GENEVA, Nov 14 (Reuters) - “Poultry control measures must be tightened in Indonesia where public awareness of bird flu is poor even though it has the highest number of human deaths, the head of the country’s main treatment hospital said on Tuesday.

20 is more close contacts than we usually see tested, and this number includes people at the health clinic and at the hospital, which is unusual.

To the Gang: I have been out of commission for about a week. I am now back on and ready to go and I think you guys have added about 4–6 cases possibly, and more suspicious ones too. When this happened in Tulungagung with Abram who died and Eni his sister who was sent to the hospital in Surabaya, WHO was there. That was in September and 19 nurses and the Doctor at the hospital in Tulungagung were tested. In that case poultry tested positive and the siblings family and HCW’s all tested negative. I think it was 5–6 days before I could find those results although IMO I think someone knew sooner than that. I will just have to keep an eye on this but also IMO whenever HCW’s are being tested it is not a good sign and I wonder what causes enough concern to test the HCW’s, but in this case it may be that local official found no positive chickens and WHO came in but that is my speculation. OTOH, some have insisted that testing should be done on other things than chickens and maybe officials are testing in the wrong places? I think this is probably more than you were wanting to know but thanks for asking. Sorry for going on Anon-YYZ.

I hear you. I am giving a little talk to my immediate neighborhood this afternoon regarding prepping for a potential pandemic. One thing I want to tell them - as they are all “common folk” and will surely ask - is what the odds are that this will go pandemic. They will want to hedge their bets, as they are low income with difficult choices to make. If the odds are high enough, they will set aside the purchase of other things to prepare, but if it’s like a one in ten chance, they’ll probably not do it. I don’t want to lie, even accidentally, and have them spend money they can ill afford to prepare for something that may never happen. But surely it is at least 50/50 by now, isn’t it? I find it odd that no one is willing to say - not the experts, nor anyone on flu wiki - what the growing odds are that this will turn into a pandemic. Given all the different ramifications (ongoing and increasingly serious mutations, lack of transparency in reporting, difficulty in accurate testing of suspect cases, and this latest little glitch - poultry bone meal infected with H5N1 for use as livestock feed?????) - I would really appreciate feedback from flu wiki members on what the probability truly is that this will go pandemic this year.

One slogan for uncertainty is Prep what you eat and eat what you prep. Then it won’t go stale, even if it doesn’t happen this year.

Did anyone see this vidoe on ABC recently? It is a fairly long piece with Dr. Webster, and I found it two days ago from an article on NewsNow from ABC and this link was on that page. I have sent it to several “loved ones” in the last few days..Dr. Webster says he is prepping for three months and people can’t imagine something that could kill 50% of the population. Not, 50% of those infected…I think it is worth seeing and especially good to send out to people who are still “oblivious” to the real dangers of a pandemic stemming from H5N1.

Mary in Hawaii - I really wouldn’t try to give anyone an estimate. I think it has to be a personal decision. I remember when I first started learning about H5N1 in February of this year. I questioned myself. So I decided to back to the very first page at CE, and see what the folks were discussing. Same thing. They felt it was going to arrive any time. Although I do feel the latest developments puts us much closer to a pandemic. I wish you luck with your neighbors. I am a homemaker, with a HS education, so I really can’t give you an educated guess. Just a personal guess, from what I have learned. I feel it may hit this winter season.

The only way I can see a shipment of bone/meat meal having “mad cow” and bird flu is if a very unethical buyer on the global market purchased mad cow contaminated bone meal and also purchased bird flu infected poultry (culls) to make meat meal, then mixed it together to be sold bulk. Much speculation, but that is the only way I can see it happening. Otherwise, someone is making this up for political or financial reasons.

RE: the Webster vidoe-it says it was 8 years since the virus was found in China. I’m assuming that they are referring to the intital outbreak in Hong Kong which puts the video date to 2005.

Apart from the documented cases in Egypt and Indonesia, how may people were buried or cremated before lung tissue samples were taken? Nobody knows. How far are we into the pandemic? Nobody knows.

We prep what we eat and eat what we prep also. Another thing we do is donate part of our preps to the local food banks as we rotate, we feel that the food banks can always use some help. Whenever we do discuss prepping among co-workers or friends and neighbors we always mention to them that the food banks can always use what the prepper doesn’t use. Since we started prepping we have always said that if we are prepped and this pandemic does not happen we will not have to buy groceries at the higher prices for awhile and the food banks will get another donation. IMO get prepared, go live your life and do all the things you enjoy while you can.

Thanks everyone for your advice. My neighbors are largely poor and uneducated (I live in rural Hawaii.) In case I can’t convince them to buy their own supplies, I have decided to stock excess rice (fairly cheap here) and give it out to them if the need arises. It’s not much, but would keep them alive. Can’t see letting little kids starve just because their parents weren’t able or willing to prepare. I have read so many articles out of Indo that tell of the villagers flooding into the clinics to get the Tamiflu that is being passed out to them. There is something incongruous here---when alot of us have traipsed into our family doctors and asked to get conditional Rx’s, only to be rebuffed. I daresay that the Indos, at this point in time, have more access to protective Tamiflu than the lot of us here in this country. We are told that we can’t have it as then there would not be enough for the rest of the world/country when the PanFlu comes and it is really needed. He/she had done some work that suggested that 155 cases in a region over twenty days would be an important occurance — that posting came with lots of caveats — (viruses do not read math books), but I can see merit in the thinking even if I don’t see or understand the math that comes up with the numbers — we keep seeing a case here, two cases there — the most being 81 during the month of August. If we suddenly had 155 cases in the first half of December, that would be quite a different month.

So, I am telling my neighbors that I’m keeping an eye on the postings — they should prep for earthquakes and floods anyway (we’re in the Pacific Northwest) — but it could be really, really bad when it comes (am sorry that Katrina happened, but am grateful for all the news reporting — many now do realize that the troops don’t come racing in to help)

Better sanitation, and keeping animals separated, (and keeping pet cats indoors, and keeping dogs on leash and supervised to prevent cross-species contact, ect; people say it is too hard… well, so is having an out-of-control possibly-fatal disease situation…)

I have posted it on new forum as well - I am looking for the number of cases and number of deaths in Indo since 2006 ONLY which gives us the (?)76% CFR there - I see all the numbers, but it doesnt look like we break that out? or am I missing it?? math not my strong suit!!! :-))
