) went through the line

3) 10 minutes per person, average

4) 4 lines

Therefore=

750 people times 10 minutes each equals 7500 minutes

7500 minutes divided by 4 lines equals 1875 minutes

1875 minutes divided by 60 minutes per hour equals 31.25 hrs to have the clinic

31.25 hrs divided by 8 hrs per work day equals not quite 4 days for the one-day event

Alternatively, if 480 minutes available and it takes ten minutes for 4 people to be processed, how many people can be processed?

Their numbers don’t seem right to me (fewer than 6000 people and many out of town at a major convention; maybe 10 other people went through the process during the half or so I was there) but neither does my math.

Many thanks. If help prefers E-mail, mine is ykalaska AT googlemail

Good morning and sorry to bother. Working up the France and French-Switzerland Preppers thread, I have introduced a side-scroll with a link. Would you, please, when you have a little time, correct it? Many thanks.

DemFromCTat 08:36

sure!

DemFromCTat 08:43

cottontop, I sent out 7 emails this am… were anyone of them yours? Not everyone tells me who you are when you email me (and you don’t have to).

crfullmoon – at 08:55

mpb, propaganda doesn’t want you to think “math and logic”.

-hey; we have a “Pandemic Hall of Shame” thread somewhere for “reporting” like that.

I about bit my toungue off yesterday at a clinic, that was full of clueless jumpy volunteers, and had someone hovering I knew would discount me if I tried to slip the volunteers pandemic awareness cards. If supervisor had been out of the room I might have done some good.

Mass Dispensing Exercise Do Not Prove Pandemic Influenza Year Readiness

If a journalist or a few media outlets would take the plunge… (I would be dreaming)

DemFromCT, I thought I turned off blocking pop-ups to the new site, but I still can’t post there, so, I’m still on the “clueless” part of the curve. (Should be getting other things done chez moi, anyway…)

anonymous – at 09:30

mpb:

1) it doesn’t say “10 minutes” it says “less than 10 minutes”. E.g., 10 seconds is less than 10 minutes…

2) your logic is faulty anyway (phew!) Even if their average time inside was 10 minutes, it doesn’t mean that they were “blocking” one of the 4 “lines” for that time. Most of the 10 minutes could have been waiting around, walking between places, etc. The number of lines (4) doesn’t tell you what the maximum number of people in the system at any one time is.

Just as an illustration, imagine a clinic with a 9-minute walk (or wait) between where you sign in and where you get the jab and leave. Suppose it takes 30 seconds to get registered and 30 seconds to actually have the jab. Then both the registering place and the injecting doctor can process 120 people per hour, and the overall throughput of the system (in steady state) is 120 people per hour, but each individual person still takes 10 minutes to be processed, and there’s only one line. The number of people processed per hour is unaffected by the length of the wait between stages, although that’s important for determining how long processing each person takes overall.

The branch of mathematics which deals with this kind of thing is appropriately called queueing theory.

Snowhound1 – at 11:04

Dem..I also sent you an e-mail this AM requesting the new url, but haven’t heard back from you..If you could send it to me at Snowhound1 at aol dot com I would appreciate it. Is there a reason you haven’t publicly posted it here yet?

EnoughAlreadyat 11:17

Bunch of questions… first, I haven’t and can’t be around here regularly lately and for awhile. (hope no English teachers around!) It looks like something is happening… like another forum evolving. There will be some link to it, right?

Thanks for the info on another thread (that I just this morning was able to get back to) concerning the Acetaminophen recall. It doesn’t concern ibuprofen? Because when I google search news for ibuprofen… both acetaminophen and ibuprofen recall come up. I have a whole lot of both. Does anybody know how to contact whoever it is you are suppose contact? Thank you!

EnoughAlreadyat 11:19

The information on the FDA links say to call your doctor if you think you have been affected by the problematic product. There is no contact number for tainted bottles.

gardner – at 11:22

EnoughAlready – at 11:17

The new forum will be open to everyone soon. If you want to see it now, post an email address as Snowhound1 did just above your comment, and Dem can send you the URL.

We’re still testing the new site, figuring out what colors look best, how best to arrange the information, trying to remember our html from years ago, etc.

Come on over, it’s fun!

DemFromCTat 12:29

Pogge SPAM Alert.. Ref Spam..they are making up their own threads too. All have titles that are running the word together.

pogge – at 14:58

Thanks. These attacks that are running across a dozen or more threads at once are always flogging one particular domain. The sooner I can found out the domain and block it, the sooner I can stop them until they pick a different domain. So the messages you folks leave for me are appreciated, though my timing won’t always be right.

I’m looking into anti-bot measures. I doubt I’ll find anything that won’t inconvenience all of us to one degree or another but I may not have a choice. This latest crew is really persistent.

Ho Pogge

These Spambots are having a field day to day …

Happy to keep bumping threads above the ‘nonsense’ if that helps - although I notice that as you delete the spammed threads the rest float to the top anyway ..

Anything I can do to help?

pogge – at 16:55

I’m going to try to remember to change my name when I’m zipping through a bunch of spammy threads. If you see the name “pogge on spam patrol” float to the top, wait a few minutes before you bump. Then the stuff you bump will bypass all the threads I’ve cleaned.

Thanks.

Are you going to be closing active threads on this forum soon? After they reappear on the new forum? (For example, the various recipe threads.)

Is there a date when no new threads will be allowed on this forum?

Nimbus – at 11:15

Hi Mari - here’s the little bit I know. They have already started closing active threads. They are moving them over first and then shutting them down here. A lot of the recipes have been moved already. Irene has created a really nice page on the new site that links to a lot of the various food prep, recipes, cooking info, and food storage.

