Wow, Dem! Nice Map!!!
Kind of says endemic doesn’t it.
Would Karo be in the vicinity. It would be really nice to have Karo shown both as a comparison but also from the point of view of connectedness between clusters.

Karo in Northern Sumatra and is just south of Medan and a little west of Simalungen Kabupaten (second red dot down on the left portion of the map).
Many Cats – at 01:20
I get it sent from Okieman, i just post it.

Well, That map is one heck of a nice summary! Thanks Okieman!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Okieman. Thanks. They must have been looking at your picture when they said…a picture is worth a thousand words.
The position of Karo is not conclusive but I’ll bet you that these two clusters were tied together somehow. It makes me think there is a ‘furry critter’ spreading things around a bit.
An updated file entitled ¡°Bird Flu Indonesia upload 9¨C09.xls¡± has been provided. When it is uploaded, you can access it at this link (username is ¡°wikimember¡±, password is ¡°wiki123¡å): ftp://www.singtomeohmuse.com/ Below is a brief Summary of the changes since the last file.
As usual, if you see information which needs to be changed or added, please discuss it on the latest Indonesia Outbreak thread. Okieman will develop a map with this information to be posted on the Summary Thread. Thanks again to all the news searchers!

Updated map matching Michelle’s spreadsheet has been emailed to DemFromCT a couple of hours ago. I reckon they will be posted sometime tomorrow.

Can I ask all those kind folks who put these together to give us a numeric total every few days, ie no of suspected, no of confirmed etc.
I know its all on the map. But when the map changes, we lose track of whether it is increasing or decreasing.
Just a total, suspected, confirmed, dead, positive, negative.
Thanks!!

Michelle and I have been talking. Later this evening she is going to post a summary of the data you mention, here on this thread. She will also send Dude an updated spreadsheet. In this way a running tally of what is occuring can be seen every few days and the detailed data available to those that wish to view it.
I am going to prepare another map this evening. The difference in the map is that it is going to be with a beginning date of Sept. 1 thru Sept 12 (today). One of the problems with the map has been cumulative numbers for an ever increasing number of locations. The map is getting more and more cluttered. This is in part due to us adding additional info retrospectively as more data became available. (The government and the media in Indonesia is releasing some data a month or two after the fact.) The last map was an attempt to capture that additional data. But, more data also made it more confusing, especially concerning recent developments.
A Compromise
Michelle’s spreadsheet will continue to contain all the data the news gatherers can capture. The running tally on this thread you are reading now will show cumulative numbers per each date it is posted. In this way a personn can compare changes with previous days summaries. The map will geographically display the locations and numbers of cases per a particular period of time, adding or dropping cases as time progresses. This way a person can very quickly see what has happened in say the past two weeks or so. I can still develop a cumulative map, say once a month or however often the fluwiki community desires. I would recommend that both the cumulative map and the short term map be posted. Most fluwikians just want to know if something bad is developing, but the cumulative map may be useful for convincing the unconvinced.
Okieman, thanks. No, do not develop a cumulative map. That’s WAY too much work for you guys. I was thinking just a post if you got some totals.
I am ever grateful for your work. Please take care of yourself and do not get over-stressed because of this. :-)
Another approach is a 10 day map posted every ten days, leave the old one(s).
DemFromCT – at 19:47
Since the last map went up to Sept 9, I will make another map on Sept 19 which will include additional cases that will have occured during that 10 day time frame. I think Michelle will likely make a post with the totals anon_22 asked for sometime in the next hour or so.
Sorry, I should have said the Sept 19 map will include only additional cases since Sept 9.

Thanks again to the news gatherers. As usual, if you see information which needs to be changed, please discuss it on the most recent Indonesian Outbreak thread.
One added comment: The month is intended to reflect when the patient became ill, based on the best information available. If additional information surfaces in September regarding a person who became ill in July, it is the July data which will change on the next summary.

SINCEREST THANKS, Michelle in OK for all your hard work on our behalf! I almost hate looking at the numbers, though, for I feel somewhat inhuman looking out for my own safety by counting the bodies of others who are unable to defend themselves against this disease.
Many Cats… I understand your feeling. Behind each number is a precious face who was given the gift of life. The process of tracking this disease has certainly made me more aware of peoples’ suffering in various parts of the world. When my own 8 year old developed a 102 degree fever Friday night, I couldn’t help but think of possible consequences in a different land or time. I pray our efforts will not only help ourselves, but also allow warning time to help others.

Looking carefully through your spreadsheets, I noticed that for July the “symptoms test pending” number never changed. Apparently the 2 suspect never were deemed positive or negative. Then those same numbers for August fluctuated up and down slightly, but overall only two cases were moved out of the tests pending category, although somehow 4 were added to the test negative category. So there’s apparently something in these counts that I don’t get) But what is important is that means 46 cases of suspected bird flu which were supposed to be tested and confirmed in August were not. And for September, although there was more changes in these numbers - there hasn’t been a change since 10/07, leaving another 38 cases of suspect bird flu in September still undetermined. This is disturbing on a couple of fronts. First, if these actually were positive for H5N1, it means two things…one, the virus is spreading alot faster among humans, and two, it’s not as lethal as it appeared to be. The question is, how does one ever track down those tests to see what became of them?

You put your finger on one of the things which has frustrated the Indonesian news tracking team here on the fluwiki. Reports of suspect cases surface, sometimes test results are reported, but many times we never hear another word. Michelle can better respond to your comment than I, but please realize the imperfection of machine translations and follow-up information, something we have all had to accept while trying to gather news from Indonesia. It is a window into what is occuring, but a window tinted darkly.

Thanks for trying to follow the data. Please keep in mind that the numbers are the best estimates we can glean from translated Indonesian news articles. And yes, the lack of follow up communication often leaves many in the Tests Pending category. I would not assume these cases were positive, as I think the known positive’s are communicated. I also believe the authorities know the tests results in most cases, but for whatever reason, the information didn’t make it through the media channels.
The #s by month are somewhat moving targets. If we identify cases as duplicated, an entry may be deleted, or if the date symptoms developed becomes known, a case may move from one month to another after the fact. We try to maintain as much integrity as possible by posting the entire spreadsheet at the site Okieman referenced so that all may review and comment in the discussion thread as needed.
I hope this was helpful to you. The news searchers can likely shed more light on the frustrating aspects of media silence if you’d like to ask further questions in the latest Indonesia Outbreak thread.
Mary in Hawaii - I’m really not trying to make this confusing. But the numbers from August are going to change in this next post. Because you asked a question, I reviewed my formulas to make sure nothing was out of whack (technical term). I had one patient listed as August which should have been September, so the next table is corrected. Thanks for asking :)
