Forum: Closing for Renovations Tuesday Evening

27 November 2006

pogge – at 17:12

The spammers have been kinda quiet today but I think they’re just trying to lull me into a false sense of security.

Tomorrow (Tuesday) evening around 9 pm I’m going to make this place read-only for a while, put a dummy “home page” in place and then upgrade PmWiki and the scripts that make this forum work. There’s a new feature I want and I have to upgrade everything to get it. All things being equal it shouldn’t take more than an hour.

I’ll bump this thread periodically so people will see it. When the work’s done I’ll post here to hit the high points on the upgrade. There are one or two other features you might find useful besides the spam control feature (which you won’t like but it’s only a minor inconvenience).

Quite a “coincidence” Mr. Pogge. First the big move to the “new fluwiki”, then the news out of Korea of fresh outbreaks. That leaves me to wonder exactly what your agenda is, Mr. Pogge.

(just kidding, I’ve been watching to much 24)

mj- quilter1 – at 20:49

I’m so glad he’s doing it now, before more stuff hits the fan. Only an hour. (ok maybe it’ll be a bit more or less, but then it’s done.) I like having this comfort zone, and without spam it will be even better.

DemFromCTat 20:57

How it will look.

mj- quilter1 – at 21:40

That looks simple enough even I can do it. Good idea.

cottontop – at 21:58

Oh great, something else to learn. ;-) kidding.

Think I can handle that.

cottontop – at 21:59

Oh, and really like the look. Nice.

Texas Rose – at 23:21

Crisp and clean. Nice.

pogge – at 23:49

That 3 digit code shouldn’t prevent any human from posting. But most of the spam we’re getting comes from automated scripts (that’s why we keep referring to ‘bots) and this should stop them. The code is random — it changes every time the page is refreshed.

Texas Rose – at 23:55

The code entering process is similar to some sites’ posting verification process, except it’s easier to read than letters and numbers that look like they were drawn by someone under the influence.<G>

DemFromCTat 23:57

Texas Rose – at 23:55

You bet. I hate those weird bent letters on a day-glo background.

Texas Rose – at 23:59

Well, I was going to make a reference to listening to Iron Butterfly while drawing but thought that would truly date me.<G>

DemFromCTat 00:13

I deliberately avoided the term paisley.

Texas Rose – at 00:16

This is totally OT but I babysat for a couple who had a round fur waterbed decked out in satin sheets and the room was light with a black light, perfectly suited to enhance the psychedelic day-glo posters on the wall. It was a hippie love nest and just about the funniest thing I had ever seen.

Texas Rose – at 00:18

The first “light”=“lit”

(Which described the homeowners some of the time as well.)

The story goes that the song “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida”, was intended to be called “In the Garden of Eden”, but the band member was so stoned that when asked what to call it, could only say, “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida”.

This is the funniest thread I’ve read in awhile! :-)

ohmylord are we dating ourselves!

You know, I’m posting over at the new site, but honestly I still feel like I am throwing a glass message bottle out into the ocean because I can’t ‘SEE’ things like I could here….I don’t mean the color background — you’ve brought that up to speed, I just mean there is not as clean & understandable at a glance as this is. I know I’ll adjust eventually, but I feel like I’m slowly losing an old friend. And you KNOW I nursed my oldest cat along to 22 years, I intend to nurse this site on too, if I can. I was searching for an answer containing ‘butane’ on the new site & only found about 6 references to it & none of them were in the copied over threads from here I don’t believe. So I came over here to search & found this thread….thanks for the heads up on the temp work…….gotta go search for ‘butane’ here now….later!

I’m-workin’-on-it – at 11:40

And I found exactly what I was lookin’ for in one quick search-less than 10 seconfs. I love this ole place.

pogge – at 13:06

Bumping to catch the afternoon shift.

chicksandheifers – at 13:58

If anyone is interested, we were thinking of having a chat tonight while the wiki is down.

Bumping for the late afternoon shift. Aren’t you glad this doesn’t happen very often?

DemFromCTat 16:25

chicksandheifers – at 13:58

good idea, and do mention the other one will be up. At least, that’s the plan. ;-)

crfullmoon – at 16:32

Now I’ve got “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida” auditory neuron guitar loop; don’t do that!