I’m not sure about when they plan to disallow threads here - I’m sure pogge or Dem will chime in.

DemFromCTat 11:17

active threads should start to be closed this week. There is no date set for no new threads here. We anticipate keeping both places open for months (undetermined).

pogge – at 11:52

Mari:

What Dem said. In fact I’m researching spam control methods so we can operate here without the kinds of problems we’ve seen in the last few days.

DemFromCTat 11:56

new site news:

The network (not our site) is resolving some data storage issues. We are going to be a little slower than normal today.

anon_22 – at 11:58

seems the problem is not us http://www.soapblox.net/blog/showDiary.do?diaryId=701 Hope this fix it soon.

anonymous – at 12:09

Make that a LOT slower.

I haven’t even been able to get the front page for an hour.

Hope they get it fixed so I can continue my forced education on the new forum ;-)

DennisCat 12:14

I like some features of this older forum: Mainly the replies on the new site are indented and after a reply to a reply to a reply are done they are indented to the side and hard to read, also the reponses are in reverse order with some new items on top so you cannot follow the history of a thread. - but that is just me.

DemFromCTat 12:14

Around 25 other sites, too.

Not just us. ;-(

All we can do is wait.

DemFromCTat 12:19

DennisC – at 12:14

You can set your comments to show how you want them. You can go to personal page > profiles > comment pref and set comments to (flat) unthreaded, and you can set the newest comment to show at the top or at the bottom (your choice). Your personal page is available through the Right upper Menu, or click any comment with your name (click on DennisC).

The intended indents allow a conversation, and you can click “parent” wherever it’s squished to read it better. But you can do it your way, and you can change it later.

Sorry about the slowdown, or i’d have you scoot on over and check it out.

cottontop – at 12:20

Dem- is this pretty normal for the other sites too?

DemFromCTat 12:22

cottontop – at 12:20

The slowdown (no), growing pains (yes) or the comment thing (yes)? Many thriving sites use ‘nested’ as a convention.

DennisCat 12:22

DemFromCT – at 12:19

Thanks, I have not spent much time at the new site since it is always so slow.

I’ll try it the next time I can “get in”.

cottontop – at 12:25

I’m just going to use this “down” time to eat some pumpkin pie! Will try later, when all the pie is gone.

DemFromCTat 13:01

DennisCat 13:30

I notice that Melanie is not on the “contacts” on the new forum. Will she be part of the new forum mods? How is she doing? Tell her she is missed.

DemFromCTat 13:38

She’s recovering nicely but slowly and will be added when she is ready to recieve mail. I will pass along your regards and well wishes. Thanks!!

DennisCat 13:41

Thanks, (I did see a post or two from her over at Dr. Bob’s, so I assumed she was getting better). She is a pain sometimes, but she is the reason I cam to the site.

Tell her this turkey says hi.

DemFromCTat 13:54

mj – at 14:28

I just checked in at fluwikie.com and clicked on Discussion Forum and it brought me here. Should it take me to the new forum?

MaMaat 14:50

mj, here’s the link http://www.newfluwiki2.com/frontPage.do

I don’t think the mods are going to change that particular link til this forum is closed and that won’t be for awhile.

pogge – at 15:10

Bear with us on the sidebar. Right now the sidebars on both servers are “in synch”. If I can, I’d like to keep it that way and make changes that make sense here as well as there. And we certainly don’t want “Discussion Forum” on this server going somewhere else.

Karina – at 15:41

Bump -BB – at 23:00
cottontop – at 23:17

Dem- Do you and the others have a general idea of what threads will be here during the next few months?

DemFromCTat 23:20

Well.. there’ll be whichever threads people start, and whichever threads people are currently using from day to day. Much of that will be community dictated. We will remove threads that are both unused and are not on the Forum index.

cottontop – at 23:52

Thanks. Just wondering what this site is going to look like once threads were moved over. The new forum is looking great. Still learning though. But I will get the hang of it. I’m impressed with everyone’s hard work, and dedication. I still think we have the best! (I’m not biased. Just convinced.) You Mods are out of this world, literally. How you’ve managed to take on this huge endeavor, manage your homelife, see the light of day, eat, breath and sleep, is truely beyond me. You’re all inspiring. Anon_22, it’s great to be able to put a real name with your words. I’m with the others, in that, if your PPF is raised, so is mine. I try desperately to stay with you in your posts. I usually get lost, but I also learn something, without fail, from you. Thanks for your dedication.

25 November 2006

DemFromCTat 00:04

What is with all the poll question spam on the new forum ?

You can’t even get to the diary listing of real stuff without 4–5 page scrolls.

Is there some way to put all the poll questions in ONE area so they don’t spam the entire board ?

Some people don’t CARE about 10 poll questions in a row.

A bit excessive, especially when you are trying to learn to navigate the site.

Just another frustration layer.

DemFromCTat 11:12

That’s one of the community members using the site… it’d be as if someone posted 10 threads in a row here. If you consider it rude, tell them. One poll or two polls a day might be more acceptable.

DemFromCTat 19:21

Contact is email. Any questions for the mods you can just post in the community sandbox..

http://www.newfluwiki2.com/showDiary.do?diaryId=285

is there a way for individuals to reverse the order of the Diaries so newest post can be read first?

Not the diaries, where the newest diary IS first. You mean comments? yes!

For flat (unthreaded), you need to go to your personal page. On every page there is a Menu, upper right, and there is a link to Rural Dweller’s Page. On it, to the right is Profile. Click on it. In the middle of the page, it says “comment pref”. Set it to flat unthreaded to get rid of indentations, and the time to either oldest first or newest first. And SAVE THE PAGE before you leave.