I’m-workin’-on-it, I only got my cat to age 16.

Thanks for chasing the spam away, pogge. (Are you looking for Mr.GoodSite?)

Snowhound1 – at 16:55

bumping for Pogge

pogge – at 18:09

Now I’ve got “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida” auditory neuron guitar loop…

Cool! I always thought they were just called earworms but I’m much happier to have a nice, geeky term for them.

chicksandheifers – at 18:12

LOL Dem! How could I forget? I’ve been plugging both fluwiki forums all over the place lately, and I manage to forget to mention the new one here! Come visit sometime and I’ll show you where I’ve been dropping links. :-)

Texas Rose – at 18:13

There was an episode of “The Simpsons” where Bart set up the church to sing “In the Garden of Eden”. The organist, an elderly lady type, almost blew a gasket trying to play the piece. It was hysterical.

Texas Rose – at 18:17

Geez. I forgot to ask: When you say 9pm, which time zone are you using?

DemFromCTat 18:21

Wiki time = eastern time, I think.

pogge – at 18:24

Yes, EST.

April – at 18:27

Jack Bauer – at 20:31

You can NEVER watch too much 24.

Texas Rose – at 18:29

Okay, thanks.

DennisCat 18:40

Wiki time = EST + 7 minutes

DemFromCTat 18:48

yeah, i don’t understand the 7 min bug.

crfullmoon – at 16:32 16 is a ripe old age for kitties — you did well for him/her!

And I want to know why Jack Bauer hasn’t solved this bird flu issue yet? Is it because he can’t shoot it or blow it up???? Surely the answer is somewhere on his cellphone!!

pogge – at 21:08

I’m starting in a couple of minutes.

pogge28 November 2006, 21:26

Test.

pogge28 November 2006, 21:35

So I lied. It only took about half an hour. There are a few cosmetic glitches but as long we’re fully functional I’ll come back to those.

Among the new things you’ll notice:

  1. There’s a new gizmo under the search bar that allows you to change the font sizes across the entire site. If your browser accepts cookies that setting should stick, i.e. you won’t have to reset it every time you return.
  2. The main forum page where the topics are listed now includes the number of posts in each thread.
  3. The author names in a thread are now hooked into the Profiles. That’s why my author name on this comment is a link. If you don’t have a profile, you’ll likely see a question mark after your name.
  4. The date is now shown in the header for each comment.
  5. If you try to post while leaving the author field blank, you’ll get an error.
  6. Immediately under the author name is a random three digit code in red. You have to enter that code in the field next to it before you post. If you leave that field empty you’ll get an error message. If you enter the wrong code you’ll lose your post. Sorry ‘bout that but that’s the way it came.
  7. When a comment is posted, the script automatically adds “Comment added” to the change summary so those of you who like to use the Last 50 Changes will be able to tell whether us mods were posting or fooling around.

Commence posting. I guess.

chicksandheifers28 November 2006, 21:35

Can we be here now?

pogge28 November 2006, 21:36

Yes.

chicksandheifers28 November 2006, 21:38

This isn’t much different at all. Plus, less spam - right?

pogge28 November 2006, 21:39

Hopefully. Time will tell.

pogge28 November 2006, 21:46

Testing in Internet Exploder.

pogge28 November 2006, 21:48

Testing in Opera.

DemFromCT28 November 2006, 21:51

testing in Firefox 2.0 for Macs

DemFromCT28 November 2006, 21:52

Well, that was painless, pogge.

28 November 2006, 21:55

You guys are whiz kids. That was fast. And this is easy. No more spam. Yea!

cactus28 November 2006, 21:56
 Cool.

I like ! Print is larger( at least on my puter ) Much easier on these old eyes.

Jane?28 November 2006, 21:59

You did it-looks great!

DennisC28 November 2006, 21:59

Boy that was quick. Using Internet Explorer 7

pogge28 November 2006, 22:08

cactus:

Please don’t put spaces at the beginning of your lines. That’s why your print is a bit smaller. If your sentences are long enough it will cause sidescroll. I had that fixed on the old version but the markup has changed and I haven’t found the fix for it yet.

cactus28 November 2006, 22:37

K, pogge. Sorry, making indents for paragraphs is a habit. Even when posting a 1 line sentence.
